Message from the Chairman Matt Pound
The Escondido Chamber of Commerce is excited about the success we have seen thus far in the 2019-2020 fiscal year. First, I would like to thank all our members for your support and participation. Without your contributions of time, finances, and expertise, the chamber would not be what it has become. I also owe a big thank you to our board of directors who have all sacrificed so much of their professional and personal time to make sure that the Escondido Chamber is advocating for our community and its businesses. I would also like to recognize the City of Escondido and its leadership under new Mayor Paul McNamara, as well as the relationships and collaboration between the city and the chamber, which have been honest and a new breath of fresh air. As I meet more and more leaders within our city, I realize we share many of the same difficulties. There is, no doubt, a serious work force availability issue. Low unemployment numbers are great as an economic indicator, but the unfortunate reality is that so many of our local businesses remain understaffed and, in many cases, unable to grow. The chamber is taking this urgent and serious need to heart and has partnered with the Escondido Union High School District, the City of Escondido, Palomar College, County of San Diego, Project Cornerstone, and a number of businesses within Escondido to host a 2-day camp for 40 local high school seniors. The camp will provide real world exposure to industries and career paths that their school curriculums are currently preparing them for. This event not only helps our graduates narrow down their career choices, but also shows our local business leaders just how prepared our students are as they enter the work force. If you are interested in receiving more information about the 2-day camp, please reach out to the Chamber Leadership team. For those of you in the community reading this article who are not yet members, I encourage you to consider becoming a member TODAY! It is our responsibility at the Escondido Chamber to work in the best interest of our businesses, and there is no organization focused on connecting our businesses with city leadership, schools, local non-profits, or each other more than the Escondido Chamber. We look forward to serving you and the Escondido community for years to come.

Emmanuel Faith Community Church Welcomes New Lead Pastor By Hannah Preston
Every weekend about 4,000 people of differing ages and ethnicities converge together at 639 E. 17th Avenue at Encino Drive, all thanks to one man who said “yes” to preaching the scriptures 80 years ago. By taking that step of faith, Emmanuel Faith Community Church (EFCC) was born in 1939. The church quickly grew out of its early locations in Escondido at Central Elementary, the Women’s Club House, and the church building at the corner of Escondido Boulevard and 7th Avenue, before moving to its current location on East 17th Avenue in Escondido. This upcoming decade will set a new tone for EFCC, as Senior Pastor Dennis Keating has passed the leadership baton to new Lead Pastor, Ryan Paulson. Keating, who has served at Emmanuel Faith for 40 years, began in 1979 by pastoring college students for 10 years before becoming the Pastor of Adult Ministries. He then transitioned to the position of Senior Pastor in 1993 after the passing of long-time Senior Pastor, Dr. Richard Strauss. After 26 years in this role, Keating stepped down as Senior Pastor on September 22. During the September 20-22 weekend, the EFCC congregation celebrated how God has worked through him to impact lives through various small and large events. As Keating wrote in a recent letter to the congregation, “It’s been an absolute joy to see how the Holy Spirit has worked. He’s used His Word to save souls, to grow believers, to set people free, and bring healing to many stuck in their spiritual journey. We’ve trained lay leaders and pastors; reached out with the gospel into our community and world, sending out missionaries and planting churches; by faith, we’ve taken risks and made changes. What an honor to see what He’s done in and through us. Glory to God. But it’s time for Ryan Paulson to have the privilege of leading EFCC forward into our next season of ministry. I am thrilled with how God has us back together and wholeheartedly endorse him.” On June 2, 95% of EFCC’s voting members affirmed

the Board of Elders’ unanimous recommendation to call Ryan Paulson as EFCC’s new Lead Pastor. Paulson, who has a Master of Divinity from Bethel Seminary, wrote to the elder board upon his acceptance, “The church body’s affirmation and your unanimous endorsement have created a sense of excitement in our family about what God has planned for us at EFCC. We are excited to be a part of helping to chart the course for future impact, growth, and helping people live in the way of Jesus with the heart of Jesus.” Paulson was EFCC’s college pastor from 2007 to 2012 and was then called to South Fellowship Church in Littleton, Colorado, where he was Lead Pastor for seven years. In 2018, when Pastor Keating and the Elders of EFCC began the extensive search for who would fill Keating’s position, there were 3,700 people who requested more information on the job posting with 172 candidates considered. After multiple interviews with the EFCC pastor search committee and board members and Elders, Paulson was chosen. Paulson started in August, just in time for the parent orientation of the brand-new Emmanuel Faith Preschool, which currently has openings for part- and full-time students, ages 3-5. The mission of the Emmanuel Faith Community Church Preschool is “to partner with parents and families to guide preschoolers to know the love of Jesus Christ while experiencing a high-quality, developmentally appropriate, biblically-based education in a loving, safe and nurturing environment.” EFCC is more than a name and a building — it is a communi-

