Rainbows In M e

Program Description: Chasing Rainbows In Me is a puppet musical that follows the multicultural journey of Jaime, a young American girl, as she travels the world in search of the rainbow and the pot of gold. In each of the countries she visits -- (Mexico, China, Egypt, Ouagadougou from Burkina Faso, Japan, Russia, Italy, Spain, England and France) -- she greets different puppets in their language and then asks them if they have found the rainbow. While everyone she has met tells her that they have indeed found the rainbow, Jaime discovers that each puppet has a different concept of what the rainbow and the pot of gold means to them. This musical journey leads to Jamie’s newfound understanding of what gives her joy.

Program Details: The Troupe: Troupe of Chasing Rainbows in Me consists of a puppetier, a singer, a fluitist, a pianist and a child actor. Length of the Show: The musical lasts approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the site’s requirement and can include an interactive audience after show. Location: Performaces can fit into various venues including pre-schools, elementary schools, libraries, museums, community centers, camps and outdoor settings. The Cost: The fee will depend on the location of the site and the length of the show, and the number of persons performing. We can customize the show to fit within most budgets.

Standard 1 – Creating, Performing, and Participating in Music Children will sing, and dance to children’s songs from various countries as well as to original music written by Nadine Scharman and arranged by Ann Zalkind. The children will be able to repeat words and phrases in Spanish, Italian, Russian, African dialect, French, Hebrew and Arabic. Standard 2 – Knowing and Using Music Materials and Resources Students will recognize and repeat rhythm patterns and percussion instruments used in Ouagadougou, from Burkina Faso, Africa. The children will also be able to identify and associate the sound of the flute with Middle Eastern music, in particular music from Egypt.

Crystal instruments from Baschet Brothers in France are called Sonore (sound) Structures. These colorful instruments are made from crystals, strings, and metals. The instruments are unique because they create sounds of different vibrations than traditional instruments. They are played easily as percussive instruments and children of all ages respond to their healing properties. Children have an opportunity to play these special crystal instruments after select shows. We have performed workshops using only the Sonore Structures with great success. Children with diverse abilities have enjoyed the simplicity of interacting with the instrument while creating a complex sound. This offering is different from the show production and requires less setup and space. These elements can be brought to individual classrooms for instruction in small ratio settings as part of an all-day, partial day visit by musicians. Call or email for more information.

Standard 3 – Responding to and Analyzing Works of Music Students will respond to the different styles of music represented in the different cultures explored during the performance. Standard 4 – Understanding the Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of Music Students will make connections between the various genres and styles of music, and the cultures that are represented in the show.

Private party, children’s birthday & fundraiser performances available. Chasing Rainbows in Me book and CD with music and read-along available for purchase online or call/email to order.
