A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
A Year of Surprises & Small Truimphs
As I write this in mid-March, I am looking out on a winter wonderland that can (sometimes) be late winter in Vermont. Two nor’easters have blown through in the past ten days, dumping more than 50 inches of snow, and leaving snowbanks as high as eight feet in my driveway. It’s hard to believe that in 90 days, my early lettuce will be about to bolt, and the first garlic scapes of the year will be emerging.
Another thing that is hard to believe is that just over one year ago, on a business trip to Montreal, I realized that the quiet evening streets outside were the result of the city being under a curfew due to high rates of COVID. We were still deep in the throes of the pandemic. Now I look around, and it’s as if Bert the Below Average (Fairy House) has waved his wand and made it all, almost, go away.
It’s been a year of other trials. Like every publisher in the world, Chooseco struggled mightily with the supply chain and a shortage of nearly everything we need to function — from paper to press time to shipping containers to ink. But I am extremely happy to report that all of this has finally shifted. Our latest print run from Kuala Lumpur has made the boat trip in near record time. We no longer need to book a press run four months ahead. Even costs have come down.
It’s also been a year of surprises and small triumphs. Choose Your Own Adventure was lauded in a lengthy profile in the September 12, 2022 edition of The New Yorker for four decades of cultural impact and our “enduring allure.” (We’ll take it.)
If you haven’t read Leslie Jamison’s wonderful piece, do look it up
online
In ten days, I will travel to Oxford, England, where again Choose Your Own Adventure will be lauded for its cultural importance and impact on a generation, this time in a dedicated space at The Story Museum. The show will open on April 1 and will run for three years. Its extraordinary designers are hard at work nailing and painting and gluing and polishing as I type. You can find a sneak peek inside The Story Museum exhibit on the following page.
Finally, in a triumph of mutual admiration and fanship, Chooseco has partnered with Netflix and Penguin Random House to produce a Stranger Things Choose Your Own Adventure based on Season 4 of the hit series. Heroes and Monsters was written by the talented and imaginative CYOA author Rana Tahir (CYOA SPIES: Noor Inayat Khan). It officially publishes on April 18, 2023, to be distributed by PRH, and frankly, it’s stupendous. We can’t wait to see what new young fans of Stranger Things will think. We kind of suspect they’ll like it.
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous summer and fall...
Warm regards,
Shannon Gilligan PublisherThe Story Museum Unveils a New Choose Your Own Adventure® Installation within the Enchanted Library
The Story Museum in Oxford, England is opening a brand-new immersive story space based on the Choose Your Own Adventure book series which captivated and inspired a generation of young readers throughout the ’80s and ’90s. The installation opens April 1 and allows visitors to choose between more than 28 different plot lines, each one beautifully brought to life in miniature by The Story Museum’s team of designers and artists. Visitors will be able to search for the Abominable Snowman, take a terrifying trip on the Titanic, look for the lost jewels of Nabooti, and blast off into hyperspace. In the words of the books themselves; “You alone are in charge of what happens in your story.”
