rowing up on the shores of Georgian Bay, our summer house rules included only this: no television unless it’s raining. Real or filtered through my semi-reliable childhood lens, I remember spending nearly every waking hour in the water, taking the occasional break to bike up to the old Craigleith General Store for gobstoppers and liquorice babies. Waterlogged and sun-drenched, my brothers and I would hunt for painted turtles in the wet ditches that lined our dirt road before dinner. We were outside from dawn to dusk and only changed out of our swimsuits when it was time for bed. It’s no wonder that so many of us choose to spend our most precious summer vacation days on the water—it reminds us of simpler times. As we collectively hit the “leave virtual meeting” button for the last time and hear the satisfying click of our laptops closing, summer looms large ahead of us. Longer days, warmer weather and more free time are just a few of the things we have to look forward to. With those thoughts in mind, in this issue we’re covering

everything from geological sea stacks to lakeside music festivals and even the best trails for family bike rides. You may discover a hobby to fill your time, an itinerary for the perfect weekend getaway or the motivation to go on more adventures. Many aspects of our lives are still filled with uncertainty right now, but one thing’s undeniable—being close to water in any form is arguably the purest regression to our own childhoods, allowing us to access less complicated versions of ourselves. Its summer on the Escarpment and fleeting as this season may be, let’s make it one to remember!

Towering over the shining waters of Lake Huron, two imposing stone pillars stand tall against the lush shoreline. Legend has it they are the petrified bodies of two star-crossed lovers, frozen in time by the island’s ‘lesser devil’ Little Spirit.

Formed by the retreating of massive, continent-size glaciers which stood nearly s

two miles high, the Great Lakes are relatively young in geological terms. Still, it’s hard to believe that the rocks that we walk over on the northern Bruce Peninsula are up to

450 million years old. Devil’s Monument and Flowerpot Island, in the spectacular Fathom Five National Marine Park, are home to several towering sea stacks, a reminder of this land’s prehistoric beginnings. Slowly etched over years of exposure, these spectacular pillars formed as horizontally-bedded sedimentary rocks were carved into arches by waves pounding at the cracks in the stone, gradually wearing away the softer lower limestone from the harder dolomite top—once the arches collapsed, just the isolated stacks remain. The resulting shape resembles a giant flowerpot. In fact, there were originally three stacks on Flowerpot Island, but one fell due to natural erosion in 1903. While early sailors likened the structures on Flowerpot Island to ancient Roman wine bottles, there is another myth behind the stacks—a native legend, not unlike William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, tells the illfated story of two lovers from opposing tribes. Shining Rainbow, a princess of the Ottawa tribe, and Bounding Deer, a prince of the

Chippewa tribe, hid their affections from the elders. Knowing that neither family would approve of such a union, they chose to elope. Under a full moon the pair set off from the shores of the peninsula but were soon tracked and pursued by members of their tribes. In a desperate attempt to be free, the lovers pointed their canoe toward Manitoueses, a feared but sacred Island believed to be inhabited by ‘lesser devils’, including the dreaded Little Spirit. As their bow touched the shore, waves rose and billowed, followed by a deafening crash. Little Spirit had lay claim to the absconding lovers, petrifying them in rock and stone pillars on the shoreline. The passage of time and exposure have gradually weathered the stacks, but if you look closely at the large flowerpot you might still see the face of Bounding Deer, lost prince of the Chippewa. Fathom Five National Marine Park is packed with history, legends and lore, harbouring nearly two dozen shipwrecks— the limestone and shoal-lined channels are a graveyard to double-decked steamers and two-masted schooners dating back to 1867. In short; a scuba diver’s dream. But it’s the towering cliffs, unique limestone rock formations, caves, forests, glens and lighthouses all surrounded by crystal clear water that are perhaps the best attractions on the Peninsula. See also: a hiker’s dream. Located 6.5 km from the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, access to Flowerpot Island is via water and there are several private tour companies that run glass-bottom boat sailing tours from Tobermory. Once on the island there are two main hiking routes: Loop Trail and Marl Trail. The Loop Trail is the main thoroughfare and takes you past both flowerpots, island caves, limestone swimming ledges and the Flowerpot Island lighthouse which dates back to 1897. Its rectangular steel tower stands 88 feet tall and sits perched atop the rocky cliffs of Castle Bluff. Before it was decommissioned, its light was visible for just over 22 km. The lighthouse was de-staffed after the 1987 season, and the buildings sat vacant until Friends of Fathom Five, concerned about the deteriorating state of the structures, reached an agreement with

it boasts incredible stargazing. Hidden in the craggy cliffs along the north-eastern shore of the Bruce Peninsula, erosion has carved the soft limestone like a spoon, leaving magnificent caverns and caves including Cave Point, Indian Head Cove and the famed Grotto. Accessible from the water or via the Georgian Bay Trail or Marr Lake Trail, the interior of the Grotto is an open cavity filled with remarkably clear, turquoise waters. Here, great blocks of dolomite, undercut by waves, have plummeted from the cliffs above and can be clearly seen below the surface. Inside the cavern the water appears iridescent thanks to light emanating from an underwater tunnel. The Grotto and Indian Head Cove are two of the top tourism attractions in Ontario, and online advanced reserved parking is required. Water and weather continue to play a role in shaping the

s

the Coast Guard under which they were able to begin restoration work in 1996. A Lightkeeper’s Host Program was started in 1998 that allows volunteers to live at the station while performing minor maintenance and serving as site interpreters for visitors. Continue hiking the loop trail towards the inner portion of the island, and the terrain becomes more rugged. Eventually you’ll end where you began; the docks at Beachy Cove. The Marl Trail, described as moderate level hiking, is a 1.2km out and back trail that leads down to the north-western coast past the campground—camping is permitted on Flowerpot (if you manage to snag a campsite before they’re fully booked). Staying overnight lets you explore the island with fewer people, so when the last boat leaves around 6 pm, you’ll have the island to yourself and because the island is a designated dark sky preserve, void of light pollution

“EROSION HAS CARVED THE SOFT LIMESTONE LIKE A SPOON, LEAVING MAGNIFICENT CAVERNS AND CAVES.” Escarpment as rainwater, waves and snow melt penetrate the porous dolostone to create karst features like caves, crevices and yes, more sea stacks. Nowhere is this more prevalent than on the north-eastern shores of Bruce Peninsula. Devil’s Monument, a sea stack formed 5,500 years ago by glacial Lake Nipissing, is directly on the Bruce Trail, accessible from the end of Cape Chin North Road. Also known as the Devil’s Pulpit, the hike to the Monument is only about a kilometre but the trail is steep, rocky and usually quite slippery. This section of the Bruce Trail arguably boasts the most incredibly breathtaking views over the outcropping of limestone and shale cliffs that are suspended high above Georgian Bay. The largest land-based flowerpot on the Bruce, Devil’s Monument stands 14 metres tall and because freshwater stacks are more hospitable to vegetation than ocean sea stacks, it has sprouted impressive displays of pines, shrubs and grasses. Just beyond the Monument lookout is an iron staircase leading to its base. Follow the path and you’ll soon find yourself on a pristine pebble beach, 32

surrounded by the crystal-clear turquoise Bay waters reminiscent of the Caribbean. You may want to stay here a while. If you do manage to tear yourself away from the water’s edge, head back up the staircase and continue the loop north for more incredible views—this hike has often been described as “the most spectacular, the most varied, and the most beautiful section of the entire Bruce Trail.” The craggy shorelines of Georgian Bay and the islands of Fathom Five National Marine Park are protected within the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, and are considered one of the planet’s natural wonders. Unsurprisingly the uniqueness of the landscape attracts thousands of visitors each year and while the natural elements continue to play a role in changing the landscape of the Escarpment, humans should not. Please help keep these precious natural wonders safe so that future generations can hike, camp, swim and learn about the incredible history of the northern Bruce Peninsula. E

