about the cover. . .

meet the photographer Name: Jordan Becker Hometown: Wisconsin Rapids Education: The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Scholastic/Career Ambition: I am currently pursuing a degree in Communications with a minor in Business Administration. Upon graduation I would like to work for a community organization in the Wisconsin Rapids Area.

Favorite Food: Anything with Pumpkin! Favorite Song: “I Was Here” by Lady Antebellum. About the cover photo: The cover photo is of the Wisconsin

Rapids Aqua Skiers ballet line ladies hopping off the dock and onto the water. I put a go pro camera on my ski to get the unique angle that most people would otherwise never get to see. I took this photo in July right before the Wisconsin State Water-Ski Show Championships. A ballet line is basically a ballet line on water. We go out in a big group of ladies put the rope on one of our feet and in between our legs while we do coordinated hand movements. It is one of my favorite acts in show skiing because it looks so graceful on the water even though it takes extreme dedication and balance.

How long have you been a member of the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers? What is your favorite style of skiing? I am very torn with this question because swivel

skiing is one of my favorites, but I also love to ski on random objects like a canoe paddle or a disk.

What other activities do you enjoy besides water-skiing? I enjoy snowmobiling, boating, camping, shopping, baking, photography and making crafts that I find on Pinterest!

What other community organizations are you involved with? The Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers Show Team, Kellner Knights Snowmobile Club, Rudolph River Rovers Snowmobile Club and the Wisconsin Rapids Area Sports Comission.

What would people be surprised to know about you? That I have competed in the

Miss Wisconsin Rapids Area Scholarship Pageant the past two years. I decided to compete two years ago to push myself out of my comfort zone. I was instantly hooked, it is such a great experience and I would recommend it to any young lady who would be interested in representing the Wisconsin Rapids Area. I’ve grown as a person through competing in the pageant and I look forward to competing one last time this year.

Why Visit Wisconsin Rapids? I think the real question is, why not visit Wisconsin Rapids?

There is so much to do in our area. We truly have something for everyone and every season! We host so many state and national tournaments from the Wisconsin State Water-Ski Show Championships to various BMX tournaments and many more! There are great snowmobile trails, along with beautiful scenery from the various lakes and the Wisconsin River. Not to mention that our community members are very close and welcoming! I am proud to be a part of this community. Over the years I’ve met so many great people that have become great friends. I don’t see a reason for me to ever want to leave the Wisconsin Rapids Area and I look forward to my future here!

Majestic antique homesteads, faded red barns, acres of cranberry beds, and family farms all contribute to Pittsville’s charms.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS Wisconsin Rapids, the county seat of Wood County is a consolidation of the two early towns of Grand Rapids and Centralia; the former lying on the east side of the Wisconsin River, the latter on the west. The Indians gave to this place along the river the name of “Ah-dah-wa-gam,” meaning the “two-sided rapids,” as the rapids here were divided in two by a great boulder. Wisconsin Rapids today offers a Midwestern charm and atmosphere while providing access to modern infrastructure and technology, abundant educational and cultural opportunities, a mix of retail establishments and restaurants, and a stable business environment.

VESPER Thriving on its rural charm, Vesper Ball Rdoffers much of what we prize about our nations agricultural areas. After a fire in 1894 that destroyed what is now considered “old” Vesper they rebuilt and utilized the burnt-over land for dairy farming to create new business. Vesper has a unique heritage and a tranquil charm that is reminiscent of years ago making it the quintessential example of perfect rural respite.

NEKOOSA The City of Nekoosa is a small residential community with a strong sense of place. What began as a fur trapping and trading community, the community’s prime location on the Wisconsin River soon led to other industries. Riverside Park is a striking spacious site, near Nekoosa’s business quarter which is home to several large events including Walleye Days in the spring. Be sure to mark your calendars and come enjoy the famous Giant Pumpkin Festival in the fall at the Nekoosa Business Park.

