Welcome to Leon! Before you start your trip in this wonderful city, there are some basic things you need to know. You must be aware that in Leon there are 1.6 million people, which is quite a thing isn’t it? First of all, we would like to advise regarding our local weather, it is cool in the morning but sunny during the rest of the day. Sometimes we have some drizzles so just make sure you bring with you a light jacket. Leon has many different attractions waiting for you. If you wish to shop, an excellent option would be to visit the mall “Plaza Mayor”. Where you can find a variety of places to eat, relax, watch movies, go bowling, and even go ice-skating at “La Pista”. If you decide for a movie night, there are also other movie theaters available in the area, such as “Cinemex” or “Centro Max”, which are also shopping malls, with a diversity of stores and restaurants. As a reminder you are in the leather and footwear capital of Mexico, so finding comfortable and nice shoes as well as leather accessories should not be a problem. We recommend you to visit “Mulza Outlet” or “Galeria del Zapato”.

Now, if you are curious about Mexican cuisine, here are some helpful tips about food in Leon. As you probably have heard, people in Mexico enjoy eating spicy food. So if you ever go to a restaurant, you can ask for hot peppers ”chile”, please try little at the beginning in case you are not used to it. A traditional snack in Leon are “guacamayas”. People come from other cities just to try them, so don´t miss out on them if you can! A place to go is “Las de Javier”. It will cost you about 20 pesos, which is approximately US$1.50. Before we forget in Mexico as part of our cultural eating habits we enjoy eating “tacos”, which I’m sure you’ve heard about. This is a corn “tortilla” containing with different types of filling, such as, chicken, beef, vegetables, cheese, etc. There are many places to stop and enjoy them an example is “Los cuñados” or “Tacos Don Luis”. unique experience.

PLACES TO VISIT / SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE San Miguel is a city and located in the far eastern part of the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico. It is 274 km from Mexico City and 97 km from the state capital of Guanajuato.[1] Historically, the town is important as being the birthplace of Ignacio Allende, whose surname was added to the town’s name in 1826, as well as the first municipality declared independent of Spanish rule by the nascent insurgent army during the Mexican War of Independence. However, the town waned during and after the war, and at the beginning of the 20th century was in danger of becoming a ghost town. Its Baroque/Neoclassical colonial structures were “discovered” by foreign artists who moved in and began art and cultural institutes such as the Instituto Allende and the Escuela de Bellas Artes. This gave the town a reputation, attracting artists such as David Alfaro Siqueiros, who taught painting. This attracted foreign art students, especially former U.S. soldiers studying on the G.I. Bill after the Second World War. Since then, the town has attracted a very large number of foreign retirees, artists, writers and tourists, which is shifting the area’s economy from agriculture and industry to commerce catering to outside visitors and residents. The main attraction of the town is its well-preserved historic center, filled with buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. This and the nearby Sanctuary of Atotonilco have been declared World Heritage Sites.
