PC Richards Closes in on a Definitive Construction Date

P

.C. Richards’ uncertainty at rebuilding its flagship store on Sunrise Highway is nearly legend. In 2008 the company filed several application permits with the Town of Hempstead’s zoning Board of Appeals to rebuild its 24,000 square-foot facility into a two-story, nearly 40,000 square-foot building. It was granted time extensions on those applications, only to let them all lapse. It let them lapse even after resistance from neighbors in 2008 forced it to negotiate with them to purchase a home and keep it residential, agree to no egresses/ingresses into neighboring streets and to provide certain types of fencing. In 2010 Tom Pohmer, chief financial officer of the company, explained to a reporter still pursuing the story that it was the economy preventing P.C. Richards from rebuilding due to the “great recession,” even after securing the variances. However, Your NewsMag learned that on April 2 P.C. Richards again applied for – and was granted - an extension on a reapplication to secure building permits to rebuild its Sunrise Highway store. It will have one year once securing the permits to build. What may have caught the board’s interest in granting

the extension was inclusion of a timeline of early-to-mid 2015 when construction could actually begin. Tom Pantelis, P.C. Richard’s attorney, said that an extension was indeed granted until October to secure building permits – to try yet again. “Plans are to begin construction in the new year, beginning in 2015,” he told this magazine. While resisting comment at first, Pohmer finally told this magazine that “Yes, we will attempt to build a new P.C. Richards at that location.” He said the store would close, and patrons would have

to shop at other stores until the new store could be reopened. The old Buick dealership building next to it would be torn down and the space used as a new parking lot, because the new building would be built out to occupy current parking spaces in the front of the building. Former plans had included tearing down the Buick building and placing a large tent on it where patrons could purchase store merchandise while the original building was rebuilt. But, as Pohmer concluded, he resisted commenting is because “those plans could change at any moment.”

Car Dealer Questioned About Car Lot Full of SUVs

B

eautify – or face opposition. That appeared to be the stark choice given Sun Auto Group of Wantagh owner Patrick Cassino after he was peppered with questions by members of the South Bellmore Civic Association meeting at the Bellmore Memorial Library last month about the lot he leased on May 1 that is now full of SUVs on Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue. Precisely what he will do before a court date on June 24 to answer a summons from the Town of Hempstead for illegal use of the lot, is uncertain. “It looks disgusting”, Jerry Kleinman said of the lot filled with upward of 100 SUVs that have occupied the former East Bay Diner space, which was torn down in 2013. “This is a setback for those of us who are trying to beautify the community,” Kleinman told this magazine. The South Bellmore Civic Association’s charter includes working to beautify the Merrick Road corridor with new plantings as it seeks to fix and repair roads, fencing, landscaping and storefronts in the Bellmore community to present a more aesthetic appearance. “He came in the middle of the night and the lot is ugly,” Kleinman continued. He suggested a fence with green eco-friendly vines such as ivy that would cover up the vehicles in the lot. Kleinman didn’t react positively to a white PVC fence encircling the lot to hide the vehicles.

THE ONLY LOT AVAILABLE Cassino explained to the 16 or so attendees that he took over the lot because “I searched five miles in three directions and couldn’t find an empty lot anywhere else to

store the new vehicles.” He said he wanted to buy the lot, but it wasn’t for sale. “I’m paying $7500 a month for a two-year lease,” he said, “and that’s too much for not owning the land.” But attendees and Jason Phillips, an SBCA official, reminded Cassino that they would like to see a fence to frame the lot, and to reduce the eyesore of tens of SUVs parked there. Sensing the resolve of the community in addressing the aesthetic nature of the lot, he said he was given a summons by the Town of Hempstead because the lot is “not zoned for this use,” and asked if there was a way to “offset the cost” to the community until the court date. Larry Weinberger, a developer along Merrick Road, suggested he take part of his monthly $7500 rental and, along with the owner’s tacit approval, put a portion of the money for the rent back into beautifying the property instead. Cassino answered that because he had been issued a summons by the Town of Hempstead to appear in court June 24 to answer it, he really could do nothing before that date because he didn’t know what the outcome would be. At one point, Cassino said the lot was empty, full of dirt and was strewn with garbage,