Escondido Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with numerous Partners and Sponsors Presents...
Rising Star Scholarship Program By Mona Durney
The Rising Star Students of the Month program’s mission is to bring the community together to honor local high school seniors for demonstrating character, integrity, love of learning, involvement in school and community activities and/or ability to overcome challenging life circumstances without compromising their education. These are students who make a difference in their homes, schools and communities with sincerity and passion. Each student is eligible to apply for a Rising Star Scholarship, generously provided by local businesses and organizations who believe in investing in our youth. Each of our participating seven local high schools selects an honoree for the Rising Star Students of the Month program. These students are celebrated at a Continental Breakfast Meeting generously hosted, for this year, by the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. At the awards breakfasts, each student is recognized by their principal and teacher, as well as receiving accolades from elected officials and representatives, and community business leaders. The students have the opportunity at the breakfast to tell their own story, and once you have attended a meeting and heard the amazing things that these student scholars are doing, you walk away with a greater appreciation for what our Escondido High Schools are accomplishing and what fine young people attend our schools! Our first meeting for this year was held on October 9, 2019. How did this program start? Rising Stars is growing in Southern California, thanks to the inspiration of Sally Myers. The Wonders of Escondido... and Aunt Gabriella City Shticker By Irv Erdos
Welcome to Escondido, Aunt Gabriella. Gabriella is my wife’s aunt from Flatbush by way of Sicily. She decided she wanted to spend Christmas with us, which according to my calendar is technically on December 25, but by Aunt Gabriella’s calculation, Christmas is when Costco displays its holiday décor, so mid-September. If Christmas begins in September, it begs the question, when does it end? I only ask because, according to Aunt Gabriella, that’s when she said she plans to return home. Once again, according to my calendar, Christmas ends at 11:59 p.m. on the night of December 25. But the date and time remain somewhat obscure in the mind of Aunt Gabriella judging by her return reservation, which does not exist. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting we haven’t been enjoying her company over the past few months. This is her first visit here and we’ve been eager to impress her with our beautiful Hidden Valley. This was a tall order because Aunt Gabriella had traveled around the globe before finally settling in New York City back in the 1980s. “Do you have what would be considered a famous landmark here in Escondido?” Aunt Gabriella inquired. “Like for example, in New York we have the famous Statue of Liberty.” Aunt Gabriella went on to tell us about her many travels wherein she was able to see some of the most famous statues on the planet including the Sphinx in Egypt, Venus de Milo at the Louvre in Paris, and the celebrated bronze sculpture known as The Thinker at the Rodin Museum.
said she plans to put the picture in her travel album along with the photo of her with Christ the Redeemer. I’m happy to report, Aunt Gabriella is finally adapting to life here. It has been a challenge because for nearly four decades she has been accustomed to living in the major metropolis known as the Big Apple. I recall that time, just the day after she arrived, when she started to walk out the door with a loaf of bread. “Where are you going, Aunt Gabriella?” I queried. “I’m going to take a walk and feed the pigeons,” she replied. “It’s part of my daily routine.” “We don’t have any pigeons here in Escondido,” I explained. “No pigeons?” she shrieked. “I never heard of such a thing.” She didn’t exactly articulate it, but it was clear she felt that there was something very uncivil about a city with no pigeons.
She also told us about the time she traveled to Florence in Italy to see Michelangelo’s David. “It’s really quite a magnificent sight to behold,” she said of the renowned artist’s masterpiece. “It’s made of marble and it was sculpted more than 500 years ago. Do you have any such landmarks here in Escondido?” she questioned.
“New York has pigeons,” she proclaimed in a tone suggesting a city doesn’t achieve prominence without what some of my Brooklyn buddies call flying rodents.
So, I drove her over to the corner of Juniper and East Valley Parkway where The Joor Muffler Man is exhibited.
“We have hummingbirds,” I explained.
“It was fashioned in the 1960s by an artist known as Steve using a medium called fiberglass,” I explained. Aunt Gabriella stepped out of the car and asked me to take a photo of her and the famous statue that depicts a man in overalls holding a muffler. She Escondido Magazine

“Paris has pigeons,” she continued. “So does London. Rome too. A real city has pigeons!”
“You mean the birds that fly around and try to stab you in the eye?” she questioned. “They’re quite harmless,” I defended. “So, if I go out and throw bread around, what’s going to show up?”

