In the Crossroads of Kansas City, MO, 1801 Walnut anchors the affordable housing market in a quickly gentrifying neighborhood. Natural ventilation and daylighting strategies, coupled with a density of just under 200 beds on the .9 sq mile site, make dignified living available to those who would otherwise be displaced.

Two unit types - single-bed micro units and six-bed shared units - make up the residential blocks of the building. Access to daylight and ventilation allow individual control over comfort levels, dignifying living space. Surrounded by primarily low-rise development from the previous century, the building is split into smaller blocks to relate to the context. Six live-work units, retail, and a public alley park help tie the ground floor into the fabric of the community.

1801 walnut As the Crossroads are just beginning to densify, being one of the first high-rise buildings requires sensitivity to current as well as future surroundings. Division of the building should help to negate urban downdraft effect, while the permeability of the facade helps to lighten the building visually. Designing for density makes this building feasible, while moves for natural ventilation and daylighting reduce costs for residents and reliance on the grid. Affordable housing can sometimes come with an attached stigma -- but when the precedent is set for dignified living no matter the cost, we provide quality design for all income levels.

intercity artists’ studios A group of Kansas City artists require a set of connected studio spaces for collaborative design processes that maintain some privacy. Enscape, Illustrator, Photoshop, Revit, Rhino
12
These artists have come to the neighborhood and woven themselves into its fabric, but they also stand out as individuals among the larger whole. This proposal looks at the existing concrete structure as an asset, creating a heavy shell from which smaller, lighter glass spaces emerge.
13
The physical and visual connections between the four workshops allow the artists to share a building while maintaining individual workspaces. Portions of each studio are kept tucked away, allowing the artists a degree of privacy. The courtyard separates the spaces while still allowing for connection between studios during showcase events.

intercity artists’ studios Designed as a space for both collaborative and solitary design processes, this four-studio complex encourages connection between artists through physical and visual means. The contrasting material choices emphasize the individuality of art and its creators, while the old and new interact harmoniously to create unique experiences throughout the project.

j.c. harmon high J.C. Harmon High School in Kansas City, Missouri sought exploration of modern teaching concepts in the design of its new school. Enscape, Illustrator, Photoshop, Revit, Rhino

The focus of this design is the learner-centered approach. In this method, each student’s path is determined by their personal interests and guided by an instructor, giving the student a strong voice in the direction of their education. This idea requires flexibility within the classroom, providing options in seating and group size for students.

The school is divided into three learning academies, each with an internal courtyard. Designed as a “heart space”, or a place where casual interactions take place, the courtyards are part of a network with larger “heart” spaces, including the library, cafeteria, and lounge spaces. These spaces become crossroads for the various academies, encouraging collaboration and community between students of all ages.
23
j.c. harmon high Although divided into learning communities based on career path, most of these high schoolers have attended school together since they were young. Providing spaces for friends to connect daily while still maintaining a home base within each academy became the programmatic idea for the design. Some spaces were needed for afterhours community courses, events, and gatherings, so the semi-public spaces were moved to the front of the building. This allows for the closure of the private spaces reserved for education. J.C. Harmon High has developed an innovative teaching system, and their environment is designed to reflect that uniqueness.

downtown fabric A faรงade unification project draws tourism to Mankato, KS. Proposed designs value the past of building and town, creating a cohesive modification strategy. Illustrator, Photoshop, Rhino
30
Once a thriving industrial town in north-central Kansas, Mankato is now home to less than half of its one-time 2,000 residents. Stories are told of days where the town came alive at sunset, while today only a few shops open their doors. This is to be challenged and changed.
31
114 n. commercial In its past life as a barber shop and cafÊ, this building was a part of the day-to-day life of Mankato’s residents. Over time, this building has lost its purpose, falling into disrepair and shuttered to the elements. It is used only intermittently as a meeting space for the local Masonic lodge, which will soon consolidate with another chapter, leaving the building empty.
32
a revelation of glass From historical images, it can be decided that this building likely has framing for expansive glass on the lower level, and the original limestone can be repainted for a modern look. An uncovered iron column is just a peek into the possibilities of the faรงade underneath. This proposal takes the best qualities of the past and brings them forward to marry with modern elements.
33
121 e. main With a place on the secondary street of downtown, this building’s past is more secretive than others. In recent history, it has served as private storage for the owners, who have quiet plans to convert it to a quilt shop. Since its last known service as the only bar in town, this barn facade has become dated and weathered.
34
from barn to brick The few images found show a brick facade with large windows and decorative metal elements in the frames. A secondary entrance has been removed, and large transom windows have been hidden. The remaining windows offer an idea of what used to be. By undergoing the proposed changes, the worn face of this building would be modernized by reverting to traditional materials.
35
124 n. commercial Being the largest continuous structure on the main thoroughfare, this currently “do-it-all print shop has history as a general store, owned by the same family for generations. Located prominently on a corner, this structure has potential for retail on the ground floor with residential on the second level.
36
color catalyst There is no clearer example of the effect of color on a building. By choosing a more traditional color that is harmonious with the rest of the block, the appearance of the upper faรงade is completely changed. Removing the cladding from the lower level brings continuity with other structures, while awnings protect openings from the direct evening sun.
37
downtown fabric This faรงade unification project emphasized the preservation of local history in Mankato, in order to create a draw for commercial tourism. Each building in the downtown area was toured, photographed, and researched before a meeting with the owners to establish the project direction. Real world practicalities like budget, resources, and time shaped the project, resulting in realistic strategies for change. Proposed designs value the past of the building and the town in which it exists, creating a cohesive and respectful modification strategy while challenging the current downtown fabric to become something more.
