MUSKY MEMORIES Thank you for 50 years of the Musky Marathon. Over the past 50 years, there have been a lot of changes in musky fishing. But, one thing has remained the same—the thrill of the hunt. Since 1964, the Musky Marathon has celebrated the excitement of musky fishing in Vilas County by recognizing anglers for the fish they caught and the experiences they had. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Musky Marathon. May your musky memories last forever!

Vilas County offers hundreds of musky lakes.

16

Another happy Vilas County musky angler.

One of the most remote hunter/hiking trails in the Vilas County Forest, this system of trails passes through stands of aspen, oak and northern hardwoods. Terrain is rolling hills. Roads accessing these trails are town roads and are plowed during the winter. A part of this system, east of White Squaw Lake Road, also serves as a snowmobile trail. • Length: 7.4 miles • Location: From the intersection of Hwy 45 and County Hwy K in Conover, continue west on County Hwy K to County Hwy S. Turn north on County Hwy S and continue to Baker Lake Road. Turn west on Baker Lake Road and continue approximately 7 miles to White Squaw Lake Road. Turn north on White Squaw Lake Road and continue about 0.5 miles to the first of several bermed access points.

Located close to the North Lakeland Discovery Center and spanning more than 1,300 acres of private land and public Northern Highland–American Legion State Forest lands, this network of silent-sport trails offers opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, classic and skate skiing and snowshoeing. In winter, some of these trails intersect with the snowmobile trail. Trail development and expansion is continuing. • Length: 2 miles developed single-track mountain bike trails; 7 miles of skate and classic ski trail will be available by winter 2013; and 1 mile of trail has been flagged for snowshoe trail • Location: 3.5 miles north of the North Lakeland Discovery Center on Hwy W. Trail head and parking at the intersection of Hwy W and Hwy J (by the snowmobile trail).