“Ants,” I replied. “I’m very disappointed,” she lamented. “I’ll just have to take my walk without pigeons.”
“Why don’t you just walk down to the end of the driveway and get the mail for me? That way I know you’d be safe.” “This is why I came to California? To get the mail?”
“That’s not a very good idea,” I explained, “because we have no sidewalks here.”
“If you really want to take a walk, I’ll drive you into town. That’s where the sidewalks are.”
“So, where would I find sidewalks?”
“Welcome to California,” Aunt Gabriella said mockingly. “He’s driving me to take a walk.”
“In town.” “And where are we, in the jungle?” “We’re in the rural part of Escondido called the county,” I explained. “So, what’s the big deal? I’ll just watch out for cars.” “It’s not just cars I’m worried about,” I said. “There are coyotes around. Even mountain lions.”
But that was in the past. By now, Escondido has grown on her. Today she happily leans back in her favorite patio chaise as she swaddles herself in the sun while looking out at the grove-covered mountains. It all sounds good except that she won’t buy a return ticket. Irv Erdos is a humor writer. His column “Ham on Wry” appears regularly in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
“Do they like bread?” “You can’t just go around feeding animals,” I explained. “They’re wild and dangerous!” “And you don’t call that a jungle?” Escondido Magazine

‘Pointed in the Right Direction’ Escondido’s K-8 Superintendent Reflects on Five Years of Progress – and the Road Ahead By Susana Villegas
“It’s all about perseverance, and for me, it’s going to be about ensuring that all students – regardless of where they come from, whatever challenges they have – will have help overcoming whatever obstacles they have.” Those are the words of Dr. Luis Rankins-Ibarra in 2014, as he assumed the job of superintendent of the Escondido Union School District (EUSD). Over five years, the EUSD Board of Trustees and Rankins-Ibarra, who earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego and CSU San Marcos, have focused the elementary district on four main goals with notable success. On each of its four goals – raising student achievement, creating a positive culture that embraces and celebrates Escondido’s diversity, ensuring a safe and secure environment, and remaining fiscally solvent – EUSD has made great progress and is well-positioned to meet the district’s future challenges. Five years into his tenure as superintendent, Rankins-Ibarra looks back at the support of many stakeholders who have helped set the course for the eighth-largest elementary school district in California. EUSD operates 23 schools that serve more than 15,800 students, 79 percent of whom are from low-income homes and 43 percent are English learners. The district manages an operating budget of a little more than $200 million. “The list of the people who deserve thanks for the educational progress that we’ve made as an Escondido community is long,” Rankins-Ibarra said. “The Board of Education, our 1,900 dedicated employees, the parents and the Escondido Council PTA, the Escondido Education Foundation, the supporters of Proposition E, our many enrichment community and corporate partners, and our students – they not only deserve our thanks, we remain accountable to them, and we continue to move in the right direction.” Over the past five years, the district’s investments in teacher training, student supports, and technology, as well as growing partnerships with community-based enrichment organizations, have yielded positive results in student achievement. Four years of student testing data show that EUSD students continue to make gains in both English language arts

and mathematics. In addition, the gap in EUSD between the percentage of students who are proficient or advanced in these areas versus those who are not is shrinking faster than the statewide average. EUSD was assigned a yellow ranking in the new California School Dashboard, well above the state’s average orange ranking and the red ranking of 21 of San Diego County’s 42 school districts, flagging them for technical assistance. The district also has redoubled its efforts on safety, completing perimeter fencing, controlled access, and security camera installation at all of its campuses.
“Our vigilance regarding the safety of our students, teachers, staff, and parents has never been higher, and we share that commitment to safety with many others in the Escondido community,” Rankins-Ibarra said. In 2018, new partnerships through the Escondido Leaders Collaborative with the Escondido Police Department and local public school districts, charter schools, and private schools have added a shared school resource officer to support all local schools. EUSD also has partnered with Sandy Hook Promise to bring the “Say Something” reporting tool and other programs to all of its schools.
lights, goals, and challenges with stakeholders. “I look forward to the State of the District Address every year to tell our inspiring story, to thank everyone who makes that happen, and to speak openly and transparently about the challenges ahead,” he said. “We are pointed in the right direction and making great progress, but we still have a lot of work to do – together as a community – to support our momentum in student achievement and high-quality facilities that contribute to our great city.”
The quality of EUSD learning environments has improved greatly thanks to the fiscally prudent use of Proposition E funds. The $182.1 million bond was approved by the voters of Escondido in November 2014 to begin the long-term work of supporting the future of EUSD’s facilities. Rankins-Ibarra, who served as chief business officer in his previous district, has been a fixture at community meetings to update the public on the district’s judicious use of Proposition E funds on much-needed modernization projects.