and that he had cleaned up the lot by adding gravel to it to make it look more presentable. “As a resident I may not want a lot full of cars, but I also would not want a dirty, empty lot full of garbage.” When Weinberger then said he could have placed a restaurant in that space, if the lot’s owner would have agreed, Cassino asked if neighbors behind the lot would object to two restaurants side by side. He inferred that shrubbery and white PVC fences were not necessarily the answers to appeasing neighbors when placing a restaurant on Merrick Road. Eileen Cazassa, co-president of the Bellmore Preservation Group, told this magazine after the meeting, “The diner and Viva Loco were side by side for years,” and the group heard of no problems from neighbors. Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg also posed a question after the meeting, “By what right does he have to turn the lot into a parking lot for SUVs?” He believed that Cassino should be given a summons each day he is in violation of the code, and spoke to the issue of making sure the town enforces its own codes. “The town must enforce its codes to allow and encourage more diverse and upscale” businesses to flourish along Merrick Road, he concluded.

PetSmart To Build in Bellmore? P

reliminary work on parking lot lighting and new gas and water mains is progressing as PetSmart, Inc., a nationwide retailer of pet supplies, accessories and services, readies to reconstruct the former Rite-Aid store at the southwest corner of Merrick Road and Newbridge Road in Bellmore into a PetSmart store. A comment from a construction worker said the new work being performed on the building was for a PetSmart store coming in. Which lead to Town spokeswoman Susie Pokalsky telling Your NewsMag that the retailer applied for building permits in April to that specific location. And calls to PetSmart elicited this email response:

“Bellmore is an area we are currently looking at and we are hoping to join your community in the not too distant future.” Mike Silverman, owner Mutts & Butts of Merrick, which offers a range of pet accessories, supplies and provisions, told this magazine of PetSmart’s possible move literally down the street from them, “I’m not worried. People will go there and realize... we offer the best service, product and price.” The email concluded with a list of new store openings, and the remark, “If you don’t see the store you’re looking for, it may not be ready to open yet.” We’ll answer our own question with a … yes.

eniors from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will be graduating on Sunday, June 29, at the NYCB Bank Theatre at Westbury, 960 Brush Hollow Road in Westbury. This marks the third season the district has used NYCB Bank Theatre to facilitate graduation. he school year is coming to a close and graduating students are getting ready for their next chapter of life. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2014! Over the last nine months working to bring Your NewsMag to every home, I have had the privilege of going to a variety of school shows, concerts and award presentations. I am so impressed with the students. Each school has bright, talented and community minded students with educators that help guide the children along a positive path. There are many organizations that give to the community every day and provide even more on graduation, with scholarships and awards to hard-working dedicated students who stand out prominently to go the extra mile. A number of memorial scholarships even carry on the names of loved ones for the benefit of a student starting on their path. The number of awards and scholarships presented during Senior Award Night, for example, were overwhelming. This issue of Your NewsMag acknowledges the success of all graduating students by publishing their names in this issue. You will also find separate pages acknowledging Senior Award Night recipients, along with the organizations that provide awards and scholarships. Moving up from middle school to high school is an important milestone. Suddenly, the kids seem to grow bigger, stronger and more independent. If your child is moving up you will find their names in this issue too. Kids are not the only ones moving up. Calhoun Principal David Seinfeld is moving to a new position as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. Calhoun Assistant Principal Nicole Hollings will take his seat as the new Calhoun High School Principal. Meanwhile, Dana Bermas, current assistant principal at Chatterton, will be appointed the new Principal at Chatterton. Congratulations to all of you! As special note of best wishes to Cindy Davidowitz, retiring Principal of Chatterton, I can say first-hand as a parent of a child that went to Chatterton that your dedication to children and education has clearly made a difference.

