LONG ACRES RANCH VISITOR CENTER RICHMOND, TEXAS PARTNER: BROOKS VAN ESSEN Long Acres Ranch, a once traditional cattle ranch, is in the process of rebranding itself and transforming into an ecotourism attraction for the city of Houston and the surrounding towns. Rather than serving as a standard inward-facing building, the complex becomes a portal to nature. The design focuses on horizontality, extending out into the prairie. The one-story footprint has a broken up form, in order to feel less imposing on its natural surroundings. Each of the ten linear pavilions has large open-air walkways, and many have the option of being completely exposed to the outdoors through large sliding glass walls. The program is divided into a hierarchy of spaces, one public and one private, which surround two central courtyards to encourage outdoor interaction. The groups of buildings are oriented along two main axes according to natural ventilation and North/South light.

LOCATION Richmond, located approximately 25 miles southwest of downtown Houston, is one of the many towns that surround the sprawling metropolitan area. Nestled along the Brazos River, Long Acres Ranch will provide the citizens of greater Houston with a convenient escape from fast-paced city life. The extents of the site are determined by the Brazos River, and suburban developments do not detract from the immersive natural experience.

THE URBAN EDGE BRYAN, TEXAS PARTNER: MEGAN ZHANG Downtown Bryan, the social, cultural, and economic center of the Brazos Valley, has faced multiple phases of redevelopment since its founding. Bowie Elementary School, an early 20th century structure located on the outskirts of downtown Bryan, has remained vacated and purposeless since the early 1990s. If strategically designed, this substantial property could potentially become a catalyst for ensuing redevelopment in the area. This adaptive reuse project entails many components that would transform a currently unusable space into a socially vibrant and widely functional mixed-use facility. The existing school will be transformed into a shared office building, and the extensive site will house a shipping container apartment complex.

LOCATION The city of Bryan, located in close proximity to College Station and Texas A&M University, is rich with history. Bowie Elementary is located on the outskirts of urban downtown Bryan on West 26th Street, immediately in front of the railroad tracks. This project will transform West 26th Street into a prominent gateway from suburban Bryan to downtown Bryan.

This renovation project is located on the edge of downtown Bryan and suburban Bryan. The transformation of the entire lot will create a connection between the two areas and will draw visitors from each side. West 26th Street will serve as a prominent gateway into downtown Bryan.

SPLIT CONTAINERS
ADD ACCESS POINTS
Shipping container architecture inherently comes with the condition of “contain,” with the container serving as an object that defines space. In this container complex, the notion of a limit is tested as a central glass spine halves the containers to create a corridor and more livable spaces.

TUSCAN DRAFTHOUSE AND SUITES CASTIGLION FIORENTINO, ITALY TEAM: RYAN CHAPMAN AND MADISON VAN PELT Castiglion Fiorentino, a small hill town in eastern Tuscany, is divided into the “old city” which is surrounded by the original medieval walls, and the “new city” which is an extension in the valley. The Tuscan Drafthouse + Suites is located in the new city, adjacent to the train station. The complex includes a microbrewery, a restaurant, a hotel and a shopping gallery. It will serve as a new landmark in Castiglion Fiorentino that not only serves as a meeting place for residents, but also draws visitors from surrounding towns. The building form maximizes space, increases views, blocks the train tracks, and funnels passersby into the welcoming piazza. The dogtrot acts as a frame for Cassero’s Tower, the heart of Castiglion Fiorentino’s Estruscan archaeological site.

THE HIDDEN DOOR SAN MARCOS, TEXAS TEAM: STEPHEN TARVER AND MADISON VAN PELT This industrial design project thoroughly examined the purpose of a door and how its characteristics can transform a space. The structure is designed for the main entrance of the Purgatory Creek Nature Center in San Marcos. As the name suggests, the door is “hidden” within the wall facade, and the pattern on the door and the wall flow seamlessly. The stained wood facade brings natural materials to the building, and the varying heights and lengths of the layers relate to the natural topography of Purgatory Creek. Scattered windows allow for interesting light patterns on the interior. The overall wall dimension is 8’-0” x 8’-0” with a 7’-0” x 3’-6” pivoting door.
