William M. Vareika Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa

Historian and philanthropist, William Vareika exemplifies the art of giving. A son of the Bay State and graduate of its premier Jesuit institution, he came to Newport in pursuit of knowledge as an undergraduate researcher. Foregoing plans for a career in law, he turned, instead, to the arts and their place in our cultural heritage. Today, this honorand stands at the crossroads of the charitable, educational, political, and social worlds of our historic city. Vareika Fine Arts Ltd. is an imposing gallery ensconced on prestigious Bellevue Avenue, in the shade of the landmark Casino building and its famous tenant, the Tennis Hall of Fame. Through the gallery, its founder has provided a public educational forum focused on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American artists and their work—a different kind of public service—initially centered on one neglected individual, John La Farge. As a student who admired the La Farge murals in Boston’s Trinity Church, Mr. Vareika turned an undergraduate art history project into a life-long study of this once-famous Newport artist. He revitalized the La Farge legacy and in so doing enriched a host of charitable organizations. Such disparate causes as the Aquidneck Land Trust, Redwood Library, the Robert Potter League for Animals, and Save the Bay have benefited from his responsive and responsible giving. Not the least of these is our young university. Five years ago, our generous benefactor established the William Vareika Award for Arts and Public Policy, conferred annually on a Salve Regina graduate with a demonstrated appreciation for art, as well as a social conscience: a description not unfitting Mr. Vareika himself. More recently, a larger project came to fruition in the heart of the Salve Regina campus. Upon entering Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, guests, worshippers, and—most importantly— students are greeted by a sight that few art historians have been privileged to share: the La Farge windows. A feast for the eye, the mind, and the spirit, these portraits in opalescent glass occupy their rightful place thanks largely to the expertise and efforts of Mr. Vareika, and no one is more pleased by the result than he. Playing a pivotal role in the recovery, restoration and installation of the La Farge windows, he has honored the artist’s own celebrated remark, that “the past, though it cannot be relived, can always be repaired.” In recognition of his joyful work in forging the link between artistic and social awareness, and for his significant contributions to Salve Regina University, William Michael Vareika is hereby awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all its attendant rights, privileges, and responsibilities, on this fifteenth day of May, in the year 2011.

Jill Biden Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa

Jill Biden is a master teacher. A scholar whose academy encompasses the workaday world of ordinary people coping with extraordinary problems, Dr. Biden has devoted her life to addressing some of the country’s most pressing issues: childhood literacy, breast cancer research, and military family support. In this, she epitomizes the mission of Salve Regina University and the tenets of its founding order, the Sisters of Mercy. The first learner in the classroom, as every good teacher knows, is the teacher. Observant, open-minded, and empathetic, the good teacher hears what each student is saying and— often more important—what the student does not, or cannot, say. And so the good teacher adjusts, improvises, and creates a program and place of learning in which the student can thrive, educationally and personally. Thus, this good teacher learned, through decades of service in the community college classroom, that readers begin reading early—or, often, not at all. So began Book Buddies, founded by Dr. Biden in 2007 to encourage early reading by providing books for underprivileged preschoolers and training their parents to be at-home tutors. This good teacher is also a friend. As friends entered the struggle of their lives against that relentless adversary breast cancer, she was moved to join the battle at their side. And so began the Biden Breast Health Initiative, founded in 1994, together with her husband Joe, which has educated more than 10,000 high school girls about the importance of early detection. This good teacher is a mother whose son served in Iraq. Through his experience, she has observed armed services families engaged in a disheartening struggle, as multiple deployments leave individual parents without the necessary income to care for their children, as well as the mutual support formerly provided by now-absent husbands and wives. And so, she has lent her efforts to Boots on the Ground, in support of military families here at home, and is presently carrying that message across this country, together with her partner in action, Michelle, in a campaign entitled Joining Forces. In the words of the ancient philosopher, this honorand teaches, “not by words, but by accomplishment.” We applaud Dr. Biden, the good teacher, for hearing what those without a voice are saying, for articulating their plight, and for stepping forward to meet their need. In recognition of her exemplary leadership, her selfless labors on behalf of others, and her noteworthy accomplishments, Salve Regina University hereby confers upon Jill Biden the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa, with all its attendant rights, privileges, and responsibilities, on this fifteenth day of May in the year 2011.

Academic Regalia When universities were taking form in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, they were under the jurisdiction of the Church. Most of those studying were clerks in Holy Orders, monks, or priests. They wore a habit or cloak, to which was attached a cowl or hood. This could be pulled up over the head or thrown back, according to the weather. Gowns were necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings, and hoods served to cover the tonsured head before the use of the skull cap. Today, the academic costume of cap, gown, and hood has taken on a symbolic meaning. Colors and shapes conform to a generally accepted code and indicate the faculty conferring the degree and the kind of degree conferred. Gowns for the bachelor’s degree are worn closed and are distinguished by their long, pointed sleeves. Master’s degree gowns are designed to be worn open. They have very long sleeves, oblong in shape. Gowns for the doctoral degree, usually black, are also designed to be worn open and have velvet panels. Three velvet bars are stitched to the upper part of the full, bellshaped sleeves. Hoods are trimmed with a slim strip of velvet to indicate the specific faculty awarding the degree. The colored lining is the official color of the institution conferring the degree. Hoods may be trimmed to represent the following academic areas:

Honor Cords Students at Salve Regina University who have distinguished themselves through academic performance wear honor cords of these colors: Gold — Summa Cum Laude Blue — Magna Cum Laude White — Cum Laude

The Mace The mace and its bearer represent a custom that dates back to the Middle Ages. From the sixteenth century in England and since colonial days in America, it has become a symbol of office carried by the procession leader. In the academic world, the mace signifies teaching authority. The Salve Regina University mace was designed by Rhode Island sculptor Paul A. Cavanagh as an octagonal, formalized flower. The staff of ebony represents lignum vitae — the tree of life. A circle of eight rigid geometric forms of silver, peaked with pyramids of lapis lazuli, are representative of the Virtues. The Intellectual and Moral Virtues enable one to lead a fruitful and good life. The extending leaves of blossom deriving from the silver forms are symbolic of one’s development in the world. An inner circle of leaves, in close embrace with the central form, and pistil-like cruciform with crown, suggest one’s development in love of Christ and the cross.

The President’s Medallion The sterling silver medallion worn by the University President at all formal academic functions symbolizes the leadership and authority of the institution’s highest office. Handcrafted by John Cavanagh, the design is based on the University shield, which symbolizes the commitment of the Sisters of Mercy to Salve Regina University, the dedication to learning by all members of the Salve Regina community, and the unending search for wisdom that flows from the knowledge of the liberal scholar. Each link of the chain is a “Mercy Cross,” with a crown superimposed over the face of each cross.
