Th e Cl ass Song, written by Eileen Griffen, was sung by rhe Class of 1959. The progra m, prepared by the seniors includ ed the Class History read by Maril yn Sullivan, the C l. tss Prophecy read by Evelyn Davo ren and th e Class Will read by Shei la Woods. Ann Rita Brya n presenred the Class Ode. Anne M otte de livered the Address entitled "T omorrow-Time for A ction". J anis Miles, Se nior C lass President, then presented the college banner to M ary Healey who as pres ident, accepted it in behalf of the incoming So phomore Class. Mother M ary Hilda conferred the Acade mic Hoods for the arrs and SCiences. Immedi ate ly fo llowing this, M other presented Honors to the me mbers o f K appa Ga mma Pi -Anne Carpenter, R osa daS ilva, Simone Laplante, Dol ores M atoes, Anne M otte and lnes Silva. Induction o f new m embers into Sigma Phi Sigma th en took place. N ew m embers includ ed Susan Ha tfield , Dolores M aroes, Patr ic ia McCabe, and Marilyn Sullivan from the Senior Class and H elena D'Aimeida, D ea nna Enca lada, and Alice Violet fro m the Junior Class. The Class o f 1961 p er form ed the trad itio nal Laurel C hain D ance for th e Cl ass of 1959. Participation in the planting of ' the Class Tree which was pl anted at the entrance o f the main bui lding were Edith Spooner , J ane Integlia and D eanna Encalada . Class D ay was concluded by an Ac t o f Consecration to the Sacred H eart. V ery R evere nd Irving A. Georges officiated at Benedictio n of the Blessed Sacrame nt, assisted by R everend Jo hn Shea.

Alumnae Fete Class of 1959 On M ay 8, I 959 the P rovidence Chapter of the Salve R eg ina Col lege Alumn :te hon ored the graduates o f th e Provide nce area with a C1ffce H our, at the Plantations Ciu b. Chairman for rhe occasio n was Miss Lor·e tra R oss. Coffee and dessl:rt were served; Jani s Mil es and B:nbara Balza no poured. Mrs. Ma ure·en O ares Sween::y greeted the graduates and welcom~d them officially into th e Chaprer. At th e hom::: of Miss Kathleen Su iIivan, '58, on May I::?, the memb ers of the Newport Chapter were hosr to the Newport, Fall Ri ver, New York , and foreign stud ent m embers o f th e class of '59. The g radua tes were served a spaghett i dinner and wer·e welcomed by M ary Leha ne Horga n, Pres id ent of the Chapter. On M ay 27, th e graduating class wil l he presented tO the executive board , of whi ch Mrs. Mauree n Oates Sweeney is presid ent. At th is time the board will honor the class o f '59 with a buffet supper and w ill for mall y ind uct the g raduates into rhe Alumnae Associa t ion. The M ost R everend Russell J. M cVinney, D.D. , LL.D., will award the degrees. J ohn D . Donavan, professor and chairman of the department of soc iolot,ry at Boston College, will deliver the principle address. H av ing bee n granted graduate fell owships tO Bosto n Co llege <: nd H arvard Unive rs ity, Dr. D onava n received his B.A . and hi s M.A. deg rees from Bosron College, and his Ph.D. from H arvard . During his profess iona l career, he has been instructor and assistant professor at Fordha m University. Before being selected for hi s prese nt p osition , D ocror D onavan served as associate professor ar Boston Coll ege. In 1958, he was President of the Ameri can Sociological Soci ety . Presently, D octor D onavan is co nducting bas ic research in r egard to the Ameri can Catholic Scholar. This is be ing done rhrough a research award granted tO Dr. D onavan from CCICA. This honor has been in effect si nce Sep tember l , 1959, and will continue to September 1, I 960.