Capture the adventure The Ridges Golf Course 2311 Griffith Avenue, Wisconsin Rapids 715-424-3204 www.ridgesgolfcourse.com The Ridges is sometimes looked upon as a course with two distinctly different nine hole layouts. The front nine has more length and man-made hazards while God made the hazards of the back nine. The back nine is heavily wooded and begins on an actual ridge with a tee shot that overlooks towering pines, the Buena Vista Creek and the flourishing valley floor more than 80 feet below. Ask our members, and they’ll tell you that at The Ridges it is often best to leave the driver in your bag when you make the turn! The front nine has its challenges, but the back nine is undeniably different.

Upon opening in 1998, The Lakes Course promptly was nominated for Best New Public Course in America. The course features bentgrass fairways, sculpted bunkers, natural sands areas, large undulating greens and four sets of boxes to allow golfers to match the course yardage to their own ability. The Pines Course Golf Digest awarded The Pines a 4.5 Star “Places to Play” Award Winner and ranked the course among its top 75 public courses in America. Tucked among tall pines and lush woodlands, The Pines provides the ultimate golf experience for players of all skill levels. Opened in 1982, it is the original 18-hole championship course and has matured into the golfing equivalent of a fine wine.

Central Wisconsin’s unique topographical blend of winding hills and flat river areas make it one of the best areas for cycling enthusiasts. Downtown Wisconsin Rapids is quickly becoming a popular destination for cyclists with recent developments such as the Wisconsin River Trail. The area’s extensive network of trails extends outward to the suburbs, offering a multitude of cycling opportunities. Download various trail maps from our website at www.visitwisrapids.com. Ahdawagam Trail System More than 20 miles of biking trails are included in the City of Wisconsin Rapids’ recreational system. Traversing through wooded and urban areas, along the riverfront, or aside city streets, the system is composed of five distinct trails ranging from 3 to 7 miles in length. Heritage River Walks Three fascinating river walks await you in downtown Wisconsin Rapids, each filled with engaging stories of the people who preceded us in time, and the places that mark our community’s rich heritage. Download a trail map for each walk on our website. Each map includes historical information and trivia for kids! Sandhill’s Swamp Buck Trail Nestled on an oak upland between two marshes is the trail head of Sandhill’s Swamp Buck Trail. This trail takes the adventuresome off the beaten path through forests and over myriad marshes that look much the same as they did following the glacier’s retreat 10,000 years ago. The trail ends at North Bluff, 3.5 miles from the trail head. A spring or fall experience on the Swamp Buck Trail is beyond description. South Wood County Recreation Trail Circle the wooded shoreline of Lake Wazeecha, which is the Indian name for “lake of the land of the pines,” on this 4.1 mile multi-use recreation trail, complete with picnic areas and unforgettable views.

The Big Pull Guinness Book of World Records

LARGEST HUMAN WATERSKIING PYRAMID

Eric Gran, Big Pull Event Coordinator

What is a “Big Pull?” Big Pull pyramid attempts for waterskiing have been around for the last 12 years. Every other year or so several water ski show teams have gotten together to attempt larger and larger human waterskiing pyramids. Evinrude Outboard engines has been a flagship sponsor. It has taken large amounts of logistical planning to make these events happen over the years. Why Lake Wazeecha? We choose this site for the length of the lake, having plenty of water depth for safety and the willingness of the town to allow us to shutdown the Lake to all public boat traffic for the event. Local community support was an important part of the event. The topography of the area is conducive to this type of event with a large beach to layout equipment and easy parking within a lake park setting. Where were the skiers from? Five different show ski teams from the Midwest area came together to set this record . . . 1. Aqua Ducks – Burlington, Wisconsin 2. Backwater Gamblers – Rock Island, Illinois 3. Badgerland – Waukesha, Wisconsin 4. Beaverland Must-Skis – Beaver Dam, Wisconsin 5. Water Bugs – Muskego, Wisconsin How many attempts did it take? It took 3 attempts to break the world record. What is something you would never guess by looking at the photo? One thing you would never guess looking at the photo is that all 60 skiers came off of a custom made starting platform made out of old pontoon boats. Splash of Red Cranberry Tours Presented by Pittsville High School FFA 715-884-6412 www.pittsville.k12.wi.us/cranberry Tour several different area marshes, pick fresh fruit from the vine, and observe testing, cleaning and freezing of the fruit harvest with students from the nation’s only Cranberry Science Class as your tour guides. Whether you choose to compete in one of our yearly tournaments or just savor a casual day on the riverbank, you’ll find plenty of fishing spots here. the river now tells a success story based on thriving aquatic life and a variety of recreational opportunities, including several scenic parks and trails located in and around downtown Wisconsin Rapids. Lake Arrowhead: Developed in the 1970s, Lake Arrowhead totals more than 300 acres and is surrounded by a private residential development. Public use of facilities is restricted to Lake Arrowhead County Park, located on the west end of the lake off 15th Avenue. The park features a boat launch, beach, picnic area and restrooms. Open May 1–Nov. 1. Lake Camelot: More than 445 acres includes northern pike, bass, walleye and pan fish. A public boat launch at Lake Camelot is maintained by Adams County. The launch is located in the Town of Rome on 10th Avenue off Apache Avenue.

