Century Turn of the

The weathered slats of the boardwalk hold firm. Stoic under the harshest conditions, persevering through severe elements, with the weight of thousands on its shoulders. It’s no wonder Atlantic City beckons to those who mirror its traits. The do-ers, the builders, the risk-takers- those who saw opportunity in grasslands on the shore between the sand dunes and a hard place. The Spring/Summer 2013 Legendary RAW Collection takes its inspiration from this boardwalk empire. Colors are rich and neutral – no-nonsense brown contrasts with classic blacks, tans, and pebbled greys. Textures and materials inspired by a time when dress shoes weren’t just for special occasions- canvas is rough, suedes feel rough, leathers are supple, and rough- the right decision for stepping out or stepping in it. Design is classic - brogues and eyelets show the world that you’ve made it, with the delicate discernment to keep it to yourself.

“The past as a way of informing ideas for the present is always interesting. The period around 1904 was a great hook to hang a new range of shoes and boots on to, whilst also adding to the story telling aspect of the brand – as the spirit of the Turn of the Century also coincided with the origins of Caterpillar as a brand of machinery. It helped to ground the work for me. For inspiration, we struck gold straight away with a visit to the Northampton Shoe Museum, just outside of Birmingham, in the UK. With fellow designer Kirsty Bradford, we spent a whole day looking at shelves stacked full of dusty boxes, not knowing what we would find under the lid. The Victorian and Edwardian shoes and boots we saw had just the right kind of detail we were looking for to feed back into the designs. AW12’s 'the Orson', with its unusual curved top line and French- binding detail came directly from this. Also, happening upon a shelf full of branding stamps and old boot polish tins sparked the idea for the tongue label tab. Visiting the museum made the work authentic and real.”

Shontelle

Shontelle continues to move the Earth. Projects as diverse as being a special guest on The Voice – Norges beste stemme in Norway, perfecting the ultimate No-Makeup Makeup look with makeup artist Leora Edut in New York City, spending time back in her home country of Barbados, and putting the finishing touches on the Rockwilder – produced club smash “Ready To Go” are all in a day’s work for the multi-faceted recording artist, and Cat Footwear collaborator. Her work with Cat, continuing into Spring/Summer 2013, takes Shontelle’s trademark attitude and passion for sharp, yet feminine design and makes it apparent on every shoe hin the line from the scalloped, stacked heels to the bold straps and buckles that explode with vivid color pops of white wood, yellow toe caps, and ocean blue laces.

“We worked to capture the spirit of Cat by telling a story through the clothes. The looks are multifaceted and layer simple, wholesome textures. We used chunky knits, colored suede, and raw denim along with sheer silk, crepe chiffon, and worn-in modal to create a halo of muted colors and strong neutrals around the shoes and their color pops. As a brand, Cat is strong and durable, and through this styling, we aimed to give it a feminine sensibility.

Join the Party The weekend sounds better than the rest of the week. Music is crisper, cleaner; the acoustics are clearer. Jokes are funnier. Friends are more interesting, more entertaining- they’ve got big ideas, big collaborations, big plans. The competition is stiffer; best of three becomes best of five becomes best of seven. When the sun begins its decline over the horizon to the other end of the world, when house slippers are replaced by white outsoles, guitar solos move to bass drops, 1967’s old favorites from the reimagining of Caterpillar become new classics for 2013, it’s time to join the party with CODE.

New York City’s streets were my hallways in college. They weren’t only the paths to my classes but they served as lessons themselves. The concrete and cobblestone’s heartbeat was energizing to me, just like I think it is for all who set foot on it. There’s an energy here that I can’t really explain, but it provides the foundation of my cinematic style. This energy means that I don’t have to invest so much time in planning as I do in listening to my environment. Especially in NYC, the right shot usually presents itself naturally. Spontaneously. As it did for the night scenes in this CODE video. It’s a beautiful, beautiful thing....

