F O REST HILLS RESID EN C E Dallas , Texa s A rch i tect: Chad Dors ey Des ign
This property, filled with giant Pecan trees, showcases a petite Tudor that is about to transform into a Spanish home. The clients wanted the landscape to speak to their travels over the years and to the Dallas landscape they call home. The front yard features the “Dallas” landscape: an evergreen hedge, large rectangular lawn, and evergreen groundcover. The new, elongated entrance features the “Mexico” landscape: lush tropical plants, brick and tile, and an antique water feature. The pool courtyard features the “Italy” landscape: a long pool surrounded by gravel and low-water plants that make the garden beds bright and full.

H ANDL EY DRIVE RESI D EN C E Dallas , Texa s A rch i tect: Dom ite aux Arc hite c ts, P LLC
Perched upon a hill in the historic Bishop Arts District of Dallas, sits the Handley Drive Residence. The clients wanted a modern home lifted above the tree line with a picturesque view of downtown Dallas. The elongated, curved pool sits away from the home with an ipe boardwalk placed inbetween. The boardwalk extends into the landscape, creating a view through an island of lush planting and trees, and ending with sculpture chosen by the clients. Intimate sitting areas engulfed in planting and trees and mown walking paths through zoysia grass create an outdoor oasis fit for the clients’ lifestyle.

DELOACHE RESIDEN C E Dallas , Texa s A rch i tect: Chad Dors ey Des ign
This monumental French-Mediterranean estate brings together a landscape design that is functional for the family and respects the design and history of the architecture. This design also speaks to the abundance of courtyards, making each space elegant and useful. The entry courtyard was elongated to make it feel proportional to the scale of the house. Into the backyard, a French-inspired pool stretches into the lawn and leads the eye to a grand fireplace at the end. At the back of the property, recreational spaces are nestled into rich planting and neighboring trees create shade.

B E R RY RESIDENCE Fort Worth , Texa s A rch i tect: R andy Gide on, Arc hite ct
Nestled within the Westover Hills neighborhood, our clients tore down the home they raised their family in and decided to rebuild on the same lot. The new house footprint is almost double in size compared to their original home and a lot of the existing elements are being cleaned up and kept; like the 60’ long pool, basketball court, and pool pavilion. This lot has some serious grade change, dropping almost 9’ from the covered patio to the pool deck. Our team was able to solve this challenge by providing landing points and a large outdoor patio for entertaining, making this drop more graceful and steady.

The Cool School Neighborhood Park program began in 2016, aiming to alleviate “park deserts” among Dallas neighborhoods by opening school parks to the community during after-school hours. This multi-phase project is nearing the end of Phase 1, with a goal of about 20 schools per phase. For the past several months and with a limited budget, our design team has been working with each school’s Green Team, a group of teachers that speak on behalf of the school, to iron out the designs for a new playground and outdoor classroom.

With a clear mission to ‘cool’ the City of Dallas and connect its residents to parks, the Cool Schools program is underway city-wide with 18 school yards completed. Parks in Dallas provide 29 percent tree cover, whereas our school yards provide only 7 percent, contributing to an even greater problem of youth avoiding the outdoors and less time for free play. Additionally, 40 percent of Dallas residents live in a Park Desert, thus making a student’s life in both school and home even that much more disconnected from nature.

COMMUNITY PLACEMAKING
OUTDOOR LEARNING
TREE PLANTING PLAY
Before the Cool Schools program, school yards were flat open grass fields with no shade, and multiple physical barriers to prevent the surrounding community from entering. Now that Dallas ISD and Dallas Parks Department joint use agreements are in place, the my team and the non-profit partners created a tool kit of 4 key components. The 4 key components are broken down into custom elements that are chosen by the community and the school. Outdoor Learning is comprised of a gathering space, laboratory, and social emotional area. Community placemaking is comprised of a walking trail, art, picnic tables, and other amenities. Play is comprised of climbing, fitness, balance, sliding, sensory development, and collaboration. Each school receives a range of 75-200 trees, ranging in species, that are planted and maintained by the Texas Trees Foundation.

MARKHAM HILL HOTEL

Faye t tev i l l e, A r ka ns a s A rchitec t: BOKA Powe ll
The Pratt Place Inn (soon to be renamed Markham Hill Hotel) has been a staple among the Fayetteville community. The inn sits on top of a hill and nestled in the woods, about a mile west of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The Pratt Place Inn and its accompanying Event Barn has served the region as one of the top wedding venues in the state. The clients are looking to expand by adding more hotel rooms, providing luxury outdoor hang-out spots, and renovating the Pratt Place Inn and the Event Barn. We are currently in the design development phase, with hopes of construction beginning in 2023.

The client requested that pockets of space be designed throughout the pool and hangout area. Individual spas and fire pit areas can be rented out by guests, providing another stream of revenue. The next goal was to fill these spaces with trees and hedges, to increase the “enclosure” feel. These pockets of spaces are capstoned on each side with long expanses of lawn and meadow planting. Our team wanted to preserve as much existing landscape and trees as possible.

STATION RIDGE RANCH

Go d l ey, Texa s A rchitec t: Mic hael G. Im b e r, A rch i te ct s
This classical Mediterranean-Texan ranch sits at the peak of a hill deep within the Blackland Prairie. The ranch, which will become the clients’ full-time residence, uses native stone and Roman brick to compliment the surrounding landscape. Inside the compound walls, rich and luscious perennials and trees provide an oasis within the Texas countryside. Extensive custom details and thorough construction documents are currently in progress with construction of the ranch beginning in the summer of 2022.

This compound was designed to look as if it had been here for generations, sourcing local materials and paying homage to the Blackland Prairie ecoregion. The view above shows how close the clients want to be able to interact with the surrounding landsape. And once construction has wrapped up, our team will plan to restore the prairie as best we can. This will be the clients’ full-time residence, so it was important to design every outdoor space to last as long as possible, especially as more and more generations begin to call this place “home”.
