The City of Wisconsin Rapids extends a warm welcome to our charming City and beautiful southern Wood County. We are a charming place where you’ll encounter an array of diverse industry, beautiful scenery and one of a kind experiences any time of the year. Coated paper was invented right here in Wisconsin Rapids. The magazines, annual reports and catalogues that are a part of our everyday life are probably printed on paper made by NewPage right here in ‘Rapids’. Wisconsin Rapids is also home to Renaissance Learning, a company that creates educational software and hardware used in 57 countries worldwide. We are pleased to have Ocean Spray as a part of our community, producing “Craisins” in our Westside Industrial Park. We also have Mariani, a family run specialty cranberry products company. With companies specializing cranberries, paper and education, our region offers a wide variety of business and industry and embraces all types of business endeavors. Our community offers recreational outdoor activities all year long. Wisconsin Rapids has over 25 miles of trails, and whether you prefer to run, bike or just take your time and enjoy the scenery, there is sure to be a perfect path for you! Baseball fans can spend an enjoyable evening with family and friends at Witter Field watching the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, our very own Northwood’s League team. For recreational golfers and enthusiasts alike, Wisconsin Rapids is home to several beautiful golf courses that will allow participants to take in the various landscapes and beautiful scenery. Each season brings additional activities to take part in such as the Cranberry Blossom Fest held in late June. The Fourth of July in Wisconsin Rapids is always a widely attended celebration of patriotism, family and tradition; and late July brings the ever popular annual Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Tournament held at Lake Wazeecha. While in September, the annual “Grand Affair” showcases our vibrant downtown. Regardless of how you choose to experience it, our area will provide you with an abundance of opportunities to live, work and play. It is a pleasure to welcome you to Wisconsin Rapids! of outdoor activities to enjoy all season long. If one was traveling from the southern half of the state, we’re half the distance to “Up North” communities such as Minocqua. The Arts is another draw to Wisconsin Rapids. We have very talented artists who are from WR and reside here, too. You can find their works in a variety of studios & boutiques. The cost of living is affordable for residents and visitors, too! Golf! WR has lots and lots of wonderful courses in a small radius. The Wisconsin Rapids Area is home to beautiful settings and friendly communities. Experience a variety of local colors and flavors by getting out and exploring the area’s parks, town squares, and welcoming atmospheres. BABCOCK Babcock, in the southwestern corner of Wood County, is a small residential community with rural aspects. Home to Sandhill Wildlife Area and Ocean Spray’s cranberry receiving station, Babcock truly has nature’s best: birds and berries. BIRON Located in southeastern Wood County along the banks of the Wisconsin River, Biron offers a blend of natural beauty, quiet residential neighborhoods, and abundant wildlife and recreation. Home to one of North America’s finest coated paper manufacturing facilities, as well as hundreds of acres of thriving cranberry marshes, Biron’s diverse landscape provides the perfect place to live, work, and play in the Heart of Wisconsin area. CRANMOOR The Cranmoor area is home to Wisconsin’s cranberry production and the world’s largest inland marsh. The town boasts acres upon acres of cranberry beds which are a beautiful sight to behold while driving the world famous Cranberry Highway® during the fall harvest and spring blossom time. GRAND RAPIDS The town of Grand Rapids, the third largest community in Wood County, is known for its central location, wooded residential areas, and access to a variety of recreational activities. The community is also home to Lake Wazeecha and South Wood County Park, a favorite spot for recreational walks, camping, biking, boating and fishing. KELLNER A rural community located on the Portage County border, Kellner has retained its midwestern charm and is the perfect setting for a Sunday drive. The town boasts country cooking cafés and charming shops throughout. NEKOOSA The City of Nekoosa is a small residential community with a strong sense of place. What began as a fur trapping and trading community, the community’s prime location on the Wisconsin River soon led to other industries. By the 19th century, Nekoosa had established itself as home of “Peter Papermaker,” a symbol of papermaking ingenuity and manufacturing. Riverside Park, a striking spacious site near Nekoosa’s business quarter, is home to several large events including Walleye Days in the spring. Be sure to mark your calendars and come enjoy the famous Giant Pumpkin Festival in the fall in the Nekoosa Business Park. PITTSVILLE Located at the geographical center of Wisconsin, Pittsville offers peaceful residential living midway between Wood County’s two largest cities: Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids. Majestic antique homesteads, faded red barns, acres of cranberry beds, and family farms all contribute to Pittsville’s charms.

