The 4th Bestselling Children’s Book Series of All Time
Unsung
Chooseco was bootstrapped into existence as a small independent publisher by a large order from Barnes & Noble in the spring of 2006. That sale was made via a lucky introduction to the B&N children’s buyer. We had yet to hire a Sales Director, but in the meantime, a consultant we were using made short work of “getting you best in class independent reps for the four book territories” that spanned the United States. “You should thank me,” he added.
Coming from a guy who tended to exaggerate, that was an understatement.
Remember 2006?…Ebooks were making their debut, people spoke resignedly of the end of print, thecompany-that-shall-not-be-named was continuing to cannibalize the bookstore business, and the first tremors of the Great Recession were on the horizon.
From the start, our reps — many of whom are still with us today — were dauntless. They cheered us on, made tactful suggestions (my favorite being that a seasonal catalog should have the season specified on its cover, as in “Fall 2007”). This stalwart crew patiently answered our questions (yes, you need an internal warehouse code as well as the ISBN, and no, a book without a title on the cover might look cool but it would not sell and thus was not the best idea). Another thing we noticed: they took as much care with a $50 order as with one for $500. As the economy worsened a few years later, they barely looked up from what they were laboring on. They continued to open new accounts, mourned the loss of old ones, and kept writing orders.
As we now know, the announcement of the death of print was premature. One bookstore chain died. Miraculously, the small indie store made a comeback. Chooseco’s independent book reps had an outsize impact on that rebirth. But as usual, they made little fuss. They were too busy! They continued to open accounts, cheered the wave of new stores, watched others turn into small independent chains, and kept writing orders.
It dawned on me that good book reps have an exceptional combination of both heart and steel. To my eye they are also some of the hidden pillars of our society. In a world gone mad with clickbait and misinformation, they help hold us up and all together. Books answer bigger questions and deeper needs than Twitter and the nightly news. Without them, we would have folded long ago.
This is a heartfelt shoutout to all of them from all of us. We are so grateful for what you have done on our behalf. THANK YOU ALL.

CYOA’s first self-published gift will appeal to nostalgia fans, making the deck a collector’s item!
Illustrations by Brian Anderson
A new take on the traditional cards. Artist Brian Anderson has created a diverse cast of teens to inhabit the classic Major and Minor Arcana figures. Our iconography is faithful to the famous Rider-Waite deck. Brian adds a new dimension to the images with his steampunk-inspired aesthetic. What better place to look for guidance in making a choice than the CYOA Tarot Deck? A 128-page booklet aimed at the beginning student of Tarot by CYOA author and tarot practitioner Rana Tahir is included with the box. Great gift for both nostalgia fans, tweens, and teen audiences.
Brian Anderson (cover artist of our longerformat CYOA, Murder at the Old Willow Boarding School) created a fictional boarding school, The Arcana Institute, where gifted students of The Tarot go to learn as inspiration for all 78 cards in the deck.

Choose Your Own Adventure’s first math workbook is different from other workbooks: it’s a gamebook! The Dregg Disaster is an original and cleverly designed interactive story for students learning Algebra I.
Something fishy is going on at Dregg Corporation, the biggest employer in your town. You’re determined to find answers, but in order to make your next choice, you’ll also have to find solutions to algebraic equations along the way!
Each of the four chapters includes an “Adventurer’s Advice” section to help students navigate their way through the gamebook if they find themselves in need of algebraic assistance.
“I picked up The Dregg Disaster for myself, as an adult, and I am beyond obsessed with it! I teach 6th grade special education and can’t wait to use it in our class. I literally walked around the school this morning sharing the book with EVERYONE! PLEASE make more of these math books! They are SO fun and an incredible way to teach math.”
– Karen Evans, 6th grade teacher

R. A. Montgomery was an adventurer all his life, climbing mountains in the Himalaya, skiing throughout Europe, and scuba-diving wherever he could. He wrote his first interactive book, Journey Under the Sea, in 1976. A few years later Bantam bought this book and gave Montgomery a contract for five more. He died in November 2014, only two months after his last book was published.
