ARTIST IN RESIDENCY

DESIGN INTENT

ARTIST.

THIS PROJECT PROPOSED TO CREATE AN "ARTIST IN RESIDENCY" FOR A FACULTY MEMBER IN THE

THE CONCEPT OF THIS PROJECT PUSHED

UTK ART DEPARTMENT. MY PROJECT PARTNER

TO INTRODUCE SUSTAINABILITY ON A

AND I WORKED WITH A POTTERY PROFESSOR,

HISTORICALLY UNSUSTAINABLE SITE. THE

WE EMPATHIZED WITH HER ABOUT HER NEEDS,

HISTORIC ECOLOGICAL IMPACT THIS SITE

CLARIFIED HER SPACE REQUIREMENTS AND

PRODUCED THROUGH QUARRYING, AS WELL

GOT A CLEAR APPRECIATION OF HOW HER

AS THE MANUFACTURING OF MARBLE, CAUSED

PRODUCTION PROCESSES IMPACT HER WORK

CHEMICAL AND DUST POLLUTION. BECAUSE OF

AREA.

THIS AND RESIDUAL RADIOACTIVE CHEMICAL WASTE, THE SITE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA

OUR PROJECT SITE WAS A HISTORIC SITE CALLED

HAD FALLEN INTO RUIN. OUR GOAL WAS TO

CANDORO MARBLE IN KNOXVILLE, TN. WHAT

NOT ONLY TURN THE FABRIC OF THIS BUILDING

WAS ONCE THE MARBLE SHOWROOM WAS

INSIDE OUT, BUT TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY

TRANSFORMED INTO OUR ARTIST'S GALLERY

OF VESTAL IN A PARTICIPATORY SUSTAINABLE

& RESIDENCE, IDEAL FOR DISPLAYING HER

ENVIRONMENT THAT EDUCATES AND PROMOTES

WORK AND ENJOYING HER PERSONAL SPACE.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING.

AN OLD AND WEATHERED ADJACENT BUILDING THAT WAS ONCE A WAREHOUSE BECAME THE

OUR CONCEPT WAS IMPLEMENTED THROUGH

ARTIST'S MAKER SPACE. THIS IS A SPACE WHERE

SEVERAL PROCESSES THROUGHOUT THE

MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY COULD GATHER,

SITE WHICH CONSUME AND DESTROY THE

WORK ON POTTERY AND LEARN FROM THE

HISTORICALLY UNSUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS. 9

MAKER SPACE THE MAKER SPACE IS AN ADDITIONAL COMPONENT TO THIS "ARTIST IN RESIDENCY" PROJECT. WE CHOSE TO UTILIZE IT AS A MODULAR SYSTEM TO PROVIDE AN AREA FOR THE COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER ON OUR SUSTAINABLE SITE TO MAKE POTTERY IN THEIR OWN STUDIO SPACE. MAKING POTTERY ISN'T CONSIDERED THE MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRACTICE, BUT OUR SITE PLAN AND MAKER SPACE UTILIZE ITSELF TO MAKE THE MOST SUSTAINABLE AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITY FOR THIS PURPOSE. OFFICE SPACE

DESIGN INTENT THE FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN

WHERE THEY LIVE. I MIMICKED THIS IDEA WITH

AN OFFICE AND A PICTURE VIEWING SPACE

THESE PROTRUSIONS AND POCKETS THROUGH-

FOR ANNAPURNA FILMS. THE SITE IS THE PRE-

OUT MY SPACE, SOME OF WHICH ARE HABITABLE

EXISTING FIREPROOF STORAGE BUILDING IN

AND SOME ARE NOT.

KNOXVILLE, TN. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED A LARGE THEATER, A SMALL THEATER, SEVERAL PERSONAL OFFICE SPACES, A MEDIA LIBRARY, SEVERAL CONFERENCE AND MEETING ROOMS, A LARGE PUBLIC SPACE AND MANY OTHER ADDITIONAL SPACES. MY DESIGN UTILIZED HALF OF THE EXISTING BUILDING AND FIVE TOTAL FLOORS. THE CONTINOUS RIBBON SEEN FROM THE FACADE OF THE BUILDING PROVIDES A FLOWING MOVEMENT THROUGH THE SPACE, INDICATING FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING WHAT IS ON THE INSIDE. THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT PROTRUSIONS INTEGRATED IN THE FLOORS AND CEILINGS. THIS WAS INSPIRED BY THE RESEARCH I DID ON THE NEW ZEALAND GLOW WORM. THESE GLOW WORMS CREATE THEIR OWN WEBS IN A POCKET-LIKE STRUCTURE 21