Port Edwards Originally titled “French Town,” the pioneers of Port Edwards, including its founder, John Edwards, dammed the Wisconsin River in 1840 to provide water power for a sawmill. Today, Port Edwards thrives on the preservation of the area’s history, its beauty, and an abundance of recreational opportunities. Port Edwards is the perfect place to stop for a picnic or snack while biking between Wisconsin Rapids and Nekoosa along the Wisconsin River. ROME An area rich in recreational opportunities and natural beauty, Rome is home to “The Lakes”: Arrowhead, Camelot, Petenwell, and Sherwood. The community prides itself on the numerous acres within the town available for recreational opportunities including boating, fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing and ATVing. Rome is also home to several annual events including Snoblast at Lake Arrowhead and the Taste of Rome. RUDOLPH Rudolph is a charming community located approximately 7 miles north of Wisconsin Rapids. An agricultural area once populated by sawmill and stave mill workers, Rudolph is now home to a thriving cheese factory, Wisconsin’s largest grotto, and several quaint country stores. Rudolph’s Country Christmas, which includes a one-day special cancellation from the postal service for letters to friends and family, is celebrated every December. VESPER Thriving on its rural charm, Vesper offers much of what we prize about our nation’s agricultural areas. Sample ripe, delicious fruits and vegetables by picking or purchasing at the community’s weekly farmer’s market, one of its apple orchards, or a local pumpkin farm. Vesper is the quintessential example of a perfect rural respite. WISCONSIN RAPIDS Wisconsin Rapids, the county seat of Wood County, is a consolidation of the two early towns of Grand Rapids and Centralia; the former lying on the east side of the Wisconsin River, the latter on the west. The Indians gave to this place along the river the name of “Addah- wah-gam,” meaning the “two-sided rapids,” as the rapids here were divided in two by a great boulder. Wisconsin Rapids today offers Midwestern charm and atmosphere while providing access to modern infrastructure and technology, abundant educational and cultural opportunities, a mix of retail establishments and restaurants, and a stable business environment.

Located at the south end of the extensive rapids of the Wisconsin River in what are now Portage and Wood Counties, Robert Wakely’s settlement at Point Basse was the head of the navigable Wisconsin River. See the restored Wakely house, trading post, blacksmith shop, and 1900s schoolhouse. Call for tours. Rapids Municipal Zoo 1911 Gaynor Ave., Wisconsin Rapids 715-421-8240 A small zoo with an interactive petting area, beautiful gardens, an enclosed reservable shelter, picnic area and a playground for children of all ages is featured at this fun-filled family attraction. The owners of Glacial Lake Cranberries offer one-of-a-kind cranberry tours by reservation only during the third week of September through the third week of October. Experience the cranberry harvest, listen to the song of the sandhill crane, and view the vibrant fall colors over a bright sea of red. Learn history and fun facts, view videos, and shop for cranberry-themed gifts at the Glacial Lake Cranberries Visitor Center. Rudolph Grotto 6957 Grotto Ave., Rudolph 715-435-3120 On top of a low hill, behind St. Philips Church, are the sprawling grounds of the Grotto Gardens and Wonder Cave. The Rudolph Grotto, started in 1920, was a fulfillment of a promise that Father Philip Wagner made to the Virgin Mary in thanks for healing from a lingering illness while studying for the priesthood. The Grotto consists of five plus acres and lush flower beds, numerous shrines, museum, and gift shop. The Grotto is set among meandering paths and crooked bridges, with shady, intimate areas for meditation as well as more formal memorials and open picnic grounds. Mead Rapids View Park Dedicated to the earliest settlers for their great efforts and progress they and those who followed brought to this area and to the Mead families for their continuous commitment to the beautification of our river banks and parks, this clock towerstands along the riverfront in downtown Wisconsin Rapids.

