Joelle King Signs Sponsorship Agreement with Ashaway Racket Strings

WSA ranked Number 7 player thrives on competition as she rises to the top Ashaway, RI -- Ashaway Racket Strings has announced the addition of New Zealand's rising squash star Joelle King to their roster of sponsored players. Currently ranked Number 7 on the Women's Squash Association World Tour, Joelle is seen as a rising force on the squash circuit, having reached WSA Number 5 in November 2012 after winning the Macau Open, her 6th WSA title.

After switching to Ashaway's PowerNickÂŽ 18 string last year my game has been improving by leaps and bounds, so I am very excited to be named as an Ashaway sponsored player." Upcoming tournaments for Joelle include CIMB KL Malaysian Open, Texas Open, and British Open, where she hopes to continue her march to become the new WSA World Number One.

"Joelle is a very strong and exciting young player, definitely someone to watch," said Steve Crandall, Vice President of Ashaway Racket Strings. "She's the kind of player who's good for the sport and for her sponsors, and we're delighted to have her on our team."

Ashaway Racket Strings are made by Ashaway Line & Twine Mfg. Co., the only U.S. manufacturer of string for squash, tennis, racquetball, and badminton. Operated by the Crandall family since 1824, Ashaway has been making racquet strings since 1949, and is responsible for several important technical innovations. Ashaway is the Official String of USA Racquetball and the Women’s Squash Association. Ashaway Line & Twine Mfg. Co. also makes braided products for medical and industrial applications. For more information visit www.ashawayusa.com

Joelle first burst onto the world stage in April 2010 at the Texas Open where she stormed through the draw unseeded, taking out three higher ranked opponents before stunning top seed Rachael Grinham in the final to capture her fifth and biggest career title. She finished 2010 ranked Number 17, having become the New Zealand Women's Champion and winning a gold and a silver in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, and by November 2012 had reached WSA Number 5 before settling back to Number 7 in early 2013. Recently married to long-time sweetheart, Ryan Shuttle, 24-year old Joelle grew up surrounded by a large extended family including two older brothers who always made sure she had a good grasp of sibling rivalry. "From card games to backyard sport--everything was a competition to be the best!" she said, noting that now, "nothing has changed, well besides that I can now annihilate my bros on the squash court. My competitive instincts and determination to be the world's best squash player remains." For Joelle, competition is the ultimate thrill of squash. "I love to play the world's best to see how I match up," said Joelle. "That means bringing my best to the court, both in my play and my equipment.

Murray climbs up US Power 100 List Tennis players feature in the top 100 most powerful athletes onand-off-the-field in 2013 compiled for Bloomberg Sports by CSE, a leading integrated marketing agency. Britain's Andy Murray rose twenty-five places from 2011 with a power rating of 54.81 and while LeBron James, the American professional basketball player, headed the list at No 1, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams have stolen the headlines by being ranked fifth, sixth and twelfth respectively. Unlike prior years, in which the NFL dominated the top quarter of the list, the 2013 Power 100 reveals a more homogenous balance between athletes participating in individual sports and team sports. Gold Medalists from the 2012 London Olympic Games also peppered the list, including top swimmer and seasoned pitchman Michael Phelps (No 8), track and field sensation Usain Bolt (No 15), gymnastic Gabby Douglas (No 18) and, of course, Murray (No 30). This is the fourth year of the Power 100, and it continues to command attention as an invaluable tool to evaluate an athlete's brand and measure his or her market value, says Rick Horrow, CEO of Horrow Sports Ventures and host of Bloomberg TV Sportfolio: "In today's 24/7 news cycle, as athletes increasingly dominate front page headlines well out of the sports section, their endorsement contracts are increasingly under scrutiny." To determine the final rankings for the 2013 Power 100, Bloomberg Sportfolio, BSports, and Horrow Sports Ventures worked with CSE, one of the longest-running and most diversified independent marketing agencies in the country. CSE created the Power 100 list using proprietary methodology, as well as data from Nielsen/E-Poll N-Score. As in previous years, the ranking comprises only professional athletes playing in the United States. Coaches, executives, owners, agents, and even retired athletes were not considered and only regular season statistics were used. All data was analysed over a two-year basis, valuing 80 per cent for the most recent season and 20 per cent for the season that preceded it. ‘On field' attributes consisted of ranking within their sport, popularity and viewing audience and measured expected endorsement potential (75 per cent), endorsement earnings (15 per cent) and social media presence (10 per cent). Under that formula, Federer and Djokovic came in just behind NFL superstars Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, and in front of NBA Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant and the most decorated Olympian ever, Phelps. The next closest female athlete to Serena would have been Maria Sharapova if it wasn't for Olympic standout Gabby Douglas slipping in at 18 overall, thanks to her meteoric rise after the 2012 London Olympic Games. Sharapova rounded out the top 20, and Rafael Nadal fell from fifth last year to 22 this year.

