Welcome to Summertime ErinoakKids Summer Activities The activities listed in this brochure are available for clients currently receiving services at ErinoakKids. Please be sure that she or he meets all of the indicated requirements for that activity before registering your child. You may be asked to provide a support person for your child. Enrollment is limited. We will do our best to accommodate all requests. Please indicate your specific requests (including location) in order of preference on the application form. Families will receive confirmation of their requests in May 2013.

Respite for Families Out of Home Respite Camp
ErinoakKids Respite Adventure Camp provides short periods of respite for families with children and youth who have significant special needs. Children enjoy a wide range of activities such as community outings, games, crafts and swimming. This is only for families who receive Enhanced Respite Funding. Program fee: $125 (day) $250 (overnight).

Preschool Age Children Come Play With Me (age 2-3)
In this activity for children, parents or caregivers learn how to support their child in play and communication in a group setting, while the children enjoy opportunities to further develop fine motor skills, expressive and receptive language, and social and play skills. A parent or caregiver must fully participate in this activity, so we ask that Program fee: None. you do not bring any additional children.

Parents will learn how to support their child in learning emergent literacy and preprinting skills. A parent or caregiver must fully participate in this activity, so we ask that you do not bring any additional children. Program fee: None.

School Age Children Let’s Make Friends! (age 8-10)
In this activity, children learn appropriate social skills in a safe and secure environment. They learn to share, take turns and join in play through the use of games, role play, modelling and other fun activities. Program fee: None.
The child should: • •

School Age Children
Movin’ and Groovin’ Multi-Arts Program (age 8-13)
This is a multi-arts program offering participants varied means of creative expression. A multi-disciplinary approach is used including drama, dance and art activities that build communication skills, encourage development of social skills, and enhance self-esteem – along with the simple joy of being creative and having fun. Program fee: $175.
The child should: • • •
be able to participate in a group setting; be able to follow directions; be able to attend to a task.
Please note: We welcome the support of a special needs worker. Your child may be invited to a pre-group assessment to determine if the activity is suitable for your child. You may also be asked to provide a support person if supervision is required for personal hygiene or safety.

School Age Children Helping Hands (age 5-10)
This activity is for children with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, hemiplegia. Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is used to help children with impaired hand and arm function (hemiplegia) participate in a variety of activities using their affected hand and arm. The child’s unaffected arm is restrained by a splint. A parent or caregiver must attend some of the sessions, and be willing to ensure the child continues to wear the splint for the prescribed period of time at home. Program fee: $30 for the splint.
The child should: • • • •
be a client receiving Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy services, whose therapist recommends this service; have hemiplegia affecting an arm and hand, but some use of the limb; have the ability to follow directions and participate in a group setting; have been free of seizures for at least six months.
Please note: Your child may be invited to a pre-group assessment to determine if the activity is suitable for your child.

School Age Children Riverwood Explorers (age 8-13)
This program in partnership and supported by the Mississauga Garden Council, lets children enjoy outdoor activities at Riverwood Conservancy, a 150 acre property with trails and wildlife and an indoor air conditioned facility. Participants will develop walking skills, endurance and cardiovascular fitness while engaging in walks and other fun and recreational activities. Program fee: $60.
The child should: • • • • • • • • •
be a client receiving physiotherapy services; be able to participate in a group setting, follow directions and attend to a task; enjoy spending time outdoors, enjoy nature and be willing to try new activities; be able to walk with or without crutches, canes or walker for five minutes; be able to climb up and down four steps with a rail with or without assistance; be medically stable; be seizure free for at least six months; come with a daily snack, lunch, water bottle, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; wear appropriate outdoor hiking clothing, including sturdy shoes.

School Age Children
Riverwood Adventurers (for children with autism age 5-9)
This program in partnership with and supported by the Mississauga Garden Council, lets children with autism enjoy outdoor activities at Riverwood Conservancy, with its trails and an abundance of wildlife including deer, owls and pond life, plus an indoor air conditioned facility. Children will learn to: • make a request appropriately with unfamiliar adults or peers; • engage in appropriate behaviour during non-structured times; • increase their number of appropriate social initiations toward peers; • increase appropriate participation in group camp routines and activities; • increase their number of on-topic responses and questions to peers; • generalize existing communication skills into a new environment; • follow directions from unfamiliar adults; • take their turn. Program fee: None.
The child should: • • • •
be receiving ABA-based Services and Supports; be able to follow one-step instructions independently; have no significant behavioural challenges; be toilet trained.

Children learn things such as making a request with unfamiliar adults or peers, engaging in appropriate behaviour during non-structured times, increasing the number of appropriate social initiations toward their peers, increasing appropriate participation in group camp activities, increasing the number of appropriate on-topic responses and questions to peers during social conversations, generalizing existing communication skills into a new environment, following directions from unfamiliar adults and taking their turn. Program fee: None.
The child should: • • • •
be attending another camp over the summer; have a communication system; have no significant behavioural challenges; be toilet trained.

School Age Children Community Outings (age 5-9)
Children and their parents enjoy outings and work on goals such as requesting to have needs met with unfamiliar adults or peers, transitioning away from preferred things or activities, community safety, using a grocery list, waiting in line, ordering from a menu, using money, generalizing communication skills into a new environment, following directions from unfamiliar adults and engaging in appropriate behaviour during non-structured times. Program fee will vary with the activity.
The child should: • • •
have a communication system; have no significant behavioural challenges; be toilet trained.

