BEING AN EAGLE IS A VERY SPECIAL HONOR.

It means you are part of a nurturing, academically rigorous community that will support you in following your dreams. It means you will be challenged by an outstanding faculty and have opportunities to engage in our fine arts, athletics, and outdoor education programs at every level. You will find your voice and leave your mark through leadership and service-learning projects alongside other students who become lifelong friends. We hope by sharing a few stories from the Class of 2018 that you will be inspired to start the journey of becoming an Eagle and picture yourself at The Episcopal School of Dallas.

Science is full-contact at ESD, whether it’s examining bugs with a professional entomologist as a Beginner, harvesting eggs in ESD’s chicken coop in Middle School, or exploring real hearts with a Dallas County Medical Examiner in Upper School.

“Our AP science courses are not just about the words in a textbook.

In our state-of-the-art science labs, I got to do the hands-on work to get behind and uncover the concept and theories we learned in our curriculum. ESD believes that bringing outside science

experts into the classrooms and labs can demonstrate more than any textbook, and I totally agree. My science teachers have encouraged me to think and work outside of the box, continually pushing to take a science concept or theory further which I think will really benefit me in the long run.”

All Saints Chapel is considered the heart of ESD’s campus. All faiths and beliefs are welcomed and respected as students, faculty, and staff gather as a community for daily chapel.

“Being a senior on Vestry, All Saints Chapel was a special place for me on campus. Daily Chapel was the only time the entire Upper School was together every single day, and I loved our time there.

It gave me, as well as other students, an opportunity to pause and reflect. The Episcopalian religion is woven into ESD’s core identity, and so is acknowledging and learning from our diverse community, both of which I got to contribute to as a Vestry member. I loved being able to fill our chapel time with interesting chapel talks that encouraged conversation.”

With fly fishing being a big part of my life, the ESD Quarry was my favorite place on campus.

It was the perfect place to immerse myself in nature while still being at school. The Quarry serves many purposes on campus and is a frequentlyused outdoor learning environment for all ages in science, art, and English. Behind the Quarry is an outdoor chapel.

Whether it was a quick cast after chapel or a whole hour of fishing during study hall, the Quarry was my escape. Being at the Quarry made me feel like I was out on one of my regular fishing trips where I didn’t have to worry about the demands of school or sports.

Aly Molubhoy The University of Texas at Austin Math has always been my strong suit. I was in honors math classes since I started at ESD in sixth grade and was inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors Society shortly after my freshman year. My senior year, I was in the hardest math

The Fourth Grade Leadership Institute instills the values of humility, collaboration, and legacy through experiential learning, research, and reflection. It culminates with an all-day, hands-on seminar on leadership designed by members of the senior class.

The math classes and teachers here have really helped shape what I’m planning to do in college and beyond. BE AN EAGLE

The Outdoor Education Program is a longstanding centerpiece of the ESD experience. Wolf Run Outdoor Education Center, established in 1997, provides over 300 acres for students to explore history and science and build community.

There are so many things to do at Wolf Run, whether it’s hiking, rope climbing, or fishing, every student is destined to have a good time. It’s a place that’s so unique to ESD and it truly provides the best escape from the everyday stresses of high school.”

My favorite place at ESD is the Study Commons. As a senior, you spend time in Senior Hall so the only time I was really in the Study Commons was during passing periods, but that’s why I loved it. Everyone is walking to their next class and you get to see and say hi to all the people you don’t have classes with or are in the same grade with, and sometimes the Study Commons is the only place you get to see them.

It feels like the heart of the school, and I feel the sense of community just walking through it. 14

The advisory program is a vital tradition at ESD, as warm and inviting as the Study Commons fireplace. Here, students and faculty gather into small groups for community and service. In addition to their teachers, advisors are strong advocates for the students in their care.

All students are required to take at least one year of Upper School art, and many take more. Last year, 21 seniors presented in AP art shows.

ESD offers 32 Advanced Placement courses for its students, more than any other Dallas-area independent school.

I realized I wanted to heavily pursue science courses in Upper School and ESD made it really easy for me to get more involved. I took two AP science classes my junior year and

three my senior year. I think it’s really cool that there was flexibility with our schedules so we’re able to really focus in on our interests.”

I don’t think of ESD as just a community; it’s more of a family. I’ve been here for 15 years and I’ve known a lot of people in my grade for almost my entire life. With the creation of the Wingmen, we wanted to leave a legacy and bring that feeling to our football games. It was our goal to involve the entire student body at the games, and it was really cool to see that come to fruition.

THE EPISCOPAL SCHOOL OF DALLAS

Leadership and community opportunities abound at ESD. Students are encouraged to serve others by sharing their talents and interests, like the student-created Lower School Rubik’s Cube Club, the Middle School Save the Bees Campaign, and the One Love Walk. Whether you’re an ESD lifer or a new community member, you are embraced and welcomed into the community.