The second phase of Proposition E modernization is underway, with projects at Del Dios Academy of Arts and Sciences, Mission Middle, and Orange Glen Elementary. The district’s commitment to accessibility and timeliness of reports and other information on its bond program has earned it a perfect score on the annual School Bond Transparency Report Card from the San Diego County Taxpayers Association. The district’s progress continues thanks to its collaborative and transparent approach. In addition, Rankins-Ibarra’s annual State of the District Address serves to share EUSD high-

The 5 Top Reasons Escondido Homeowners Remodel their Kitchens By George Brown
Over the years, I have spoken with local homeowners as to why they decided to do certain projects around their homes. As an Escondido homeowner myself, I know the list can be endless, but some ventures can be more exciting than others. I thought it might be fun to share some of the reasons people decide to do a kitchen remodel, one of the most gratifying projects of all. “I Want to Add Modern Features” Those who truly use the kitchen they have, over time, come to realize that it has some shortcomings. Considering that most kitchens in our area are 20+ years old before they are remodeled it is not surprising that how we use kitchens today doesn’t quite match how they were originally designed. Think about driving a 20-year-old car: not enough cup holders, outside mirrors that don’t adjust remotely, no navigation, no back-up camera, no digital gauges, and no hands-free cell phone. You can still get where you are going but is it convenient, comfortable and enjoyable to drive in? No. Updating a kitchen with more modern convenience features can make a world of difference. Soft-close mechanisms make the kitchen quieter and function smoothly. Easy to clean finishes both on the exterior and interior reduce maintenance. Adjustable shelves and roll-out trays allow you to personalize the cabinets the way you use them. The options for cabinet features and accessories are almost endless: message centers, power recharging stations, lift-up appliance cabinets, and wine cubbies, roll-out hidden trash cans, built-in spice racks – think about how much these things can enhance your life. We haven’t even talked about the color Escondido Magazine
options, design styles and configuration possibilities. Modernizing really means updating the kitchen to more closely match your personal tastes and the way you use the kitchen. You get to select the door style that calls out to you, choose a color/finish that says this is your space, and make the decision about what cabinets will be where. Kitchen designers today are skilled at learning about YOU so they can put what you really want into the kitchen. “I Need More Storage Space” Some kitchens are plagued with small cabinets created by a poor design. A few months ago, one homeowner was showing me their kitchen and complaining about the lack of drawer storage. As she pointed out the cabinets, I was surprised to count 5 cabinets that were only 9” wide; she had only one drawer wide enough to put anything in! If you have a kitchen like this, you know what I am talking about. Another frustration in older kitchens (and there are lots of those in Escondido) are what we refer to today as blind corners - cabinets where you have to reach way into the back of them. Ultimately, they are so inconvenient to access that stuff in the back is just forgotten. Some would say these areas can be used for storage. But most just say it is dead, useless space and they want a more reasonable way to use those cabinets. By replacing the cabinets and creating a new cabinet layout, adjustments can be made to create more practical storage space. Over the years our buying habits have changed. We now purchase items in multi-packs where we need to store 6 or 8 rolls of paper towels. Beverages come in counts of 24 and 48. Even individual bottles of soda, salad dressing, canned goods, cereals and juices are all much larger. Everyone needs a place to store these items, adding cabinets or a pantry might be the solution. In other instances, the kitchen is just small for the size of the house or family living in it. A family of six making do in a 10x10 kitchen where only two people can move around without bumping into each other takes the fun out of cooking. Instances where no two appliances can be opened at the same time make a kitchen uncomfortable to work in. In larger homes having a kitchen separated from the living area makes |