School Age Children Soccer (age 5-9)
Children learn soccer, including warm-up exercises, foot work through obstacle courses, drills and whistle skills, kicking, throwing, various soccer-specific scenarios and cool-down exercises. Program fee: None.
The child should: • • •
be able to communicate needs effectively and participate in a group environment; be toilet trained; be able to walk and run independently.

July 16-August 22 (Tuesdays)

Mississauga: 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. F.B. McFarren Memorial Park, 5255 McFarren Blvd.
ErinoakKids Eagles Baseball (includes Youth, age range 6-19) Children and youth learn baseball skills in a competitive or recreational league, in partnership with the Erindale Little League. New participants may be required to complete an assessment to determine program suitability. Each player will receive a team shirt and cap. Program fee: $60 includes the shirt and cap.
The child should: • • •
have proven ability to be successful in a group setting; be toilet trained; be able to communicate needs effectively.

June 19-August 14 (Wednesdays) with a barbecue on August 21.

School Age Children
iCan Bike (includes Youth, age range 8-18)
The goal of iCan Bike is to teach children with disabilities to ride a conventional twowheel bicycle and become lifelong independent riders through the use of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and trained staff. With 75 minutes of instruction over five days, over 80 per cent of riders learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently by the end of the program. Participants will be contacted after registration form is received to complete a detailed biking assessment and to choose session times. Program fee: $135.
The child should: • • • • • • •
be able to walk independently without assistive devices; be able to side step to both sides; wear a properly fitted bike helmet; wear a minimum inseam of at least 20 inches; does not exceed the weight maximum of 220 pounds; be able to follow basic instructions in a group setting; be motivated to learn to ride a bike.
Please note: There is a mandatory parent orientation on July 7, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Carmen Corbasson Community Centre, 1399 Cawthra Rd. For the program itself, participants are assigned a 75-minute session which they must attend each day of the program in all consecutive days. (Clients indicate their top two preferences.)

Youth
Independent Living Program (age 16-19)
Presented by ErinoakKids Occupational Therapy in partnership with Participation House, this unique program offers youth an opportunity to live at the Sheridan College residence in a barrier-free apartment and have access to 24-hour attendant services for personal care needs, while they learn the skills of independence. Participants learn essential life skills including: using attendant services, directing their own services, using accessible transportation, managing money, meal planning, meal preparation, personal safety skills and more. Information session topics include accessible housing options, recreational equipment and opportunities, community safety skills, advocacy skills, and relationships. Participants will also be responsible for setting their own personal goals and working toward achieving them, for independence. At the Independent Living Program, we encourage participants to make choices and take control and responsibility for their own actions. As a result, participants are given the dignity of risk and are able to experience the natural consequences of their decisions in a supported and safe environment. Enrollment is limited. Applicants will be contacted for an interview, and selected based on the interview and how their goals fit the program. Cancellations must be received two weeks prior to start date. Refunds will not be given after the program starts. Program fee: $600 registration, plus $125 brought to the program.
The youth should: • • • •
be seeking an independent living experience; be motivated to attend and learn independent living skills; have the ability to set goals for future and be prepared to work towards them; have the ability to problem solve and participate in group experiences.

Youth
Taking Care of Business (age 14-18)
Taking Care of Business (TCOB) enables young people with physical disabilities to develop pre-vocational skills while developing and implementing a business plan. Participants are challenged to create and run a food service business to serve ErinoakKids staff. This provides an excellent opportunity for youth to explore individual interests and continue their journey towards independence. The participants will: • apply for jobs in one of three areas: food preparation, money management or marketing; • be encouraged to set their own goals and work towards them with guidance and support from ErinoakKids staff and volunteers; • have the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of teamwork, communication, organization, money management, shopping, meal preparation and computer skills. Program fee: $50 for materials.
The youth should: • • • • •
be seeing an ErinoakKids occupational therapist who recommends this camp; have the ability to participate in a group setting including group discussions, following directions, attending to a task and problem solving; demonstrate basic literacy, math and organizational skills; be motivated to develop employment skills; have an interest in applying for one of the above mentioned job opportunities.

Youth
Pump and Swim (age 14-18)
Teens learn to improve their fitness level while participating in an individual workout program in a weight room and pool environment. Participants will: • develop fitness goals in the areas of strength, cardiovascular fitness and flexibility, and learn to achieve them while improving self-image and confidence; • learn to exercise and safely use gym equipment, and acquire skills and knowledge to continue with a fitness routine on their own. Program fee: $160.
The youth should: • • • • • • • • • •
be receiving services from an ErinoakKids physiotherapist; be able to walk independently with canes, crutches or a walker, or if using a wheelchair, must have independent arm movements to do strengthening exercises; be able to follow instructions; be able to participate and work in a group setting; have active movement in arms and/or legs; be able to maintain fairly good bench sitting balance (i.e., trunk and neck control) be able to transfer independently or with one person assisting; be comfortable in the water; be medically stable (participants with a heart condition must have written consent from their physician). All swimmers who are incontinent must wear pool pants.

Families Family Respite Weekend
Hidden Acres Mennonite Camp is a 22-acre camp and retreat centre nestled among the gently rolling hills and farms of Perth County. The spring-fed pond, countless trees and acres of grassland provide a quiet and secluded break from the pressures of daily life. The camp program includes a range of recreational facilities with shared support for your child and your family. Over the course of the weekend, families can enjoy organized activities including camp fires, soccer, baseball, hiking and swimming. Hidden Acres is located at 1921 Line 37, New Hamburg, Ontario.
