AUO is designing a new type of flexible AMOLED display. Our mission is to search for scenarios which can make great use of flexible display, and to develope products based on this new type of display. Bringing the flexible feature of the AMOLED to full play, designing the smartphone to be worn like a watch, we expect there’ll be lots of new and interesting interaction between users and this new type of phone. Cooperative Design Project with PANTONE 308 C 企業色

BACKGROUND MOTIVATION Usually people would put a stand to hold their Navigation device on their bicycles, scooters. People who jogs a lot would buy a band to tie their phone or any other devices on their arms. What if there’s a phone which can bend on its own and be worn on the wrist as a watch, won’t that be great!?
19
EXPERIMENT Thinking of how a thin, flexible AMOLED display can change our daily life, we searched in every aspects, from waking up turing off the alarm clock, having breakfast on the table, riding bicycle on and off work...etc. In order to experiment the possibilities of using the flexible AMOLED in each scenarios, We brought a thin, transparent plastic board with us and lived with it all the time during the 2-week experiment.
20
CONCEPT Bringing the flexible feature of the AMOLED to full play, Wrist Phone is designed to be worn like a watch, which allows the users to have more interesting interaction with the phone, and gives more possibilities to future App designs. In this project, we’ve particularly designed GPS navigation app, alarm clock app, interfaces for phone call and video call based on diverse scenarios.

MAP NAVIGATION
Fold your Wrist Phone in-ward to answer a voice call, the curve of the phone provides more of a secure feeling to the user, which is similar to the form of traditional phone. To end a call, just simply fold your Wrist Phone outward back to its original shape.
In navigation mode, the map turns based on the direction that the user is facing, while the arrow stands for current position, and flag stands for the destination. The blue glowing line indicates the route it plans for you.
VIDEO CALL You can make video call will the 4.3inch beautiful AMOLED screen. The camera is hidden underneath the screen so that users can communicate while seeing into each other’s eyes. It also shows yourself and the call time at the bottom of the screen.
ALARM CLOCK The app shows the time in both digit and clock style. It shows the current temperature and the chance of rain in percentage, while the background indicates the current weather in a full screen animation. Also, it shows important schedules of the day, clearly notifying with time, place, and whom the user going to meet.
24
25
SCENARIO VIDEO The video is shown in a brisk tone. The leading man wakes up by pressing down the Wrist Phone in a room with the sun shining in . Hooking up the Wrist Phone to the bicycle’s handle, following the direction the phone navigates, he goes and meets his friend for an outing together. The film also shows the interaction when answering a voice call - taking the phone off from the wrist, then slightly folding the Wrist Phone inward. Then, by folding the Wrist Phone backward, having the phone stands on the table on its own, he begin to chat with friends through a video call. actor: Lin, Kai-Tin filming location: Guan-Du Natural Park, Minsheng Community, E-Jia Service Apartment 26

brief
App UI 2011 Wang,Po-Hao
DSLR Controler is a app designed with the concept of Natural User Interface(NUI), and aim to simplify the conplex processes in commercial photography and landscape photography.
28
BACKGROUND MOTIVATION Commercial photography In order to get a perfect photo, frequently adjusting the lights is what the most photographers do during a commercial shooting by giving orders to the assistants. It takes months to build tacit understanding between photographers and assistants. And for those who can’t afford to hire an assistant, photographers have to walk back and forth between lights and the camera. Landscape photography Taking time lapse pictures, while cameras sitting on the tripods, photographers shoot with remote controls which are usually lack of usability. The tiny controller consist of only a few buttons while there’re many settings to be adjusted.

Cell-Phone 2011 Wang,Po-Hao Chiu,Chi Jessica Zhuang
CaCha
is a phone designed to last longer through transforming into a lomo camera. This design was developed during the Sustainable Design Workshop held by Creative Design Center, NTUST. and won the 3rd price.
42
BACKGROUND According to Inform, an environmental research agency in New York, there are about 128 million cell-phone users in the United States upgrading their phones at an average pace of every 18 months, while most of those phones end up being dumped in third wold countries where there aren’t any infrastructure to deal with these phones appropriately. Phones contain a long list of toxic substances, including lead, copper, and other hazardous materials, could later leach into the soil, the water, and the air, which brings health problems to the local people.
Average Life Period:
replace
approximately 2 years
valuable metal Abandoned cellphones are recycled and taken apart to get the valuable metal by people without protection in the 3rd world
43
44
CONCEPT CaCha is a cell phone designed focusing on the post-use in its life cycle. After the regular usage period of approximately 2 years, CaCha can transform into a LOMO camera through a simple well-designed reconstructing procedure, while hazardous components such as the touch screen, display panel, and part of the PCB board can be easily recycle. Through LOMO, as it represents the attitude toward simple life, praised by young people, we expect that CaCha will cause fewer impact to the environment.

27 LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT Briefly analyze our new design with LCA throughout every stages, from material extraction manufacture, transport & packaging to usage, post-use, and end of use, we can easily compare our design to other present phones to see whether it is more sustainable. Throughout this process, we learn that it’s impossible to take care of every aspects, and compromise must be made. But what’s more important is to deeply understand what you’re trading off, and make your design more sustainable at the end.

Evenly slice a plane into 25 square spaces, empty one of the square spaces, assign different effect on both X & Y axis, user can experience the relationship between “music”and “movement” in the process of shifting the empty space.
62
concept of CIRCLE There’re 3 concentric circle on the plane composed with 25 square spaces. The concept is to present the metaphor of “vinyl record”for it is expressive, well quality, and rich in musicality. Vinyl is also the best intermedium to explore between music and movement.
63
EXPRESSIVE Different people have different judgement and association of idea among the music, movement, and graphic pattern, so each person has their own expressing way in this installation.
