SPORTS AND RECREATION Paddle, pedal, fish, bike, hike and ski your way through the Stevens Point area. Which adventure will you choose?

For fun and adventure in the outdoors, you can’t beat the Stevens Point area. Here are a few of the exciting outdoor activities the area offers. For a complete list of outdoor activities and detailed maps, please contact the Visitor Center at 715-344-2556.

FUN ON THE RIVERS & LAKES Canoeing and Kayaking Below are some of the Stevens Point area’s best paddling trips. Local outfitters can provide transportation for trips using rented equipment. (See Outdoor Rentals on page 19).

Tomorrow River – Nelsonville to Highway DD Begin your paddling adventure in Nelsonville. Stop to view the historic Rising Star Mill, one of four museums maintained by the Portage County Historical Society. The mill is open for special events throughout the year. This river segment cuts a winding path through woods and fields. Four miles downstream in the Village of Amherst, be sure to follow portage signs to avoid the dam. Once you reach Amherst, stop for a stroll and lunch in the downtown district, complete with shops, restaurants and an art gallery. Continue downstream. Suggested take-outs are Highway T or Highway DD. Please note: during high water, submerged logs and swirling water can cause problems. During low water, rocks and shallows will be present.

16

Plover River – Jordan Park to Iverson Park Park your car in Iverson Park off Highway 66 in Stevens Point, then travel Highway 66 east to Jordan Park. Jordan Park offers camping as well as picnicking and swimming areas. The paddling trip begins at the canoe ramp on the south side of Highway 66 in Jordan Park. The route will meander through generally flat water. In June and July, it’s an excellent trip for birdwatchers. Because of the wooded landscape on both sides of the river, a paddle along this stretch is an excellent way to view fall colors. Once you reach Iverson Park, enjoy a dip at the swimming beach, or walk on a short segment on the Green Circle Trail, which makes its way through the park. If you are hungry, try a local favorite, the Hilltop Pub & Grill, just east of Iverson Park.

Wisconsin River North Take Highway HH West out of Stevens Point (approximately 4 miles) and you will find a boat landing on the right side of the road. Put in here and paddle downstream, back toward Stevens Point. As you proceed downstream, the islands to your left are surrounded by channels. The adventurous paddler may wish to poke around the islands or spend some time fishing, birdwatching or animal viewing. All channels heading south open into the Stevens Point Flowage and back to the main channel. As you paddle through the flowage, go under the power lines and take out at the boat landing near the swimming beach in Bukolt Park on the left.

StevensPointArea.com

Once ashore, walk the Green Circle Trail segment to Pfiffner Pioneer Park along the riverfront. Across the river, you will see K.A.S.H. Playground at Mead Park. At the southernmost tip of Pfiffner Park, you will encounter the Riverfront Arts Center. Downtown Stevens Point, just one block east, offers a variety of specialty shops, dining, historical murals and other attractions. Many other Stevens Point area waterways offer recreational opportunities, including Lake DuBay, McDill Pond, Mill Creek, Adams Lake, Collins Lake, Lake Emily, Jordan Pond, Sunset Lake, Lake Thomas, Wisconsin River flowages, the Little Wolf River and Spring Creek.

Water levels vary. Shoreline fishing from public land only.

More than 80 percent of the Green Circle winds through secluded natural areas. Visit the newest section of the trail, just to the northeast of the Schmeeckle Reserve, where a half-mile section of boardwalk was recently installed. Or, try heading west from the Schmeeckle Reserve and walk through the Stevens Point Sculpture Park, the newest city park, with trails connecting to the Green Circle Trail.

Hiking is also available at the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area, Ice Age Trail, Hartman Creek State Park, Jordan Park, Lake Emily Park and Standing Rocks Park.

For a more rural view, try the Tomorrow River State Trail. The 18-mile trail, developed on an abandoned railroad grade, connects the villages of Plover and Amherst Junction and consists of crushed limestone packed to a smooth surface.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

Boating The Wisconsin River, Lake DuBay and several small lakes offer miles of water for waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, jet skiing, sailboating, fishing, pontooning and canoeing. For access to the Stevens Point Flowage of the Wisconsin River, boat landings are available at Pfiffner Pioneer Park, Bukolt Park and Highway 10 West. For access to the Biron Flowage of the Wisconsin River, boat landings are available at Galecke Park and Blue Heron Lane. SPORTS AND RECREATION

Biking Enjoy the scenic rural landscape surrounding Sunset Lake in the northeastern corner of Portage County. Begin your trip in Sunset Lake County Park, near the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station. The country roads surrounding Sunset Lake are lightly traveled and offer a wide variety of terrain. Circle back to your starting point and take a dip in Sunset Lake on the beautiful sandy beach. The crystal-clear waters of this glacial lake offer a perfect spot for a picnic after your ride. Standing Rocks County Park offers an assortment of mountain bike trails at various skill levels. The trails wind through the wooded park and are open daily from May 1-November 16. There are plenty of climbs, roots and rocks to navigate. Mountain bikes must stay on designated trails at all times. All single track is signed and one-way only (trail fee required). Biking is also available on rural routes throughout the Stevens Point area as well as the Ice Age Bicycle Trail, Tomorrow River State Trail, Green Circle Trail, Schmeeckle Reserve and the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area. For a detailed Stevens Point area trail guide, call 715-344-2556 or visit StevensPointArea.com.