Lake Nepco: Venture onto nearly 500 acres of pristine water at Lake Nepco. Surrounded by Nepco Lake County Park, located 1 mile south of Wisconsin Rapids on Hwy. 13, the lake and park were donated to the county in 1977 by Nekoosa Papers, Inc. The park features a beach area, boat ramp, picnic area, playground, handicapped access boat dock and small shelter. With a maximum depth of 29 feet, Nepco Lake features a wide variety of fishing including northern pike, walleye, bass, musky and bluegill. Lake Petenwell: Wisconsin’s second largest body of water (23,000 acres). As home to a variety of game fish, including northern pike, bass, walleye, pan fish and musky, Petenwell hosts a variety of fishing tournaments throughout the year. Locally known “hot spots” include Devil’s Elbow, the mouth of Fourteen Mile Creek, Barnum Bay, and Strongs Prairie. These areas provide abundant underwater structure and harbor good concentrations of fish. A variety of boat launches are located on Petenwell. Visit our website for more information. Lake Sherwood: Venture onto 246 acres of water for an afternoon of boating or fishing northern pike, bass, walleye and pan fish. A public boat launch at Lake Sherwood Lodge is maintained by Adams County. The launch is located behind the Shermalot Motel on Queens Way, Rome. Lake Wazeecha: Lake Wazeecha, the Indian name for “lake of the land of the pines,” totals 131 acres and is surrounded by South Wood County Park. The lake provides two beach areas, handicapped fish access area, and ample opportunities for boating, water skiing and fishing. A variety of pan fish, bass and northern pike were stocked in the lake during the county’s dredging project in 1994. Although famous for hosting the state’s annual Water Ski Show Tournament, Lake Wazeecha also prides itself on its two beaches, White Sand and Red Sand.

winter fun

Our winters are filled with postcard perfect scenes of snowy trees bordering frozen lakes. While the snow affords plenty of peaceful views, it also provides fun for adults and kids alike! Snowmobiling has a long and cherished history in the Wisconsin Rapids Area. With some 254.7 miles of snowmobile trails to enjoy in Wood County, the trail system and its tributaries (extending throughout the Heart of Wisconsin!) connect clubs, restaurants and charming towns to allow riders a totally snowmobile-oriented touring and vacation experience. Call the WRACVB at 800-554-4484 to have a trail map sent to you prior to your arrival. Feel the thrill of cruising over a frozen terrain or a well-groomed trail just once and experience a thrilling ride through our winter wonderland. Ice fishing is a completely unique experience and once you try it you’ll be hooked for life! Let the local experts set you up in an ice house, get it well stocked, then kick back and enjoy a very Wisconsin tradition. A great way to get a second shot at the one that got away! Lakes Nepco, Dexter, and Wazeecha are excellent areas for ice fishing. Be extremely cautious of ice conditions at all times as Wood County Parks and Forestry Department does not monitor ice conditions. Pick up a fishing license at a variety of local businesses or at the DNR Service Center, 473 Griffith Ave., Tues.- Fri., 8:15 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. Too cold to spend the day? Be sure to check the annual calendar of events for Historic Point Basse’s ice harvest or one of our local community’s ice fisheries!

