Turf Talk

Brad Seiler, GCSAA Class A

As the saying goes, “be careful what you wish for”. It is safe to say we got what we wished for. It is hot and the grass is growing. The course will be closed July 10th through July 30th. We will be opening back up on Monday July 31st for a full day of tee times.

Projects on Shadow Hawk should be completed by the end of the month when we re-open. These include the bridge work on #7 and #17, and the SOX lake bank restoration projects on #5 and #17.

During the closure we have a lot going on. Starting with greens, we will be core aerifying them using 5/8” tines the first week of our closure, then coming behind that a week later we will be Dry-Jecting them, which instead of pulling cores, it is basically injecting sand into the greens. As mentioned in a course update, there is a noticeable organic layer in the upper 3-4 inches that is keeping the roots shallow and up near the surface. We hope to remove a large percentage of this organic layer and add sand channels allowing the roots to move downward and strengthen giving us a healthier more sustainable turf. We will also be verti-cutting and core aerifying fairways, tees, collars, and approaches.

Our nutritional, soil, and PGR programs will continue during this process. We will be adding wetting agents in with our tee and fairway sprays to help with hydration during the stressors of summer weather. Also, a high emphasis on our core course details will be in full effect so that when we re-open, we are caught up on the many areas that we simply have not been able to maintain to the standard we expect.

There are a few other projects that we hope to have completed during this closure time, including landscape enhancements to the Shadow Hawk entrance gate, landscape enhancements to select areas on the entrance road drive around the practice areas and #1, landscape enhancements to the long skinny parking lot island, and finally the installation of a new flagpole monument with landscape enhancements to that entire island up to around the flagpole.

On behalf of myself and our Agronomy team, we thank you for your patience and continued support.
