by Laura Schofer What began as an nine-year odyssey of protest by a group of community activists to update the 1950s-style sewage treatment process at the Jones Beach sewage treatment plant has come to an end. The long-awaited construction project linking the Jones Beach Sewage Treatment Plant to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant outfall pipe is now complet-

ed. The project began in August 2010 at a cost of $2 million, paid for by the state. The project went online in July. Now, treated sewage from Jones Beach will be discharged, via the Cedar Creek outfall pipe, into the ocean. Previously treated sewage from Jones Beach was discharged into the Sloop Channel in the western bays. The new outflow pipe will help protect Zach’s Bay and the western bays say envi-

NM adopts six-day school cycle North Merrick Superintendent David Feller continues his overview of new school district initiatives for the 2012-13 school year. The first part ran in last week’s annual Back to School edition of this newspaper, which is available online. We [the North Merrick Schools] emphasize that despite the continuous focus on state testing, we will stay to true to our mission in providing our students with a well-rounded education and foster practices “to develop individuals who respect themselves and others, are flexible, open-minded and capable of relating to and communicating with others.” In keeping with the theme of respect, we have modified existing policies and procedures to make certain that the district is in full compliance with the Dignity for all Students Act. You will be finding out more information about this from our building principals as well as referring to the revised student Code of Conduct, which is included in our district calendar. An integral component of our educational program will continue to be our commitment to the arts – both visual and performing. We pride ourselves in knowing that our curricular and extracurricular offerings in the arts (art and music instruction, musical and choral performing groups, and theater arts) are second to none. It should also be noted that the district will be moving to a six-day cycle. A letter was sent home to district parents about it. The biggest change with this cycle is that physical education will be offered on an every-other-day basis for all students. Some of the advantages of a six-day cycle

include: providing a consistent predictable structure of time for the children; providing “fairness” in that classes are not lost because of days off; providing “fairness” because “special classes are held during different times during the day; providing larger blocks of planning time for teachers; providing time for teachers at each grade level and other “teams” for collaborative planning; and providing a consistent time for all school assembly and grade level enrichment projects. North Merrick prides itself on the close partnership that exists among all stakeholders. With this in mind, I encourage all parents to become actively engaged with their building level PTA as well as our district SEPTA, which provides important information that is applicable for all children. I wish to thank our PTA/SEPTA leadership for all of the work that they do in support of our children and staff. I wish to thank our entire staff for fostering a nurturing and caring atmosphere within each of our schools. While other districts have been experiencing declining enrollments, our student population has remained fairly consistent. When asked, virtually all of our new parents have told me that the single reason why they chose to live in North Merrick is the quality of our schools! Finally, I extend a special note of appreciation to our entire summer staff (clerical, custodial and administrative) for all of their efforts to make certain that our schools are ready for your children on the first day of school – September 4. Enjoy the remaining days of summer. — David S. Feller Superintendent of Schools

Jones Beach sewage pipe to ocean is complete ronmentalists, including Rob Weltner, president of S.P.L.A.S.H. (Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors). Bill Fonda, spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said, “We have inspected the force main [main conduit pipe from the plant along Ocean parkway to Cedar Creek outflow pipe] and connections, and have approved the start up of the force main. “We also have certification from the professional engineering firm of Lockwood, Kessler and Bartlett out of Syosset that the design and construction of the effluent pump station and force main have been completed to state standards. This certification was made on June 27.” Additionally, Mr. Fonda said the “Jones Beach outfall pipe to Sloop Channel has been sealed permanently.” Environmentalists respond “This project will go a long way to improving the overall water quality in this highly used area, especially for the busy summer season,” said Mr. Weltner. “The completion of this project means residents, boaters and beachgoers will have cleaner bays in summer. In particular, the popular Zach’s Bay, which has been prone to beach closures in the past, will be a safer beach for families who love this area!” stated Adrienne Esposito, executive director, Citizens Campaign for the Environment. Gary Smith, president of the BellmoreWantagh chapter of SPLASH, told this newspaper that activism by a solid group of residents, which included peaceful protests at the Jimmy Buffet summer concerts at

