and Rationale

Component two of the Artist Series project requires a designed poster as well as an environmental application. I was required to look back at component one, research different galleries, as well as study various poster designs to come up with my final designs. With trying different variations, and discussion with my instructor I created a poster that suits my artist. Using the typeface I created as the focal point in the poster and creating hierarchy in typeface I accomplished the task of this assignment. Several revisions happened, each having their own reason as to why they needed to happen. This assignment taught me plenty about how type can be a message, as well as the main focus. It reminded me how information is perceived and how important it is to establish differences between primary type, secondary type, and tertiary type. The second portion of this assignment, the gallery application, helped me connect to branding. It taught me how to apply the same type in different ways, but still keep the connection between the two. Overall, this portion of the assignment teaches about how to portray the information in a matter of importance to the viewer. This lesson can be applied to many different portions of graphic design, including component three in this Artist Series.

Typeface Edits

October 8-11, 2013

To begin my process for this assignment, I returned to my original typeface in project one. Here I started to make edits that were suggested from both my insturctor and my classmates. I recreated multiple revisions of my typeface looking at each letter individually, and only moved on when I felt that each one worked together.

This is the original typeface that I created in component one. Some of the comments my instructor and classmates made were: - yellow was hard to see once distance was gained. Try putting it as the negative space - line up the x-heights - line up all the colours in the letterforms - Some letters are weaker than others

First edits - yellows were moved to negative space - some of the other colours were adjusted as well - x heights were adjusted, changing some of the letter froms thicknesses. - line up of all forms

Word Play - three letters in a row with similar colours is not wanted - letter “Y is appearing weak compared to other letter forms.

Second edits - “W” and “Y” adjusted to give more support - Colours on letter froms adjusted to avoid consistant palettes in a row

Word Play - Colours appear to work better in words. - letter “Y” is starting to lose it’s image as a letter from. Needs work

Third edits - Letter “Y returned to original form.

Word Play - Letter “Y” fits better with other words, no longer lost at end of the word. - As working a different instructor, one who does not know specifics about project, mis read the “I” as an “O”. Those letter’s colours need adjustments.

Fourth edits - Colours in the letter “I are adjusted to make the positive space stand out more compared to the negative space.

Word Play - Everything seems to fit, time to move on.

Gallery Research and Decisions

With this project we have to decide on three galleries that our chosen artist would have an art exhibit in. I started off by searching galleries Peter had already done shows in. Next I decided I wanted to choose art galleries in Canada, some that I have been too myself. I began to look up galleries in the area and from there decided which would best suite Peter.

Already Exhibitted Gallery: Mary Boone Gallery Location: New York Type of Art: expanded space for large-scale and dramatic installations.

Already Exhibitted Gallery: Galleria Massimo Minini Location: Brescia Type of Art: Conceptual and minimal art, foreign artists, figurative artists.

Possible Exhibition Gallery: Medalta Location: Medicine Hat Type of Art: Historic, century old industrial architecture with elegant, and modern touches. Option: No. The architecture is old and has too much of its own characteristics that would take attention away from Peter’s work or just clash with the minimalism and geometry of it all.

Possible Exhibition Gallery: Art Gallery of Calgary Location: Calgary Type of Art: Contempary art through leading exhibits and art programs Option: Yes, the large floor space with lots of wall space to hang work. Peter’s work would fit in with the other contempary exhibits from the past as well.

Possible Exhibition Gallery: Mendel Art Gallery Location: Saskatoon Type of Art: Contempary and historical art Option: Yes, large enough space, that allows walls to be painted as well. Could be useful if a partnership exhibit is chosen.

Possible Exhibition Gallery: Esplande Location: Medicine Hat Type of Art: Contempary and historical art by national and international artists. Option: Yes, large space for his work to be placed and hung. Also has a modern look for his minimal and geometric work to be placed and not be overwhelmed by gallery.

Poster Examples

Since this project is a poster design, I decided to look at and research other posters. I examined typographic posters because this is the type of poster I was to create. I furthered my study by looking at minimal and geometric posters. Peter’s artwork is both minimal and geometric, this is why I studied both poster styles. I feel like it is my job to create a poster that demonstrate all of these styles I researched.

Unplugged

This catalyst was to make me think out of the box. I looked back at old designs I had created, and reproduced them analogly. After that I produced the same poster but with both elements, the analog and the digital. This process reminds me that you don’t have to pick one or the other, that blends of mediums can be quite beautiful. Looking at the poster I built, there is part of me that wish I would have originally designed it this way. The concept was to attract kids to the program so if I had used both analog and digital it would really show both sides of the program offered at the college.

Initial Sketches and Poster Developement October 15- 29, 2013

This section demonstrates my poster developement for this project. I started with hand drawn sketches and from there I progressed to digital form so I can edit and try different variations of the same design. I planned to keep the poster geometric, using squares, and rectangles throughout the process.

Exhibition notes: - All text, primary, secondary, and tertiary, determind - Notice in traveling didn’t make sense, switches were created to make sure the the show traveled from west to east.

Initial Sketch 1 - Imitation of artwork - Peter Halley Minimally Geometric written in designed type. - Secondary seperated in rectangles - Tertiary written along the bottom - Secondary and tertiary imitate line work in the original artwork

Digital Version 4-5 - Back to original of a four column system, but make poster more narrow so type size is decreased but more negative space is made. - Although lone “Y matching colours above keep it connected and words are still read properly - Negative space gives a nice separation in between types. - Secondary type takes same amount of space as the main letter forms. - Use of serif and san-serifs help separate the information being read. - Tertiary type is kept to the four column system that then also follows the san-serif and seif fonts keeping it connected even with amount of negative space - Like this solution compared to all others.
