Jordan
DAVIS
“Food is the universal language of the world.”
D
avis is the Director of Operations for the Chocolate Moose, a Bloomington ice cream institution that’s been operating under that name since 1983. Jordan has worked in the culinary world for two decades including jobs at Yogi’s, Sweet Grass, and other popular Bloomington restaurants. Jordan is the creator and host of No Dishes, a culinary podcast and co-founder of Bloomington’s popular Food Truck Friday. We spoke to him about Bloomington area restaurants and more below.
Ice
CREAM! For over 90 years The Chocolate Moose has been serving up a wide variety of locally-made, 14% butterfat ice cream including seasonal flavors like Banana Puddin’ with Nilla Wafers, Maple Glazed Donut, and Peach Cobbler, all best served in a homemade waffle cone. Ceremonial Green Tea, Salted Caramel, and Chocolate Sweet Italian Basil are crowd favorites at Hartzell’s, showcasing their creative, homemade ice cream offerings using authentic ingredients, on the edge of the Indiana University campus. We may be in Indiana, but the favorite at Scoops on the South side is their Michigan Pot Hole, chocolate ice cream with thick fudge and chunks of dark chocolate that will have you going back for a second cone immediately after finishing your first. Stop by Bruster’s on your way out to the lake and try their Strawberry Shortcake Sundae in the summer, or fall in love with their Apple Dumpling with Cinnamon ice cream as the leaves begin to turn. An old school, walk-up ice cream stand with a drive-thru, Jiffy Treet is always the place to be on a Friday night in Ellettsville, as people wait patiently for their chance to order unique, rotating soft serve flavors such as Cereal Milk, Cheesecake, and Candy Corn.

STREET
Nestled just east of IU’s campus lies 4th Street, known by locals as “International Row,” where a variety of international restaurants serve authentic cuisine that isn’t found too often in the Midwest. With nearly a dozen eateries within walking distance from each other, 4th Street offers something for everyone to enjoy along with plenty of opportunities to try something new.
SIAM HOUSE
INDIA GARDEN
Authentic Thai cuisine specializing in an array of fried rice & noodle entrees. Thai-style curry and soups are also very popular. Favorite items include drunken noodles, pineapple fried rice, and sizzling Thai ribs.
Serving popular Indian fare like chicken vindaloo, vegetable samosas, and saag paneer. They also offer seafood, lamb, chicken and tandoori specials to customers. Nearly 100 authentic Indian dishes are on their menu.
ANYETSANG’S LITTLE TIBET
KIMU ASIAN FUSION
Bloomington’s only Tibetan restaurant offers a variety of steamed and pan-fried dumplings. Other authentic dishes include kham amdo thugba (a hearty stew made with vegetables and noodles) and temo sha tsel (a garlic sauce stir fry). Thai and Indian specialty dishes can also be found here.
Offering traditional Burmese dishes and other Pan-Asian plates. Specialties include Kye Oo (pork broth with egg and noodles), Bakuteh (pork belly with mushrooms), and Burmese-style curry. Wash it all down with an authentic Falooda!
BTOWN GYROS
DAT’S CAJUN RESTAURANT
4th Street’s Greek restaurant specializing in falafel, baba ghanoush, spanakopita and, of course, lamb gyros. If you save room, be sure to try a slice of baklava before you leave.
Get your taste of The Big Easy in Bloomington! Classic Cajun and Creole dishes like jambalaya, crawfish etouffee, and gumbo are served up daily. Spicy food fanatics will want to try the Datwich or Voodoowich.
MY THAI
KOREA RESTAURANT
A great selection of Thai flavor! The spring rolls, drunken man fried rice, and curry offerings are always a hit. Ask for the chicken with pineapple for a real photo-worthy culinary experience.
Large portions and authentic cuisine! Each meal comes with “banchan,” which includes potatoes, kimchi, broccoli, fish noodles, and more. Kimbap (sushi rolls), beef bulgogi, and ramen is always a popular choice among patrons.
DO ASIAN FUSION Primarily serving Korean food, this place also infuses elements of other Asian cuisines into their dishes. The Korean fried chicken is their staple dish. Their hot pots, fried rice entrees and noodle dishes are also well-received.
TASTE OF INDIA One of Bloomington’s favorite Indian restaurants! This is the only establishment to offer both Northern and Southern Indian fare. Their buffet, which changes constantly, will offer traditional items like butter chicken, tikka masala, naan bread, and chana masala so come with a big appetite!