Witter and his wife Charlotte built their beautiful home on “Quality Row” in 1907, and we at the South Wood County Historical Museum would like to share it with you. Our display of Disney animator Grim Natwick’s work includes Betty Boop, Mr. Magoo, Snow White and others. The Krohn photographs from the 1950s are still on view. We invite you to walk through a history of cranberry growing, business districts and lumbering in our area. We also feature a country kitchen, school room and a train depot. Our changing exhibit for 2013 illustrates area involvement in the Civil War battle of Gettysburg. The Wisconsin River Papermaking Museum focuses on papermaking history in the Wisconsin River valley and particularly history of the Consolidated Water Power & Paper Company which was headquartered in Wisconsin Rapids for over 100 years. The Museum features two local history exhibits. The first is a pictorial history of the 100-year-old mansion that houses the museum. The second tells the story of the development of the dam on the Wisconsin River at Grand Rapids/Centralia. Totaling more than 1,200 acres, the park offers 95 campsites, 77 of which are electrical. Campground facilities include showers, picnic areas, boat launch, beach area and an enclosed shelter. The park provides a scenic, undeveloped, wooded area for users. The Wood County Park & Forestry Department takes campsite reservation up to 11 months in advance. On-site registration for non-reserved sites begins May 1 at the campground, through the park closing date, Oct. 31.

North Wood County Park 7500 Park Lane, Arpin 715-421-8422 Located 5 miles north of Hwy. 13 and 80 on County Road A. The 172-acre park is located on the banks of the Yellow River. Two small artificial lakes created by dams on the river and a small pine-wooded island provide scenic beauty for the entire area. One of the main attractions of the park is the 225-foot suspension bridge over the river. Other attractions include a frisbee golf course, stone shelter for rent and beach area. There are 99 campsites located at North Park, 78 of these are electrical. Shower facilities are available. The Wood County Park & Forestry Department takes campsite reservations up to 11 months in advance. On-site registration for non-reserved sites begins May 1 at the campground, through the park closing date, Oct. 31. South Wood County Park 64th St. South, Kellner 715-421-8422 Located 5.5 miles east of Wisconsin Rapids, the park surrounds the 148-acre Lake Wazeecha, which is the Indian term for “lake of the land of the pines.” Totaling more than 325 acres, the park offers 73 campsites, 54 of which are electrical. Campground facilities include a concession stand with ice and wood, showers, picnic areas, playground, beach area and boat launch. The Wood County Park & Forestry Department takes campsite reservations up to 11 months in advance. On-site registration for non-reserved sites begins May 1 at the campground, through the park closing date, Oct. 31.

Purple Trail This widely paved trail starts where Hwy. 54 and County Hwy. W meet. Proceed north on 54, crossing Washington Street. Two blocks north of Washington Street, the trail goes through a pedestrian underpass emerging at Robinson Park. If you cross Hwy. 54 at Washington Street, you can continue north over the railroad overpass to Spring Street. From there, go west on Spring Street to First Street and connect with the Red Trail. The Purple Trail is 3.8 miles long.

Yellow Trail This trail begins at Demitz Park on Third Street and East Riverview Expressway. When you cross the Riverview Expressway going south Third Street becomes First Street. Walk along the trail to Two Mile Avenue. Options: Join the Airport trail at Two Mile Avenue where it turns east to Sampson Street then south to Griffith Avenue. You can then proceed east along Griffith Avenue to Nepco Lake Park. The Yellow Trail is 4.1 miles long.