Nikon at Jones Beach Theater to spread the word of the poor sewage treatment at the plant, likely helped turn the dialogue between the state and the activists. Effluent into the western bays The Jones Beach Sewage Treatment Plant outfall pipe was discharging into the Sloop Channel (the western bays), a subregion of the South Shore Estuary Reserve, extending from the western boundary of the Town of Hempstead to the Nassau/Suffolk County line. These embayments are an extensive area of shallow water and salt marsh islands connected by channels and tidal creeks. The bays contain the greatest concentration of salt marsh islands. They are home to many species of marine and bird life, including hard shell clams, flounder, snowy egrets and blue herons. The sewage treatment plant can process up to 44 million gallons of sewage a year, although during the winter months it processes virtually nothing. Studies are underway that are evaluating the water quality, fish populations and currents within these embayments. At a hearing held in summer 2011, scientists from Stony Brook University said their study indicated that there is too much discharge from sewage plants entering the waters. The discharge was not able to be flushed out properly to the ocean, as previously thought. A final hearing and report will be issued in November, concluded Mr. Weltner. – with Douglas Finlay

Calhoun Choir reunites at Curé He is described as inspiring and talented. The most common explanation for any strictness was that he “demanded excellence.” This man, S. Talbot Thayer, was the Calhoun Choir director for 25 years before retiring in 1985. On September 8, a Calhoun Choir Alumni Reunion and Celebration will be held to honor the teachings of Mr. Thayer. Charles Greco, Class of ’74 and local business owner of Select-A-Home, organized the event to be held at Curé of Ars in Merrick from 7:30-11:30 p.m. After many months of trying to assem-

ble a large group of people for the reunion through Facebook, Mr. Greco completed the plans “with a committee of none,” he said. Thayer, now 81 years old, is thrilled about the reunion. “I’m most excited to just sing the Calhoun songs and, of course, see all my former students.” A homecoming is long overdue for many of his pupils, as some have not seen him since their days in the hallways of Calhoun. – Leah Sobel

Governor signs Right to Know law New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Sewage Right to Know Act this month. The new law, which goes into effect May 1, 2013, requires that publicly run sewage treatment plants provide the public notice after raw or partially treated sewage spills into the water. The law will allow the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to sewage pollution. The law was co-sponsored by Senator Charles Fuschillo (R-Merrick), and Assemblymen Harvey Weisenberg (D-Long Beach) and Dave McDonough (R-Merrick). Merrick Life reported in July that the legislation had passed both chambers of the Legislature and was sent to the governor on the final day of the legislative session. Similar public notification laws exist in more than a dozen states including Connecticut, which passed a notification law earlier this year. New York’s Sewage Pollution Right to Know law will require public notification within four hours of a sewage discharge. Notification will happen via local news outlets and on the website of the state Department of Environmental Conservation. In addition, the DEC will produce a

statewide Sewage Discharge Report each year that will report annual discharges and remedial responses taken, said Adrienne Esposito, executive director of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment. “Sewage will no longer be out of sight and out of mind, but rather it will be in public discussion,” she said. For more than a year many local residents urged both the state and the county to support the passage of a sewage right to know act. Ms. Esposito said that “21,500 letters were sent to elected officials and 50,000 signatures were collected in support of the public’s right to know.” Nassau County passed a version of a right to know spill bill last October. It provides information about sewage spills to residents if they sign up for an email alert. “I applaud the signing of the Sewage Right to Know law,” said Assemblyman McDonough. “Long Island waterways are an integral part of our community and heritage, and I am pleased that we’ve taken another step to ensure their continued beauty.” New York is the only state with ocean, estuarine and Great Lakes coastlines. – Laura Schofer