utts & Butts – it’s catchy, it rhymes and pet owners say it's like an old friend’s name. But only by knowing the origins of this long-standing pet supply store can its quirky name and dedication to service be understood. In the early 60s, Al Silverman owned and operated a beverage store just west of the existing 9000 square-foot space that Mutts & Butts now occupies on Merrick Road. Successfully selling beer and soda to locals, Silverman quickly learned from his customers that cigarettes were a much-requested item. Unable by law to sell them in his establishment, he purchased the nearby gas station on the corner of Merrick Road and Hewlett Avenue and converted the property into a store specializing in cigarettes to meet the specific demand of his customers. Now with an eye for what people wanted, he then noticed there was no place in town except the supermarket to buy dog or cat food, so the decision was made to include pet food. It was the selling of that odd combination that gave rise to the name Mutts & Butts, which was born in 1976 to explain concisely what could be found inside.

IT ALL ADDS UP Silverman’s son and Mutts & Butts co-owner Mike Silverman, explains, “It was a weird combination, but when I graduated from college in 1977 the supermarket aisles were overflowing with pet food and there were no stores around like this. And for 34 years there was no competition.” Referring to the sudden appearance of superstores such as Target, B.J.’s, PetCo and WalMart, he adds, “Now we have everybody around.” But meeting the specialty needs of his customer base is what still drives the business and attracts pet owners both near and far. In addition to a well-run store, Mike said their loyalty extends beyond customer care to the heart of their business – animals.

Mutts & Butts is upgrading its facade into a more modern look “We’re very community-minded. We support a lot of local animal rescue and support groups such as Last Hope, All About Spay and Neuter, Bobby and the Strays, Kat Konnection, the Town of Hempstead’s animal shelter and the Humane Society.” Indeed, cats are often available for adoption at Mutts & Butts, with a gorgeous Bengal cat having found a new home and two new kittens coming in hoping to find one. Also known for prompt service, a staggering variety of items, price matching and accepting competitor’s coupons, the ability to special-order goods, an eye-dazzling fresh and salt water aquatic center, a wellkept reptile and small animal room and a reliable, expert staff - many who have been there 10- to 20-plus years, customers gush with praise. “Today’s customers are more aware and demanding,” says Mike. “They learn about things on the Internet, such as Origins dog food, that almost has a cult following. We’re prepared to recommend foods for dogs with special needs, like allergies.”

SPECIAL ORDERS ARE A LABOR OF LOVE That’s when Joe Ervolino, a 20-year employee and pet food expert, steps in. “We carry anything that anybody wants and we’re very good at special ordering and try our hardest to get what it is people request.” Merokian Willy Williams, who recently came in to replace a leaking aquarium [CONT. Home Owners Association on Hewlett Avenue, immediately north of Sunrise Highway. “I’ve been in the park before to help another Scout attain his Eagle Scout honors when he cleaned up the park,” said Benjamin. So for his Eagle Scout Project, he will put in 4’ x 4’ cement pilings into the ground and then build an 8’ x 10’ deck on top of the pilings. After that is completed, he will place park benches atop the deck so that people can sit under the trees and recreate at their leisure. He plans to plant ornamental vegetation in the park to provide a fresh look to the area. “I’m thinking of

perennials right now,” he said, such as shrubs. Benjamin said he has raised $850 through fundraising efforts, which have included letter writing and going door-to-door in his neighborhood. He adds that the fundraising effort is ongoing. When asked where he got plans for the deck, he said “online.” But he also will recruit the skill of his next door neighbor, a contractor, “Eric of EHI Home Improvement, who has provided tools, labor and professional expertise for my project.” Benjamin will look to Eric's help to guide the volunteers and oversee the project so that it is both a safe and

sturdy structure. He also wished to thank “Sorenson Lumber of Glen Cove, who’s generous donation of materials has made my project possible.” Said Fox : : We support him 100%. T

he 35th Annual Cultural Arts Luncheon was held at the Uniondale Marriott late last month. Amazingly, talented students from the five schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were chosen to perform musically or to showcase their artistic and photographic creations. Auditions had been held at each of the five schools, and the adjudicators -members of the Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation and several faculty members -- seriously considered each candidate’s performance and/or display. Those who were selected performed and/or exhibited, while the attendees – students, family members, friends, teachers and administrators – enjoyed the entertainment and a delicious luncheon. Handing the pipe to Paul Clark, Mutts & Butts leading aquatic expert for over 21 years, he expressed confidence in getting his problem resolved. At check-out, Nydia, a Mutts & Butts cashier for 14 years, most likely knew Percy by name, giving him a treat and the kind of attention only a true dog-lover can provide. For Sharon Abramson, finding two cooling pads for her Brussels Griffons to rest upon outside on hot summer days was quickly accomplished. Ervolino, who scans the floor for customers who seem to be in search of something, asks her what she needs. Coming from Dix Hills, Sharon said, “I find things here I can’t find anywhere else. They are very accommodating. When you go to a big pet store, who are you going to talk to there? When I come here, I get help. And I don’t think anything is ever missing.” Local cat-lover Gail said she’s been a loy-

Working from a desk in which her cat, Finn, is the computer’s screen saver, Carpenter says she does myriad of tasks at the store and beyond. “Kerry used to babysit for us,” says Mike, a father of three. a Retired Teacher at Graduation: How BMRTA Began FromYou Impacted Upon Us, Too The beginnings of the Bellmore-Merrick Unified Secondary Teachers Retired Teachers Association (BMRTA) were spelled out in an email explaining the whys and wherefores of creating a retiree association of former BMUST teachers. This letter was provided by Pat Christy, the first president of the retirees association.

“S

o here it is as I recall it … in the spring of 1984 Louie asked me what I thought about keeping the retirees involved in BMUST. He had heard that at the state level there was an interest, especially out of Levittown , of getting the retirees involved. He felt someone like Pat Christy would be perfect to represent BMUST as we looked into how to begin a chapter. Lou decided to have himself, myself and Pat go to dinner at McClusky’s in Bellmore, on Sunrise Highway and Bellmore Avenue. As I remember, the three of us met and discussed what Lou felt we should explore in beginning a retiree chapter of BMUST. Pat would do the ground work by getting in touch with locals that also were in the process of starting chapters, or had recently started one. I was to discuss with our lawyer Joe Rosenthal how to incorporate them into our constitution legally. It was decided to make it an amendment to the constitution. This would make it difficult to be removed from BMUST and so it was voted on by all members and passed.” “The Hammer” Rick

I

t is an honor to have been given the opportunity to add my voice to those marking the graduation of the Class of 2014. In thinking about what I wanted to say, I came across, and was inspired by, this statement by the late writer and activist, Maya Angelou: “You are the sum total of everything you’ve ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it’s all there. Everything influences each of us…” I believe there is an essential truth to these words – we do, in some way, large or small, known or unknown, have the potential to affect everyone we know or meet. It is true of students as well as of teachers. You, as students, have had a greater impact on your teachers than you may realize. I retired a year ago after nearly 40 years of teaching and union activism in Bellmore-Merrick, and in the ensuing year I have often reflected on the impact those years have had on who I am. Certainly, whatever I may have given to some of the students of the district over the years has been returned to me many times over. I am struck now, in thinking about Ms. Angelou’s words, by how much I have been influenced and molded by the people with whom I shared those years – my friends, my colleagues and of course my students. I would not presume to speak for all of your teachers, but I think they would agree that each year that passes, our students add another layer of experience, influence and memory that helps to mold the people that we are. I have often felt embarrassed and guilty when I have run into a former student, and could not for the life of me remember his or her name. (I have always been better at faces than at names, and for some reason my problem with names has increased as I have gotten older). I see the face, I have the

spark of recognition, but the name is gone. I can’t help feeling that my former student, who may have given me a big hello, must feel some sense of rejection due to my faulty memory. But I want that student to know that my lack of memory in no way means that he or she did not have some impact on me, my class or my teaching. Obviously, some have had a much greater influence than others, but that is also true of teachers. Not all teachers affect all students equally. We are all individuals, and we do not develop the same relationships with everyone. But every student had some connection at some moment in time – a conversation, a comment, an assignment that was done or not done, a smile, a dirty look – that became an aspect of our experience and our careers. In my case, maybe he wrote a paper that taught me something about himself, or the world - or me. Maybe she complimented me, or criticized me in such a way that made me think about myself as a teacher or a person. Maybe they just made me laugh, which is as great a gift as any. Your graduation, whether it is from middle school or from high school, marks a transition in your life. You will move on to whatever life brings you and whatever you make of it. It is easy to think that your teachers will merely say,

“Goodbye, have a good summer, have a good life,” and go about their business with the next group to come in September. And that is, to a large degree, true. Teachers live in the cycle of the academic year. The New Year starts in September, not January. Each September brings new classes, new names to learn and new people to try to know. But please understand that even as each new group comes in, you have left a mark. Your being there was important. It mattered. Our shared experience, even if it lasted for a brief moment, became part of what all of us are. That is no small thing. Again, Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Those feelings build upon themselves and each other. I don’t pretend that my students remember the details of the Treaty of Versailles or the results of the election of 1912, or even that they all remember me. But I do believe that each of your teachers, in their shared time with you, added something (for better or for worse) to how you felt and who you are. And just as importantly, each of you certainly added something to whom your teachers are. That is part of your legacy to your school, your district and your community. Your being here – all of you – has made a difference. As you move on, I wish you not only success and fulfillment in whatever you choose to do, but the experiences and relationships that will help create the complex and changing basis of who you are and who you become. I hope the world you are inheriting will bring you happiness, and that it will be a world of greater justice, safety and peace than the one that we have created. Merrick Chamber of Commerce Merchant of the Year

R

obert (Bob) Kliegler has been a resident of Merrick for over 50 years. He and his wife Laurie are very proud to be Merokians, and have raised two daughters here. They also have six grandchildren. He has owned Savall Drug Store since 1978, when he purchased the pharmacy from his aunt, after his uncle died. He has guided Savall Drugs to be customer-oriented and to treat patients as he would like to be treated, while keeping the old-fashioned friendly professional atmosphere. Savall Drugs is one of the oldest – if not the oldest – continuously family owned business in Merrick.

Klielgler is proud to have seen many of his customers’ children grow up and have children of their own, and still come to Savall for their health needs and speak to him. People come in or call him to ask health questions, and he takes as much time as necessary to help them, whether the question is pharmacy related or not. Savall Drugs offers free delivery, and Bob has even taken deliveries in snowstorms after work so that patients would have their prescribed medicines. He has trained staff to al-

ways cater to patients’ needs. Friendly conversations are always going on in the store between staff and customers. Savall Drugs has a large inventory so that the required medication is generally in stock. The pharmacy receives 17 shipments of medicine a week to keep its shelves constantly replenished. Kliegler has been on the board of the Long Island Pharmacists Society and several other pharmacy related businesses. And he certainly looks forward to serving his wonderful customers for many years to come.

S

teve Eplan, owner of The Rock Underground, a performance-based school of rock music, has been a lifelong resident of the Bellmore/Merrick area. As a student of its public school system, team member in its athletics programs, supporter of local fairs and charity events, coach for a local basketball team and a small business owner, Steve, his wife and three children have been solid contributors to the South Shore Community and Bellmore Village. As it began, Eplan owned the building at Bedford Avenue and Fredericks Street, where he ran his successful mortgage business “Perri Funding.” As he saw the village morph into a

more cohesive and interesting weave of restaurants, specialty shops and boutiques, his desire to pursue a passion for music - which he shared with his children and siblings, all musicians - culminated with the move of his long-term tenant “Exclusive Kitchens.” Having had experience with music school, being a student guitarist himself and, with the help of his two music partners, Paul Casanova and Billy Handy, Jr., in early 2010 he converted his hobby – and building - into a full blown school. He saw it as a logical step in the fulfillment of a vision for Bellmore Village, with its dance school, theaters and eateries. The concept was obvious. As Eplan says, “If you look at Bedford Avenue on a

weekend, weekday afternoon or summer night, kids, ‘tweens’ and young adults descend on this area and bring with them an energy that could be turned into a positive creative force for this district. The combined resources and enthusiasm of our next generations of students, families and consumers who patronize our small economy will have a positive economic impact on the Village’s small business owners.” Steve is pleased to have been a board member to the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores. He has been a highly motivated member, looking forward to organizing and sponsoring the music portion of the Bellmore Street Fair and, among other projects, working to make our streets safe through increased security technology.

rlene Gregory was just promoted to Director of Business Development and handles the relocation department at Century 21 American Homes. She is a partner in its Queens office and has been a Realtor for over 31 years. Gregory is a distinguished past president of the Merrick Kiwanis Club and an active board member. She has chaired

many projects and believes that it is important to give back to her community. She is also an active board member of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce and handles setting up the general and networking meetings throughout the year. She participates in many chamber events. She has helped make our chamber grow and involve as many merchants

and professionals as possible. Arlene is a 36-year Merrick resident and has two children who graduated from Calhoun. Michael does science research and manages a laboratory for New York University, while living in Brooklyn. Kelly, who lives in Cortland, New York, works in a Cortland bank, bartends and recently opened a Cortland boutique. Arlene Gregory works tirelessly for the Merrick community, where she loves the people, schools and businesses.

Merokian retires – to the acting life!

W

hen Cliff Dies (Dee-es) retired at age 65 after 48 years in the workforce, he swore he’d never take another job again - unless it was fun. He didn’t expect what happened next. One Saturday while reading the newspaper, an article about how seniors could land bit parts in movies and television shows caught his eye. “I thought, what the heck do I have to lose,” said Dies. Now he’s having the time of his life taking on the challenge as a background actor, landing an impressive list of small roles in star-studded shows, films and commercials. For the last three years, following his initial sign-up and profile at Central Casting in New York, Dies has been getting email “requests” almost daily for various parts. “At first I thought nothing would happen. I waited and waited. Then the phone rang and they asked if I was available for ‘Blue Bloods’ with Tom Selleck, one of my favorite shows. And that’s when it started.”

Presenting a photograph of himself as a mourner in a church scene from that first role, Dies explained that the job required him “to just sit there.” But some parts “just sitting there” have proven to be more challenging, including the time he was a fisherman on a dock in New York City while filming with Michael J. Fox for “The Good Wife.” It took several hours “freezing my butt off and I was edited out of the scene anyway,” said Dies. His easy-going demeanor and kind eyes have him typecast as “a good guy” in most shows. He has been a

doctor, juror, office worker, teacher, college professor, sailboat captain, passerby and patrons of bars and restaurants. He recently worked in a yet- unnamed film starring Richard Gere, the details of which he is unable to discuss. “We aren’t supposed to talk about films before they’re released. We also aren’t allowed to approach the main actors, unless they talk to us first…” But Dies says some top actors, like Gere, are “so nice” that they have approached him for conversation. “I enjoy the technicality of making shows, but I’m also a little star struck too.” No longer just a face in the crowd, Dies also lands “feature parts,” or solo, non-speaking roles in background scenes. Considered a step above background acting, he has appeared in movies such as “Wolves of Wall Street,” where he walked solo behind Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill as they engaged in conversation. His latest challenge had him responding to the main characters’ actions. In the pilot of “Ironsides”

he can be spotted at a restaurant table looking up from a newspaper as an argument between the two main actors becomes louder. Taking on speaking roles requires “pounding the pavement and going on auditions” says Dies, a demand he isn’t willing to assume. Never having formal acting training, Dies says he is a “reactor” rather than an actor. Now a member of the Screen Actors Guild – AFTRA, he says he enjoys their film viewing program followed by Q & A sessions, which are designed to give insight into acting techniques. Often attending with his wife, Nancy, invited attendees are given time to ask leading actors, such as Robert DiNiro, questions about facial expressions and other tricks of the trade. Being a union member has other benefits as well, including getting extra pay for inconveniences such as filming in inclement weather. “When it’s raining they call it wet pay,” says Dies. “If someone smokes in a scene, even though it’s just a simulated vapor, we get extra compensation.”