TIME!
olf experienced a resurgence in the Bloomington area during the pandemic and shows no signs of slowing down. A big reason for that is The Pfau Course at Indiana University. The Pfau is ranked as one of the top 100 courses to play in North America as well as one of the best value courses in the United States. Dan Hilker, Director of Golf at the Pfau and a professional golfer for more than 35 years said “Bloomington’s reputation as a golf destination is growing. The Pfau Course at Indiana University is one of the ten best public golf courses in the country. It’s very affordable for both its quality and the challenges of the course. But the Bloomington golf scene has courses for all experience levels, so the courses aren’t really competitive, in a good way. In this town, everyone can play.”
In addition to the Pfau, Bloomington has three other distinctively different public golf courses!

Herman B
WELLS
Inside Sample Gates, Old Crescent area near the Rose Well House (2000)
Herman B Wells served as Indiana University’s president from 1937 to 1962. Indiana-born and an IU graduate himself, Wells was also the second-longest running president in university history. Through his leadership, IU transformed into a ‘cosmopolitan center’ for international learning (Capshew). While he had a surplus of accomplishments, an early triumph of the Wells administration was the implementation of Thomas Hart Benton’s Indiana Murals that are placed in the IU Auditorium and Woodburn Hall. During the 1940’s, President Wells and IU athlete George Taliaferro played a pivotal role in desegregating the IU campus and the City of Bloomington. Students often rub the thumb of the statue for good luck! It’s a tradition that many students partake in, which is why his thumb is a goldish color compared to the rest of the statue.

Ostrom
1100 E. 7th Street, behind Woodburn Hall, now known as Ostrom Commons (2020) Elinor Ostrom’s career was filled with a number of firsts — most notably the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Her statue also marks the first sculpture of a woman on campus. Ostrom was the Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences and a professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Her work challenged common economic assumptions by disproving the “tragedy of the commons,” which states that humans will overuse any asset that is available freely. Her work suggested that government regulation was not necessarily needed to protect public resources. She showed that small communities around the world were capable of developing collective, self-governing institutions that would prevent over-exploitation of communal resources.

George Taliaferro was one of the most important and influential individuals in the history of Indiana University and IU Athletics. Taliaferro was a three-time All-American at IU who led the Hoosiers’ unbeaten 1945 Big Ten Championship team in rushing. He later became the first African-American drafted by an NFL team when the Chicago Bears selected him in the 13th round. Taliaferro was integral in the desegregation of Indiana University.
“Spirit of Indiana,” sits atop a circular base and features five young student-athletes coming together in a huddle before taking the field of competition signifying the concept of team over self. “The Spirit of Indiana” was first introduced as IU’s theme in 1925 before evolving into “The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, One Team” in 2010.
A former student and Pulitzer-prize-winning reporter Ernie Pyle was one of the first embedded journalists of his time. This statue depicts Pyle sitting on top of a wooden munitions crate dressed in his combat fatigues, as he contemplates how to communicate the life of the common World War II soldier to the world. He spent most of his time alongside troops, getting a first-hand experience of lives at war. His writings became so popular that his columns were published in over 400 daily newspapers worldwide during the height of the war.

Dr. Alfred C. Kinsey 150 S. Woodlawn Ave. - east of Lindley Hall (2022)
A biologist and zoologist by training, Kinsey spent most of his career conducting transformative studies and research on human sexuality. He joined the IU faculty in 1920, becoming a recognized authority on the taxonomy of gall wasps. His findings on human sexuality provoked an international conversation. He later founded The Kinsey Institute in 1947 and is the world’s leading sexuality research institute. Kinsey and his co-workers published “Sexual Behavior in the Human Male” in 1948 and “Sexual Behavior in the Human Female” in 1953.

Carmichael
1213 E. 7th St., northeast side of the IU Auditorium, along Eagleson Ave. (2008)
Howard “Hoagy” Carmichael was born in Bloomington in 1899 and earned both his bachelor’s degree (1925) and his law degree (1926) from Indiana University. As a student, he began to compose songs and perform regularly with Carmichael’s Collegians, his first band. After law school, he worked briefly as a law clerk before pursuing a music career, writing many of the songs that have become American jazz standards, including “Georgia on My Mind,” and “Stardust”. Carmichael won the 1952 Oscar for the song “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening”. After his death in 1981, his family donated his archives and many personal belongings to IU, and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomington. As you stroll by his sculpture it is common to see flowers in his hand left by admirers. V I S I T B LO O M I N GTO N .CO M

