In 1820 Rudolph Ackermann’s shop on the Strand began the mass importation of the first Berlin woolwork designs to the UK. Named after their place of origin, the bright colours of Berlin Wools were made possible by significant advances in dyeing in the 1830s. In 2010, Elizabeth Bradley held a competition inviting art students from universities around the country to create a design for needlepoint inspired by interior trends. The very talented Claire Smail won the competition whilst studying at Swansea University in the UK. Expert Needlework Tutorage We introduced our needlework classes in 2009 and they have proved to be very successful. The feedback received from past participants is that the classes are both enjoyable and educational. Expert tutorage will allow you, regardless of your ability, to pick up new skills and techniques to get the most out of your interest in needlework. Participants enjoy meeting other like-minded stitchers and chatting over what they have enjoyed working on in the past and what they would like to embark on in the future. We have had the pleasure of meeting customers who have travelled from all over the UK and some who have made the journey from Europe and the United States to join our General Ability or Master Carpet Joining class. We hold these day classes in Oxford in a lovely hotel where the hospitality is key and accommodation needs can be easily met.