This significant hiatus allowed me to test the old adage, and I am happy to report, after digging the old Norco out, that you truly do never forget how to ride a bike. It’s like magic. Swing a leg over, settle into the saddle, and ancient muscle memory kicks in. You pick up some speed and immediately revert to a state of childlike euphoria. It’s the second best feeling in the world. The best feeling in the world, coincidentally, also involves cycling. It’s a feeling I couldn’t have achieved without that decadelong offspring collecting hiatus. Because as sweet as cresting a hill in low gear then absolutely bombing down the other side is, it’s nothing compared to watching your kid learn to ride a bike. From the first turn of the pedal, expressions of wonder, pride, and pure glee light up the face under that cute little bike helmet. It’s infectious, and chronic. My oldest got started with training wheels two years ago and I’m still beaming. To help you capture some of this contagious joy, I’ve put together a short list of some of the best rides around for kids

and kids at heart. In Owen Sound, the hub for outdoor family activities has always been Harrison Park, and it is the ideal location to bring your little Louis Garneau. The setting is beautiful, it’s easily accessible with parking areas situated at multiple trail heads, and the trails themselves run the gamut from pavement, to hard packed gravel, to gnarly root covered hillsides. Maybe wait ‘til the training wheels are off for that last type. Best of all there’s no shortage of aprescycle activities. Feed the birds, feed your ravenous little rider, then spend some time at one of three playgrounds. Another notable route in town is Stoney Orchard Park Trail, a short gravel loop atop the east side escarpment which offers a stunning view across Georgian Bay. A picnic at nearby Timber McArthur Park is a great way to cap off a ride through the woods. If your kiddo is more X Games than Tour de France, Shouldice Park at the Shallow Lake Community Centre is well worth the drive. With a wooden freeride circuit, a half pipe, ramps, and a pump track, this park is completely kitted out for anything on wheels, while still being aimed squarely

Rediscover Responsibly

Protect our environment.

Do not trespass.

Do not litter. Always clean up after yourselves. Pack out what you bring in, including food packaging, scraps and pet waste.

Be prepared. Photography Safety:

“Don't do it for the 'gram.”

Please respect public and private landowners. It’s a privilege to explore the area and trails. Ensure you obey all signs and boundaries, and follow proper trail etiquette.

Before you head out, check all appropriate websites and social media. Call businesses and locations ahead of time, as they may be closed or offering reduced services or hours. Book any reservations well in advance.

Your safety is more important than any picture you could take. Photography near dangerous locations such as cliff edges, moving water, crevices/caves, busy roads /roadways or on private property such as farmland, could result in serious injuries or accidents. Don’t let the shot be the most important thing when rediscovering Grey.

Respect nature, agriculture, & wildlife. Avoid disturbing the natural habitat, farmland or crops, and refrain from feeding any wildlife you encounter. Do not approach or touch farm animals.

With over 30 access points, parking along the route, and many shops and restaurants in Collingwood, Thornbury and Meaford, you can cycle this trail dozens of times and never have the same experience twice. Hard packed from start to finish, with no significant slopes, riders of all ages and skill levels are right at home on the Georgian Trail. For something a bit shorter, and a bit more rugged, hop on the George Christie Nature Trails. This network of trails winds through mixed growth woodland, backs onto a golf course, and features a lovely view of the nearby ski slopes. Access the trails either from parking on the 11th line off Mountain Road, or by cycling three kilometres from The Georgian Trail terminus at Harbourview Park in Collingwood. back out there, why not choose to support our local economy and invest in some good old fashioned close-to-home adventures. Whether you’re in the mood to hike, paddle or bike, there are a ton of activities and attractions to keep you busy from morning to night right here, in the heart of the Escarpment. “I’ve never actually walked the trails at Blue Mountain before this summer because I’ve always been too afraid of getting lost,” laughs Margaret Owens of Wasaga Beach. “My girlfriends and I have just planned a hike and if we get tired, we can always catch the gondola down—or up for that matter! It’s the view that counts, and the top of the Escarpment is breathtaking. Getting our heart rates up is a bonus.” Blue Mountain Resort has introduced the Explore Park, which features the OpenAir Gondola, the on-mountain trail network of expanded hiking trails (over 30 kilometres!) and cross-country biking trails. The Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster, Wind Rider Triple Zips and Mountaintop Segway Tours are all included in Blue’s Adventure Park attractions. Guests can ride, zip and putt all day long as well as “level up” their play with an Add-On Adventure like Timber Challenge High Ropes or Woodlot Low Ropes. “When we first moved here nine years ago we loved taking the kids to Blue,” says Shannon Michaels who relocated to Collingwood when her children were four and five years-old. “Now that the boys are a little older they still love our twice a summer trips to Blue. From the ropes courses, to rock climbing to paddling on the Mill Pond, we are on the go from sun-up to sun-down. This summer we’re looking forward to trying out the zip line!” Speaking of dawn to dusk fun, with unlimited daily access to select summer attractions including Wind Rider Triple Zips (woohoo!), Rock-Climbing Wall, and more, Play All Day passes start at just $39 and are only sold online in advance of your visit. “A return to summer is important for our teams and our community but also for our guests,” says Tara Lovell Manager 44

Public Relations for Blue Mountain Resort. “Families are in desperate need of a reprieve. Blue Mountain has always been a place for families to make memories together while being outdoors; something people need now more than ever.” There is a reason why many of us are born with an inherent desire to travel. We seek adventure, yes, but what we really love is discovery and connection. After spending so much time indoors as of late, returning to a place like Blue Mountain can do us a world of good. “I have fond memories of spending my summers at Blue’s water park back in the 1980’s,” says Ben Wood, who was born and raised in Collingwood. “The original slide-ride was my absolute favourite, but the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster is an amazing upgrade. Whenever my brothers come home to visit we always plan at least a few laps followed by a couple of beers on a patio. It’s amazing how much has changed, but the essence of Blue has stayed the same—it’s all about outdoor summer fun.” While we may seek far-away places for travel-worthy adventures, sometimes those hidden gems are lying just behind our very own backyard. Regardless of whether you’re new to the area or if you’ve lived here for generations, exploring our home-grown attractions reconnects us with our community. And with over a year in managing on-resort capacity, you’re safe in the knowledge that Blue has established protocols to help monitor and control guest visitation, including pre-arrival reservations on all attractions and passes. “We already adapted operations in-response to COVID-19 and guests can expect that physical distancing, masking in required areas and capacity management will all be in place as we return to operations,” says Lovell. “21/22 5x7® and Ikon Passholders and Explore Passholders have access to the Explore Park throughout the summer season. Guests are encouraged to visit bluemountain.ca and plan ahead of their summer visit to Blue.” E

Never afraid to shy away from a new skill or life experience, Joyce Goode learned to fly airplanes at the age of 85. Now, at 97, Joyce is showing no signs of slowing down.

like a delighted, excited leprechaun. She was in a comfortable leisure suit. Sporty shoes and socks. Informal as they come. Being a writer, I like to observe a person of interest and the whole scene before I approach for conversation. I found that her grown up sons and daughter were present. Her older son is the renowned cardiologist of Collingwood, Dr. Goode who keeps many people ticking, including me. Her daughter, a corporate consultant, had come from Alberta. Her younger son, also from afar, is in charge of the sales people across Canada for a commercial lighting company. Joyce bounced around kitchen and sitting areas leaving people to refill their drinks and help themselves to good food snacks. The wine was very good. Towards the end of the party, Joyce sat down on a chair near me, with her glass of rye and water. I asked if it was true that she flew airplanes. “Still do,” she retorted, looking me in the eye, chuckling impishly. With little prompting, she proceeded to entertain me with tales of flying and golfing. She no longer sails or skis, but she sure loves flying. There was no attitude of bragging. It was all sheer joy in the sport. Her talk is peppered with swearing. Definitely unladylike but strikes you as comical rather than vulgar. She doesn’t have to search for words. She’s quick and articulate. I left wanting to know much more about this high-flying feisty babe. The covid year clamped down on us. Joyce came through it unscathed. Before the third surge, Joyce invited us for drinks on her back deck with her younger neighbor couple. Joyce wore a warm jacket and cruise captain’s cap. Daffodils were in bud. Swans swam by on the pond. “How about Canada geese?” I asked. “Any problem with them?” “They don’t dare!” Joyce laughed and swore. “I’ve come out in my night gown, yelling and wielding a broom. They fly off in (expletive) fright. Daffodils are my favourite flower. No geese are going to crap on them.” The couple left and we had private time with Joyce. She claims never to have felt fear in any sport. I thought of my fear of heights and speed. How they had to be conquered or controlled. The sport Joyce excelled at when she grew up in

his area astounds me. Yes, we all love the beauty of the Lake Huron shoreline and the Escarpment with its forests, waterfalls, river, trails, wild life, ski hills, and farms. But most astounding to me is the variety of people in our community. I live on a country property in Beaver Valley. My neighbours are multi generation farmers and new Icelandic sheep farmers, young architects, photographers, landscapers, the Executive Director of Beaver Valley Outreach, a helicopter pilot, small business owner of natural skin care products, retired university professors of education and musicology now developing music and relaxing chairs that help Alzheimer patients, a wrought iron artist, a school bus driver and children of all ages. This is not a community of inactive retirees, yet I want to focus on a 97-yearold woman, Joyce Goode, who officially retired at age 80 and learned to fly small airplanes at age 85. She still flies small planes, but not solo. In the winter before covid struck, I was invited to a Christmas cocktail party at Joyce Goode’s. She lives on her own in an attached house in a new community on Cranberry Trail near Collingwood. Her home backs onto a pond bordering a golf course. That day in December had begun with a snow storm. “Will the party be cancelled?” I asked my companion Norm who has been a longtime friend of Joyce and her late husband. “Never!” he laughed. “With Joyce, the show must go on. This is an annual event. There will be some regulars but you never know whom you’ll meet. Joyce likes to throw people together.” So do I, I thought. I’m going to enjoy this. Only the determined, the foolhardy and close neighbours are likely to show up. Can’t wait to meet Joyce. I had dressed for this. Considering her age, I imagined Joyce would be old school formal. I hauled out a bit of finery I’d worn years ago. Joyce was probably quite elegant. I wore a shiny jacket, lace skirt and faux leopard skin heels. We came out of the blowing snow into Joyce’s house. Joyce greeted us from the top of the entrance steps. “Come in! Come in!” she waved both arms. I had got it wrong! Joyce bounced, chuckled and gestured

Drummondville, Quebec was high-jumping. She also loved to ski jorg; being pulled behind a car with a rope. Until her parents put a stop to it. I learned that her career was in science. She first worked in a research lab with a team studying viruses and vaccines. Especially today in covid times we can understand her excitement at the importance of this work. Eventually she became a microbiologist researching and teaching pathology. This was a woman worth writing about. When I asked her if I could do an article on her, she looked seriously at me, sized me up and consented to an interview. I asked her to write me a bio and I gave her some written questions ahead of time. Hitherto, she had entertained me with amusing anecdotes. How would she respond to serious questions about dealing with life’s conflicts and blows, how she got to be so independent thinking, her advice to others? Would she close the door on solemnity and invasion of her privacy? Joyce showed another side of herself when she sat me down at her long dining table. Her home is immaculate, neat, completely devoid of any clutter. Not a typical old person’s home with souvenirs and photos, books and the newspaper at hand, as in my house. Her decor is white walls and modern furniture with blue cushion accents. She was in command of this meeting, though as usual she looked right into me with her large blue inquisitive eyes. A good-looking woman with a becoming hairdo, wearing a black vest inscribed with ‘Flying Gran’. A gift from one of her many adoring grand kids. Her bio told me her father was a research chemist who had invented an important protective substance for aircraft. Her mother was the home maker. Joyce was a teenager when her family moved from Drummondville to New England. Joyce chose to continue her education at schools in Montreal and Ottawa then to go to McGill University in Montreal. There was no rift with her family. It was Joyce’s independent choice. She moved from arts to science because she likes to discover, find the cause and how things work. She got into exciting research work before and after graduation. “I never minded being one of few women in a class,” she said. “There were a lot of handsome sailors to work with.” Then she married John Goode. “The best-looking engineer at McGill,” she informed me, chuckling. They were moved to Asbestos, Quebec where Joyce’s only work choice was to be wife and mother of three babies born within a year of each other. Engineers were poorly paid in those days after the War so they had to be frugal. Did Joyce get frustrated and depressed? No! “It’s what women did in those days. Raise the kids.” Joyce was never 48

