Stats: Human Services Deputy Director, graduate of The Citadel and University of South Carolina, Army veteran, natural body builder, Shereta’s husband and Roddy’s dad.

Obstacles overcome: I came from humble beginnings with little to no guidance. I lived in the toughest neighborhoods in Charleston, S.C. I witnessed stabbings, drug dealing and every unsavory act you can imagine. My saving grace was school.

Favorite restaurant: Arnold’s – I love their dry rubbed wings and the great atmosphere. The owner is a fantastic guy.

Proudest professional accomplishment: I am proud to have helped guide the Cumberland County Department of Public Health to its first accreditation. I am proud to assist in the implementation of electronic health records and the many other great things we do to promote, prevent and protect the public’s health.

What did you want to be when you grew up? The general manager of a fine dining restaurant. I worked one day in a Greek restaurant in my hometown (Charleston, S.C.). The kitchen was disgusting, and I could not serve food to patrons.

I came from humble beginnings. My saving grace was school.

Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself, as Dr. Robin Kay, establishing a non-profit community development center and community missions school. I love and will continue to serve in Christian ministry. I may have another name change (smile) and am sure to have more stamps in my passport from global travel. I have a life goal to spend extended time in every habitable continent other than North America (two more to go!)

Favorite gift as a child: My absolute favorite birthday gift during my childhood was a homemade bunnyshaped coconut cake with jelly bean decorations that my mom made during the best house party with friends. She’s so creative, but I think people know that about her.

Stats:

Community service:

Donor services manager, church volunteer, University of North Carolina graduate, rock music fan.

I am an active member and volunteer at my church, Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church. I am serving my third year as treasurer for the local chapter of the Daughters of Penelope (The objectives of the Daughters of Penelope are to promote Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, family and individual excellence. Locally, we also support programs that assist victims of domestic violence.)

Proudest professional accomplishment: I am most proud professionally when I visit a grantee and witness the good work they are doing. It’s a nice reminder that the not-soglamorous back-office work I do is making a difference to someone in the community. I process an average of 1,500 gifts to CCF each year and about 900 grants from over 400 funds managed by CCF.

Life-changing moment: A post-college, six-week, solo trip to Greece to visit family and friends and see different parts of the country. It’s humbling to travel to another country by yourself and to find your way around.

Favorite bands: U2, Led Zeppelin.

I absolutely love international traveling. I have had the opportunity to experience leisure traveling in over 10 countries. My goal is to visit all seven continents.

Proudest professional accomplishment: Opening Noah’s Art of Spring Lake on March 18, 2013, was certainly a great accomplishment. What did you want to be when you grew up? As a child I wanted to be an attorney. I first wanted to be a civil rights attorney.

Community service: At Noah’s Art, I offer two free weeks of summer camps to two children who are currently in foster care. I contact the department of social services and have the social workers to submit names of children who can benefit. In addition, I am member of several civic organizations.

Proudest professional accomplishment: Knowing that the little girl from Laurinburg is able to give back to the community in so many ways and offer jobs to people who otherwise may be unemployed.

Obstacles overcome: I am a single mother of three. I earned my nursing degree while managing a local restaurant, where I worked 40-50 hours per week. My father passed away in 2004, just as I started my home care agency. I was also in an abusive marriage that nearly took my life, but I continued to pursue my educational goals and create the best life for my children.

Where do you see yourself in five years? I plan to have my doctorate in nursing and continue to expand both businesses. I would like to have another bookstore opened and also start a Bible college.

Life-changing moment: I had a former employee to tell me how grateful he was I gave him a job and a second chance at life. Years ago he was selling drugs and never thought he would do more than that. He said without that opportunity he may be dead or in jail.

I had to learn how to walk again, put on clothes, brush my teeth and other daily activities.

I continued to pursue my educational goals and create the best life possible for my children.

Obstacles overcome: At the age of 21, on April 24, 2004, while serving in Iraq, my 5-ton truck was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device. The truck flipped 10 times and crushed me inside. I sustained a crushed pelvis, fractured back, traumatic brain injury and suffered a list of other injuries. I spent 13 months at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in D.C. While

there, I underwent a massive surgery placing large screws in my pelvis to keep me together. I also had to learn how to walk again, put on clothes, brush my teeth and other daily activities.

Life-changing moment: The moment that changed my life was when I was lying crushed under my 5-ton truck in Iraq and the realization that I was going to die, without doing all I could to help someone else. Knowing that I would not be here to see my kids grow up. At that same moment I heard God, and I knew that He will always be with me. That is when my life changed.

Fact few people know: I like to write books/poetry and dance.

grandfather’s red and white pickup truck, and go down to the Food Trust (food bank). We would pick up a truck load of food, bring it back to our community and share with many of the families.

Little known fact:

My proudest professional moment was receiving the employee of the year award at the Lowcountry Food Bank in Charleston, S.C. This was an award that was driven by the employees, and to be selected by my peers was very rewarding.

I am a self-taught musician and play the piano by ear, and I love to write poetry.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Since the age of seven I always wanted to be an Air Force pilot. During my physical exam, it was confirmed that I was color blind and told that I will never fly in the USAF. It was a life-changing moment for me, so I served as a chaplain’s assistant.

Stats: Partner and creative director, Fayetteville State graduate, father of two and avid reader.

Proudest professional accomplishment: The 60-plus national and international design and advertising awards I have received over the last nine years.

Life-changing moment: The birth of my first child – it was the craziest few hours of my life. I feel like I watched it on TV or something, like an outof-body experience. I was an old pro by the time we had my son, but the first time was amazingly different.

What advice would you give your 16-year-old self? I think I would have told myself to not ask for permission. We all have this notion that we have to do certain things before we can

proceed. Permission is no longer needed to do the things you want in life, and there is no order to those things. If you want something go get it.

What did you want to be when you grew up? An FBI agent. Later in life I wanted to be an architect. I found out math was a big deal in architecture, so I switched to business.

Community service: I will continue to donate my personal time to help specific non-profits achieve their fundraising efforts. I also coach T-ball and football for my children, and helping kids learn the importance of teamwork is a great feeling.

Favorite book: When I was a kid I read “Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I still reference it as one of my favorite books 25 years later, and I read two to three books per month.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Up until about the age of 10, I wanted to either be a horse trainer or an Olympic gymnast like Mary Lou Retton. I chose chemistry in high school, because I had to teach it to myself. I had a terrible teacher

sm

for the subject, but really loved learning it which probably made me not afraid of it.

Little known fact: I played the clarinet from 5th grade all the way through college, and have played intermittently with some community groups while in graduate school and here in Fayetteville.

Worst job ever: I worked as the fried rice cook in a drivethru teriyaki restaurant in high school. I lasted about 2 weeks.

Favorite book:
