Courses are being offered .a the summer schedule for the firsi: time at Salve Regina College. Many Newport men and women are taking advantage of these courses to fulfill the requirements for teacher certificates. Others, in view of the necessary ·semester hours for an increment in salary, are also benefiting by them. The nineteen courses offered include : Theology, Rev. Gerald F. years were spent at Sr. Mary's Convent in Newport where she acted as Principal of the School. She had finished one year as Superior at St. Mary's before being transferred to the newly-opened college in 1947. Mother Provincial studied at the Catholic University in W ashington and received her B.S. in Library Science. In assuming the duties and responsibilities of Mother Provincial, Mother Mary Catherine will be governing a numerically large province of the Sisters of Mercy of the Union. At present this province numbers over eight hundred religious. • Other appointments by the General Council were Mother Mary Hild a, R.S.M., former Provincial, to that of Assistant Provincial and Si ster M. Antonine, R.S.M., who formerly taught at Sr. Joseph's High School, New Bedford, to Provincial Councilor. All appointments were announced and became effective on July 2, 1954.

Mother Mary Catherine, R.S.M., Mother Assistant Provincial for the past three years, has been appointed Mother Provincial by Mother Mary Maurice, R.S.M., Mother General, at a recent meeting of the General Council of the Sisters of Mercy. On completing four years as Supt:rior at Salve Regina College, Mother M. Catherine was made Mother Assistant Provincial in July, 1951. Since that time she has resided at the Provincial House in Cumberland where she has assisted in guiding, directing, and stabilizing the many works of the Sisters of Mercy in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Previous to her work at this college, the new Provincial taught in several schools of the diocese. She was stationed at St. Xavier's Convent in Providence and taught at Tyler School. As Superior of St. Edward's Convent in Pawtucket, Mother M . Catherine also assumed the responsibility of Principal of Sr. Edward's School for six years. The next ten