He credits Nancy for helping him get more work by providing him with professional head shots for Christmas. “That really made a big difference,” says Dies. “She’s very supportive and she gets a kick out of it too, especially when we watch a show like ‘Law and Order’ and I’m in it.” Having five movies, a Pepsi commercial and a list of television shows under his belt - including three episodes of “Law and Order,” two on “Blue Bloods,” “The Good Wife,” “Elementary,” the cable series “The Knick” and several pilot episodes including “Tin Man” and “Ironsides,” and films including “The Wolf of Wall Street.” “True Story” and “Still Alice,” Dies, now 70, is living proof that for seniors retirement isn’t necessarily the last act. Long Island International Film Expo at Bellmore Movies July 9-17

A

s the Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) starts lining up its celebrity slate for the 17th installment at the Bellmore Movies from July 9 – 17, they’ve added even more events to enrich the LIIFE film community that has been fostered over the years. “We’re showing 158 short and feature-length independent films this year from 32 countries and including 37 Long Island films,” states the festival director, Debra Markowitz. “We’re waiting on several responses from some great celebrity guests, but what we now have in place are even more informational and entertaining panels to go along with our wonderful film line up.” The opening night feature is “The Historian,” which stars William Sadler, John Cullum and Glynnis O’Connor. Festival premieres include “Cigarette Soup,” which filmed partially at Nickerson Beach and is produced by Larry Strong of Hempstead; and director Fred

Carpenter’s “Charlie Mantle,” which stars Robert Funaro, Armand Assante, Sean Young, Robert Clohessy and Jackie Martling, and was written and produced by Long Island’s Ed Wahl. LIIFE 2014 panels will include festival regulars, “The Write Stuff,” screenwriting panel, and the popular “Perils of Being an Independent Filmmaker” Breakfast Panel on Saturday, July 12, both moderated by Mitchell Bard of Snapper Films. Also back is the highly sought after “Film Financing and Distribution Panel” on Sunday, July 13, moderated by Marc Jacobson of Direction by Appointment and features a panel of industry experts. New to the lineup is a panel for actors on “How to Improv When the Unexpected Happens,” on Saturday, July 12. This will be taught by Katha Cato of the Queens World Film Festival. LIIFE has also added a “So You Want to Be an Actor Workshop” on Sunday, July 13, in response to the

numerous requests received about how to begin an acting career, and how to dig deep for challenging roles. Actor/Coach Joseph Halsey will be able to help people learn from his experiences in both television (“Law & Order: SVU,” “America’s Most Wanted,” “The Cosby Show”) and the independent film arena (“Maltese Murder Mystery,” “Dear J,” “Junkie Heaven,” “Leaving”). Except for the $5 charge for the filmmaker breakfast panel, all of the other panels are free. For local filmmakers only, LIIFE will present the NY Loves Film Roadshow to meet the team from the New York State Governor’s Office for Motion Picture and Televi-

sion Development for a roundtable discussion of all things productive, Re: producing in New York State – tax credits, location scouting, finding stages and crew, and more. LIIFE has a great lineup of films, incredible panels, parties, network-

ing opportunities and they anticipate some great celebrities gracing the stage at the awards ceremony and closing night party on Thursday, July 17. They are waiting on confirmations, but so far Lynne Cohen (“The Hunger Games,” “Damages,” “Law & Order,” “Sex in the City”) and William Sadler (“The Shawshank Redemption,” “Damages,” “Homeland”) are in. Something to wine about

WHAT IS VINTAGE?