it difficult to socialize while entertaining. In these cases, homeowners may opt to do a complete re-design incorporating the kitchen space into adjoining existing living space, and some owners have added additional space to their smaller homes to create the space they need for a really functional kitchen.
Being aware that someone else is having work done can put your mind at ease that it is a good thing to do. Not being the first to get a large project done actually gives confidence to some people. Whatever the motivation, you could be the next one on the block featured in “House Beautiful.” Also, seeing the results of someone else’s remodel can give you ideas of what can be done and affirm that remodeling can yield spectacular results. Have faith, it will come out nice.
“My Neighbor Just Remodeled Their Kitchen – I’m Jealous” Sometimes it just takes a little motivation to get you started. Ever notice that when one house on your street is up for sale then shortly thereafter another one pops up, and then another? At any one time in a subdivision there are several people talking about or considering selling, they just need a little nudge. The same is true for remodeling.
“I Hate My Kitchen” We all have lived in a home where the previous owner decided the look, design and style of the kitchen. We just move into the home accepting the kitchen as-is. Eventually, you come to the conclusion that you just really don’t like anything about the kitchen. The color and/or style of the cabinets aren’t your taste and don’t match the rest of your decorating. Continued on page 14 Escondido Magazine

The doors open the wrong way, the drawers fall out of their recess when opened, and that cabinet over the refrigerator that is set so far back is now just a backstop for what you put in front of it. Not to mention that no matter how much you clean those kitchen countertop tiles with all that grout, you just can’t get them clean. The reality is you just hate being in the kitchen. “I Plan to Sell My Home and Want an Edge Over the Competition” We’ve all heard that kitchens and bathrooms are what sell homes. Realtors will tell you that an updated home will sell faster. A real estate appraiser will tell you that updated homes are worth more. Many people remodel their home in preparation to sell. One of my customers contacted my company to do a complete remodel of two bathrooms and update the kitchen. After the completion of the work it didn’t take long for their home to sell, and they received many favorable comments. But it isn’t always necessary to make that large of an investment in preparation to sell. Even doing a “freshening” to a kitchen can make a difference: Replacing the countertops, refinishing the cabinets, replacing the hardware, adding some pull-outs, changing your light fixtures, installing new flooring, or painting the walls all can make a big impact for less money than a full remodel. Whatever your reason, one of these 5 or another, a kitchen remodel can be very satisfying and rewarding. Take a deep breath, start with a plan and have some fun!

Escondido’s Inaugural VetFest Highlighted 100 Years of Hometown Heroes
At 9:30 am, the VetFest Parade stepped off down Grand Avenue, beginning at Escondido Boulevard, making a U-turn at Juniper and returning to Escondido Boulevard on the opposite side of the center median. Various pieces of military equipment were displayed at the Maple Street Plaza along West Valley Parkway. Merchants along Grand Avenue decorated their store fronts for the parade and viewers of the parade voted for their favorite displays via their smart phones. At the American Legion Post 149 at 230 East Park Avenue, a free BBQ, games, displays, and a ceremony honoring our veterans rounded out the afternoon.
By Nina Deerfield and Michael Frank
Escondido’s first VetFest was an opportunity to honor our veterans as well as celebrate the centennial anniversary of the American Legion. Both the American Legion and Escondido’s American Legion J.B. Clark Post 149 were founded in 1919 and have served veterans and their families for 100 years. Centennial Celebration on Veterans Day On November 11th, Post 149 kicked off the first Escondido VetFest. VetFest was North San Diego County’s only Veterans Day celebration combined with a parade. The full day of activities highlighted 100 years of hometown heroes and their contributions to our city, state and nation. Escondido’s Mayor Paul McNamara, a retired Marine Corps Colonel, suggested the city begin a tradition of honoring its veterans. McNamara turned to Post Commander Michael Frank and American Legion Auxiliary Member Nina Deerfield to co-organize the event. The Brothers of Six, a group of amateur historians dedicated to historic preservation in Escondido and North County, stepped up to volunteer their time. Post Commander Frank stated, “It’s our way of honoring our veterans, telling everyone our story, and letting people know the importance of military service.” Deerfield added, “We’ve worked to make this inaugural event the ‘go-to’ veterans event for this year and in the years to come.” Kicking off the celebration at 8:00 am, Maple Street Plaza offered information booths, and choral performance of patriotic songs.

American Legion J.B. Clark Post 149: A little history In November of 1919, after the formation of the American Legion in Paris, and after the first national convention held in Minneapolis, Post 149 formed in Escondido. The Post was named after J.B. Clark, an Escondido native and a naval officer who died while on active duty in January of 1919. The first location of Post 149 was on 2nd Avenue near Broadway. In 1956, the Post moved to its current location on Park Avenue, next to the Park Avenue Senior Center and National Guard Armory. J.B. Clark After graduating the Naval Academy in 1904 and serving aboard destroyers during the time of President Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet, J.B. Clark retired from naval service and moved to Escondido to raise chickens, as he told his longtime friend and Escondido resident, Lloyd Woodnut. During his time living on Escondido’s Park Hill, J.B. was pressed into service locally to lead a Home Guard unit to protect the city against Pancho Villa who was raiding towns north of the Mexican border. When World War I began, J.B. was once again pressed into naval service and served on destroyers until the time of his death. After the war, J.B.’s widow sold the property and moved to Arizona. The Legion today The American Legion was founded on four pillars: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children and Youth. Each of these pillars guides a number of programs benefiting the nation’s veterans, its service members, their families, and the youth of America. “There are many fine organizations and institutions out there that provide a wealth of information, assistance, guidance, and services to veterans in need,” explained Michael Frank, Commander of Post 149. “A local American Legion Post can
provide many of these services or can guide a veteran to an organization that can provide assistance not available locally.” The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill. Hundreds of local American Legion programs and activities strengthen the nation one community at a time. The Operation Comfort Warriors program supports recovering wounded warriors and their families, providing them with “comfort items” and the kind of support that makes a hospital feel a little bit more like home. The Legion also raises millions of dollars in donations at the local, state and national levels to help veterans and their families during times of need and provide college scholarship opportunities. Once someone joins their local Post, they are instructed in the history of the organization, the Four Pillars, familiarized with the programs in which the Post is involved, the various committees, and officer billets available. “For most members though, the biggest surprise and benefit of joining a local Post is the sense of family and belonging,” says Frank. “Fitting in with a group of veterans with similar experiences, concerns, and understanding is key; the Post becomes a second home to many – a place to meet with friends, listen to music, be active in the community, have a BBQ, sing karaoke, enjoy a beer, watch a football game, or play a game of pool or darts.” For information about American Legion J.B. I heard someone tell a joke recently about the rapture and that the only people that were left were car dealers. This conjures up notions of the slick-talking, morally compromised used car salesman who is only concerned with making a buck today. We chuckle because we understand the stigma, and while there is an element of truth in all humor, I’d like to posit that there is a lot that has changed in the car business and there are many who are choosing to operate in a different way.