incompetent. And she got along well in the Quebec community. But she did have challenges. Her younger son had serious illnesses which held him back in school. Joyce’s philosophy of raising kids is: don’t push them. But encourage the good stuff. When they need help, pitch in in every way possible. When they were moved to Montreal and the kids were in school, Joyce went back to microbiology work. She worked in hospital, taking specimens for the identification of infections, diagnosing the causes. It was dangerous work as it is for frontline workers today. She also taught pathology. It wasn’t easy after a decade away from the science but Joyce never sought the easy. They were more prosperous when moved to Toronto. They joined the Royal Yacht Club and Joyce learned to sail and race. Although women never took the helm in those days, Joyce did. “If something happens to you when we’re out on the lake,” she told John. “I have to be able to bring the boat in myself.” So, she learned to do that, with only a few incidents of banging into the dock. They took the kids skiing at Blue Mountain, making day trips. As happens, Joyce decided day trips were too much hassle. She wanted to buy a small condo at Cranberry. John didn’t want another property to manage. John was so adamant he called it ‘grounds for divorce’. Joyce considered herself a better negotiator. She bargained to pay half and bought the condo one weekend when John was away on business. He was irate for a very short time. He quickly grew to love having a home in our community and readily agreed to live here when he retired. Joyce never stopped getting into things. She became President of a Probus Club and participated in everything from The Collingwood Cinema Club to Life Long Learning. She became an expert stock market investor. Still is. Some things are too painful to recall or dwell upon. I saw this was so with the death of her husband from lung disease after 60 years of lively, loving marriage. Right after that, when Joyce was 85, she made the decision to learn to fly. And she did. It is her philosophy of ‘get out of yourself ’. When she herself got lung cancer, they removed a quarter of her lung. It was so painful, Joyce wanted to give up. Her doctor urged her to take the further treatment. “It won’t work,” Joyce argued. “You can’t know that if you don’t try it,” her doctor replied. “That made sense to me,” said Joyce. “So, I tried it and it worked.” At 94, she underwent radiation for lymphoma. It worked. As she saw me out Joyce said a most personal thing. “It isn’t easy to live alone.” How I wanted to hug her! But her final remark was vintage Joyce. I had forgotten to ask her birth day. “It’s July 1st,” she laughed. “Couldn’t be better. There’s always a party. And lots of fireworks.” E

f you’re like me, the social restrictions and relentless uncertainty of these pandemic times have left you feeling a shade numb. Thankfully, though, a really profound experience can still blast through those blahs. My breakthrough moment came last September while listening to a string quartet performing Haydn at an outdoor concert on Georgian Bay, at the SweetWater Music Festival. Isn’t it amazing

it amazing how a live musical performance can become so much more than music. At it’s very best, the magical combination of music, musicians and audience creates a life-affirming energy that is indescribable. On that late September evening, in spite of covid, or maybe because of it, this complex and exquisite expression of the human spirit in artistic pursuit suddenly felt overwhelming to me. The musicians’ amazing humanity, their dedication to excellence, their love of creating and sharing beautiful music, stirred up so much gratitude that I was moved to tears. Inspired by the enthusiastic reception of a solo concert by virtuoso violinist Mark Fewer, SweetWater Music Festival was founded in 2003. Under the artistic direction of Mark, and with the support of benefactors Keith and Jean Medley, SweetWater has grown steadily into one of the leading regional music festivals in the country.

Percussionist Aiyun Huang performs the multi-media Hitchock Etudies by Nicole Lizee at the Roxy Theatre in Owen Sound during SweetWater 2018.

Throughout the third weekend in September, SweetWater draws on some of the best musicians from across Canada and around the world for a series of lively concerts, both formal and more intimate, at popular venues in and around Owen Sound and the Municipality of Meaford. But there is more to the SweetWater Music Festival than the exceptional performances—SweetWater also provides community involvement, with mentoring for aspiring musicians throughout Grey/Bruce, workshops for musical students and teachers, and a celebration of skilfully-crafted musical instruments of local luthiers. In 2019, Mark Fewer stepped down and SweetWater welcomed a new Artistic Director Edwin Huizinga. Standing six foot five inches tall, with flaming red hair and beard straight out of Middle-Earth, Edwin has a face so kind that it lights up any room. He is a founding member of the classical ensemble, ACRONYM, a member of a Juno award-winning rock band called The Wooden Sky and has an ongoing 52

collaboration with Grammy award-winning folk guitarist William Coulter, under the name Fire and Grace. Edwin has also composed and performed an award-winning piece for Opera Atelier with worldrenowned soprano Measha Brueggergosman and is commissioned to compose music for the National Arts Centre orchestra in Ottawa. He even performed at the State funeral of Senator John McCain. Soon after Edwin accepted the SweetWater reins the pandemic hit—with gatherings no longer allowed, he managed to salvage live performances in creating the pared-down SweetWater Surreal. For four days in September 2020, musicians performed nearly a dozen socially distanced outdoor concerts; three in private gardens; one at the Coffin Ridge Winery; and the others in public spaces throughout Owen Sound and Meaford. “It was either going to be a surreal festival or a postponed festival,” said Edwin. “In bringing people together and sharing music on a live stage, we were doing something that the world needed so badly.” SweetWater Surreal found a way to make magic while operating under a cloak of Covid restrictions. The musicians played brilliantly and with passion. Founding benefactor Keith Medley later declared, “It was one of the most wonderful SweetWater weekends ever.” Since then, SweetWater Surreal has kept active through online miniconcerts and live-streamed interviews with musicians, and a stunning live jazz concert with Measha Brueggergosman, broadcasted from Owen Sound’s Heartwood Hall. Planning is well underway for the 2021 SweetWater Music Festival September 16-19. Those lifted spirits of last year’s festival lingered long after, and this year, SweetWater promises to surpass itself once again. E SWEETWATER 2021

ine years after Collingwood was incorporated as a town, Trott’s Steam Furniture Factory opened its doors on the corner of Hurontario and Second Street. It was 1867, and in a fortuitous twist of fate, 15 years later Collingwood Dry Dock, Shipbuilding and Foundry Company was established along the active Georgian Bay waterway. Shipbuilding would go onto be the town’s main industry and at the height of production Trott’s supplied everything from the tin cups used by the sailors, to the fabrics and carpeting found in the most luxurious first-class suites. By 1881 proprietor Samuel Trott and his son Henry were able tear down the old wooden building and build what became known as ‘The Trott Block’. By the turn of century, the imposing three-storey, polychrome brick building featured showrooms, workshops, offices, and even a coffin warehouse—as it happens, cabinetmaking transfers well to coffin construction. A bustling hub of commerce for over a century, the building and the business within thrived, spanning six generations of the Trott family. When local dentist turned entrepreneur Dr. John Miller purchased the historic downtown landmark four years ago with his business partner Dr. Sam

looking for a space to hold our meetings and through my time on the Collingwood BIA, I learned that we really don’t have a proper larger-scale events space. I want to invest in Collingwood.” Invest he has, creating and trademarking “The Trott Block” which will lease office, meeting and events spaces. John and Sam hope to welcome patrons and tenants as early as Fall 2022. While there is currently only one tenant on the upper levels, John isn’t fazed; “I’m of the ‘build it and they will come’ attitude,” he laughs. Are you ready to play six degrees of separation? The building’s current tenant is photographer Kirsten Shollig, who’s partner’s grandmother was married Jim Trott—Jim’s great, great grandfather was Trott Furniture founder Samuel Trott. (Kirsten also shot Escarpment Magazine’s 2021 spring fashion editorial, on location at “Studio 74” in the historic Trott building). Willing to go to great lengths to see his concept through to completion, John understands this project requires more than just

