Designed to save lives We at Jalo Helsinki want people to fall in love with their fire safety products and let these essential everyday objects find their way into as many homes as possible. Safety can be beautiful. A beautiful fire safety product has no need to be hidden out of sight. A subtle yet stylish piece can be as good in attracting admiring eyes as the design sofa in your living room. We invited top designers to imagine with us what fire safety can look like. Each designer has given their own unique vision and the result is delicious and rich in choices. We are not satisfied with just making fire safety more attractive-looking, but we also want to enhance its usability. Installing Jalo Helsinki products takes mere seconds with no need for screws or a power drill. With our smoke alarms there are no tiny push buttons, but the whole external casing acts as a press switch for silencing false alarms and testing the performance of the product. Jalo Helsinki Team

be Beautiful

”There is very little variety in smoke alarms, even though every household should have them. Lento is an entirely new kind of smoke alarm. Its organic design is in an interesting dialogue with the traditional, even dull, technical device. It is perfect for brightening up a nursery or as a vibrant touch in the decor of a sleek and modern home.” Paola Suhonen, Designer

Harri Koskinen

During his design process, Harri Koskinen acquaints himself with the subject matter in many different ways. The sleek and subtle Kupu was born after many phases. In his work, Koskinen utilizes the client’s know-how while discussing, freely associating, sketching and building models. What are some things you can only experience in Finland? Finland is characterized by ”fair play” and everyman’s rights that allow everyone to, for example, go hiking in the forest and pick berries and mushrooms. In Finland, you can have a nice cup of coffee at the market square in good company.

Paola suhonen

What place best embodies the essence of Finland? The Hakaniemi Market Square in Helsinki. Who are some of the Finns you look up to? Those who cultivate the land and produce organic food.

Paola Suhonen lives for her work and thus does not draw a distinction between her work and leisure. Her ideas stem from life moments and experiences. When Suhonen begins work on a project, she lets her thoughts, ideas and sense of aesthetics flow freely. Finally, the various elements are combined in a form that serves its purpose. This is also how Lento was born.

What do you dream of? Spare time during the week.

What are some things you can only experience in Finland? There is no other place where nature is such an integral part of everyday life. Finns are a people of nature in a beautiful and fierce way, modern backwoodsmen of sorts.

If your home was on fire, what one thing would you take with you? My sketch book.

What place best embodies the essence of Helsinki? I love Helsinki’s profound connection with the sea, the Töölönlahti Bay and the cafés and bars of Kallio. In Kallio, the sombre

aesthetics of Kaurismäki’s films is combined with the grand Jugendstil architecture. Who are some of the Finns you look up to? Aki Kaurismäki, film director; Alvar Aalto, architect; Armi Ratia, founder of Marimekko; Tapio Wirkkala, designer; and Ville Valo, HIM’s vocalist. They have all followed their own individual paths. What do you dream of? A love bigger than life itself. If your home was on fire, what one thing would you take with you? It is not a thing as such, but a living being and the most loved one of all: my mixed-breed dog, Affe.
