Threads Boutique Hotel

Inspired by the University of Akron’s research on biomimicry and properties of spider webs, the design of Threads Hotel Collaborative in Akron, Ohio draws from both the local history of Akron’s past and the design industry’s developing innovations of the future. As international biomedical technologies expand within the city and as medical and laboratory technicians increase to twice the national average, this building, once Akron Pure Milk Company, serves as a central hub of advancement both regionally and globally to accommodate recovering heart patients and their traveling physicians. An emerging sustainable world is incorporated in Threads, using biomimicry to seek solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies.

Aveda Salon and Spa

Breezy is the concept behind the design of the Aveda Salon and Spa. It is designed from the idea of a clean, fresh and relaxing atmosphere. The concept was achieved through the natural flow throughout the space, materiality and color palette.

The colors I chose from Sherwin Williams have a reflection on the overall concept. The Aquatint is a reflection of water, a natural cleansing color integrated into the concept of breezy. Glisten Yellow is a color of purity and it allows clarity of thoughts. The semi-transparent Brazinut strain for the fooring is a color of contrast and resembles the natural life of wood.

Point. Plane. Line.

Point. Plane. Line. is a three-dimensional transition from a two-dimensional shading composition. The project enhances the principles of design and the understanding of form versus space.

The process sketches, right, describe the process I under went to arrive at the final design. The final interpretation is formed as a 3D space within a 2D compostition, to show experiences within different spaces in the final design. The final model was constructed of museum board and bass wood.

The cube is the understanding of primary, secondary and teritary space. The use of solid, semi-solid and void is used to identify the different spaces to form relationships and experiences

Axon Drawing The design is comprised of three volumes. All three of the volumes interpenetrate within eachother. The 3D composition shows the relationships, articulation and adjacencies between spaces. There are three types of spaces within the cube; solid, semi-solid and void. The overall design is 6”x6”x6”.

REI Retail Store

Rei is a retail store that has a strong focus on sustainability and the environment. As a company they focus on nature and work with the community to help restore our environment. But, what if there was a material stronger than steel from our environment, if not stronger.. a perennial evergreen plant that belongs in the grass family. Continuously growing horizontal underground stem that puts out lateral shoots and adventeruos roots at intervals, rhimzones. Primary function of anchoring to the ground, roots. Hallow stem of grass with different shapes, size and color, culms. Fanning out, stabilizing, branches. Wave, twisted, curled and veiny, leaves. Seed bearing, blooming and beautiful, flowers.

The diagram to the right shows the understanding of the structural components of a bamboo plant and furthur explains how the anatomy and function of the plant is incorportated into the structure of the REI building.

Leaves

Culms Branches

Rhimzones collect and store primary nutirents for growth of the plant and this is what gives the plant the existence of Rapid Growth Roots are the primary function of the plant that anchor the culm to the ground which allows the culms to hold more weight Culms are a distingushable vertical feature that vary in shape, size and color Branches are ranged from the bud to the node of each culm Leaves are what protect the bamboo plant it provides a photosynthetic function of the plant by converting sunlight into energy

Roots

Rhizomes

Diagram Structure Diagram

Each function is diagramed into the structural components of the building. Rhizomes are explored through the flloring for mechanical and electrial functions. Roots are explored through the flooring; Culms are distingushed in the colums for structural support and the leaves are protected through the ceiling component of the building.

Product Design

Cubism is influenced by three-dimensional forms. It was considered the most influential art movement in the 20th century. Using an object that we use everyday and influencing the geometric forms to emphasize its natural form to a multitude of viewpoints is the construction of the Shattered Furnishings Line.

Emergency Shelter

Through the research of a natural disaster, I designed an emergency shelter for those who have been wounded, gotten sick, or need medical assistance. This shelter is a propsition for the future. The design is in an existing building in New Orleans that would be prepared before the natural disaster would occur.

The floor plan, left, is an existing building in New Orleans, I have designed the space to accomodate those who have been distraught and wounded by a hurricane. Patients can come here to seek treatment and therapy.

The materiality in the spaces, right, are easy clean, durable and biodegradable. The space is to help people feel comfortable to feel like they are away from the distater outside of the building. A children play area is in place in the entry, to allow children to feel like they are back home and and comfortable.

Botanical Garden

While designing this project, I wanted to create the effect of illusion. Illusions are a distortion of the senses, revealing how the brain normally organizes and interprets sensory stimulation. Kent State University needs some interest on a particular site, the surroundings of the site are in geometric form and creating an illusion on the site will create a focal point of interest. That being said, an illusion of the structure will be satisfying to the site.

08

Perspective Perspective The experience that a person has from each part of the building is a sense that they are on one level, but they are actually on a different one. This is the illusion aspecit of the space that I wanted to succeed in this structural design.

Sketch Model South View Exterior The forms of the structure have a relationship with the levsls of the site. The way that I accomplished this challenge was by designing an extr sion of a material doing through another one, with the illusion of two pieces being one.