It is no secret that the car business has lagged behind the rest of the retail world when it comes to the buying and ownership experiences. Old ways of thinking and old processes have prevailed for too long. The industry is shifting, though. We have new ways to buy or try a car and new ways to drive (or not drive) cars. Like the residential real estate industry, the internet has changed how people research and find what they are looking for. Dealerships have had to evolve to remain relevant in this new world. However, the more things change, the more we find that they remain the same. While our guests certainly use the internet as part of their search for a new or pre-owned vehicle, we find that they still want a human that can be a trusted guide in making what is often the second largest purchase of their lives. Cheers had it right, we want to go where people know our name. It is a relational business. Further, we are sensory beings and we still want to see, touch, hear, and smell the vehicles we are interested in. I recently test drove a new Lexus GX SUV and just pushing the start button (another thing that has changed) and hearing the engine roar gave me a rush and stimulated thoughts of all the adventures and possibilities that could await.
Cars are woven into the fabric of almost everything we do. They are still the prominent means of getting around – commuting to work, taking kids to school and sports, or taking a vacation to the mountains. Some people are now using converted cargo vans to do all three in style and comfort. Cars are an extension of our identity and personal brand. They are a blending of form and function and they say something about who we are and what is important to us.
ota Carlsbad’s (also owned by Judy Jones-Cone) 40+ year reputation as the relaxed and friendly place, Lexus Escondido has merged automotive retail with hospitality to create what we have termed AutoJoyment. We are working to change the negative stigma one guest at a time by treating our guests fairly and pampering them while we pamper their cars. We want everyone to feel that time at The Centre is always Time Well Spent.
The car business is also vital to our economy – globally, nationally, at a state level, and locally. Sales tax revenue from the auto industry generates in excess of $100 billion to state government tax revenues (California, of course, being the leader). Sales tax funds from auto dealerships help build roads, parks, and employ the people that help keep us safe.
Escondido has battled its own stigmas over the years. I have to say, though, that Escondido is becoming more and more a true City of Choice. Escondido is filled with hardworking, community-minded people who help make the city an incredible place to live, work, and play. The city leadership and staff walk the talk of supporting local businesses and making decisions that honor the great heritage that Escondido has while also embracing the difficult changes required to prepare for the future. It is our pleasure to work in Escondido and we strive every day to serve the people of Escondido and the surrounding areas well.
Prior to being hired at Lexus Escondido, I had no experience in the car business. While my role has had more to do with elements outside of the core, day-to-day car business (real estate and hospitality), I find that my becoming an accidental “car guy” gets more and more fun and interesting. Car dealerships are fascinating – they are a bunch of businesses within a business (new car department, pre-owned department, service, parts, finance and insurance). There are so many levers to pull and so many things to know and stay on top of – it is a huge and rewarding challenge to be sure. Taking a picture of a guest with a big smile standing next to their brand-new car with a red bow on it is truly rewarding. This being a new foray into automotive, I have to say that I couldn’t be happier to be associated with the Lexus brand and to be working for Judy Jones-Cone. Lexus is the perennial leader and award-winner in luxury reliability (2019 MOTORTREND IntelliChoice Best Overall Value for a Premium Brand). Their cars are beautifully designed, masterfully built, fun to drive, and can’t be beat in terms of cost of ownership. Above all that, it is the people associated with the brand that truly set it apart. Whenever Lexus owners find out where I work, they pretty much always launch into a story about how much they love their salesperson or service consultant -- how that person knows their kids’ names, writes handwritten notes to them on special occasions, and how they’ll never change brands because the people at their Lexus dealership are so incredibly professional and caring. It’s awesome when you hear stories of Lexus dealers living up to the Lexus covenant that we “treat each customer as we would a guest in our own home.” Every place that people gather, work, shop, and play has changed. A visit to a mall today versus 10 years ago is remarkably different with new amenities, experiences, and comforts around every corner. Along those lines, a visit to Lexus Escondido is truly a destination experience and can include fine dining at Vintana Wine + Dine, a manicure at RockNHair Salon, a handcrafted latte from Culture Craft Coffee + Espresso, an art experience at Stephen Fishwick Fine Art Gallery, picking up the perfect gift for someone special from JJ’s Boutique, a free home valuation from Andrew Arroyo Real Estate (AARE), a quick respite in a massage chair in the private library, working on your short game in the golf simulator, a concert with friends, and more. Building on Toy-
While we love and have a passion for cars and the car business, at the end of the day it is a vehicle (pun intended) to allow us to serve others, spread joy, and give to those in need in our community and around the world. The person who told the joke mentioned at the beginning of this article, finished by saying that Judy Jones-Cone would not be one of the car dealers left after the rapture based on his experience with her and her businesses. That also made us smile.

Forgotten Barrel Breathes New Life into Historic Escondido Winery
Forgotten Barrel’s vineyards of Muscat of Alexandria grapes and entrance to the Tasting Room. Grove closed escrow on the property in 2016 and began a major renovation to modernize the winery and preserve its original character. That effort included maintaining a halfacre vineyard of 25-year old Muscat of Alexandria grapes, which was inherited with the property. Muscat of Alexandria is a white wine grape that grows exceptionally well in the region, and it is the variety that attracted George Ferrara to Escondido in 1920. The Ferrara Winery, which was home to three generations of winemakers, was designated a historical site by the state of California in 1971. Perfecting the Blend of Old and New Forgotten Barrel has forged two perfect pairings since settling into its historic property - one with veteran winemaker John Eppler, who will usher Forgotten Barrel into the future, and another with Tony Ferrara, a third generation Ferrara who connects Forgotten Barrel with its winery’s past.
By the City of Escondido Communications Department When life gives you lemons, why not trade them for grapes and make some wine? That’s what local entrepreneur and real estate investor Rodger Grove did. Grove, who has worked in commercial real estate for 35 years, started a small winery as a diversionary investment when the market crashed in 2009. Forgotten Barrel got its start purchasing declassified wines from known producers and selling them to select restaurants and wine clubs under the Forgotten Barrel label. After some success running a small tasting room in Sorrento Valley and growing wine club membership, Grove searched for new ways to help turn a profit and for a more appropriate, permanent home for the business. When a broker introduced him to a historic three-acre vineyard for sale in Escondido, he had no interest in taking on a project that grand. But after a few trips through the old Ferrara Winery property, Grove was sold on revitalizing Escondido’s oldest grape-growing estate. “The city was very committed to preserving the site because of its significance in the history of Escondido agriculture,” Grove said. “They did everything possible to get somebody in who would restore the historic winery and make it operational again.”

