Initial Concert Whirls Joint Musical Carousel For College Glee Clubs
Father Donaghy, S.J. Conducts Annual S.R.C. Students Retreat
Heralding the musical season, the Salve Regina Glee Club will join ·rhe Providence College choral group in a public concert at St. Mary' s Academy, Bayview, on November five .
Father William Donaghy, S.J ., superior of Campion Hall, will conduct t he annual retreat at Salve Regina College from November twenty-six to twenty -nine .
Garbed in the traditional college gowns, members of both clubs will blend their vocal talents for the second ·rime in S. R. C.'s harmonic history . This return engagement will offer renditions, each group alone, both clubs in combination, mingled with a number of solos and duets. The musical spotlight will fall on Miss Barbara McAndrew, outstanding glee club soloist, who has chosen for her selections, " Lover Come Back to Me" , by Romberg, and " Let My Song Fill Your Heart" , by Ernest Charles. The combined clubs will sing " Now Let Every Tongue " , " Road To Mandalay" , " Riff Song " and " Land of Our Hearts". Among the songs to be ·featured by the Salve Regina Glee Club are, "Cantate Domino", " Ave Maria " , " In o Monastery Garden ", " Teach Me to Pray", "Serenad e", " My Heart Is A Silent Viol in", "Kentucky Babe", " Snow White ", and "The Dream of Summer" . Prior to this concert, a combination rehearsal and Halloween Dance was held in a holiday setting at Mercy Hall for Glee Club members on October thirty.
Commercial Club Hosts N. E. College Students Students from the various New England Catholic Women 's Colleges will attend an informal meeting at S. R. C. on November eight at three o'clock. Representatives from Annhurst, Emmanuel, and Regis Colleges will be present for this meeting . The purpose of the meeting is to help the students to learn what ·;·he other colleges are doing in the line of commercial activities in ·r heir respective clubs. An informal panel discussion wi!l be held and various activities will be planned.
A native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Father Donaghy was graduated from Holy Cross College . He received his M.A. in English from St . Louis University and has been at different times, columnist, poetry critic, and associate editor for America, the National Catholic Weekly . Father Donagh y entered the Society of Jesus in 1929. From 1946 ·;·o 1948 he was the spiritual director of theologians at Weston College . At present he is \he superior of the retreat house, Campion Hall. To open i·he retreat, Father Donaghy will deliver his first conference on Sunday evening at nine p.m. Benediction will ·io llow his talk. The Missa Cantata will be celebrated on Monday morning to be proceeded during the day by four conferences, spiritual reading, the rosary, and stations of ·;·he cross. The same general program will ·rake place on Tuesday. The Examen and ·rhe Angelus will be :;aid daily in the college chapel while t he college choir will sing the Mass . The Dialogue Mass on Wednesday will officially close the four days retreat. Father Donaghy will give the Papal Blessing to faculty and students.

On the eighteenth of this month, religious and laymen alike, in all parts of Rhode Island and Fall River, Massachusetts, will turn their minds, their prayers, and their hearts toward Mother .Mary Hilda, R.S.M., for on that day, ·i he f aast of her patron, St. Hilda, a ·i ribute will be paid to the woman who has given so much of herself to the work of God and men. That special day will undoubtedly have added significance this year, as nineteenfifty marks the one hundredth anniversary of the order of which Mother Mary Hilda is such a vital part, the Sisters of Mercy . During th e month af November the Sociology class will hear a se ries of lectures to be given by professional social workers from the various welfare agencies in Newport. Miss Madeline McGauran, area supervisor for the Newport County Departm ent of Social Welfare Division of Public Assistance, will be the first lecturer of the month . She supervises case work regarding the aged, the blind, and dependent children in the Newport area . The Reverend Everett MacPhillips, a pioneer in the field of work for ihe hard of hearing will also give a lecture during this month.
