Shanon completed his studies at Toimairangi, School of Mäori Art, Te Wänanga o Aotearoa, Hastings in 2008 and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Mäori Arts. Shanon is an ‘Artist in Residence’ at Toimairangi working to establish himself as a practising artist. In 2010 he has his sights set on completing a Graduate Diploma of Teaching with a view to sharing his knowledge as a teacher in Kura Kaupapa Mäori. Shanon descends from the iwi of Te Tairäwhiti. Inspiration for his art comes from tribal and whänau stories. Tä Moko is another art form that strongly influences his work as it relates to his genealogy and the markings of tüpuna. About the artwork: This work acknowledges my tribal and whänau connections with the sea and coast. It is about the importance of our ocean, foreshore, seabed and the many environmental and resource threats to the health and well-being of the ocean and its eco-systems. This series is also an acknowledgement of the journey through Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa and the Polynesian islands from the ancient homeland of Hawaiki to Aotearoa. The colours and patterns represent sea-life as well as passages of water and flowing tides.

our ever-changing world. Although times may be tough, I am optimistic that we can work together to use this time productively, to gain new skills and move closer to our dreams and aspirations. With jobs in short supply, there has never been a better time to study, and I am excited about the year ahead. This year, we have carefully chosen a balance of programmes that accurately reflects the needs of our tauira and supports the needs of the communities we serve. For many of you, Te Wänanga o Aotearoa will be the platform from which you will launch a career. For others, we will be a helping hand to get you into your own business. And for others still, we will be the start of an educational pathway that leads you to study at a higher level, either with Te Wänanga o Aotearoa or with another wänanga, polytechnic or university. OPEN WĀNANGA Open Wānanga offers programmes ranging from English as a Second Language to the study of New Zealand history, Māori culture and transition to study and careers. Programmes are offered at levels 1 – 4 and include qualiﬁcations in employment skills, Māori and practical English language skills. The ESOL programmes are delivered in a friendly classroom environment. Mauri Ora, Mahi Ora and Papa Ako are home based learning programmes that are part time and fee free.

OVERVIEW Te Pūtaketanga o Te Reo is a new Level 4, total immersion reo programme. Its key focus will be on the development of all reo skills with a special emphasis on kōrero and will be the foundation reo immersion programme offered by Te Wānanga o Aoteaora.

The Certificate in Tā Moko Appreciation will prepare students interested in becoming practitioners to seek further training, preferably alongside a recognised practitioner or at a higher level of learning. Note: Graduates of this programme will not be prepared to enter directly into the industry as a moko practitioner.

OVERVIEW This diploma programme captures and enhances the Mäori essence and protocols of what is collectively known as Mäori art. During the programme you will be taught through the following papers: Creative Process: using drawing and design process to develop ideas and work. Media Practice: exploring media potential to develop ideas. Cultural Studies: understanding kawa and tikanga and the concepts of wairua, whanaungatanga and türangawaewae. Studio Management and Practice: organisation, time management, presentation and documentation within studio.

Eighty percent of Ngä Whare Whäriki Köhungahunga – Early Learning teachers are qualified and registered, ensuring that children are provided with an environment that is embedded in Te Whäriki (the Early Childhood Education Curriculum). GUIDE TO ENROLMENT WHAT CAN I STUDY? Choose from over 40 programmes at certificate, diploma and degree level across a wide range of subject areas, including business, computing, social services, teaching, arts, performing arts, Mäori language and iwi environment.

WHAT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR STUDY? We offer different modes of delivery, such as full-time, contact basis, and distance study with the support of kaitiaki. We also offer mixed-mode delivery styles, which are a combination of methodologies like face-to-face contact with kaiako during night classes, weekend classes, noho marae (weekend stay) and computer-aided instruction.

HOW DO I ENROL? Programme information can be sourced from this prospectus, and brochures and flyers are available at one of our campuses close to you. Or you can contact our Call Centre for an Information Pack. Once you have decided on the programme you would like to enrol in, contact our Customer Service Centre for an enrolment pack. This contains an enrolment form along with a description of the information you will need to include with your completed enrolment form. Once we have received your application, we will contact you to come in and meet with one of our kaiako to undergo a pre-enrolment assessment and interview. Note: You can enrol in only one full-time programme at a time.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO COMPLETE MY ENROLMENT? All sections on the enrolment form must be completed and you must include all the required documentation – this is outlined in the enrolment form checklist on the back of the enrolment form. CHECKLIST FOR STUDENTS You can provide one of the following: • active NSI number; • passport; • birth certificate (including a marriage certificate if your maiden name has changed); • certificate of NZ Citizenship; or • whakapapa countersigned by a kaumatua, including a declaration stating date and place of birth. This option is only available for New Zealand Mäori over the age of 60. Note: New Zealand citizens may supply other evidence of their legal name: marriage certificate accompanied by a birth certificate or a letter from a bank. All documentation must provide evidence of your date of birth, citizenship and residency. Cook Island, Niue and Tokelau citizens must supply one of the same items of evidence that are required of New Zealand citizens.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY ENROLMENT IS SUCCESSFUL? If you meet all the requirements, you will be notified before the programme starts. An acceptance letter will be sent to you confirming the name of the programme, start and finish date, course fees (if applicable), class location and your kaiako (tutor's) name.

WHAT IF I WANT TO CHANGE MY PROGRAMME OR ENROLMENT DETAILS? If you want to change your programme after it has started, you will need to speak with your kaiako or visit the Student Registry Administrator on your campus. S/he will provide you with a Change of Enrolment form. You must do this within the 10% cut-off period after the start date of your programme.