Who are the eco-heroes? Sometimes technology brings overuse of natural resources. Our ancestors in countries such as Israel or Italy, where water was a limited resource, used roof cisterns to collect drinking water and dams to gather rain runoff for irrigation. Tourists are always amazed at how cleverly they met their needs. Today, here on Long Island, we draw on water tables deep beneath the ground water for both our drinking needs and for landscaping, cleaning and industry – all as if this resource was inexhaustible. What will we do if we run out of drinking water – turn to desalination? They say just as wars today are fought over oil, tomorrow’s wars will be over water. Enter the eco-heroes, companies such as Hilton that use water from runoff to water their lawns. As individual homeowners we can also do our part. The nation’s largest township, our own Town of Hempstead, under the leadership of Supervisor Kate Murray, is showing the way. Last week at its showcase Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick, the town kicked off its new Eco-Heroes program. Over 2,000 residents have already signed up to purchase either rain collection barrels or composting units from the town at half-price retail. The rain barrels are designed to integrate with standard gutters and leaders. The water collected is not drinkable but can be used to water gardens and lawns. A typical roof can provide hundreds of gallons of water, according to town experts. Collecting it for use saves homeowners money on their water bills and also helps prevent runoff into bays and waterways. Call 378-4210 to register to receive a barrel for $45. Composting helps reduce expenses for lawn and garden fertilizers and also helps reduce the garbage flow. The town can provide instructions on how to compost correctly and avoid odors. Again, the cost is $45. Call 378-4210 for more information. Parents who conserve water and recycle using compost are teaching their children an important lesson, giving them a tangible way to improve our community. They are eco-heroes too!

Are You Looking For A Friendly Atmosphere With Warm, Welcoming People?

FATHER, DAUGHTER: Jimmy Demos and Zoe welcome you to Merrick Avenue Diner.

7899OC1011ES

Family owned and newly renovated, the Merrick Avenue Diner is a place to relax, grab a bite to eat and surround yourself with a little bit of history. Built in 1947, this “silk city diner” is a rarity; only a few still exist in the entire county. Jimmy Demos, both owner and chef, acquired this piece of land in 2010. With his mother and daughter, Mr. Demos has recently refurbished the restaurant to make it the vintage showplace it is today. Before Mr. Demos turned it into the Merrick Avenue Diner, the establishment was named the MaryBill Diner. This Merrick staple was a place commuters went to get a quick coffee and breakfast. But, the small diner had many issues. The Merrick Avenue Diner went through a renovation, completely redoing the bathrooms, kitchen and grill. But it left other aspects, such as the décor and style, intact. The restaurant has Marilyn Monroe and other iconic figures on the walls, and the grill was moved to the back rather than remain in front at the counter. For Jerry Rafferty, a regular of the diner, the renovations were bittersweet. “Jimmy complied with the town and did a great job, but I liked it better when the grill was up front. I miss discussing and solving the world’s problems with him.” Mr. Rafferty prefers sitting at the counter when he comes to the diner because of its comradery. But for others, the grill moving to the back has been an improvement Patricia Towers, a former resident of Merrick, said “I used to come here all the time with my son when it was the MaryBill Diner, but we had to stop coming because

the smell from the grease was so bad.” Now, Ms. Towers said she could see the difference from the reconstruction immediately upon entering the diner. The Merrick Avenue Diner serves breakfast until 11 a.m. and lunch until 3 p.m. everyday. Newly added to the diner’s schedule, dinner will now be prepared until 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. With his busiest times being on Saturday and Sunday during breakfast, Mr. Demos is constantly cooking up the farmer’s omelet, chocolate chip pancakes, and Nutella French toast. For lunch, specialties include the grilled chicken pita press, the Philly cheese steak, and the Monte Cristo sandwich. Mr. Rafferty orders the farmers omelet almost every time he comes and it’s for good reason. The farmers omelet, complemented with hash browns, is lightly cooked and the fresh vegetables are delectable. As a lighter option, the Greek salad is topped with strips of tender grilled chicken and feta cheese. Ordering the savory chicken souvlaki would also be a good choice; the chicken is served in a light sauce topped with peppers, onions and a side of yogurt sauce. Dan Infantino and Annmarie Tuohy started going to the diner because they passed it all the time and now eat there at least once a week. “If I’m not getting a farmers omelet, I sometimes get pancakes,” said Mr. Infantino. What keeps them coming back to their favorite diner is the food and the atmosphere, which is “cute and quaint,” said Miss Tuohy. At first, Mr. Demos bought the diner because it is a collectible. “It’s an antique, like an old Chevy. Rebuilding it was like