Heritage River Walks Three fascinating river walks await you in downtown Wisconsin Rapids, each filled with engaging stories of the people who preceded us in time, and the places that mark our community’s rich heritage. Sandhill Wildlife Area Nestled on an oak upland between two marshes is the trail head of Sandhill’s Swamp Buck Trail. This trail takes the adventuresome off the beaten path through forests and over myriad marshes that look much the same as they did following the glacier’s retreat 10,000 years ago. The trail ends at North Bluff, 3.5 miles from the trail head. A spring or fall experience on the Swamp Buck Trail is beyond description. South Wood County Recreation Trail Circle the wooded shoreline of Lake Wazeecha, which is the Indian name for “lake of the land of the pines,” on this 4.1 mile multi-use recreation trail, complete with picnic areas and unforgettable views. Wisconsin River Trail You’ll find glorious trees, singing birds, river views, and great company along the Wisconsin River Trail. Traveling from downtown Wisconsin Rapids through Port Edwards and into Nekoosa, this 9.5-mile trail connects the communities through a dedicated, paved, bike trail. Pack a picnic, grab a map, and set off on a family adventure. map key Blue Trail The Blue Trail is paved and follows the route of the old railroad bed. The trail runs from Seneca Road which is the border between Rapids and Port Edwards. You can travel north to West Grand Avenue. Along the way you will go through numerous wetland and forest areas as well as passing the City Zoo. Options: Just south of the City Zoo you can cross over to join the Red Trail. At West Grand Avenue you might cross the Riverview Expressway and connect with the Green Trail. The Blue Trail is 3.1 miles long. Green Trail The Green Trail follows the Riverview Expressway east through the city. When you get to the intersection of Hwy. 54 and the Expressway, you can continue east on County Hwy. W into the Town of Grand Rapids. The Green Trail also travels north to Reddin Road. The Green Trail is 6.6 miles long.

Ahdawagam Trail System More than 20 miles of biking trails are included in the City of Wisconsin Rapids’ recreational system. Traversing through wooded and urban areas, along the riverfront, or aside city streets, the system is composed of five distinct trails ranging from 3 to 7 miles in length.

Red Trail The Red Trail begins at Ben Hanson Park. (parking available) The paved trail runs along the Wisconsin River through Ben Hanson and Lyons Parks, and passes under the Riverview Expressway Bridge. The trail follows First Avenue to Grand Avenue. Cross Grand Avenue Bridge into Veterans and Mead Rapids Parks. The trail resumes its northward trek along First Street in the Village of Biron. The Red Trail is 3.8 miles long.

Cranberry Highway® Mid-September to late October Curling past fields and farms, creeks and clouds, waterfowl and other wonders, the Cranberry Highway® reveals some of the best fall color you’ll see this season: the red sea of cranberries coupled with the blazing yellows from fall leaves. This self-guided drive stretches for almost 50 miles along century-old cranberry beds from Wisconsin Rapids to Warrens, and between Pittsville and Nekoosa. We’ve come up with a list of places you don’t want to miss along the route. Included are well-known sights such as the famous Cranberry Discovery Center and lesser-known areas such as the state of Wisconsin’s Sandhill Wildlife Area. Sandhill Wildlife Area Trumpeter Trail Mid April–late October The Trumpeter Trail Auto Tour, a 14-mile, allweather road, provides a quiet glimpse into the area’s wildlife and habitats. Interpretive signs along the trail provide information on area wildlife, habitat management and unique features. Climb one of three observation towers located throughout the area to catch an aerial view of the wildlife and habitat in its undisturbed form. A small herd of American bison, white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, Canada geese, ducks, loons, bald eagles, sandhill cranes, shorebirds, songbirds, hawks, owls and furbearers find a great home here at Sandhill. You will find the land is a remote, quiet wildlife oasis amidst a bustling world dominated by people.

