Workplace Design Millions of telephone calls are processed every day by Amtelco systems and software in operation in all 50 of the United States and more than 20 foreign countries. Amtelco has been family-owned for 45+ years. Being entrusted with telling the Curtin Family story, through tasteful building updates has been very rewarding but designing for your coworkers does have its challenges. I gained the trust of leadership by slowly implementing consistent branding, signage, and color updates. Adding employee amenities, wellness spaces and biophilic imagery has brought the company headquarters to a finish level with a positive impact on recruiting and retention. 1

Phased Interior Build Out Project Management/Design With most employees working from home during covid, Amtelco used the opportunity to complete a $600K interior face-lift while the building was mostly empty. I was the liaison between the project architect and general contractor to convert manufacturing space to finished open office, meeting and ancillary spaces. A small portion of the phased project plan is shown above. Sound masking, systems furniture, value engineering, finish selections 3
Before Breakroom Expansion The original breakroom had cinderblock walls, an awkward layout and lacked seating. By expanding into the adjacent production space, trenching for utilities and furing out the wallsemployees now have a spacious, relaxing place to congregate. Not shown: new employee gallery

“Duck Pond” Team Room Amtelco legacy graphics from 1985 were combined with current finishes to connect generations of employees to the proud company history. The Duck Pond is the first conference room in the building to have a wet bar and it quickly became the most used meeting space in the building!

Diagram: Presentationproducts.com Sound Masking As a “department of one” I had to educate my superiors and open office occupants on the principals of sound masking and its limitations. Amtelco invested in sound masking in the open plenum area and above grid near the adjacent private offices. One portion of a multi-layered audio privacy solution for a company growing from private offices to workstations. All low-voltage was pulled for future planned workstations at this phase. 7
Value Engineered Lighting, Photometrics, Custom Power Poles Our electrician did a great job working with us to specify in-budget, readily available LED fixtures. Photometric calculations and fixture specs were reviewed by myself and the GC. All power and data was pulled for future workstations. Custom furniture whips were required due to ceiling height.

Systems Furniture Standards Most Amtelco employees occupy private offices. Gaining acceptance of growing into the remodeled open office by way of workstations took some finesse. Equity, station size and storage options were carefully considered while navigating ceiling obstructions, and a phased install. Earthtones and biophilc elements made the space feel homey and appealing.
9
Private Office Furniture Standards Continued growth plus a few retirements led to extensive private office updates. I worked with HR to create director level and executive office standards, resulting in a cohesive aesthetic with equity in-mind. Occupants are presented with storage, seating, ergonomic and ancillary options to personalize their space within company approved parameters.

LEED Submittal Tracking As a construction coordinator at Creative Business Interiors, I was able to support several Verizon retail store builds that achieved LEED certification. The main areas I tracked were construction waste and recycling, and material ingredients. I recently earned the LEED Green Associate designation and aspire for LEED AP ID+C.
11
CAFM Facility Management Software As a member of the facilities department at Exact Sciences, we onboarded new Computer Aided Facility Management (CAFM) software to track occupancy and moves across the sprawling campus. This project included hours of data cleanup, AutoCAD drawing revisions and setting of naming conventions for the rapidly growing cancer diagnostics company.
12
Naming and Numbering Conventions As part of the CAFM project, all campuses, buildings and workstations needed to be named. Our team created numbering conventions and trained all departments how to use wayfinding resources to navigate new buildings and leased spaces.
13
RFP and Bid Responses Having worked at a contract furniture dealer and for a large publicly traded organization, I have helped create bid response packages and produce RFP specification requirements and typicals. I enjoy pulling together and formatting supportive documents.
14
Move Coordination My main role at Exact was to work directly with the occupancy planner to coordinate musical chairs between departments, buildings and campuses as the company grew at a frenetic pace. I met with department heads and presented move plans, resources and schedules, then hired the proper labor and equipment. Moving desks, offices or buildings can be very upsetting for some, and not all employees read or follow instructions. Communicating early and often resulted in successful moves-including the relocation of 200+ executives to the newly built headquarters as covid arrived in 2020.

BFA-Interior Design Capstone Project Working in Sports architecture has always been my ultimate dream. My love of athletics and inclusive design culminated in the design of a fictitious paralympic training facility as my capstone project. I had the pleasure of interviewing members of the UW-Whitewater wheelchair basketball team, many of whom were paralympians as well. Designing for a range of abilities was very challenging and humbling.

Design by Leathers Associates Kiln, Mississippi Area-Hurricane Katrina Relief Trip
River Heights Elementary-Menomonie, WI
mabeltainter.org (Menomonie, WI)
Hands-On Leadership I had the opportunity to volunteer with a community funded and built accessible playground, modeled after a local landmark. After participating in several meetings, I was appointed as art director. In this role I worked with the out of state architect to develop theming, then trained onsite volunteers to paint murals and other details. After Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast, I went on a university sponsored aid trip to Mississippi. I then coordinated a return trip to the same area a year later and led two van loads of college students on a 10-day home rehab journey. I fell in love with the rebuilding spirit of the South and served in Louisiana after graduation as a member of AmeriCorps.

Organic Commandments & Fallingwater Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation
Local Inspiration I grew up about 25 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin and Hillside School in Spring Green, WI. His architectural contributions to Wisconsin and beyond were of early interest. In high school, my architectural drafting classmates and I coordinated a cross-country road trip to the iconic Fallingwater home in Pennsylvania. I landed an internship at Marshall Erdman (now ERDMAN) in Madison, WI which had just moved into a LEED Gold headquarters. Marshall Erdman had worked under Wright and my internship at the healthcare design firm was a dream come true. After graduation, I worked at the Wright designed Monona Terrace in Madison as a community events associate and tour docent. Monona Terrace became the first convention center in the nation to earn LEED Silver certification (now certified Platinum). These experiences formed my views on the power of design and sustainable building practices. 18