girls were two of only 10 others from the United States invited over, and the youngest girls at the tryout. They held their own with a very talented group of older, athletic girls. After the tryout, the girls went back to their mom’s home town and spent the rest of their stay in Ireland with family. Anna, Molly, Niamh and Rebecca then flew back to New York. Niamh and Rebecca will be notified in a couple of weeks with tryout results. They had a great time, met some wonderful new friends from all over, and had an experience to remember for a lifetime. – submitted by the Woods family

Hall of Fame Recipient

Incoming Calhoun High School sophomores Niamh and Rebecca Woods have been playing soccer with the East Meadow Soccer Club since they were four years old. For the last five years, they have played for EMSC’s premier team, the Explosion. Niamh and Rebecca were in Pennsylvania at the FC Delco Soccer Tournament on Memorial Day weekend this year when their trainer, Chris Alosi, approached their dad, Garry, with an interesting proposition. Mr. Alosi had been contacted by Harry Kenny, who is in charge of the U17 women’s team of the FAI, the Football Association of Ireland. Garry was asked if he would be interested in letting the girls try out for the team in Dublin, Ireland. Garry’s and his wife Anna’s initial response was to say no. The request came as a surprise, and they weren’t even sure if the whole process was legitimate. After Chris Alosi, the EMSC Explosion trainer, made a few inquiries and phone calls, all was found to be genuine. After much discussion between Garry, Anna and the girls, the decision was made to give it a try. One of the main requirements to try out was to have a parent of Irish descent. Anna, who was born in County Laois, met that requirement. Anna, Niamh, Rebecca and their younger sister, Molly, flew over to Ireland last month. They stayed with their grandmother in Anna’s hometown of Portarlington, at which time Niamh and Rebecca were taken to Dublin to try out for the team. Niamh and Rebecca stayed in a hotel in Dublin city with the rest of the girls trying out. The tryout was very tough but fair, and lasted for two days. The

Women ‘whisper and shout’ over love by Danielle Sopchak In “Whispers and Shouts,” a new anthology of poetry by women of Long Island compiled and edited by Gail Goldstein and J R Turek, the poets bring together their poems and stay within the theme of love …all from the distinctive female perspective. In her preface, Ms. Goldstein says that “over 70 poets, ranging in age from preteen to octogenarian, from novice to poet laureate and published author, responded to the call for submissions.” The variety in ages and skill levels of the poets allows the compilation to tell an out-of-order life story, the book being arranged alphabetically and not by topic. The life story told makes the book a distinctive and interesting read. The differ-

ences allow young women to reveal the joys and the hectic life of a mother while allowing an older generation to remember their first love, heartbreak and the hardships of teenage years. The poems are a lovely way to learn, grow and understand the times and trials of other women. Nowhere in the book, while reading the poems, are there any descriptions to distinguish the poets from each other except for their names. They have no defining features that make one the poet laureate and one a 12-year-old girl who has just become interested in poetry, for example. In this anthology, these women beautifully tell life’s tales – together. The most compelling aspect of the compilation is not the overwhelming number of poets, their skill levels or even the story the

It’s the mutual understandings prompting hushed laughs and slight smiles and the repressed urge to scream, “I know exactly what you mean.” “We don’t show our strength/by lifting pallets of pipeline/hefting bags of concrete or bales/of peat moss – though we could…It’s not our wish to be oppressed or depressed/pushed around stomped on or spit on/not impossible for us to embrace our tenacity and our femininity – yes, we can.” – J R Turek. Raising funds for Nicola Tesla’s lab