Let nature perk up your senses as you enjoy our waters. Spend the afternoon on a relaxing canoe ride- listen carefully to hear a fish jump or a bullfrog’s croak. When you’ve had enough peace and quiet, ditch the canoe for a boat, rev up the motor, and get ready for a thrill! Don’t forget our most popular water activity — fishing! Whether you choose to compete in one of our yearly tournaments or just savor a casual day on the riverbank,you’ll find plenty of fishing spots here. Wisconsin River: From its headwaters on the WisconsinMichigan border, it falls more than 1,000 feet on its 500-mile journey through the states, before emptying into the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Once full of logging rafts and tradesman, the river now tells a success story based on thriving aquatic life and a variety of recreational opportunities, including several scenic parks and trails located in and around downtown Wisconsin Rapids. Lake Arrowhead: Developed in the 1970s, Lake Arrowhead totals more than 300 acres and is surrounded by a private residential development. Public use of facilities is restricted to Lake Arrowhead County Park, located on the west end of the lake off 15th Avenue. The park features a boat launch, beach, picnic area and restrooms. Open May 1–Nov. 1. Lake Camelot: More than 445 acres includes northern pike, bass, walleye and pan fish. A public boat launch at Lake Camelot is maintained by Adams County. The launch is located in the Town of Rome on 10th Avenue off Apache Avenue. Lake Dexter: Developed in 1962, Dexter Lake totals some 300 acres and is surrounded by more than 1,000 acres of wild or undeveloped land with abundant wildlife and game fish. With a maximum depth of 17 feet, Dexter Lake offers a wide variety of fishing opportunities including northern pike, walleye, bass, crappie, perch, bluegills and suckers. Dexter County Park includes two boat launches, a handicapped fishing pier and a fish cleaning house. Lake Nepco: Venture onto nearly 500 acres of pristine water at Lake Nepco. Surrounded by Nepco Lake County Park, located 1 mile south of Wisconsin Rapids on Hwy. 13, the lake and park were donated to the county in 1977 by Nekoosa Papers, Inc. The park features a beach area, boat ramp, picnic area, playground, handicapped access boat dock and small shelter. With a maximum depth of 29 feet, Nepco Lake features a wide variety of fishing including northern pike, walleye, bass, musky and bluegill. Lake Petenwell: Wisconsin’s second largest body of water (23,000 acres). As home to a variety of game fish, including northern pike, bass, walleye, pan fish and musky, Petenwell hosts a variety of fishing tournaments throughout the year.

Cross-country skiing is everywhere, with hundreds of miles of well-marked trails traversing private lands and state areas. Break away from the more crowded touring centers and let yourself experience the splendid isolation of the Wisconsin woods in winter. Nepco Lake County Park is located one mile south of Wisconsin Rapids on County Road Z. The 125 acre park is open year round for outdoor activities from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. There are 7.1 km ( 4.4 miles) of ski trails on rolling terrain. Trails are groomed for skate and classic skiing by River Cities Nordic Ski Club. Passes can be purchased at the trailhead. Daily trail passes: $4/student or adult, free/7 and under; Annual trail passes: $10/student or adult, $25/family. For snow conditions visit www.co.wood.us/Departments/Parks/CrossCountry Skiing.aspx. Trail map is available at www.visitwisrapids.com. Richfield Area Trail is located seven miles north of Pittsville on County Trunk Highway A, and then one-half mile east on Heggelund Lane. The trail, approximately 5 miles long, is routed across open fields, through forests, and along Puff Creek to provide additional scenic value. There is also a 2-mile and 1-mile trail. All trails are marked and groomed during the winter season. Sandhill Wildlife Area’s auto trail closes in November, but that’s when the real magic begins. Bring your snowshoes to the walk-in gate and discover Sandhill’s winter secrets. Spy on otters, porcupines and coyotes, or work up an appetite breaking a trail up North Bluff. Learn about tracking or weave your own showshoes at the Outdoor Skills Center, then put your newly acquired skills to the test. Ski, boot, and pole rentals are readily available for a trouble-free winter adventure. Powers Bluff Winter Sports Area 6990 Bluff Dr., Arpin, WI 715-421-8422 www.co.wood.wi.us/departments/parks Powers Bluff, a 160-acre park located just 17 miles northwest of Wisconsin Rapids, is home to downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, tubing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. A two-story stone shelter building includes a warming house with concessions, ski, snowboard, boot, and pole rentals. Tow passes are available for purchase on site. Open seasonally, Sat. and Sun. from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Call ahead to verify holiday schedule. Powers Bluff is home to three downhill skiing and snowboarding trails varying from 1,320 to 1,500 feet in length. The estimated vertical drop is 250 feet. The downhill trails are operated by a handle grip tow, which is an ideal system for beginners and snow boarders. Ski, boot, and pole rentals are available on site. Handle grip tow tickets are available for purchase on site. Families will love tubing! Descend through the snow on a fast-paced tube while visiting Powers Bluff winter sports area. Four tube runs are available, with two handle grip tows that lessen your wait time during your winter adventure. Tubes are provided at no charge with the purchase of a handle grip tow ticket. No outside tubes are allowed.