Goodman (the pair own Miller Goodman Dentistry on the street level of the building), the upper levels of the ‘Trott building’ as it is now known, were in serious disrepair. “I opened my practice here in 2003 so when the opportunity arose to purchase the building, Sam and I saw it as a chance to revitalize the space and turn it into something amazing for the community.” Despite the fact that the second and third floors were a dusty labyrinth of rooms and open spaces, John recognized its potential and began drafting plans to preserve the building’s core and character while creating a lively and inclusive nucleus for the community. Plans include crafting a communal hub for creative types and entrepreneurs, as well as several gathering spaces for meetings, presentations and celebrations. “Anyone who knows me knows that I love to bring people together and I love parties,” says John. “The third floor of this building would be amazing for weddings and special events. good intentions—getting the building up to code will take a lot of legwork and sizeable financial investment. “I’m not going to spare any expense,” explains John. “When I first opened my practice, I had a vision of how I wanted it to be—I wanted it to be beautiful and upscale. I wanted it to be a place that people wanted to come. I wanted to be proud of it.” John employs the same philosophy with this new venture. “I want the large event space to be big, beautiful, and elegant—a space where people can hold their weddings. I want a second space with amazing audio visuals so we can host presentations, seminars and TED Talks. But I also want to create a more accessible community space that could be used for smaller meetings or even poker nights. So, we’ll really be creating three separate spaces for three distinct groups of the population.” The event spaces can also combine into one large gathering space which will hold up to 200 people. The proposed rooftop patio is the icing on the cake, with a 360 degree view of Downtown Collingwood—what an amazing place to host your next event. A huge proponent of physical fitness and how it relates to our mental health and wellbeing, John has built a private gym in the building. “What I would like to see as the culture of this building is including in some way physical fitness. I would love to use my facility for those who perhaps can’t afford a gym membership or don’t have the 58

wherewithal to take that first step to get involved in fitness.” In fact, John has helped at risk youth get involved in regular fitness routines and has reached out to family health practitioners to make them aware of the space. “Fitness is so essential to our mental health and if this is how I can service our community I’m happy to give back.” Promoting inclusion and acceptance is an ongoing theme in John’s life, career and philanthropic endeavours. Co-founder of the Rainbow Club of South Georgian Bay, John has made it his mission to help local LGBTQ+ youth in our community. He also co-founded the Collingwood Pride festival and recently unveiled the Inclusivity Crosswalk at the intersection of Simcoe Street and Ste. Marie Street. The design by activist/artist Daniel Quasar, includes elements of the Pride flag, but also symbolises marginalized people of colour, those living with AIDS, those no longer living, the Transgender Pride Flag and an arrow pointing to the right to represent forward movement. Over its first 150 plus years, the Trott Building has been home to dozens of businesses including a furniture store, pharmacy, bank, undertakers, and according to John, there was even another dentist’s office located here at one point. Now, in its 154th year, this historic landmark is set to undergo a restoration under the inclusive eye of one of Collingwood’s most community-minded entrepreneurs. Here’s to another 150 years of ‘The Trott Block’. E

Using dynamic, impasto brushwork, Ryan Allen Sobkovich captures vast expanses of Canadian wilderness on his canvas.

At its core, art should make you feel something. That ‘something’ is one of the qualities that separates good from

really good. But then, to cross the line from good to great—well now, an artist must be able to transcend ordinary and propel the viewer into extraordinary and that in my opinion, is a great artist. An artist with staying power—Ryan Allen Sobkovich has it. Influenced by the work of the Group of Seven, Tom Thomson, Claude Monet, and David Hockney,

what I enjoyed; nature and wilderness,” explains Ryan. “And as time went on, things escalated quickly.” Throughout school, Ryan absolutely knew he wanted to support himself as an artist but the reality of that was in question. As a backup, a career in architecture held some appeal but again reality spoke up and the notion of sitting at a desk in an office simply didn’t fit. Thanks to his parents who fostered an entrepreneurial spirit, Ryan’s artistic mind developed alongside a solid business component as well. And, since his work was already selling by the time he entered post-secondary education at Georgian College, he chose to pursue art as his full-time profession even though it would probably mean a meagre living, in a humble cabin, no frills and little extra cash. Fast forward to today. At the tender age of 25, Sobkovich’s artwork has already garnered numerous awards and ‘Best in Show’ honours. His evocative landscapes are in corporation collections in Ontario, public collections in Cairo, Egypt and Belfast, Northern Ireland, and have been in over 45 solo exhibitions and charity auctions around the world. Within the first few hours of its champagne opening, his solo exhibition last fall at

Ryan utilizes free form gestural brushwork with thick applications of bold pigment to express and capture his passion for nature. Taking that thought further, Ryan states, “My goal as an artist is to reconnect the viewer with nature through my artworks. It is important to me that my paintings stimulate emotions, memories and thoughts allowing the viewer to create his/her own narrative.” Growing up in Wasaga Beach, Ryan developed a love of remote outdoors and wilderness on family camping trips to Algonquin and Killbear Provincial Parks. His obvious artistic passion was clearly evident as a young child and when his parents observed their fouryear-old son was drawn to crayons, creating life-like renderings of scenes from their park trips. They recognized this was out of the ordinary and something to be encouraged. When he was nine Ryan’s mother enrolled him in a children’s painting class taught by Michelle Fleming at The Bay School of Art in Collingwood. He was quickly ‘moved up’ to adult classes and after three years, Fleming urged him to put a few paintings in a show at the L.E. Shore Memorial Library in Thornbury. A fellow student bought one of Ryan’s Killbear Park paintings. That student who recognized the twelve-year-old’s talent, turned out to be a serious collector. “It was natural for me to paint

me to experiment with my style. To decipher what I love in other artists’ work, even if it’s just one brush stroke, is a way to learn and to evolve my work.” To that end Ryan demonstrated to me how he uses his brush like a baton to manipulate a mountain of paint on and around his canvas. “Creation is driving the abstraction and whatever my paint brush decides to do for fun.” He knows this ‘natural abstraction’ as he refers to it will continue to happen. But it mustn’t be forced. He smiles, “I don’t know where my work will be in 40 years.” A confident, business savvy person with a solid belief in his own marketing skills, Ryan has strong opinions. Regarding education, he believes more emphasis needs to be placed on the commercial side of being an artist. “The system needs to incorporate