Plot thickens The plot thickens when adding the urgency with which Mr. Elefante had hoped to produce the film. “With one-quarter of the proceeds we had hoped to keep Nicola Testa’s laboratory, Wardenclyffe, running in Shoreham.” At least $1 million is needed to help buy the land with the lab on it to make it a nonprofit museum and center for science. Making the movie last year would have provided the needed funds to guarantee the center would remain in the hands of science.

ACTOR Leo Rossi, left, with production super visor and Bellmore resident Vic Elefante. But Mr. Elefante told Merrick Life on Wednesday that – by using seed money of $33,333 earmarked for the film – a down payment was made on the land with the help of a third party to guarantee the land would not be sold to private concerns. Mr. Elefante became involved in the creative entertainment field – and subsequently became the production supervisor of “Fragments from Olympus” – after seeing Sikorski and Calomino’s off-Broadway play “Tower of Babble” in 2001, a play based on Mr. Tesla. Mr. Elefante approached Mr. Sikorski several years later to volunteer to work with Mr. Sikorski. Mr. Sikorski filmed a teaser of his award-winning play using the actor Leo Rossi (“Analyze This,” “The Accused”), and the trailer won the 2011 International Movie Trailer Festival. Mr. Sikorski’s screenplay for “Fragments

Mr. Elefante said that Mr. Tesla tore up a contract he had with George Westinghouse because he didn’t want the money, which saved Mr. Westinghouse from going bankrupt. Yet, Mr. Tesla is credited with helping in such monumental discoveries as the X-ray and wireless communications. “MRI technicians use a measurement called the Tesla whe operating the imagery,” he said. For information about how you can contribute to opening the Tesla Center in Shoreham, visit the website www.fragmentsofolympus.com, visit www.fragmentsofolympus.com/pages/vid_ind. html on YouTube, or visit them on Facebook.

Bellmore resident Victor Elefante has been on the verge of getting a film about inventor Nicola Tesla finished for several years now, But, like the subject he is chasing – who eluded fame in his lifetime – Mr. Elefante has been coming up just short. Mr. Elefante, a member of the Bellmore Lions Club, a volunteer and president of the Bellmore Fire Department’s West End Engine 3 – as well as member of BFD’s Board of Trustees – and winner of the Town of Hempstead’s Make A Difference Award, had a commitment of $4 million from an investor to make a big production film called “Fragments from Olympus – the Vision of Nicola Testa.” “We had a letter of commitment for $4 million to be able to make the movie,” Mr. Elefante told this newspaper. But the investor fell ill and the revenue is now far from certain. “We are looking for another major investor to produce the film,” he said. He said that had the investor not gotten ill, “we would have shot the film last year.”

of Olympus” was chosen winner of the International Long Island Film Festival’s (the Suffolk County version) Black Tie Screenwriting Competition. The film, however, is yet to be shot. Which is why Mr. Elefante is searching the corridors of fundraising in the hopes of snagging another investor who can help the film find its home – and reopen the lab as the Tesla Center for Science open for the purposes of true science. “Mr. Tesla,” said Mr. Elefante, “never received any monetary rewards for his inventions and discoveries.” He said that Mr. Tesla “just wasn’t into earning money with his inventions.”

