This front page feature of the March 24, 2000 issue of The Big Timber Pioneer took a look at the bison ranch operation, and the practice of bison ranching in general, at Tom and Meredith Brokaw’s expansive 12 Springs Ranch. The Brokaw’s ranch is nestled north of south central Montana’s Absaroka Wilderness area in the tall, rolling hills and gullies carved out by the west fork of the Boulder River. — “If a bison can put its nose over a fence, chances are it will try to push through or jump over the barrier. It’s common for a full grown bull bison to weigh one ton or more. Despite their size, they are able to make a standing six foot jump.” —