Splash of Red Cranberry Tours Presented by Pittsville High School FFA 715-884-6412 www.pittsville.k12.wi.us/cranberry Tour several different area marshes, pick fresh fruit from the vine, and observe testing, cleaning and freezing of the fruit harvest with students from the nation’s only Cranberry Science Class as your tour guides. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Lake Wazeecha: Lake Wazeecha, the Indian name for “lake of the land of the pines,” totals 131 acres and is surrounded by South Wood County Park. The lake provides two beach areas, handicapped fish access area, and ample opportunities for boating, water skiing and fishing. A variety of pan fish, bass and northern pike were stocked in the lake during the county’s dredging project in 1994. Although famous for hosting the state’s annual Water Ski Show Tournament, Lake Wazeecha also prides itself on its two beaches, White Sand and Red Sand.

Then, of course, there’s that completely unique experience known as ice fishing! Let the local experts set you up in an ice house, get it well stocked, then kick back and enjoy a very Wisconsin tradition. A great way to get a second shot at the one that got away! Lakes Nepco, Dexter, and Wazeecha are excellent areas for ice fishing. Be extremely cautious of ice conditions at all times as Wood County Parks and Forestry Department does not monitor ice conditions. Pick up a fishing license at a variety of local businesses or at the DNR Service Center, 473 Griffith Ave., Tue.- Fri., 8:15 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. Too cold to spend the day? The nearby lakes offer many great fishing opportunities. Lake Petenwell, the second largest inland lake in the state at over 23,000 acres, abounds with white bass and northern pike. The yearly walleye run in the spring brings many anglers to Petenwell to try their luck. Snowmobile races run in the winter months and sailboats glide across the lake in the summer.

Additionally, Lake Camelot, Lake Sherwood and Lake Arrowhead are lakes surrounded by private development, yet each offers the public a boat launch, public beach and picnic areas. Licensed guides are available for tours Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Petenwell County Park offers the public campground with modern showers, restroom facilities, designated swimming areas, a boat launch, playground equipment, marked hiking trails

and firewood. There are also private parks in the area for camping such as Deer Trail Park that offers the kind of comfort and convenience you’d expect with showers, grocery store, heated pool, tennis court, arcade and other amenities.

Rome is a golfer’s paradise. Lake Arrowhead features not only a beautiful recreational lake, but also boasts two beautiful 18-hole golf courses. The Pines has been rated by Golf Digest as one of the top 100 public course offerings in the nation, calling The Pines a 4.5 star and award winner of “places to play.” Lake Arrowhead’s “The Lakes” was designed by renowned architect Ken Killan, and also shared the award from Golf Digest. Both courses feature large undulating greens and four sets of tee boxes to fit many skill levels.

For all that enjoy ATV sporting activities; Rome is the place to explore. Dyracuse Motorcycle Recreation Area is open early April through October offering thrill seekers Motocross, Hill Climb and Harescramble events. It is situated among 334 acres and features a motocross track, a supercross track and over 10 miles of trails. The Park includes picnic areas, playground, shelter and restrooms. Leap into the New Year with the Polar Bear Jump at the Lure. In February, have a blast at Lake Arrowhead’s Snoblast. Bundle up for the National Tri-Norse Ski Jump. In March Hop on over to Lake Arrowhead’s Easter Egg Hunt. Get ready to tee off at Lake Arrowhead’s Championship Golf Courses. Events take place throughout the year at the Lester Public Library of Rome. The Rome Idol Contest Finals will be held at Lake Arrowhead Clubhouse. In April, Dyracuse Recreational Area opens. Be sure to attend Rome’s Environmental Day. Rev it up in May on miles of ATV routes and trails. Watch the Shermalot Ski Team perform every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the summer and shop at the Ski Team’s Flower Sale at the Rome Town Hall. Take part in N.Y.A.T. (not your average triathlon), a fund raiser for the Lester Public Library of Rome. Enjoy a summer concert series at the Lure or Trails End. On Father’s Day weekend, the Rome Classic Car and Motorcycle Show is at the Alpine Village Business Park, and it ends with a cruise around the Lakes. Peruse the Farmer’s Market at the Alpine Village every Friday throughout the season. Celebrate the 4th of July at Lake Sherwood Lodge. Come with an appetite to the Taste of Rome.