John came to the conclusion that what we had going on here felt a lot like Napa 40 years ago,” Grove said. “I am a wine drinker and a wine collector, but I wouldn’t invest a nickel in my own winemaking talents. But I do trust John’s talents and he’s just been an amazing asset to the business.” Grove and his team at Forgotten Barrel have been working with local grapes from Valley Center, Pauma Valley, and San Pasqual. It’s been a three-year long search for the best grapes in San Diego County and Grove predicts that Syrah is a variety that San Diego will become well known for. County Syrah, he is confident that it rivals some of the best to come out of Paso Robles. Forgotten Barrel currently has 15 different wines from Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Santa Ynez, and San Diego. This year, it also secured some historic old Zinfandel from Rancho Cucamonga, which is hard to source since much of that land has been torn up and developed. Forgotten Barrel is obtaining the vines through a relationship that was partially brokered by Tony Ferrara. Old Ferrara Winery signs and Ferrara family photos are proudly displayed throughout Forgotten Barrel’s tasting room, and much of the winery’s original farming and winemaking equipment has been restored for modern-day use. Forgotten Barrel has made it a priority to pay homage to the winery’s heritage while pursuing San Diego County’s best grapes and producing the region’s most notable wines under the new Forgotten Barrel brand. Ferrara is a regular fixture at the winery and enjoys sharing stories about his life on the winery. He has prepared authentic Italian meals for Forgotten Barrel’s staff and is a guest at quarterly wine club pick up parties and the winery’s annual Christmas party. In a way, Forgotten Barrel is carrying out the Ferrara family legacy and it has forged a unique bond between Grove and Ferrara. So much so that Forgotten Barrel received an award for historic preservation from the Escondido City Council at last year’s State of the City event.
Escondido Wineries Blossom California is the number one wine producing state in the U.S. and the fourth largest winemaker in the world. The wine industry is vital to San Diego’s economy and it continues to grow. In 2016, the economic impact of San Diego’s wine industry was valued at $30.4 million and supported 697 jobs. In 2018, San Diego wine grape crops were farmed across 1,642 acres, compared to 365 acres just 10 years prior. Grove heads up the recently formed Escondido Wine Region Alliance, a consortium of 21 Escondido wineries seeking to raise awareness for the region’s thriving and diverse wine industry. The group is also working to revitalize Grape Day, a celebration of Escondido’s grape harvest that originated in 1908. It has been managed by The Escondido History Center since 1996, but has struggled to stay afloat in recent years. The Alliance is working with city officials on a plan for a new “Harvest Festival” to celebrate Escondido’s Grape Day in the Spring 2020.

The Future of Wildlife in North County Depends on "The Missing Lynx" By Nathan Serrato The Escondido Creek Conservancy has launched “The Missing Lynx” campaign to establish permanently protected wildlife corridors in North San Diego County. After successfully acquiring 975 acres as part of their “Save 1000 Acres” campaign, the conservancy has shifted its focus to connecting the missing links, so wildlife can move freely between preserved areas, and protecting those linkages in perpetuity. “Between climate change, pollution, and human expansion into wild areas, native plants and wildlife around the world are struggling to survive,” says Executive Director Ann Van Leer. “We want San Diego County to retain the natural beauty that has drawn humans here for centuries, but to do so, we must be dedicated to connecting the missing links between preserved lands.” Connecting wildlands is crucial for wildlife, especially large mammals like mule deer (Odocoileus heminus) and mountain lions (Puma concolor), which typically have home ranges of more than 100 square miles. other resources, while also improving genetic variation. Connecting breeding populations of a species increases their ability to adapt to their changing environment, which is especially important as we begin to witness the effects of climate change. “We manage preserves on either side of the I-15,” says Hannah Walchak, the Conservancy’s Land Conservation Manager. “It’s crazy to think that I can easily drive between these preserves, while the unique populations of mountain lions on each side are unlikely to meet because of a lack of connectivity.” Since 1991, The Escondido Creek Conservancy has helped preserve over 7,000 acres in North San Diego County. Over the last three years, with the creation of the Mountain Meadow Preserve and the George Sardina, MD Preserve, the “Save 1000 Acres” campaign protected an additional 975 acres. While these are important cornerstone properties, “The Missing Lynx” campaign will prioritize land acquisitions in areas that are contiguous to other preserved lands in the Escondido Creek watershed. The Escondido Creek Conservancy is seeking public support to protect and preserve these “missing lynx” to reduce conflicts with human activities, help North San Diego County retain its wild character, and give our native species a chance to live, and live wild.
