AIRMEDIC CONCEPT AIRLANDER HYBRID VEHICLE This project was collaborated with Airlander company, which produces the world largest hybrid air vehicles. Our task was to design a concept idea for the new Airlander 10 airship.

OBJECTIVE TITLE PAGE INFOIDEA CONCEPT

PROJECT CONCEPT All over the world there are problems with access to vaccinations and medical resources due to remote locations and lack of infrastructure. By combining the capabilities of large organisations and the long endurance flight of the Airlander, Airmedic will provide a refrigerated shipping service to areas struggling with cold chain distribution. The goal is to reduce supply issues by loitering at strategic locations and deploying delivery drones containing stock to clinics and hospitals.

CONCEPT IDEA TITLE PAGE INFO COMPARISON

FAST AND EASY ACCESS Air delivery is fast and efficient with no traffic. Roads in rural areas can be in a bad condition, which causes extra costs in tyre consumption and in road maintenance fees.

DEVELOPMENT TITLE PAGE INFO AIRSHIP

FLYING MEDICAL SUPPLIES The Airlander 10 can loiter on the sky for five days without landing, therefore the airship was applied with a charging drone station which allows the drones to fly in and out in a continuous cycle as well as keeping the batteries fully charged. A medical supply storage module was designed to be easily attachable for a rapid reload.

DEVELOPMENT TITLE PAGE INFOLAYOUT INTERIOR

FULLY AUTONOMOUS STORAGE SYSTEM The Airlander has a fully autonomous warehouse system inside, which loads the parcels into the drones for deliveries, as well as moves the drones on to the appropriate shelf charging units after the delivery services.

DEVELOPMENT TITLE PAGE INFO DRONE FEATURES

The propels turn into different angles to provide a better turning ability. The propel noise is only 60dB.

Locking mechanism for attaching the parcel to the drone.

Stereo vision sensor for detecting obstacles.

Adjustable legs for changing the height of the drone in case of larger packages.

REFINING IDEAS TITLE PAGE INFOPROCESS DELIVERY Drones return from the hospitals back to the Airlander to get charged and receive a new package for a new delivery.

Drones fly on to the conveyor belt where they are being scanned for any possible damage. The belt will take the drone to appropriate location.

The robot arm picks the drone from the belt.

The charging platform opens to give the robot easy access to lift the fully charged drone.

The storage units have an integrated wireless charging pads to perform a fast and efficient charging.

The robot takes the drone to a free storage unit to wait for it’s next delivery.

The drone will be placed on top of the parcel and the parcel attaches to the drone.

The drone receives the location for the delivery with GPS.

Drone lands on the roof of the hospital and delivers the parcel to the Airmedic drop box.

DEVELOPMENT TITLE DELIVERY PAGE INFOSTATION

RESEARCH TITLE PAGE INFO INSPIRATION

DEVELOPMENT TITLE PAGE INFOPLANNING CONCEPT PROJECT PLANNING AND PROBLEM SOLVING Different concept ideas were explored on paper and in CAD by creating quick 3D models. The lamp required different types of engineering analysis to ensure that the base would support the lamp in all different orientations. The ball and swivel joints also had to be secured with a right amount of friction to enable the lamp to function correctly.

DEVELOPMENT TITLE PAGE INFO DESIGN PROCESS

FLEXIBLE SOLUTION BY OLAMP The OLamp concept was created when the research pointed out that the majority of office workers suffer from head aches, which have been caused by bad lighting. Too harsh and bright or too dim lights can cause head aches or even lead to a migraine. These are common problems which can be solved by using appropriate lighting. The OLamp has a dimmable COB LED which ensures a comfortable light output. The lamp is also fully adjustable as it has three rotational pivot points that enables the lamp to be shaped into the required position.

PACKAGING RE-DESIGN Around christmas time companies tend to package their products into oversized gift boxes, which are discarded right after opening. The project brief was to re-design a more echological christmas packaging for an existing product.