Y

ou walk into a wine store and see your current favorite vino is five dollars more than when you purchased it last time. You might think, “Maybe this wine store just has higher prices, or maybe I bought it on sale last time...” There could be another factor involved that, unless the bottles are sitting next to each other, perhaps not even then that might have influenced the price jump—vintage. Most simply put, the vintage is the year the grapes in the wine were grown. This can affect a wine’s taste, quality and price. To see just how much of an effect it can have, you can check out Robert Parker’s Vintage guide at www.erobertparker.com/newsearch/vintagechart1.aspx. Certain grapes are much more sensitive to seasonal climate changes than others, like the thin-skinned Pinot Noir. These grapes can reflect more of a distinction vintage-to-vintage. There are two types of winemaking regarding vintage. One most popular in oldworld European and French winemaking is taking each grape as it comes, knowing it is a reflection of the land and the time it was harvested, and making the most of its unique characteristics. Think Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Both of these iconic beauties knew how to make the most of their unique assets. They also knew trying to dress one as the other would be a mistake. The other school of winemaking is consistency, not just in quality because, like Marilyn and Audrey, you can have two beautiful but distinctly different women or wines, but consistency in taste—think Robert Palmer’s 80s video, “Simply Irresistible,” where all the models look alike. This is more common in newer world winemaking. To make a purchasing choice you’re happy with you need to know what type of wines you like to buy. Are you open to trying

something that may be wonderful, but different than the wine you tasted previously? Or do you want the same taste as last time? And, if there is no date on the label? That means the wine could have grapes from different years blended into that particular wine. It is another method winemakers can use to have a nearly identical tasting wine from year to year. Comedian Joey Vega Talks About Love And Marriage on Bellmore Stage

C

omedian Joey Vega wishes to set the record straight regarding recent events over womens equality: “Women are not equal to men,” he asserted, “but … neither are men equal to women,” he finished the sentence in one breath. What’s behind this sort of thinking of a comedian-as-philosopher-of-the-common-man or even a court jester – jesters who would tinge the most stinging of everyday truths with a sense of humor for the kingly court? Find out as Vega brings his one-man comedy-play to the Bellmore Theater on Friday, July 18, at 8 p.m., where he will perform his original “50 Shades of Love, Sex and Marriage” and unveil what’s been on his mind the last 20 years or so of being in love, marriage, happiness, doubt, pain, misery and divorce. Perhaps we’ll even witness recovery from it all: “I would love to get married again … so I can give away another house.”

A comedian who cut his teeth at Gary Smith’s Brokerage Cabaret in Bellmore in the early 1980s, as well as at Chuckles and East Side Comedy Club, Vega has a lot more to say these days than can be told in a 45-minute comedy club set. Early in his career he even played the Rainy Night House in Queens, where he followed powerhouse comedians such as Andrew Dice Clay and Rosie O’Donnell. “In comedy clubs you get 45 minutes, sometimes less, to talk about things that are on your mind,” he told this magazine recently. “And you’re on the bill with other comedians,” he continued, so perhaps those in the audience don’t quite get to understand what it is you’re trying to communicate, trying to connect with. “They may not necessarily be coming to hear what you have to say.” “All comedians are philosophers,” he says at one point, ‘because we have a lot to say about everything.” Well said, Mr. Vega.

over three years. “My son took hold of me one day and told me to just do it,” he remembers. He said his son even produced his first shows until … “Chris Rock chose my son to be his assistant.” Vega, who has opened for rock-pop star Marc Anthony’s present tour and has opened for Jennifer Lopez as well, said he has known Chris Rock for “a long time.” “I used to write material for him,” he said. He said of his “50 Shades of Love, Sex and Marriage,” it is always a work in progress because he is constantly developing new perspectives on relationships even while performing on stage. And a character performance on stage it is. He has also acted in front of the camera … with Tom Hanks and Sally Fields. “I had a small part in ‘Punch Line,’ and for about three weeks, in between takes or during off times, I would sit with Tom in his trailer and we would talk a lot,” he said.

In marriage both people are not totally happy all the time, he said in discussing his new material for “50 Shades of Love, Sex and Marriage.” “We all have to accept certain circumstances” in these arrangements, he said, “we are two different animals who must co-habitate.” One of the secrets, he confided with this magazine, is that there is the dynamic of the dominant and the subservient, which changes frequently in the relationship, according to the circumstance. While playing the philosopher, he also plays the role of jester to perfection, imparting his philosophy with a delightful humor in a way we can accept it, relate to it and recognize it as us: his experience, he suggests, is our lot in life too, but we can handle it because we are all in it – together. He began his comedy-play journey in 2012 after talking about it for