Spurred by a hunger to keep improving, Ryan’s work continues to evolve. When asked to describe his style he replied, “Labelling is tricky. I think of my work as a temporary abstraction of the landscape.” When asked about comparisons to other Canadian Impressionists, artists like the Group of Seven for example, he explained that while the subject matter is often the same, the execution is not. “My work is my contemporary twist on an oldschool subject.” “It’s very important to me to be constantly changing, to chase an ideal that is always changing,” said Ryan. “It allows

entrepreneurship.” In fact, he will often guest lecture at colleges, giving actual step-by-step instruction and advice to students outlining exactly how to go about selling their work—assuring them that it is actually possible to make a living as an artist. Self-analysis is also key to Ryan’s success—something he learned from his mother who had a background in psychology. “If you’re 68

not in a good mood, ask yourself why, what’s the reason? Isolate the cause and don’t paint if you’re not in the right frame of mind.” If something isn’t working with a painting, Ryan won’t push it. The Chilly Rickey HERE TIC SPIRITS The Gin Rickey was created over a century ago in a shipping town much like Collingwood. When sailors came to port, they often craved citrus which was known to fend off scurvy. Bartender Joe Rickey added a healthy splash of gin to wash down the vitamin C, making this healthy concoction an instant hit! 2 oz Heretic Spirits Gin 1/2 oz lime juice 1/2 oz simple syrup (optional) 1/2 cup fresh watermelon fresh basil leaves rock salt

s

Method: Cut watermelon into 1-inch cubes and fill standard size blender 1/4 full of ice. Add Heretic Gin, lime juice, syrup and watermelon. Blend on high until fully liquid. Pour contents into glass. Roll 2-3 basil leaves together and stick into slush and sprinkle a small amount of rock salt on top (emphasis on small). Serve and enjoy.

BEET RAVIOLI STUFFED WITH RICOTTA, GOAT CHEESE AND BASIL WITH BROWNED BUTTER & LEMON

This dish was inspired by my childhood. Growing up in a Polish/Ukrainian family, beets were always on the table at family gatherings. Taking that thought and incorporating a quintessentially Italian staple; pasta filled with savoury herbs and cheese, this dish began to take life. To me, the finished product is a taste of home.” —Chef Kean Sagloski INGREDIENTS

6 large eggs 800 g all purpose flour/semolina (60/40 ratio ) 1 large red beet 4 oz goat cheese 4 oz ricotta 4 oz chopped basil

78

1 lemon zested

METHOD

Cover beets with foil and roast in oven set at 450°F until soft. Let cool, then blend in a food processor with eggs until smooth. Transfer to mixing bowl fitted with dough hook attachment. Add salt and flour, then mix until well combined. If dough is still sticking to the hook add additional flour, 1/4 cup at a time until firm. Wrap and refrigerate dough for 20 minutes until firm. Next make your filling by mixing goat cheese, ricotta, basil, salt and pepper. In a large pot boil water with a generous amount of salt. Cut chilled dough into two equal pieces, flatten and flour. Roll out dough pieces to make two large sheets of pasta. Place one pasta sheet on your ravioli mold and gently press each section where

the filling will go. Scoop a teaspoon of filling into each hole then brush with egg wash around the sides and middles of each hole. Place second sheet over top and press along the edges. Cut ravioli using a pasta cutter to give you 12 equal ravioli. Boil until the ravioli floats then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a plate. On medium heat, place butter into sauce pan and allow to foam and then brown. Add lemon zest, salt and pepper and cooked ravioli. Baste with browned butter then arrange ravioli on plate. Spoon butter over top and finish with a little fresh chopped basil and parmesan if desired. s

SEARED SCALLOPS WITH SWEET CREAMED CORN, FRESH ARUGULA & CRISPY PROSCIUTTO

SEARED SCALLOPS WITH SWEET CREAMED CORN, FRESH ARUGULA & CRISPY PROSCIUTTO

“A family favourite, scallops were always a treat for my mother, aunt, grandmother and myself. Having fallen in love with fresh corn and locally raised pork I began playing around with these ingredients and came up with the fresh pop of flavours put together in this dish.” INGREDIENTS

4 10/20 scallops 2 oz olive oil pinch salt and pepper kernels from a cob of corn 2 oz unsalted butter 1 shallot minced 1/2 cup heavy cream pinch granulated sugar

80

METHOD

Take connector muscles off of the side of the scallops, place on paper towel and pat until both sides are dry. Roast prosciutto on tray over parchment paper in oven at 450°F for approximately five minutes until crisp. Put to the side to cool. Melt butter over medium heat, add shallots and sauté until fragrant. Add corn kernels and cook for two minutes. Add heavy cream, sugar, salt and pepper. Cook for another two minutes until cream thickens and begins to stick to kernels. Remove from heat and place a new pan on medium/high heat. Once hot, add olive oil and season scallops with salt and pepper. Place each scallop into oil and sear until a golden brown crust has formed. Flip and repeat process. (This step should take roughly three minutes per side). Place fresh arugula in a line down the middle of a plate, spoon creamed

corn over arugula. Place scallops on top of creamed corn then garnish with crispy prosciutto pieces. ROASTED RACK OF LAMB WITH DUCK FAT FINGERLINGS, LOCAL GRILLED ASPARAGUS & GRAINY MUSTARD SAUCE.

“In pairing local Hi-Berry asparagus (which is a favourite of mine) and decadent duck fat roasted fingerlings, all the flavours combine to create an incredibly flavourful dish, perfect for sharing with family and friends.” INGREDIENTS

Allow rack of lamb to come to room temperature and season with salt and 82

pepper, then let rest for 10 minutes. Boil water and cook potatoes until they are fork tender but not overly soft. Cook asparagus in the same boiling water for one minute, then place them in a bowl of ice water to stop cooking and retain vibrant colour. In a cast iron pan add olive oil and place lamb flesh side down into pan heat over medium/high heat. Cook for twothree minutes until lamb begins to brown but not burn, flip and hold lamb on bottom side and both ends until browned. Place on baking tray and cook at 450°F for 18 minutes until medium rare. Remove lamb from oven and rest for 10 minutes. Add duck fat to a pan on medium heat.

Press fingerling potatoes with your palm to slightly crush them, then add to pan with duck fat. Season with salt and pepper and cook until golden brown, flipping once. Melt remaining butter in a pan over medium heat, and add mustard and oregano. Set aside. Place asparagus onto heated grill and cook briefly until slightly charred. Remove from grill, drizzle with lemon and season with salt and pepper. Cut lamb chops between each bone. To plate, overlap fingerling potatoes in the centre of the plate. Place asparagus to the side and arrange chops around potato, leaving the asparagus visible. Drizzle with mustard. E

Beat the

Heat

Dr. Shelby Worts, BSc, ND

W I N D O W COV E R I N G S

For indoor comfort, strategically closing windows and shutters can help greatly. When a hot day is forecast we are mindful to close east and south facing windows and shutters in the morning, then south and west facing in the afternoons and evenings. H Y D RAT I O N

I used to get zapped by the heat. The combination of bright sun, high temperatures,

and humidity was a recipe to quickly drain my energy, from which I seldom recovered by day’s end. All that has changed in recent years, with some simple habits. H I M A LAYA N B R I N E*

This has likely been the biggest gamechanger for me; replacing electrolytes lost through sweat, with brine made from pink salt. When I add this to my water bottle while working or adventuring outdoors, my energy and mental alertness are much more sustainable.

