The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized numerous sectors, including education. One notable advancement is OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a powerful language model capable of generating human-like text. While this technology offers immense potential for positive applications, it has also introduced new challenges, particularly in the realm of academic integrity. Cheating using ChatGPT is an emerging issue that educators, institutions, and policymakers need to address urgently.
ChatGPT can perform various tasks, such as writing essays, solving complex mathematical problems, generating code, and even creating creative content like poetry and stories. Its ability to understand context and produce coherent, relevant responses makes it a

valuable tool for many legitimate uses. However, this same capability can be exploited by students seeking to complete assignments and exams dishonestly. Students can prompt ChatGPT to generate entire essays or answer specific questions related to their assignments. By slightly modifying the generated content, they can submit it as their own work, evading plagiarism detection tools that primarily focus on matching existing published content. In online learning environments, students might use ChatGPT to find answers to exam questions in real-time. This is particularly problematic in unproctored or open-book exam settings, where students have more freedom to access external resources. For coding tasks, students can ask ChatGPT to write functional code snippets. While learning to code
off AI-generated code as one’s own undermines the educational process.
The misuse of ChatGPT in academic settings can have several negative consequences. The core value of academic honesty is compromised, affecting the credibility of educational institutions and the validity of their qualifications. Students who rely on AI to complete their work miss out on the essential learning experiences that assignments and exams are designed to provide.
Teachers and professors may find it more challenging to assess student performance accurately and may need to spend additional time developing new strategies to detect AI-generated content. To combat cheating using ChatGPT, a multifaceted approach is required.

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF TEACHING: A Crucial Step for Basic Education
UNICEF. (2021). Education: Access to education.
The quality of teaching remains a cornerstone of effective basic education, yet many educators face significant challenges that hinder their ability to provide high-quality instruction. Education experts and policymakers are calling for urgent reforms to address these issues and enhance teaching standards across the globe.
High-quality teaching is not just about mastery of subject matter but also the ability to engage and inspire students. However, many teachers lack access to continuous professional development, leaving them ill-prepared to adopt the latest educational methodologies and technologies. This gap in training is a significant barrier to improving educational outcomes.
“Continuous professional development is crucial for teachers to stay updated with innovative teaching practices,” said Dr. Jane Smith, an education consultant. “Without ongoing training, teachers struggle to meet the evolving needs of their students.”
Resource constraints are another major hurdle. Many educators work in environments that lack basic teaching materials and support, making it difficult to deliver effective instruction. Experts argue that providing teachers with adequate resources and a supportive work environment is essential for enhancing teaching quality.
In response to these challenges, education leaders advocate for a shift in how teacher evaluations are conducted. Rather than punitive measures, evaluations should focus on professional growth, encouraging a culture of continuous improvement. Mentorship programs, where experienced teachers guide and support newer colleagues, are also gaining traction as a valuable tool for professional development.
“Mentorship programs can make a significant difference,” noted Dr. Emily Johnson, a senior lecturer in education. “Experienced teachers can provide invaluable insights and support to less experienced
colleagues, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.”
Governments and educational institutions are urged to prioritize teacher quality by investing in robust training programs, fair compensation, and career development opportunities. These investments are seen as essential for attracting and retaining talented educators who are committed to their profession.
“By elevating the quality of teaching, we can ensure that students receive the education they need to succeed in an increasingly complex world,” emphasized Dr. Smith.
As the new academic year approaches, the call for reforms in the quality of teaching grows louder. Stakeholders hope that by addressing these challenges head-on, they can create a more effective and equitable education system that benefits students and teachers alike.

Breaking Down Barriers for a Brighter Future
espite global advancements in educational policies, millions of children worldwide still face significant barriers to accessing basic education. Experts and advocates are urging for immediate action to dismantle these obstacles and ensure every child has the opportunity to learn.
Access to education is a fundamental right, yet disparities remain stark. In many parts of the world, children are unable to attend school due to poverty, geographic isolation, and socio-political instability. Rural areas, in particular, suffer from a lack of schools and educational resources, leaving children with limited or no access to learning opportunities.
get an education,” said Dr. Ahmed Al-Mansouri, an education policy advisor. “We need to bring schools closer to communities and ensure safe passage for students.”
Socio-political instability further exacerbates the issue. In regions plagued by conflict or political turmoil, schools are frequently closed or destroyed, and children are often displaced. Protecting educational institutions and creating safe learning environments in these areas is a priority for international aid organizations.
“ D“Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty,” said Maria Gonzalez, director of the Global Education Initiative. “When children can’t go to school, they lose the chance to build a better future for themselves and their communities.”
Poverty is one of the most pervasive barriers. Many families cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or supplies, forcing children to stay home or work to support their families. In response, several organizations have called for increased funding for scholarships and educational subsidies to alleviate financial burdens on low-income families.
Geographic location also plays a critical role. In remote or conflictaffected areas, schools are often too far away for children to attend safely. Transportation infrastructure is either inadequate or non-existent, making daily commutes to school impractical. Initiatives to build more schools in underserved areas and provide reliable transportation options are essential steps toward improving access.
“Children should not have to walk for hours just to
Efforts to address these barriers have seen some success. Programs like UNICEF’s Education Cannot Wait fund are providing emergency education services to children in crisis zones. Additionally, communitybased initiatives are working to create local solutions tailored to specific challenges faced by different regions.
However, advocates stress that more must be done. Governments, NGOs, and the international community must collaborate to create comprehensive strategies that address all facets of
educational access. This includes not only physical infrastructure but also policy reforms that prioritize education in national agendas.
“The global community must recognize that education is not just a privilege but a universal right,” emphasized Gonzalez. “Every child deserves the chance to learn and grow.”
As the world moves toward the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring access to education for all remains a critical objective. By breaking down the barriers that prevent children from attending school, we can pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for generations to come.