05

STARTING POINT TITLE PAGE INFOPRODUCT EXISTING

WASTED SPACE PROBLEM The original gift box had a tin exterior with a plastic insert that held the lip balms in place. However, the box had a large amount of empty space, which should be minimised. Smaller packaging would ease the product transportation and reduce shipping costs.

DEVELOPMENT TITLE PAGE INFO PROTOTYPING PHYSICAL MODELLING AND GRAPHICAL LAYOUT The key element for the design was to have the content visible to the customer, aiding to mitigate the need to open packages in stores. Physical model was created to gain an understanding of how different graphics would look on the cardboard, as well as to see the product in real life.

FINAL PRODUCT TITLE PACKAGING PAGE INFO RENDER

MINIMAL DESIGN The new packaging is smaller in size, meaning that there is no wasted space inside. The packaging uses recycled cardboard with a minimal amount of ink to save money in production and to be more eco friendly, without sacrificing in the quirky appearance of the box.

3D PRINTED COMPUTER MOUSE The project objective was to design an ergonomic computer mouse, which would be prototyped by using 3D printing. The final model should be injection mouldable for mass production.

DEVELOPMENT TITLE PROTOTYPING PAGE INFO

ERGONOMICS AND SHAPE EXPLORATION Multiple sketches were produced to explore different ideas and ergonomic shapes. Some of these ideas were later on prototyped by using blue foam.

DEVELOPMENT TITLE 3D MODELLING PAGE INFO Blue foam models were 3D scanned and the CAD model was built around the mesh.

The 3D CAD model was sculpted into organic shape and divided into different components.

INJECTION MOULDABLE DESIGN WITH OVER MOULDS The design consists from five different body parts, which were carefully designed around the circuit board. The circuit board was taken from an existing mouse and it was reverse engineered in CAD. The top and side panels were applied with an over moulded rubber like texture for more luxurious feel.

All of the individual components were modified for specific functions and to attach each others by using a push fitting or screws.

TITLE FINAL PROTOTYPE 3D PRINTED PAGE INFO MODEL

DIFFERENT TEXTURES The final prototype was 3D printed from the fullcure vero black material which gives the top surfaces a glossy finish. The top and side panels were rigid parts with a rubber like coating on the external surfaces.

CONCEPT SELECTION TITLE PAGE INFO| PROTOTYPING IDEATION

PROOF OF PRINCIPLE MODELS AND TESTING The design process started by sketching ideas and then producing physical models for testing. Modelling process included 3D printing, laser cutting, milling machining and use of different hand tools. Tests were complete on different aspects such as, noise attenuation, air flow efficiency, wind noise and water/condensation extraction.

CHOSEN CONCEPT TITLE PAGE INFOPRINCIPLE WORKING

SOUND ATTENUATION WITH HELMHOLTZ CAVITIES The design uses multiple Helmholtz resonators to attenuate frequencies between the range of 600 and 3000Hz. Traffic sound and most emergency vehicle noises fall into this range. However, it is challenging to tune the cavities to attenuate these frequencies effectively in such a broad frequency range.

DEVELOPMENT AIR FLOW ANALYSIS

AIR FLOW ANALYSIS INSIDE THE STRUCTURE Multiple different wind pressures were used for more accurate results. The CFD data was then used to optimise the structure, aiming to have a minimal resistance and turbulence for the air flow whilst reducing a significant amount of noise.

DEVELOPMENT DEFINING IDEAS CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT Multiple prototypes were produced to enhance and improve the design. Models were first created in CAD and then analysed in CFD software. Optimised ideas were then prototyped physically and run through a series of different tests. Appearance models were also created to gain a deeper understanding of the usability, installment process and appearance of the product.

REFINEMENT TITLE PAGE INFO MANUFACTURING

INJECTION MOULDING CONSIDERATIONS The product was designed to be fully injection mouldable with three simple pull out moulds to keep the manufacturing cost as low as possible. All the design considerations for injection moulding were followed to ensure that no sink marks, warping or other faults would occur.