Here are some amazing museums that you can only experience right here in Bloomington!
Eskenazi Museum of Art
Wylie House
Designed by I.M. Pei, the architect behind the Louvre Pyramid in Paris, France and the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Over 45,000 objects are available to observe, including ancient Greek pottery, Renaissance panels, and works of art by Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Claude Monet.
Home to IU’s first president, Andrew Wylie, this 1835 structure is one of Bloomington’s oldest homes and is outfitted as it might have looked during that time period. Collections in the house include family artifacts and photos that document the early history of Indiana University and Bloomington. The historic house also has an heirloom garden on its grounds, which is now part of a seed-saving program that provides valuable historic interpretations on generational gardening in the area.
Lilly Library An internationally-revered rare book and manuscript library. Notable items include the first printed edition of “The Canterbury Tales,” a New Testament of the Gutenberg Bible, the First Folio of William Shakespeare’s works, George Washington’s letter accepting the presidency of the United States and Thomas Jefferson’s personal copy of the Declaration of Independence.
Monroe County History Center Located in a historical building that used to serve as an elementary school for African American Children in the late 1800’s-early 1900’s, and a Carnegie Library, the Monroe County History Center strives to collect, interpret, and present the genealogy, history, and artifacts of Monroe County in order to best depict the heritage & culture of the community. Learn about the history of the local limestone industry, transportation, local sports & athletes, and more. They also feature rotating exhibits throughout the year.
WonderLab Museum Providing children with opportunities to learn about all things science-related through interactive exhibits and programs. Exhibits include an outdoor WonderGarden that showcases solar power & the science of sound, a gallery of live insects, amphibians, and reptiles in settings that mimic their natural habitats, an augmented-reality sandbox that teaches kids about different climates & biomes, and even more.
Arts & Culture
FROM art and history to science and technology, Bloomington offers a museum experience for everyone to enjoy! It’s ideal fun for those who find joy in learning and observing or getting involved with hands-on educational activities.
Farmer House Museum Mary Ellen and Ed Farmer left their historic 1869 residence and its contents to the Bloomington community in 1999, to be used to promote historic preservation and cultural memory. The collection is varied and unique, with items from the nineteenth & twentieth centuries including clothing, family photographs, school memorabilia, letters, household items, pottery, and furniture. There’s a special focus on the years 1930-1950, a time of coming-of-age for the Farmers and for the country as a whole.
Hinkle-Garton Farmstead The property spans over 11 acres, with two homes, four farm outbuildings, and extensive grounds. The landscape is also an important historical resource, as are household and farming artifacts & materials representing three generations of the Hinkle and Garton families. The farmstead serves as an educational resource, hosting special events, exhibits, and programs throughout the year. It also usually has a museum open day on the last Saturday of each month.

LOCAL ARTISTS T
here are truly too many favorites to choose from, but a few local musicians I’ve been especially enjoying lately include Mini Machine, a young band in town that I love showcasing fresh songwriting, smooth harmonies and vocals, and a driving beat. You will find yourself smiling and bopping your head when they play. Yuki Kawana is not new to music, but is relatively new to playing shows around Bloomington. Originally from Japan, she now lives here and just finished an amazing album made at local studio, Russian Recording. Grunge power pop, catchy hooks, and a beautiful voice make her songs shine. Erin Tobey is my bandmate in our band Brenda’s Friend and is also a talented solo songwriter. She rocks on guitar, bass, and drums, writes original and powerful melodies and lyrics, is a dynamic performer, and has the voice to carry it all. @erintobey Busman’s Holiday are Bloomington icons. Their original tunes, gorgeous harmonies, charismatic performance skills, A+ banter, and show vibes always delight audience members! @busmansholiday
A FUN LIVE MUSIC DATE NIGHT Check out Small Favors for dinner. Small Favors is a thoughtful farm-to-table restaurant, and their food is incredible. They have a great selection of drinks and I especially love their mocktails. After dinner, head over to The Blockhouse Bar. If you’re in the mood to perform, you could go to their weekly Tuesday Open Mic night, and then stick around for Honky Tonk night, where a rotating crew of local musicians play country covers. They also have a jazz night called Call and Response every Wednesday that I would recommend checking out.
I like going to an early all ages show at the Orbit Room, a venue for both local and traveling musicians. This listening room serves some of the best hot dogs you could try with creative vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. They also have a pinball room!
Then later head over to The Bishop, a longstanding and intimate venue with well curated shows from nationally touring and up and coming artists usually brought to town through Spirit of 68 promotions (spiritof68promotions.com). The Bishop also hosts unique events like the Bloomington Poetry Slam, a monthly open mic and poetry reading centered on community connection.
Don’t Miss These “Under The Radar” Venues: The Fell is a collective art gallery/studio space regularly hosting accessible all ages shows and Roses Midwest is a DIY gallery/venue creating space for musical, artistic and community building gatherings.

