GIVING HOPE THAT CHANGES LIVES A Message from Our President & C.E.O., Steve Turbeville

Dear Friends of Lighthouse Ministries, I am pleased to present our 36th anniversary annual report. The following pages will provide affirmation of the excellent services Lighthouse Ministries, Inc. has provided since 1977. Each day within the Lighthouse Life and Learning Campuses, leadership teams are meeting to clarify mission, vision, core values and pathways. Community leaders provide direction, local pastors mentor and teach God’s word, and staff and volunteers come along side to share God’s truth. The result is spiritual growth, not only hearing the word of God, but also obeying His word. We are witnessing hundreds of decisions of faith in Jesus Christ. From these decisions comes a desire to grow in faith and become productive citizens, and the joy of serving together. It is our desire to be the best at providing a campus of learning and to be a change agent to point people to Christ, and see those who were once deemed unemployable receive employment and become leaders in every area of life. Your support provides education, employment and leadership to hundreds of former homeless and hurting people who are now in leadership positions helping others make good choices to become productive citizens. Thankfully we are able to provide services without government funding. Our financial accountability is transparent through a local Advisory Council, Executive Board, Charity Navigator and ECFA. We depend solely on individuals who give time, talent, treasures, and influence to support the ministry. Today we operate 6 H.O.P.E. Centers, 7 family stores, a Gospel Rescue Mission emergency shelter, the Jay & Eloise Troxel Family Life Center for women and children, the Emmanuel residency program for men, the George W. Jenkins Center of Learning for our community preschool and NOVA Adult Learning classes, “See the Need, Help us Feed” outreach to local churches, the Compassion Card to address panhandling in local communities, and servant leadership job creation. We believe God has changed these hearts. We’ve witnessed measured results, and not just by our measurements, but by those who have seen first hand the change in those we serve. Thank you for “Giving Hope that Changes Lives.”

HOW IT ALL BEGAN... “As the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.” Joshua 11:15, NKJV

36 years ago, Carl Warnock was given a concern for the homeless, a vision passed on to him by others. Carl purchased an abandoned liquor store at the corner of Kentucky and Bay Street. He called a close friend, Jim Welch, and they united to carry out God’s command WARNOCK WELCH

AFFIRMATION THROUGH THE YEARS “The quality of a community can be largely measured by how it protects its most defenseless citizens. I extend my best wishes for your continued success, and offer my personal thanks and that of the City, for your contributions to our community.” -Lakeland Mayor, Gow B. Fields (March 2012) “What a joy it is to openly declare that in Christ we can find true hope, security, acceptance, and forgiveness. Our Father has called us to protect the widow, the orphan and the poor, and I commend you for showing God’s grace and mercy to so many families through the years.” -former Florida State Senator, Ronda Storms (February 2012) “Whether it is your food and shelter ministries, education and life planning, or spiritual guidance, Lighthouse truly goes to where the need is in our community. Lighthouse also sets the example for legislators and policymakers around the country. We must be constantly reminded that while we may have the ability to change laws, only Christ, and those who serve Him, can change hearts.” -U.S. Congressman, Dennis Ross (March 2011) “Since 1977, you have provided food, housing, educational and employment opportunities to hundreds of men, women and children. In addition to meeting their basic needs, you have inspired them to become successful and productive in every aspect of their lives. I wish you much continued success in your vitally important work.” -Senator Bill Nelson (April 2009)

GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION 20,453 total nights of lodging in 2012

HOPE can take on many forms A hot meal. A warm bed. A shower. Clean clothes. A roof over one’s head. It’s in simple things such as these where hope can have a beginning. The doors of the Men’s Gospel Rescue Mission open daily at 3:30pm, 365 days a year, to those in need. Men and women are welcome to attend the chapel service and hear the Gospel message, and follow it up with an evening meal. Men can then stay overnight and receive the care they need - not only tangibly, with clean sheets and clothing - but spiritually, as well, through discipleship and counseling services.

January 2, 2013 saw the beginning of the Men’s Gospel Rescue Mission Dorms, with completion anticipated for early spring. Remodeling includes updates to the kitchen, courtyard, dining and chapel area. There will be additional space for classrooms, as well as an elevator for easier access to the facilities. The $1,000,000 award to help with the remodel came from an application submitted by Community Southern Bank to receive grant funds from the Affordable Housing Program administered by FHL Bank of Atlanta. The partnership with Community Southern Bank has also provided the ministry with a bridge loan to facilitate the remodel. We would like to thank our local partners Community Southern Bank, Straughn Trout Architects, LLC, Folsom Construction Management, LLC, City of Lakeland, the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority and many other supporters who have accomplished this task in record time.

