The USC International ArtIsTS Fellowship
First organized in 1883, the USC Roski School of Fine Arts is the oldest art school in Southern California. With a diverse faculty group of internationally recognized artists and educators, the School offers a supportive environment and progressive approach for experimentation in all forms of visual arts.
As the influence of the Pacific Rim rises, the world’s artistic vision is being transformed by globalization, revolutions in communication, growing diversity, evolving concepts of democracy and changing ideas surrounding creativity and individual expression. Nowhere is this seen, felt and heard more than in Los Angeles, the creative capitol of the Pacific Rim.
A new international arts opportunity The University of Southern California not only recognizes this new global reality, we wish to advance it. To make our ambitions clear, we are announcing the creation of the USC International Artists, a graduate fellowship for promising artists from across the Pacific Rim and key emerging societies of the world. The fellows will form a global network of impactful artists that will continue well beyond their residence at USC. In launching this Fellowship, we are creating a new international arts community in the global conservatory of Los Angeles — a community that celebrates global perspectives, artistic exchange and academic values. Taking advantage of Los Angeles as a global center for the arts and new media, we offer a unique environment for young artists and humanists to study and work along Los Angeles’ vibrant downtown corridor.
Located at the center of Los Angeles, the USC Thornton School of Music is the collegiate partner of choice for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the GRAMMY Foundation and The Recording Academy, to name a few.
The USC School of Cinematic Arts instills creative, scholarly and entrepreneurial principles and practices of film, television and interactive media. The faculty are focused on inspiring and preparing students to become leaders in the field.
How will the fellowship support these students? These fellowships will allow emerging artists to work with our internationally acclaimed faculty in any one of USC’s five preeminent arts schools — Architecture, Cinematic Arts, Fine Arts, Music and Theater, along with the Fisher Museum where historic, modern and contemporary art is on display. All tuition, fees, housing and living expenses will be paid by the fellowship allowing the student to focus on creativity and producing new work. Further, these fellows will have regular and planned opportunities to interact with their peers from the five arts disciplines, as well as vibrant artists in Los Angeles
Why USC? USC is a global microcosm set inside a global metropolis. We enroll more international students than any other university in the United States, an attribute mirrored in Los Angeles which is home to established international communities from around the world. USC has international offices in six cities along the Pacific Rim and Asia — in Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, Mumbai and Mexico City. We are a global institution committed to the notion that artistic practice and creativity are crucial to our mission and to the future of a world that is growing smaller before our eyes.
FIVE PREEMINENT art schools. Together USC’s arts schools enroll well over 5000 graduate and undergraduate students in its degree programs and, including the Fisher Museum, sponsor more than 1,000 recitals, performances, exhibitions, screenings, and lectures each year. We challenge all of our students to engage in the arts and humanities through curriculum, lectures and events. Our arts schools feed the global conservatory of Los Angeles.
One of the major strengths of the USC School of Architecture is its relationship to a community of practicing architects. USC founded the first accredited school of architecture in Southern California, with 3000 graduates, many of whom have stayed in Southern California to practice. The diverse perspective on architecture promulgated by the School’s faculty has attracted a broad spectrum of supporters from the building industry and the allied professions.
USC is at home in Los Angeles.
Why you and us together?
To study and live in Los Angeles is to learn to be at home in the world. As you walk onto USC campuses or traverse Los Angeles, you are struck by this region’s global character. International students enrich USC’s culture, exposing all students to world views, conventions, religious and cultural traditions and novel modes of artistic practice that are new and different from those they have known. Each space and program, along with our students and faculty, reminds us that global connections are a unique USC strength.
As a USC International Artists Fellow, you will be enriched in several ways. Our principal objective is to give you outstanding training in art and to support your growth as an artist, filmmaker, actor, director, musician, or architect. Because we have five arts schools on one urban campus, you will enjoy the benefits of proximity and access to several of the arts. And because we are a comprehensive university, you will be part of an intellectual community that includes the arts and humanities, the natural and social sciences, and the professions.
Where artistic practice flourishes, cultures come alive. You will be part of a global arts community in an international metropolis. By interacting with fellow artists and scholars from around the world, you will develop a global perspective that will inform your art. By living, studying and working in Los Angeles, you will see how the local and the global intersect, experiencing the international in a local context. You will create the future through art made of sound, image, space, movement, material, voice and words.
The USC School of Theatre is recognized internationally as a leader in theatre education. Ranked among the top five undergraduate theatre programs in the nation, the School blends artistic training in a conservatory environment with all the academic advantages of a major research university.
