ERIN MULLIGAN INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2021
ERIN MULLIGAN VIRGINIA TECH FALL 2021
HELLO I have always been drawn to design and knew early on that I wanted to do something creative in the arts. My passion for the arts began with drawing, painting, photography, and film. As I grew up, my curiosity slowly developed into a love for interior design. I am now a senior interior design student at Virginia Tech, and over the years Tech has given me the opportunity to explore and understand the industry, helping me develop my own design narrative. In my studies and projects, I aim to incorporate a mix of influences, materials, philosophies, and forms. I consider each of my works as an invitation to embark on an unexpected and captivating journey. I am also grateful for my internship experiences, as they have given me the confidence to be bold, design responsibly, and always look to enhance the environment and human experience to ensure a future of equity, resilience, and wellbeing. I hope to communicate my love for design by continuing to create inspiring and thoughtful experiential spaces for others to live, work, and grow.

LITTLE CANYON SPA Holistic Spa and Residence Kanab, Utah | 4,460 SF Utah’s Colorado Plateau is famous for its sandstone cliffs, slot canyons and winding waterways. Nestled in the middle of this natural beauty is a town called Kanab, the design inspiration for Little Canyon Spa. The intent of this spa is to create an inviting environment that is designed to engage and meet the physical and mental needs of MS patients, giving them a center to receive therapeutic treatment. Paying tribute to the surrounding parks, the design revolves around the geography of Kanab and the bold natural features of the slot canyons. These sandstone forms were created by the mechanisms of erosion and weathering, resulting in carved out spaces that unwind, creating moments of movement and inaction as you progress. Incorporating the organic and undulating forms, with features such as light passage and contrast, the spa is transformed into a place where one’s body begins to connect with nature and a space for wellbeing.

Over millions of years, water, mostly in the form of flash floods, has scoured, chiseled, and smoothed canyon walls to expose layer after layer of rock. When passing by the window looking into the pool room, the back wall is framed in a way to resemble these layers and how it was a result of water erosion.

Kanab has some of the most beautiful landscapes in all of Utah, making it a photographers dream location. The image above was taken by a local photographer and was blown up to create a stunning wallpaper. It captures the striking layers of the sandstone cliffs and the lines give the eye an impression of unmistakable curvature.

NEXT Steelcase Student Design Competition Beauty Cosmetics Company New York, NY | 15,000 SF The concept for the space was inspired by its close proximity to the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. This complex is home to a diverse team of dreamers, collaborators, and entrepreneurs who advocate for the transformative impact of artistic experiences. In relation, the purpose of the NEXT office is to create a space where people can participate in active learning and make an impact as innovators working toward inclusivity and change within the beauty industry. The layout of the Lincoln Center is very classical in form and aesthetic. It uses the basic principles of design with a central focus to draw visitors in. To represent this within the NEXT office, the space is spatially layed out using the principles of proportion, repetition, hierarchy, and balance. This layout helps distinguish each space from one another, in turn helping inform the main circulation throughout. The axis point within this space is the main circulation stair that provides refuge for visitors and a place to colloborate with one another. NEXT office puts an emphasis on celebrating the diverse needs of each employee, uniting occupants together and with their surrounding city through spaces that foster collaboration and rejuvination.

Opera House - Represents the center for the fine arts complex. It is a place of congregation and activity just like the reception and lobby is at NEXT. Julliard School - Home to a diverse group of individuals studying and collaborating in a work environment. In the NEXT office this space is best represented by the open office and work cafe. NYC + Vivian Beaumont Theater - Home to a theater, library, and museum, these buildings offer quieter, more refined spaces. This translates into the private offices and meeting spaces within the NEXT office where heads down, private work takes place. Philharmonic Hall - Sparks creativity in listeners and is known for its action and liveliness. The marketing side of the NEXT office perfectly represents this as those occupying the space are fueled by creativity and visions.
