Carolyn Downs To Lead Class Of '61 Carolyn D owns, a resident o f Providence, and a grad uate of Sr. Mary's Academy, Bay View, was elected president o f the incoming jun ior class. In high school she was vice president o f her cl ass for two years and a member o f the Rh ode Island H onor Society. Whil e at Salve Regina she has been class representative to the Stude nt Council for tw o years and an active me mber of the Queen's Choristers. The newl y elecred vi ce pres ide nt is Betsy Phil! ips, a nursing m a jor. She is a grad uate of R ogers Hi gh Schcol where she also was a m ember o f the Rhod e Island H onor Society. Betsy recentl y returned from a Nursing Conventio n 111 Philadelphia where she r·epresented Salve Regina as Tunior De legate. Class secretary is M auree n McGillicuddy, a Spanish m a jor and an education minor. M aureen has plenty of experience as she was class secretary this past year :111d also served in the same position at Sr. Toseph's Acade my in P ortland , Maine. Judith Ready, a nat ive o f Lexington, Mass., was re-elected treasurer. She is m ajoring in ho me economi cs and mino ring in arr. Jud y would like ro go into the fie ld o f inter ior decorating after g rad uat ion. This year's resident Student Cou ncil representative is Carol M orse from Rumford. An English m ~ j o r and an ed ucation mino r, Carol pla ns to teach a ft er graduatio n. She is also active in Dramatics Club and the Ebb Tide here at Salve R eg ina. Sue Hal e will fill the position of commuter representative to Stude nt Council. She is a native of N ewport and a g radu ate o f R ogers High School. This past year she was v ice president of the Commmers' Club.

Sister M ary Hild a, R.S.M., recently a nnoun ced thac Salve R egin a College has purchas·ed a new building to be opened as a res idence hall in the fall o f 1959. "La Verriere", the former M ou lron estate, is situated o n Hellevue and Ruggles A venues, and has been purchased from Mrs. Ge raldine Carthage Bodley, with the lega l adv ice of Mr. Cornelius C. M oore and Mr. Franc is X . Flannery. The College has named the forty-five room structure "Qu een H all" in honor o f the Bl·essed M other o f G od, Que·en o f the Universe. This attractive G eorgian type dwelling, located in the exclusive section o f N ewport will offer the utmost in gracious living to irs occ upants. Situated on approx imately five acres of land, the grou nds are attractively landscaped with sweeping lawns, shade trees, and a lo vely rose garden. Th e large parlors on the first floor w ill remain much the sa me, with the g irl s residing o n the other floors. With the purchase o f Queen H all the number of res id ence halls procur·ed by the Col lege during the short spa n of ri me si nce it has .ex isted is raised ro six. The other five are M oore H all , M ercy H all , O chre Court, M cAuley H all , and M arian Hall. The incoming seniors, the Class of 19o0, will be the first class to occupy the build in g. This property will eliminate the use of the former Carmeli te M onasca ry o n Narragansett Avenue, wh ich was ro have been a temporary resid.e nc·e hall.

The class of '60 recently elected two new offi cers to guide them throug h their last and most important yea r o f college. G ail Fisher, a perite soc ial 'c ience major, was elected president. "F ishy", as she is known to her classmares, comes from Sr. Mary's Academy, where she also was president of h-er senior class, m aking her well aqua inted with the duties of a class officer. This aqu aintance h ~s been strengt hened at Salve Reg ina, for she served as cl ass treasurer for the past two years. H er e nthusiasm and loyalty have made her a very popular and acrive member of her class and a g irl well capable ro handle her new duries. Th e new vice president is Irene McCarthy, a tall , d ark ha ired Newporter. Re nee is a Foods major and is ·eas ily recogni zed by her pleasant manner and frie ndliness. She is ~ member o f the Qu ee n's Choristers and H ome Economics Club, displaying leadership in both . She has what it takes ro m ake a good cl ass officer and is willing ro exercise this talent for the good of the class. M onique Geffroy was re-elected S·ecre tary of rhe senior year class. She is a hisrory major and an education minor. The class treasurer is Phyllis Coffey, a res ident o f Winchester, Mass. and a g rad uate of Marycliff Academ y. She is an English major and an ed ucatio n minor. Phyllis is also active in the Queen's Choristers. G ail Fonraine will represent the residems on Student Council. She is a nati ve of Whitman. She plans to reach social science after she grad uates from Salve Reg ina. Representing the senior commuters is Berry Lawro n, a native of ewport and a gradu ate o f Sr. Cather ine's Academy. She is an English major and an ed ucation minor and would like to teach on the secondary leve l a fter grad uation.
