College President Celebrates Golden Jubilee With the arrival of December 28, Mother Mary Hilda, R.S.M., Mother Provincial of i·he Province of Providence and President of Salve Regina College, will celebrate fifty years in the service of God . Beginning with the day on which she w.:ls professed, December 28, 1901, Mother Mary Hilda has been a guiding force to the Sisters of Mercy. Mother Provincial started her teaching career at Cleary and St. Mary's Schools. In 1913 she was sent to St. Xavier's Academy where she 'taught English ·l or nineteen years. Mother Mary Hilda became principal of St. Xavier's in 1932. Her four years of administration were years of progress. She organized extra-curricular,
library, physical education, and study club programs. Under her the XAVIERETTE, Catholic Teacher's Conclave, and Marian Motherhood Assembly came into being . In 1936 her work as Mother Provincial began . After the formation of Salve Regina College, Mother Mary Hilda became ~he second president after her re-election os Mother Provincial. Our President's capability in the field of higher education is demonstrated by her degrees . Carols, Parents' Tea Open Xmas Festivities; Art Exhibit Scheduled The Queens Choristers of Salve Regina will open holiday ·festivities with Christmas Carols to be presented here on December 16. In honor of the parents of the Freshman class who will be formally greeted on this occasion, the girls, under the direction of Mrs. Louise Heywood, will sing " The Angel 's Lullaby" , " Song of ¥he Shepherds" and "The Angel of Peace" as three of their selections. To display the creative work of students at the college, art majors will present their third annual exhibit on December 16 in the Great Hall. Judges will award prizes for the most outstanding in general art ability in each group. Classes in freehand drawing, basic design , lettering, oil painting and art education will submit work in still life, landscapes, abstract design, and portraits. The Committee includes: Joan Shugrue, Virginia Day, Sally Ann Macleod, Virginia Balf, Marian Taber, Betty Burns, Mary Elizabeth Maclntire, and Margaret Mullaney . Also on December 16, the freshman class will entertain parents and friends at the annual Christmas Tea. Before the tea the Dramatics Club will present The Frozen Heart a British play by Ivory Brides. In the leads will be Marguerite Johnson, Caroline Woods, Paula Roche, Virginia Day, and Ann Collins.
Dinner, Processional, Caroling Climax Christmas Festivities Christmas celebrations at the college this year will include the annual Holly Dinner, the processional to the crib, and candlelight carols on Thurs. day, December 20. HOLLY DINNER Beginning at 6:00 p. m., the Holly Dinner will be held in the banquet hall. Faculty members will be honored guests of the student body and the presentation of Christmas remembrances will be made ¥o Father Dillon, Father Shea and the Sisters. After dinner the Queen' s Choristers will present the Christmas Cantata by Franz " Christmas" , a cantata by Franz Abt, will be presented by the Queen '> Choris- Abt in honor of the golden jubilee of the ters in honor of Mother Provincial's Gold- President of the College, Mother Mary en Jubilee of Profession, on December Hilda , R.S.M.