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM 115 program residents in 2012 HOPE that transforms Our residents come from all sorts of backgrounds. Some are escaping abusive relationships. Others are battling addictions. Many are struggling with financial hardship. Whatever the case, all are looking for a new beginning. The Residential Program of Lighthouse Ministries sets individuals on what is known as the Four Pathways to Progress: Spiritual Growth, Community, Industry and Education. The program focuses on re-building the individual, starting with a solid foundation in Christ. From that, they learn how to build and maintain healthy relationships, and are supplemented with resources such as F.I.T. (Family Integrity Training) and Celebrate Recovery. Attention is also placed on fostering a strong work ethic, and setting career goals.

“When you look at me, you wouldn’t think that I’ve gone through some things. You wouldn’t think that I’ve lived in an abusive home...I grew up thinking I was a failure, no one loved me, and no one would ever love me. You wouldn’t think that I’ve been to jail four times in my life for drugs and alcohol and that I’m a registered felon for the poor choices I’ve made. Since I’ve been in Lighthouse, I’m beginning to find out who I really am....I’m starting to believe in myself, and I’m growing closer to God....I’m coming to peace with my past and am now working on a better future by focusing on today and finding God’s purpose for my life.” -Alyssa, program resident/intern

GEORGE W. JENKINS CENTER OF LEARNING

230 adult graduates since center opened The promise of HOPE in the future Located within the The George W. Jenkins Center of Learning is an Adult Learning Facility & Career Center and Lighthouse Community Preschool. Through the NOVA Program (created by Innovative Learning Systems), residents who enter the program are tested, and an educational “prescription” is written to help them achieve the educational goals that will best prepare them for the future. Lighthouse Community Preschool is a ministry to the residents of our program with children, as well as a service to our community. Our state-licensed facility and staff follows the necessary guidelines for educating children through a faith-based curriculum called Wee Learn, and providing them with a safe, loving learning environment.

Bob Relph is one of our valuable adult learning center volunteers, and helps to tutor residents as they work to further their education. It’s easy to see how much he enjoys the time he spends with the men and women. “I’ve gained more than I’ve given out,” he says. Bob has had the opportunity to watch many men and women succeed as they either obtain their GED, or go on to college. “But,” admits Bob, “the biggest success is seeing them accept Christ.” EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEMBERS: PAUL ASHCRAFT DIANE BROADUS JOHN GRACIK WALTER MCGREEVY BOB RELPH EDNA KYLES BRETT VOGELER

Nurturing HOPE in young hearts Lighthouse Community Preschool is one area of the ministry’s focus on future generations, beginning at infancy, and continuing on through the stages to preschool age. Our afterschool KidCare Program, located in Hobb’s Foundation Kid’s Technology Center in the main campus, supports the school-age children of our female residents with tutoring and positive mentoring. The facility supplies children with the tools necessary for scholastic achievement.

“I have been using Lighthouse Ministries’ preschool since 2004. All three of my children have attended full-time and one has graduated. As a single mother of three, finding quality, Christian care was a priority when I began my search. I looked at several different schools and didn’t feel as though those schools were employing genuine, Christian childcare employees who were eager to spread the word of God by instilling it in the children. However, Lighthouse felt different. Within months of enrolling my oldest son, it was clear that the staff truly cared for the children and were doing their jobs to the glory of God... I know my children are learning about Jesus and being taken care of. This is the most important thing, and I am thankful for Lighthouse.” -Rachel Milner, Preschool Parent (pictured with her children)

COMMUNITY OUTREACH 9,477 food boxes distributed in 2012

Reaching out with a hand of HOPE The Lighthouse H.O.P.E. Outreach Centers have 6 locations throughout Polk and Hillsborough counties. These are branches of the ministry that serve individuals and families by providing case management, food, clothing, household items and other provisions to those in need. Local churches and ministries can also partner with our “See the Need, Help Us Feed” food box ministry, and help provide even more individuals with the assistance they need.

The Compassion Card has provided a generous community with an answer to the question, “Should I give money or not give money?” Pairing this card with a bottle of water or food has become a way to guide individuals in need toward hope. The number, when called, can help direct those reaching out toward the resources they need, and providing them with transportation to food and shelter. Community partners include the Salvation Army, Talbot House Ministries, City of Lakeland and The Mission of Winter Haven. Get more information at www.lighthousemin.org

HYDROPONICS GARDEN 140,009 meals served in 2012 HOPE grows here One of the unique aspects of the ministry is the Hydroponics Garden. It yields a wide variety of produce such as strawberries, green beans, lettuce, mustard greens and more...and all the proceeds benefit our guests and residents. Known as “Project Green Thumb,” the garden has become an area of work therapy for our male residents who help with its maintenance. Thanks to an $8,000 grant, provided by Hydrostacker, the garden received some much needed renovations in 2012.

“I came here homeless and addicted to crack cocaine and looking to change my life. I had tried to complete some things as far as my schooling, but I didn’t because of my drug addiction. I came here wanting to get a closer relationship with God and get my life back on track...Lighthouse gave me hope to continue to change and connect back to my children.” -David, program resident/intern (David returned to school back in January and is currently enrolled at Traviss Career Center. He is pursuing a career in cosmotology and plans on graduating in June. His long term goal is to manage his own salon.)