Coac h e l l a

Coachella is a party in the desert. A weekend-long music festival of rock, indie, hip-hop, and electronic music, it kicks off the summer festival season in the Coachella Valley, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, outside of Los Angeles. The event, renowned for its cutting-edge lineup, hosts celebrities, style icons, and 80,000 close friends at five stages, each playing continuous live music throughout the day. Daytime temperatures reach over 43° in one of the United States’ hottest and driest spots. All tickets consistently sell out within hours of becoming available. Brands throw invite-only pool parties, late night events, and debut new campaigns. 2012’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival featured Radiohead, the

Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Miike Snow, Justice, Florence and the Machine, At the Drive-In, the Weeknd, AVICII, Calvin Harris, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Gotye, Martin Solveig, Madeon, A$AP Rocky, Childish Gambino, Pulp, Frank Ocean, Refused, St. Vincent, and more with unscheduled appearances by Usher and Rihanna. Headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s performance was punctuated by a hologram performance of the deceased rapper Tupac Shakur who then disappeared into thin air. Cat Footwear sent CODE Product Designer, Ryan, and International Marketing Manager, Ken, there to check it out, report on trends, and keep the brand fresh.

Coachella Recap This year, it rained. “Coadrizzle,” was what the Twitter hashtag called it. What’s normally a huge sunny, sweltering hot festival meant that style had to get a little creative. People were undeterred however, but instead of the full-on “show all of your skin” aesthetic because of the unpredictable weather, we got layers matched with the typical festival attire you’d expect to see. Ladies were loving lots of crochet, fringe, and straight-out of the prairie floppy brimmed hats. Red, matte lipstick reminded us of New York, and the high-waisted short denim cut-off shorts that seemed to be on every girl definitely needed to go away and never come back. On both guys and girls, neon color pops were everywhere on braclets, headbands, sunglass rims, and shoe laces. Guys were all wearing Wayfarers, but the cool ones had tortoise frames over the traditional black. Vintage was still huge too, just as long as it didn’t look too dusty - but if you wore a snapback hat featuring a retro college, NBA basketball, hockey, or NFL American football logo, you could do no wrong (Ken’s favorite? Quebec Nordiques).

Heritage There’s a certain kind of person who excels at the hard work. The kind of work that moves a kilo of gravel before lunch. The “don’t tell me you’re sore in the morning” kind of work. They’re calm, cool, collected, drawing inner strength and exerting it with reckless abandon. A testament to the fact that you only get out what you put in. And they leave nothing behind. When the boots are off, unlaced and untied, strewn about by the front doorway, the Rugged Collection’s thick lugged outsoles, rough chambray, and an authentic heritage is familiar. Shoes as tough as nails, but a whole lot more comfortable- like a jobsite’s far-away dream. Punched out style, for the person who’s always punched in.

What’s your favorite thing about living in China?

Hangzhou is a leisure city, the happiest city in China. Life here is a really great experience. My friends and job are all here. In Hangzhou, I like to go hiking with friends in my spare time, or sitting alone quietly on the side of Xihu Lake, doing some thinking. It’s very relaxing, I think this is the charm of Xihu.

Where’s a good place to eat?

In Hangzhou, you can enjoy authentic Hangzhou hawker food on Hefang Street, Gaoyin street, and Shengli He.

What’s the best thing about running your store?

The best thing about managing the store is the time when our team members reach a consensus, and achieving the goal through the efforts of the entire team.

120 Global Retail

What does everyone in town do for fun?

Strolling in the historic area of Xihu, Drinking a cup of tea in Meijiawu, Enjoying the plum blossom in Chao mountain, Climbing mountains and so on.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened in your store? Haha….Maybe I can’t say.

What’s your favorite Cat product?

Colorado! The classic yellow boot of Rugged Equipment.

If I’m traveling to visit China, what three things should I bring?

Your body, a backpack, and a heart that can feel the local culture and humanities.

What’s your favorite song right now? Lovely Day

New York Native Son, the four-year old fashion label and creation of designer Kyle Fitzgibbons, aimed to create a quiet and introspective collection for Fall 2012. The presentation, on February 9, has been quoted by reviewers as being “sharp and tough, both forwardthinking and historically-minded1,” and capturing “the perfect balance of “referencing the past, existing in the present and looking forward to the future2.” Native Son’s interest (along with collaborator Raleigh Denim) in American heritage and classic designs, lead him to feature Cat Footwear’s Morrison from the Legendary RAW Collection at New York’s 2012 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. 1 2