Cranberry Facts Wisconsin was projected to produce 4.9 million barrels of cranberries in 2013… that’s enough to circle the earth 50 times!

Vacation Rental Guest Homes

Keep cranberries close to your heart…

they contain significant amounts of antioxidants, known for protection against heart disease!

Wisconsin has over 180,000 acres of cranberry beds… that’s enough to occupy all of Chicago, IL!

Approximately 15,000 years ago, Wisconsin Rapids was the bed of a Glacial Lake. Due

to this unique environmental history, the land now has sandy soil and a high water table… the ideal environment for growing cranberries!

The cranberry is the Official State Fruit of Wisconsin as of 2004!

Castle Rock • Petenwell Lakes • Lake Arrowhead Golf 2nd & 4th largest lakes in Wisconsin • Waterfront & offshore privacy • 30-45 minutes N of Wisconsin Dells • Only 3.5 hours from Chicago or Minneapolis • Over 20 homes to choose from • Privately owned, year-round homes • Accommodations for 4-16 • Weekly, nightly (4-night minimum stay during summer)

Smile! Cranberries reduce the risk of gum disease! Wisconsin cranberry growers annually harvest enough cranberries to supply every man, woman and child in the world with 26 cranberries!

Cranberries have tiny air pockets that cause them to bounce and float! The cranberry got its name from early settlers who thought that the blossom of the

cranberry vine resembled the head of a crane. Nowadays, the name crane-berry has been shortened to cranberry. Many festivals celebrate the harvest season for this beloved berry, but only one celebrates its namesake, BLOSSOM season!

Cranberry Blossom Fest

Cranberry Highway® Mid-September to late October Curling past fields and farms, creeks and clouds, waterfowl and other wonders, the Cranberry Highway® reveals some of the best fall color you’ll see this season: the red sea of cranberries coupled with the blazing yellows from fall leaves. This self-guided drive stretches for almost 50 miles along century-old cranberry beds from Wisconsin Rapids to Warrens, and between Pittsville and Nekoosa. We’ve come up with a list of places you don’t want to miss along the route. Included are well-known sights such as the famous Cranberry Discovery Center and lesser-known areas such as the state of Wisconsin’s Sandhill Wildlife Area. Create your own fall harvest experience while uncovering this unique Wisconsin industry. Capture the Town of Rome

I had a blast ATV riding at Dyracuse Recreational Area. My smile was so big I got sand in my teeth. Now that is what I call experiencing Wisconsin fun!

The nearby lakes offer many great fishing opportunities. Lake Petenwell, the second largest inland lake in the state at over 23,000 acres, abounds with white bass and northern pike. The yearly walleye run in the spring brings many anglers to Petenwell to try their luck. Snowmobile races run in the winter months and sailboats glide across the lake in the summer. Additionally, Lake Camelot, Lake Sherwood and Lake Arrowhead are lakes surrounded by private development, yet each offers the public a boat launch, public beach and picnic areas. Licensed guides are available for tours Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Rome is a golfer’s paradise. Lake Arrowhead features not only a beautiful recreational lake, but also boasts two

beautiful 18-hole golf courses. The Pines has been rated by Golf Digest as one of the top 100 public course offerings in the nation, calling The Pines a 4.5 star and award winner of “places to play.” Lake Arrowhead’s “The Lakes” was designed by renowned architect Ken Killan, and also shared the award from Golf Digest. Both courses feature large undulating greens and four sets of tee boxes to fit many skill levels. The Wisconsin Trapshooting Association has a new world-class Olympic style trapshooting facility located in the Town of Rome. The site features an RV Park, an Education and Training Center, ATV Trails, and is home to the Wisconsin State Shoot. This fantastic travel destination is a trip of a lifetime.

For all that enjoy ATV sporting activities; Rome is the place to explore. Dyracuse Recreational Area is open early April through October offering thrill seekers Motocross, Hill Climb and Harescramble events. It is situated among 334 acres and features a motocross track, a supercross track and over 10 miles of trails. The Park includes picnic areas, playground, shelter and restrooms.
