Area Trails

Middleton’s award-winning trail system encompasses 15 miles of pathways, including a five-mile continuous trail connecting the far northeast side of Middleton with the far northwest side. The trails wind through Middleton, linking neighborhoods, parks and nature areas. You can walk or bike your way from the bright and bustling Greenway Station to charming downtown Middleton and then to a quiet forest glade. The Pheasant Branch Conservancy is one of the highlights of the trail system. The conservancy’s nature trails form a loop through the forests, fields and wetlands. Common wildlife sightings include great blue herons, a variety of frog species, white-tailed deer, sandhill cranes, several species of duck, Canada geese, hawks, owls and dozens of different species of songbirds. Wildlife observation areas can be found along the conservancy’s trails. Middleton is an ideal destination for road bicyclists seeking to explore the world-renowned country roads of western Dane County and south-central Wisconsin.

The roads that run north and west from Middleton lead to some of the most popular bicycling routes in the Midwest. Pheasant Branch Road, Airport Road and the paved trail along Highway 12 are the most popular bicycle “escape routes.” After the snow arrives, trails throughout Middleton are professionally groomed for joggers, walkers, crosscountry skiers and snowshoers. During the winter, the Pleasant View Golf Course offers cross-country ski trail loops ranging from 0.5 to 2.3 miles. It is one of the area’s most popular cross-country skiing spots and is noted for its outstanding grooming. You’ll find a number of other trail opportunities within a short drive of Middleton. Governor Nelson State Park is located just minutes from downtown Middleton on the shores of Lake Mendota. The park offers 8 miles of hiking trails through oak forests and restored prairies, and cross-country skiing is available in the winter.
