The knowledge production modes in practice based design research KEYWORDS : Practice based design research(PBDR), Knowledge production, Knowledge integration map In the broader context of design change in macro, meso and micro level, the design landscape has become broader and the value of design has become more plentiful (Westcott et al., 2013), and design issues have
become more dynamic and complex (Dorst, 2015). This circumstance is requesting that the emergence of new design knowledge. Design research is the process of producing design knowledge, which is the process of
generating explicit, discussable, transferable and accumulable knowledge(Manzini, 2009). In the design prac-
tice, design knowledge is generated in the process of the design research through action. We named this type of research as practice based design research (PBDR). Knowledge production MODE2(Gibbons et al., 1994)

provides an insight into the design research from the perspective of knowledge production and PBDR is
moving towards a knowledge based integration model. The purpose of this study is to defined PBDR models

from knowledge production perspective and analyzed the knowledge production journeys in different models. Therefore, some knowledge production based design strategies could be developed to respond to the new

design circumstance. There are three main questions to the research:
Knowledge production in design
1、How could the designers define the models of practice based design research from the perspective
of knowledge production?
research and practice
2、What are the knowledge production journeys in the different PBDR models? Is there any necessity and possibility to improvement them?
3、How could the designers develop the knowledge production based design strategy for different

design situations?
