Circus Images Cities Instructor: Mario Gooden Site: National Gallery, Dakar Individual Work

The concept behind this project was inspired by an African animation called “The End Of Carrying All”. The backdrop of the film was made with layers and layers of fabrics so that as the audience varied their positions, they could see a unique scene from different angles. At the same time, the audience who might consider themselves as spectators in fact became a part of the display through another person’s perspectives. This special technique created an extraordinary experience and idea for the audience because of the various overlapped timelines that interacted in this project.

Circus The definition of a circus is to design an extraordinary experience and visual l display for audience. The Circus was created to entertain humanity both through positive and negative experiences. The show only presented one single point on the timeline of the lives in a circus while there aremany conflict timelines behind it. The audience may never knew that some animals have been maltreated by trainers, or even sometimes the circus play a role in human trafficking for wired show and slave. However, if the audience knew the truth, they will have a fresh yet perhaps conflicted perspective for the show. If all the information could be revealed to all, the idea of circus and animation will create a very complex experience for people.

Engagement The basic idea of the National Gallery is a place to represent the work form local artist for the publics. This means that the information was sent from artist to people, and people could decipher the messages with different ideas. The gallery located in a very conflict place. It is surrounded by a new hotel (Hyatt), a sandwich layer of local community, one oldest market, a renewed street, and two modern buildings done by Pierre Gouiabay (local architect). Additionally, national gallery is located in a colonial building.

National Gallery It showed the different time period and faces of Dakar, including the past, present, and future. Each of the elements surrounded by the gallery could be seen as unique reflections and heritages of their creators. The National Gallery is a bridge between the contemporary local artists and travelers around the world. Furthermore, the internet community will have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the culture and ideas that is passed down through generations at the National Gallery.

Program Strategy National Gallery already provides several programs and events for local people. Such as art exhibitions, art exchange workshops and performances. These programs could be integrated with urban senses and activities. This proposal of architecture is to design a petition to create an extraordinary experience and completed idea based on the context, and integrate them. It redefines the gallery as an interactive platform which could create and facilitate conversations between presenters and recipients. This two different ethnic groups of people to share their opinions and information.

EW Section National Gallery is a sponge where activities could be absorbed from streets, communities and hotels, and transferred back to the gallery. It is a mechanical kaleidoscope which engaged the city by extending the arts and performances in the lives of local people.

Clinic at park Instructor: Bernard Tschumi Site: Morningside Park, New York Team Work with Su Jeong Lee *Only indiviual drawing present

We believe this place should cultivate integration for diverse people groups and elements. Also, the architecture should be an in-between space of two communities: natural and artificial; thus creating a bridge between patients and people in park. In addition, we think the clinical space is a healing place for all visitors because the main purpose of a clinic is to heal people. We believe this project can bring physical, emotional, and spiritual healing and relaxation to everyone. By eliminating the physical waiting room, the most sufferable place, we would like to better use the spaces around the clinic and restore what traditional clinic used to be—the center of a community—by planting gardens, inviting coffee shops, hair and nail salons, and installing simple playground equipment.

We can conclude by defining the three groups of people that interact in the clinics: patients, joggers, and casual visitors from the nearby two communities. In the center of this architecture should be a meeting space for all community members in the park. Every person must pass by the center space. Furthermore, the paths are not disturbing clinic, but could experience the space. A separate passage that intercepts the open waiting area, but visually it remains blocked off from areas with more clinical functions; for example, the treatment rooms and doctors’ offices. The passage allows public users (joggers) visual access to all the activities inside the open waiting area.

Ground Lower Plan

Upper Level Plan

As we know, people always suffered in waiting time in the US medical system. In this project, we re-define the experience during that lengthy waiting time in a clinic and create a friendly experience (reading, eating, chatting, and taking a nap). A clinic is usually a place for those in need, but not friendly and open to the companions or publics. However, clinic in the park is an opportunity to make what was once a closed place blossom for the general publics, making it a part of people’s life like other public architectures. In addition, it is a public space for Harlem people and Morningside people to meet each other, and share the resources in

Non-stop Neighborhood

Instructor: Hilary sample Site: Bronx, New York Individual Work

Master Plan

Warehouses occupied the site

Redrawing the Bronx: This site is located in the lonely island catted out by traffic. The master plan is to create a new relationship between the urban, design, and infrastructure. In addition, the affordable housing project focuses on helping the residents to engage in their neighborhood, supporting their basic living expenses and inviting more people to Bronx. Therefore, we could create more job opportunities in Bronx and further the safety of neighborhood. Activities area

The revolution plan on the site is to redesign the warehouse and vacant land into the public and commercial space. One of the strategies is to elevate the building on the street. The original street condition was empty and barren. This openness brings activities and safety into the community.

Street View:

Building Material: The housing unit is designed by the 20 feet by 20 feet and 20 feet by 40 feet used container. It is inexpensive and easy to transport in the city; moreover, it assembles very fast on the construction sites.

Street and Public Space: The soul of an active community is composed of friendly and accessible public spaces and streets. A good street life is always based on the friendly infrastructure, such as benches, Citi Bike stations, street lights, and trees. In addition, the communal space (semipublic space) could make strolling through the streets enjoyable. However, the warehouse should play an important role in the neighborhood such as a park, swimming pool, and community center. The warehouse roof top is one of the connections between housing and streets. Additionally, the warehouse does not serve the publics traditionally, it then becomes a lively platform for the visitors and residents.

Landscape: There is a 30 feet height difference between the east to west of the site thus allow the existing buildings located on a huge staircase. This creates great difficulty to build a good connection with neighbors. Consequently, the walking experience is very bad. In order to improve the quality of living experience for the residents is to extrude a terrace from each level and connect it each other. This strategy creates three times the size of their exiting sidewalk. Therefore, various activities and events could take place on different levels.

This circulation creates a safe path for residents and walkable shopping streets for visitors. Making the public space a bridge between businesses and residences could encourage more people to be involved in their community. This mixed-use development not only continues the walkable life style from Manhattan to Bronx, also creates a new vision for the neighborhood. This could improve the lives of home business owners who reside in a studio or two-rooms apartment, so they could open day care, coffee shops, drink places, clothing stores.

Units: The unit had been make by container, constructed as the lego system. It bring the flexibility for switch/add/ minus the program or space. The some of the housing units provide an opportunity to start a small business in their place. The plants shading system is a semi-concealed door also, it can adjusted the opening on the balcony. For example, the units right next to the street may need more plants to cover their windows and balcony.

Evolving Epigenesis

Instructor: Mark Bearak Site: Comlumbia University Team Work

Humanity is now generating more waste than ever before - the average person creates 4.3 pounds of waste per day, which is 1.6 pounds more than what most produced back in 1960. Approximately 55% of 220 million tons of waste generated each year in the United States ends up in one of the over 3,500 landfills. There now is an unprecedented need to find ways to reuse and recycle the waste humanity generates, and R-EX explores how architecture can minimize the amount of waste we put into the ground by discovering ways to repurpose discarded and unwanted materials for the purpose of creating a pavilion for Governor’s Island. R-EX will utilize lumber previously used for construction scaffolds for the creation of a series of arches that, when combined, form a skeletal vault which will be infilled with a folding skin that is compiled from discarded billboard ads. The resulting structure will provide a significant amount of shade for the sun-baked island and will stand the test of time due to the resiliency of the selected materials.
