The Bow Is the Season's Most Versatile Hair Accent By Patricia Garcia

1 of 10 From a quick look at the spring 2014 collections, now is the perfect moment to polish up on your ribbon-tying skills. Once the favorite style of French sixties sirens like Catherine Deneuve and Brigitte Bardot, the decorative hair bow seems poised to make a modern comeback. At the Nina Ricci show in Paris, for instance, models’ low

ponytails were cinched with slim black loops of fabric that trailed down the back of their fluttering, white-washed slip dresses and camisoles. According to backstage hairstylist Guido Palau, however, the look wasn’t meant to be too pretty. “It’s deconstructed and slightly naughty,” he said of its masculine undercurrents, which loosely referenced the courtly influence of “Louis XVI and Mozart.” Streetstyle star Hanneli Mustaparta, who has been spotted dashing from one front row to the next with a similar ribbon fastened in her own dark hair, agrees that more girlish interpretations of the style look best when they create a hint of sartorial tension. “It’s like when you wear your boyfriend jeans. You need to pair it with something more feminine,” she says of striking the right XX/XY balance. With a bow, “I think the makeup needs to be less cute, too,” she adds, before conceding. “Or you can just go all the way and wear it with a supergirly Valentino dress.” For those who prefer a more toughened-up version of the look, the Balenciaga show offered a new streetinfluenced incarnations. There, hairstylist Paul Hanlon fastened a large swatch of black leather or satin over girls’ crowns before knotting it into a backward bandanna for the runway. The takeaway? An oversize bow in an unexpected material adds a playful, slightly subversive touch—the perfect accompaniment to one of the house’s pristine shirtdresses or, say, a Saint Laurent motorcycle jacket. As for where to buy the right swath of knottable fabric, a trip to the nearest trimmings store holds endless possibilities in terms of print, finish, and color. And if going to the Garment District is out of the question, a quick peek in your boyfriend’s closet might do the trick. Of her very first bow, Mustaparta shares: “It was actually a necktie. I found it vintage shopping—and I just put it around my head.”1 December 06, 2013 6:00a.m. The bow has always been a delight! When you add Holiday and Bow together it just makes it that much special.