Remarkably, the more you need it the less you will taste the salt! Chunks of Himalayan salt can be found in many supplement shops and in Collingwood at the Rock Shop. ADDITIONAL BENEFIT: dabbing brine directly onto skin is brilliant for clearing pimples.

I N S T R U CT I O N S:

W E A R I N G A H AT

1. 2. 3. 4.

Outdoor activities for me, such as reading and gardening are now accompanied by a hat. With a brim large enough to shade my eyes from direct sunlight, it also protects my face from the majority of UV rays. This helps shade the head from direct heat, while also preventing eye fatigue and headaches. For hiking, I prefer to forgo the hat and select cooler, shady trails.

84

Place a few chunks of Himalayan rock salt in a jar. Fill with filtered water. Let sit for 24 hours—you now have Himalayan brine. Add 1-2 tsp of the brine to a bottle of water. If you don’t like the taste, add a squeeze of citrus.

If you’ve been following my articles for a while you’ll know how I like to calculate average daily water intake needs; half your body weight (lb) in ounces (oz). In hot weather, this should be a minimum daily goal. Fun ways to create variety include consuming fruits and veggies that have a high water content, such as cucumber, watermelon, and grapes (try freezing the grapes first!), or infusing your water overnight with fruit or cucumber. While cold alcoholic beverages can feel refreshing, alcohol has a diuretic effect on the body, which means it will not contribute to your hydration status and may actually worsen it. By practising these habits, my endurance in the summer heat has greatly increased, which means I can enjoy this beautiful season so much more. Have fun out there! *This may not be appropriate for all people; if you have hypertension or other issues with sodium, discuss with your qualified healthcare practitioner. E

NATURE 30 Y E AR S PR OT E C T IN G

by Sarah Koetsier photography by Clay Dolan

This volunteer-driven, non-profit organization is committed to protecting and preserving the lands of Georgian Bay—the world’s largest freshwater archipelago—for future generations to enjoy. GEORGIAN BAY is beloved for

areas outside of a few established parks. Communities needed a way to protect the lands they cared about. Inspired by North America’s growing land trust movement, a dedicated group of volunteers along the eastern Georgian Bay coast came together to form the Georgian Bay Land Trust. A land trust is a charitable organization whose purpose is to hold and conserve land for public benefit. Through donation, purchase, or conservation easement, land trusts protect and steward significant places for present and future generations of people and wildlife. Land trusts are almost always local in scope, made up of community members with deep knowledge and commitment to the area they represent. The Georgian Bay Land Trust’s conservation program began with two property donations in its first year; a tiny

0.3 acre island in Nares Inlet donated by Robert Thomson; and Pointe au Baril’s beloved Friend Island, now protected forever as a community picnic destination. Succeeding years brought more acres through the tireless efforts of volunteers and the generosity of environmentally-minded land donors. The Land Trust was also able to respond to community concern when cherished natural spaces were put up for sale. Our first major fundraising drive was launched in 1997 to purchase Sans Souci’s Umbrella Island, and since then we have worked with communities to protect Sandy Island (Sans Souci, 2008), Little McCoy (Pointe au Baril, 2012), Steamboat Channel Reserve (Pointe au Baril, 2016), and Rose Island Nature Reserve (West Carling, 2020). The Georgian Bay Land Trust is the only organization currently working to

s

its open spaces. Water, rocks, and trees that seem to go on forever have provided generations with places to explore, reflect, and be immersed in nature. This area is environmentally significant too; it’s home to 50 species at risk including the highest diversity of reptiles and amphibians in Canada; contains more islands than any other lake in the world; and is recognized by the United Nations for its unique and important ecology. Thirty years ago, concerns were growing among Georgian Bay residents that this extraordinary environment was at risk of permanent damage. Increasing road development and recreational property expansion, coupled with a lack of regional planning oversight, left little protection for the majority of Georgian Bay’s natural

conserve more land on eastern Georgian Bay. As of 2021, the Land Trust protects 64 properties, totalling 7,558 acres, stretching from Port Severn to the North Channel. Each of these places represents something unique in the ecology of Georgian Bay. They include old-growth forests, provincially significant wetlands, wave-blasted islands and calm vernal pools. Some welcome birdwatchers and picnickers while others provide overwintering habitat for turtles, gestation sites for massasauga rattlesnakes, and stopover locations for migrating monarchs. Together, they form a network that strengthens our entire ecosystem by maintaining travel corridors and connections for species large and small. As the Land Trust has grown, so has our commitment to using the land that we steward, to give back to the community and advance conservation. One of the ways in which we can do this is by supporting conservation science—the Georgian Bay Land Trust first welcomed researchers from McMaster University to study the wetlands and fish at the Oldfield Lake Reserve in 2005. Since then, we have collaborated with several universities and environmental organizations studying everything from turtle habitat to bat populations. Most recently, we have become an active partner in the Motus Wildlife Tracking Program, by hosting nine stations that record signals 88

from radio-tagged birds and insects and contribute data to scientific studies around the world. In 2021 we now have local accommodations for visiting scientists which will dramatically expand the possibilities for research on Georgian Bay. While eastern Georgian Bay remains a sanctuary for many animal species whose populations are severely threatened elsewhere, our network of natural areas is stronger than in many parts of the province and world. Our task for thirty years has been

to ensure that it remains this way. Since our early days, the Georgian Bay Land Trust community has grown to include over 1,500 volunteers, donors, partners, and staff with a shared passion for safeguarding Georgian Bay. This work is needed as urgently now as it was when the Georgian Bay Land Trust first began. Thank you to everyone whose vision, passion, and generosity has brought us this far, and to all who will join us in the years to come. We look forward to seeing you on the bay this summer! E

The 14-hectare site is surrounded by mature forest, a natural pond, access to hiking and biking trails, and more than enough space to host and entertain family and friends. “The four seasons nature of the Blue Mountain area was a big draw for us, and to find a property with such a large pond

This project wasn’t the first time the designers had worked with the family, so a considerable amount of trust and common ground had already been established. “Having a long-standing personal relationship fast tracks the expectation and creative process,” says Ada, who collaborated with the homeowners to ensure that each of the architectural elements, materials, and decorative pieces were positioned thoughtfully within the context of the broader surroundings. “Renovation projects can be stressful and time consuming—

s

preparing meals can be something enjoyed by every member of this large family. The adjoining dining room wing is spacious for large gatherings and the expansive windows with views to the woods and the tranquil pond. The second floor, reached by a glazed staircase, is the private quiet space and principal sleeping quarters. The corridor opens up as a continuous balcony overlooking and wrapping around the great hall, opens to exterior elevated decks that are also accessible from the master bedroom suite.