Limestone Comedy Festival
at Alano-Martin (@matalanomartin) is a nationally touring professional comedian who makes his home in M Bloomington, Indiana. He created the Limestone Comedy Festival (limestonefest.com) with Jared Thompson in 2013 with the duo bringing in comedian Dwight Simmons (@dwightsimmons) as co-director in 2020. This popular, three-day, multi-venue event celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2023 and has grown into one of the country’s most renowned comedy festivals. Limestone #11 takes place May 30 - June 1, 2024.
Jared and Mat credit the Comedy Attic for building an outstanding reputation with
local and visiting fans and nationally within the comedy industry that supports the Limestone Comedy Festival and creates a lively comedy scene in Bloomington. The Bloomington comedy scene has produced nationally touring comedians such as Tom Thakkar and Emil Wakim, who have gone on to perform on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and Comedy Central. Bloomington comedy is strengthened by a mix of scene veterans such as Jon Hancuff (@jonhancuff), Emily Davis (@lilemdavis), Jonas Schrodt (@jonasschrodt), Mark Bookwalter (markbookwaltercomedy.com), and Shanda Sung (@shanda.sung) along with new up-and-coming comedians including Joey Cerone (@joeycrronecomedy), Muhammad Saahir (@muhammad_saahir_), and Erin Depke (@erindepke).

Comedy Attic J
ared Thompson opened the Comedy Attic (comedyattic.com) in downtown Bloomington in 2008. Fifteen years later, the Comedy Attic is regarded as one of America’s best live comedy clubs. Amy Schumer, John Mulaney, Paul Reiser, Janeane Garofalo, Arsenio Hall, Brian Regan, Ali Wong, Kumail Nanjiani, and so many others have performed there over the years. Live comedy is available weekly at the Comedy Attic on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. In the early days, Jared scoured the Internet for videos of comedians he wanted to host at the Comedy Attic. In 2009, he booked Tig Notaro and after her performance, she signed to local Bloomington record label, Secretly Canadian, who was at the show. Tig went on to record her debut album in Bloomington, held her album release party at the Comedy Attic, and continues to perform in Bloomington when touring. Shanda
SUNG
S
“The Comedy Attic is the pinnacle.”
handa Sung has been a professional stand-up comedian in Bloomington for eight years now and her first comedy special, Pickles, comes out in 2024. Shanda thinks Bloomington’s comedy scene is unique because it is home to one of the best comedy clubs in the country while maintaining an intimate and safe environment. She is excited about regular comedy showcases happening now at smaller venues as well like the Orbit Room and Hoppy Wobbles. In efforts to keep comedy diverse, not only at The Comedy Attic but in the comedy scene overall, Shanda teaches a beginners stand-up workshop for women at The Comedy Attic.
Where to Go Before and After the Show: Mat For the best Limestone Comedy Festival experience, stay at a downtown Bloomington hotel to easily be able to enjoy the local restaurants. You eat Mother Bear’s pizza and are happy. You drink a Bloomington Brewing Company beer or Cardinal Spirits cocktail, if that’s your sort of thing, and get happier. The next morning you start your day with Hopscotch Coffee, and it puts the muscle in your hustle to get back out there and do it all over.
Shanda After a Comedy Attic show, go for a beer at The Bishop and tacos from Pili’s Party Taco Truck.

MCCLARY
anessa McClary has been a V dedicated leader of the Kiwanis
organization for more than 20 years. She is the founder of the Kiwanis Indiana Balloon Fest that takes place each fall.
“The Kiwanis Indiana Balloon Fest is unforgettable. The event offers indoor and outdoor activities and entertainment for all ages, including hot air balloon viewing, Spooktacular trick-or-treating, skydivers, bands, fireworks, food, wood carving, retail vendors, and more!”
Why is the Kiwanis Indiana Balloon Fest important?
Favorite thing about the balloon fest:
It raises funds for the South-Central Indiana Kiwanis Club that supports several area youth initiatives. We were proud to help kick off a recent community service effort of providing beds for kids because every child deserves a place to sleep at night. We contribute to the Bring Up Grades (BUG) program at Templeton Elementary School, youth mental health services at Riley Children’s Hospital, and Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs that help people with disabilities.
The shaped hot air balloons. The haunted mansion balloon that came from Oklahoma was a recent favorite. We also had a cool UFO-shaped balloon that fit in well with the Spooktacular theme. The 2023 event brought in pilots from nine different states. Some favorite shaped balloons over the years have been Darth Vader, Yoda, Tweety Bird, Sylvester, and Smokey the Bear.
Other Visitor Must-Do’s: • • •
