Costumes, Singing Highlight Initiation It was apparent that the student body knew that Freshmen Week had begun at Salve Regina. Those characteristic white beanies with the large blue letters appeared everywhere on the campus-in the classrooms, at lunch, in the lounge, and even occasionally in the shower! Initiation commenced as ninetysix freshmen, dressed •i n individual costumes, paraded on corridors. Some never dreamed that their hair could be braided into so many pigtails! A hot water bottle, scatter wg, and p ail became familiar sights at Salve Regina. This, however, was not the end to the dreaded "Initiation." The em ire freshmen group was obliged .co perform for all students. The climax of Freshman Week was now lilt hand. For the first time the new members of the college worked as a class. After a most successful performance, the freshmen laughed and talked with upper classmen, and the freshmen admitted that the sophomores weren't the "awful creatures" they had imagined them to be.

Why Bother? ? ? Why do we bother to have a campus newspaper? Certainly it's not for the announcement of any real news/ Look at this issue, for instance. We all knew about the building fund drive and the NF council and just about everything else that is mentioned in these .four pages. So, why bother? Why should the editor, associate editor, reporters, typists, etc. waste their time? Good questions, aren't they? Well, if you will bear with us for just a few moments we'll try to tell you why we ·bother. First of all, we know that we're not giving the New York T imes nor even Th e EaJt Cup cake Gazette any competition. What's more, we're not trying to! We are not in existence to act as a medium of mass education in current world events. Why compare us to publications that are? The raison d'etre of a college newspaper is a much simpler yet a very

important one. College publications are established to fulfill a need or many needs on the individual campus. A few of these may be offered now. Primarily, this newspaper serves as a chronicle of events which go on in and for the college. If you wish, it may be termed an informal history book of Salve Regina College. You claim that you know this history, therefore, you don't have to read it. Of cour.se yo u know it .. . you're making i t! But does everyone in the English department know thaot the Chemistry students visited an industrial research lab last month? This is only a hypot hetical instance, but the ·p oint is: had it happened, it would have been noted in the college paper. Therefore, the newspaper can and does let you know how the other half lives. And that is the answer. That's why ·we bother.

Continued increase of the student body warrants bigger dreams for the future: residence halls, chap e 1, auditorium, department buildings. During the ten-day span, money will be raised by selling World's Finest Chocolate Bars, personalized with the college picture and the Mercy seal.