you really get to know people as they experience first-hand residential renovations. Have done a multiple of these and a new build with the client made our working relationship a well-oiled machine.” Despite its grand stature, nature plays a lead role in the intentional and deliberate design choices—the individual appointed spaces feel intimate and cozy. The lighting plan generated ‘glowing spaces’, especially in the evenings, by offering alternatives to pot lighting. “We peppered the common spaces with sconces, back lit shelving and added concealed integrated lighting within cabinetry,” says Ada. “We also back lit mirrors, used frosted globe fixtures to soften feature lighting and tried to make the lighting feel more like a ‘relaxing retreat’, rather than a ‘bright modern house’ in the country.” 106

Of course, not everything could have been predicted. The pandemic that set in shortly after the home was completed means entertaining has been on hold, though the homeowners happily report that each room is used and enjoyed. A media room and in-law suite are located to the southern wing. Further along the corridor opens onto a sauna, outdoor cabana with change rooms, bar, and large outdoor pool. The basement is the principal indoor play area with a sports court, rec room and fitness room. “Design is a process, and is a reflection of the client and not the principals in the design group,” explains Patrick Coulter. “Because if there is enough time spent with the client, and enough questions answered, then we’re really looking to accomplish their goals and desires.” E

elebrating the vision of so many local entrepreneurs, Collingwood’s first ever Fashion Week will connect this area’s vibrant fashion and beauty community to the already wellpositioned tourist draw of the arts, culture and culinary sector, September 27-October 1, 2021. “Collingwood’s downtown offers a truly world-class shopping experience that deserves to be showcased in a big way,” says Jessica Flynn of Downtown Collingwood Business Improvement Area (BIA). In addition to several in-store special events throughout the week, three main events are planned; the launch; a midweek expert panel evening; and the mainstage fashion show finale. With boutique fashion shows held throughout the week, the Main Stage will feature selections from our local fashion retailers, makeup and styling demonstrations, interviews with owners and designers from brands carried in the downtown, plus swag bags for attendees. Held under a big top in the Pine Street parking lot, this event will act as the perfect conclusion to an exciting week of fashion, beauty and culture! “This event will also create collaborative opportunities for the food, photography, videography, music, media and marketing, planning and tech talent within our downtown to work together to create vibrant, multifaceted events throughout the week,” says Jessica. Each day a selection of microevents will take place at local retail stores, restaurants, outdoor on the street and live in windows, with the Main Stage being under a big top in the heart of downtown Collingwood. An interactive online hub will assist participants in navigating and customizing their unique Fashion Week experience. Following current Covid-19 gathering protocols, we hope to offer a variety of in-person events. Guests will then use their badge (physical and or digital) to gain access to live events. It’s All About Perspective Is it safe to assume that the meteoric growth we have seen is ebbing?

pandemic. The market has changed, and the statistics reflect the reality of the “COVID Effect” on real estate. So, in this case, the 300% statistic is not just a reflection of the strength of the market in the first two months of the second quarter of 2021. It is a reflection of that strength against the weakness of the same period in the previous year. The pandemic impacted both of those periods in profoundly different ways. A statistic alone does not explain this data. We need to be mindful of the circumstances that led to the number. This perspective explains the crazy number and reminds us that, while the market has been hot, the comparison was made against a market that was not just cold—it was frozen. Frozen in fear and uncertainty. To produce a statistic that compares these two periods is irresponsible without the much-needed perspective. At our weekly sales meetings, I remind our team of the importance of perspective. Our clients can get data anywhere. We are not the guardians of the data we once

EALTORS® are trusted advisors in what can often be a stressful and hugely important transaction for most people. Our job is not to “sell” anybody anything. Our job is to educate, advise, assist and bring to bear the benefits of our experience in helping our clients achieve their real estate goals. Data is a key tool in helping us do our job well. At the brokerage, we produce market reports in short form and long form, by area and by neighbourhood. We compare data month to month, year to year and over the past ten years. We deploy this data every day to our clients and use it to guide our advice. Data however cannot be viewed in

a vacuum. Twain made famous the quote that probably best articulates the problem of data; “There are three types of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.” Since I am known to toss data around every now and again, I am always mindful that statistics, while data-driven, are easily misinterpreted and are altogether unreliable without context. This is of particular import when looking at statistics in strange times. When you have a look below at the statistics from our current market, you will see incredible volume increases in the past months. At no other point could we have said that volumes increased 300% between one year and the next. April and May 2021 were incredibly productive months in our market. But remember where we were during the same time frame last year. The first COVID lockdown had all of us sheltering in place. Sales volumes in real estate had dropped by almost 75% over the same period in 2019. Fast forward a year and we are dealing with what we all hope are the last throes of the

were. Our job is perhaps more important now than it was then. With so much data around, the ability of a professional to provide perspective is truly valuable. As I write this piece, the market seems to be normalizing somewhat. Average sale price appears to be plateauing. We are seeing an increase in conditional offers, and a decrease in multiple offers in some housing categories (certainly not all). However, after a year of rapid growth in pricing in the market, this plateauing effect is welcome. Will it last? Will the rise continue? Will the market take back some of its gains? We know only at the time of writing that the trend lines have changed recently. We simply don’t have the data to make an accurate forecast, but it is not at all unreasonable to assume that the meteoric growth we have seen is ebbing. Regarding MLS® sales in the Southern Georgian Bay, the second quarter 2021 market has continued at a record clip, although it has shown signs of cooling after the first quarter’s activity and highs. Both April and May saw record volume sales, capping twelve straight record months going back to last June. 132

Southern Georgian Bay MLS® Sales by Month 2019 vs 2020 vs 2021

Total volume for the two months was $502,337,554, up a big 304% from last year and up 78% from 2017’s previous record. Year-to-date volume sales of $1,031,715,248 were up 182% from a year ago, as well as up 93% from 2017’s prior high. Additionally, the year-to-date average sale price of $848,450 was up 44% from last year’s $588,308. On the unit sales side, April’s and May’s combined total of 583 was up 165% from 2020’s 220, but down 5% from 2016’s high of 615. Year-to-date sales of 1216 were up 96% from one year ago, as well as up 10% from 2016’s former benchmark of 1106. This year’s sales came on 1638 new listings, yielding a 74% sales/listings ratio: a solid buyers’ market, up from last year’s 48% ratio. Not only that, but 2021’s year-todate expired listings of 43 were down 82% from 2020’s 243, while this year’s averagedays-on-market of 19 was down 34 days from last year’s 53. Further, 2021 has enjoyed a high 105.6% sale-price-to-list-price ratio, and as of May there was just one month of inventory going forward. By comparison, last year’s market as of May had a 97.9% sale-price-to-list-price ratio, and there were

five months of inventory going forward. With regard to unit sales by price range, we’ve seen a huge shift that reflects 2021’s 44% year-to-date average sale price increase over 2020. While yearto-date unit sales in the Under -$500K bracket were down 44% from last year, this year’s sales in the $500K+ bracket were up a 223% overall.