OVERCROWDED CLASSROOMS: STUDENT Teacher Ratio Crisis in the Philippines
The Philippine education system is grappling with a significant issue: large class sizes, large class enrollments and high student-teacher ratios which are badly affecting the quality of education. Scholars and policy makers are now urging for quick interventions to address this unfolding calamity.
In many public schools across the country, the number of students per classroom has greatly increased to a point that it far goes beyond the ratio recommended by the Department of Education 25 to 30 students per teacher. In some urban areas the number of students per class is between 50 and 60 students and it is unthinkable for the teachers to attend to each student’s need.
‘Teaching in such overcrowded classrooms is extremely difficult,’ noted Maria Santos, a public school teacher in Manila. This makes it challenging to control the class, and as if that is not enough, you have to ensure each child is attended to.
This paper reveals that large classroom classes have many drawbacks, such as low student interest and poor achievement rates among students and teachers. Teachers who feel overworked cannot teach as required and ensure that learners do as they are supposed to; this leads to inefficient learning.
There are a number of factors that can be attributed to the presence of this problem. High
student-teacher ratio is due to rapid population growth, low funding for education and shortage of qualified teachers. Though, the government has tried to construct more schools and recruit more teachers, these measures have not been able to address the growing student enrollment.
Dr. Elena Reyes, an education policy analyst, also called on the government to focus on education and provide the necessary funding to tackle this problem. That is why steps should be made to increase the number of classes and to decrease the number of learners per teacher.
Mitigating the challenges of student-teacher ratio calls for a multi-faceted strategy. This requires more funding to education, quality teacher training programs and favorable policies to attract more people into teaching profession. Also, aspects like blended learning and the use of technology are some of the best practices that can assist in handling large classes.
Despite this, the education community remains optimistic that these challenges will be addressed as a new school year begins. The student-teacher ratio has to be maintained at a reasonable level to provide quality education and an effective environment for the students from the Philippines.

Dear Readers,
In this issue of Mariquina Magazine, we turn our attention to a matter of paramount importance: basic education. The foundation of our nation’s future lies in the quality of education we provide to our young learners. Unfortunately, we face significant challenges that hinder our progress, and it is imperative that we address these issues with urgency and collective effort.
One of the primary concerns in our basic education system is the lack of adequate resources. Many schools across the country suffer from shortages of textbooks, teaching materials, and even basic infrastructure. This shortage hampers the ability of our educators to deliver effective instruction and stifles the potential of our students. It is crucial that both the government and private sector collaborate to invest in our educational institutions, ensuring that every child has access to the tools they need to succeed.
MARIQUINA
Another pressing issue is the quality of teaching. While we have many dedicated and passionate teachers, there is a need for continuous professional development to keep pace with the evolving educational landscape. Training programs and workshops should be regularly conducted to equip our educators with the latest teaching methodologies and technologies. This will not only enhance their teaching skills but also inspire and motivate them to bring out the best in their students.
Moreover, the curriculum needs to be regularly reviewed and updated to align with the demands of the modern world. We must ensure that our students are not only proficient in traditional subjects but also equipped with critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy skills. These competencies are essential for navigating the complexities of the 21st century and for our country to remain competitive on a global scale.
To our readers, I offer this advice: Get involved. Education is a collective responsibility, and each of us has a role to play. Parents, engage with your children’s learning and support their educational journey. Community members, volunteer your time and resources to local schools. Business leaders, consider partnerships that can provide valuable resources and opportunities for students. Policymakers, prioritize education in your agendas and ensure that reforms are effectively implemented.
By working together, we can overcome the challenges in our basic education system and pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for our children and our nation.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the betterment of our community.
Warm regards