RETAIL AND SERVICE

DESIGN INTENT THIS PROJECT IS MAINLY FOCUSED ON THE

CREATING A COMPLETELY ACCESSIBLE SALON

FUNCTION AND THE ABILITY OF THE BUILDING

AND SPA, INCLUDING STYLING STATIONS

AS WELL AS AN ORIGINAL TILE DESIGN. OUR SITE

AND CHAIRS THAT CAN BE EASILY REMOVED,

WAS THE DAYLIGHT BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN

ARRANGED AND ADJUSTED FOR ANYONE. I

KNOXVILLE TENNESSEE, AND WE WERE ASSIGNED

WANTED MY TILE DESIGN TO BE THE MAIN FOCUS

A PROGRAM OF A SALON AND SPA INCLUDING

IN THE SALON AND SPA AND WITH ALL OF ITS

A RETAIL SPACE. WE DESIGNED FOR HALF OF

COLORS AND PRESENCE I KEPT THE REST OF THE

THE SEMESTER AND THE SECOND HALF WAS

SALON PRETTY MINIMAL. I WANTED THE SPACE TO

SPENT DOING A FULL SET OF CONSTRUCTION

FEEL AS IF IT WAS A VERSATILE AND CLEAN SLATE

DOCUMENTS IN REVIT. THE TILE DESIGN I

SPACE AND THE COLORFUL TILE WAS IN A WAY AN

CREATED IS A WALL TILE, IT'S 3D AND STICKS

INSTALLATION IN THE SPACE ALTHOUGH IT WAS

OUT ROUGHLY 3 INCHES. THE PATTERN IS A

PERMANENT TILE.

COMBINATION OF COLORFUL 3D TRIANGLES IN 3 DIFFERENT SHADES. THE COLORS WERE CHOSEN BASED ON THE FEELING DESIRED IN THAT SPACE AND THE COLOR, PROJECTION AND SHARPNESS OF THE TILE IS USED TO DRAW SOMEONE INTO THE SPACE AND GAIN THEIR ATTENTION. WE HAD A HUGE EMPHASIS ON ACCESSIBILITY DESIGN, FLOOR PLAN LAYOUT AS WELL AS THE SITE CREATED A CHALLENGE IN HAVING A LEVEL SALON AND SPA WITH OUT STEPS. I COMBATED THE UNLEVEL SITE WITH A TOTAL OF 2 RAMPS

COMMUNITY CENTER

DESIGN INTENT LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF MARKET SQUARE,

FOLLOWING THIS INFORMATION I WANTED

THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AND WORLD’S

TO CREATE A PLACE THAT INTRIGUED THE

FAIR PARK, L&N STATION IS A CENTRALLY

SURROUNDING COMMUNITY AND VISITORS

LOCATED SITE IN DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE.

ENOUGH TO BRING THEM IN AND HAVE THEM

DESPITE ITS CENTRAL LOCATION IT IS OFTEN

COMING BACK. SO I CREATED A TAPROOM

OVERLOOKED AND PASSED BY BECAUSE OF

THAT INCOURAGES PEOPLE FROM EVERY

THE WAY IT SITS ADJACENT TO WESTERN AVE.

GENERATION TO INTERACT AND LEARN FROM

I WANTED MORE INFORMATION FROM THE

ONE ANOTHER WHILE SHARING A COLD BREW.

BY INCORPERATING INTERACTIVE FURNITURE, A

THIS HISTORICAL BUILDING SO I SURVEYED 75

CONSTANT CHANGE OF NEW FOODS FROM LOCAL

PEDESTRIANS, 25 ON CAMPUS, 25 IN MARKET

FOOD TRUCKS AND VENDORS, A NEW BAND OR

SQUARE AND 25 IN WORLD’S FAIR PARK. I

COMMEDIAN ON SCHEDULE AND A FEW CLASSIC

SHOWED PEOPLE SEVERAL PICTURES OF

GAMES I SEE AN ABUNDANCE OF OPPURTUNITY

L&N STATION, MANY PEOPLE HAD SEEN THE

FOR CULTIVATING COMMON AND UNCOMMON

BUILDING BUT THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT

RELATIONSHIPS .

WAS. SOME PEOPLE VOLUNTARILY MENTIONED THAT THEY THOUGHT IT LOOKED HISTORICAL AND FOUND IT REALLY INTRIGUING, WANTING MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BUILDING. THIS SHOWED ME THE PUBLICS INTEREST OF THE SITE REGARDLESS OF THEIR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT A PIECE OF HISTORY IN KNOXVILLE TENNESSEE.

DESIGN INTENT THIS INDUSTRIAL DESIGN PROJECT

TO STORE AND RELEASE FACE WASH WHEN

ENCOMPASSED THE REDESIGN OF AN

NEEDED. WHEN THE SILICONE CAP IS REMOVED

AUTOMATIC FACE WASHING BRUSH, MUCH

TO UTILIZE THE BRUSH, IT FITS AROUND THE

LIKE A CLARISONIC. MY DESIGN IS INSPIRED

A COMFORTABLE GRIP. THIS FACE BRUSH

PROVIDES OPTIMAL COMFORT, FLEXIBILITY AND