Djokovic wasn't even ranked among the top 100 after 2009 or 2010, but he's made a huge splash last year and this year and doesn't appear to be vacating the top 10 in the future. Serena has always hovered among the top quarter of the list, but more importantly, she has been a mainstay among female athletes on these rankings since they've existed. Also noteworthy was the huge jump that Victoria Azarenka and Andy Murray both made in the last year-Azarenka going from 96 to 32, and Murray climbing from 80 to 31. It shouldn't come as any surprise that Federer impresses the most, as he is the only tennis player who has consistently moved up on the list every year. All in all, this is a huge step forward for the sport of tennis-it sends a message that tennis stars have as much power as NBA, MLB and NFL stars and has more clout than golf's elite right now. Horrow's partner in compiling the Power 100 and CEO of EPoll, Gerry Philpott, added how athletes today transcend sports and how it will be exciting to see who can sustain their ‘power'. Longevity is the key to this year's top grouping. "From Peyton to Federer to Kobe to Brady, these athletes are on the backside of their historic careers yet still command on and off field attention and respect," notes Gerry Philpott, CEO of E-Poll Market Research. "It will be interesting to see if the young stars of today can hold up over the years like these pros. "Social media and endorsement deals are definitely playing bigger roles for both newcomers and returnees of this list." Sportfolio's Power 100 has made it clear that athlete power and influence is going well beyond the playing surface, and that tennis is at the forefront of this cultural shift.

Mallory Burdette chooses Dunlop GREENVILLE, SC — Dunlop today announced it has signed rising American star and former NCAA champion Mallory Burdette to a multi-year agreement. Burdette selected the new Biomimetic M3.0 tennis racquet, which she used to qualify and then reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. She defeated Top 30 player Tamira Paszek in the 2nd round prior to falling to world #15 Maria Kirilenko in a thrilling three-set match that lasted nearly 3 hours. Burdette has a powerful baseline game, but also likes to move forward to the net where she has a deft touch from her championship years playing doubles at Stanford. “The Biomimetic M3.0 racquet suits my game; it has fantastic control, and I’m still able to get the power and depth I need to play my game at the highest level.”

Forgetting to change tension on the crosses. Especially in tournaments or when you are rushed, you could forget to lower or raise the tension on the crosses. To avoid this, when starting the mains, clip or attach something to the first cross to remind you (photo 1). You can tape on something like this Dampener or just put a piece of tape over the hole. This is important if you are stringing multiple racquets so all have the same tension on the crosses. Even if you go back and take the tension off and restring at the correct tension the string bed will be tighter.

FIG1

Tighter Knots FIG2

FIG3

Some of the frames have knot holes a long distance from the last string. The longer the distance outside the frame, the more tension is lost. To avoid this, you can sometimes change the pattern by stringing the last string then going back and stringing the second to last string last. (photo 2, 3, 4)

FIG4

Tight Knots on Polyester Getting a tight knot without loosing tension is difficult, especially with a thick polyester string. If you pull the string through the hole with a starting clamp before you tie the knot, it puts a bend in the string so it lies against the frame better (photo 5, 6, 7 ).

GOSEN Strings have been conducting workshops in Asia and have developed their own stringing method. It is used in all the tournaments they string at. It has been developed to string tennis rackets without stress on the racket. There are close to 1,500 HARIBITO stringers in Japan and GOSEN has been the number one string manufacturer there for years. A HARIBITO gathering, an opportunity to polish international-class techniques For improvements in the techniques of racket stringers and sharing of their knowledge, GOSEN hold HARIBITO (literary means racket stringers) seminars and gatherings throughout Japan. Seminar instructors are first-rate professional stringers representing Japan. The instructors logically explain stringing methods not only for GOSEN's rackets but also for other manufacturers' rackets. Besides, GOSEN have been making progress in the research monitoring data on repulsive power variation of strings resulting from the deformation of rackets. The outcome of the research is provided to racket stringers attending the above seminars for their technical improvements.

HARIBITO techniques have been trusted worldwide

GOSEN act as an official stringer for many international and domestic tournaments. In order to establish a system that makes no difference in tension among all team stringers, GOSEN have developed an assured stringing method. Each stringer acquires this unique stringing technique accepted by professional players and offers it to amateur players at HARIBITO shops throught the country. We are proud of the stringing techniques by HARIBITO which has established credibility in the world.

23

In the GOSEN Method there are no around the world techniques. Everything is strung from where the main strings end. The biggest difference is when the strings finish at the bottom of the racquet head and you string with two knots, which we will explain in this article.

In photo 1, the racquet mains are strung normally, installing all 16 mains and clamp off the short side. We will skip 2 holes going up after the last main to start the crosses. On this racquet it will be the forth main. On the short side you have to add enough string for the bottom three crosses.

TECHNIQUE

FIG 1

FIG 2 In photo 2, after you have clamped off the short side, then string the crosses from the forth up.

In photo 3, String the crosses up to the top of the frame. You can either finish or clamp off on the forth or fifth cross string at the top. Then you can finish off the rest of the crosses at the bottom and top.

FIG 3

This is simular to stringing a badminton racquet at high tension. As a badminton frame is very light and fragile, this method allows it to be strung at high tensions without breaking or bending the frame. We have found this method very good for Babolat Pure Drive and Aero Pro Drive frames. When you take the racket out of the machine, it should come out easily and be the same shape and size as when it was put in. When the racquet finishes at the top and is four knots, you can string the same way, from the bottom up. With two knots finishing at the top you string from the forth string down to the bottom forth string, then you can finish the top three and bottom three. Next issue we will show the box method used by most stringers on the tour.