Alyssa Klein of Merrick has been accepted to Teach For America’s 2012 teaching corps. Teach For America is the national corps of top recent college graduates and professionals who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools, and become lifelong leaders in the pursuit of educational opportunity for all students. Ms. Klein is a 2008 graduate of Calhoun High School and 2012 graduate of Binghamton University. She joins Teach For America’s 23rd incoming corps, which numbers a record 5,800, and will be teaching in Connecticut this fall. School supply drive helps students Astoria Federal Savings’ 13th annual Kids Tools for School collection drive will take place throughout August to help prepare children for the start of the new school year. The program provides local students whose families struggle to afford school supplies with the much-needed educational tools to excel and perform well in the classroom. Astoria Federal Savings will once again team up with local schools, shelters and human service organizations to distribute supplies to children in need. More families than ever are likely to find themselves in difficult financial situations this year — many for the first time — and may be unable to provide their children with school supplies, which typically cost as much as $100 per child. As a result, some children may arrive at school this September without supplies or are forced to recycle last year’s. “Each year we are impressed by the overwhelming community support for our

annual Tools for School program,” said Astoria Federal Savings Executive VicePresident Brian Edwards. “Children who go to school without school supplies are at a tremendous social and academic disadvantage, and it is important to make sure some of the lessfortunate students in our communities are able to start the year off on the right foot. We at Astoria Federal Savings are extremely proud to be a part of this community effort to level the playing field and help kids have a better experience in school this year.” The Kids Tools for School collection drive is part of Astoria Federal’s Education First initiative, which includes special savings accounts for students, an annual Teach Children to Save Essay Contest and school outreach programs to promote financial literacy.

Robert Kirchner

Joseph Thaler

Robert D. Kirchner, age 71, died on August 9, in Walnut Creek, California, after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Janet (March); father of Jennifer and Andrew; stepfather of Nadine March, Charlie (Diane) March and Adam March (deceased); and grandfather of Laura March. He was also the brother of Henry (Susan) Kirchner, Catherine (John) Bernich and Marian (Michael) Borenstein. Bob grew up in North Merrick, attended Mepham High School, served in the U.S. Air Force in New Zealand and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Cremation took place in California. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Joseph Thaler, 93, died peacefully at his home on Millwood Lane in Merrick, on Sunday, August 12. He was born in Manhattan on April 25, 1919, the eldest child of Fannie and Samuel Thaler. Joe graduated from City College of New York in 1940 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He married his wife Hilda in 1947 and began his career in sales as the coowner of Surf Paper Company in Queens. During their long and happy marriage, the couple lived briefly in Far Rockaway, Queens, before moving to Merrick in 1952, where they raised their four children. Hilda predeceased him in 2002. Joe was an active community volunteer in Merrick for over 50 years. He served on the Board of Directors of the Merrick-Bellmore Community Concert Association, and was a North Merrick Library trustee for many years. In addition to his civic affiliations, Joe continued to play community bridge until shortly before his death. Throughout his long life he loved attending or listening to the Metropolitan Opera, participating in political activities, reading and playing golf. His friends and family will always remember him as a caring, witty, intelligent man and loving father. He is survived by his son Paul and his wife, Linda Batchelor, of Florence, Massachusetts; his son Frederick and his wife, Alalia, of York, Maine; his son Donald and his wife, Sharon, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and his daughter Elizabeth Thaler-Barger and her husband, Peter Barger, of Norwell,

Jack J. Morelli Jack Morelli of North Merrick died on Wednesday, August 15, while in Florida. He was 90 years old. Mr. Morelli was the owner of JH Precision Metal in Plainview. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia K. Reilly, her husband Michael and daughter Katie. Mr. Morelli’s wife Katherine predeceased him. The family received visitors at N.F. Walker Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial is planned for 9:45 a.m. this morning, August 23, at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. ©©©

Henry Jonquiere

Henry Jonquiere Henry Jonquiere of Horatio Avenue died suddenly on August 11. He was 85 years old. Many years ago, he selected Merrick as a home for his family because he loved the tree-lined streets and beautiful school buildings. During the nearly 50 years he lived here, he never regretted his choice. He received a degree in social work from Adelphi University and was a member of the team that set up children’s protective services for Nassau County. Later, he worked in the forensic unit associated with the Family Court. He is survived by his wife, Harriet, his son Martin, daughter Renee Pinnelli and his grandson, Anthony M. Pinelli.
