ESF Language & Learning Summer Camps 9 July - 24 August 2018 Join our Planet Guardian Adventures to embark on a different quest each week, meeting different people and exploring exciting places along the way. Students will use drama, games, story books and art to develop reading, writing, English speaking and listening skills. Taught by a team of experienced and qualified educators, students will be immersed in an environment where they will build confidence in communicating in English. Other camps available are playgroup, kindergarten preparation, primary preparation, primary writing, primary science, secondary Steps to Success and Spanish. Full day camps are available at Kowloon Junior School, Renaissance College and South Island School with a language course in the morning and a sports programme in the afternoon.

Join a language camp in the morning and follow with a Multi Sports camp in the afternoon for a full day of learning and fun! Other Camps

Playgroup Camp 15 months - 2.5 years (accompanied by an adult) Our play-based learning approach allows our youngest students to develop their curiosity and build early skills in a safe, comfortable environment. Through the exploration of nursery rhymes and much loved stories, students will participate in a variety of hands-on activities to develop their fine motor and gross motor skills, cognitive and language development and through our sensory activities they will have some messy fun! 2,3 or 5 day options, 1-4 weeks

Summer Phonics Foundation (3-4 years) In summer phonics, the children have fun with sounds: introduced to basic letter sounds activities that encourage finding the initial/middle and ending sounds words ending sounds in in words introduced to the principal of decoding work on activities to develop their pincer grip This course is a great introduction to phonics or can build on your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s phonic knowledge. It is done in a very fun way with lots of group work and movement. This course is only offered at ESF Language & Learning Centre - Wan Chai. 1 day , options of 4-8 weeks

Kindergarten Preparation K1 starters This course is for students who will be starting K1 after the summer. Students will develop their independence and confidence in an ESF kindergarten environment, as they explore nursery rhymes and well-loved stories through a variety of hands-on learning experiences. 5 days, options of 1-4 weeks

Primary Preparation

Primary Writing

This course is for kindergarten graduates who will be starting P1 after the summer. It provides a boost of skills, confidence and independence through lots of fun games, drama and activities in an ESF primary school setting.

Each week, students will learn a range of techniques, vocabulary and grammar as they explore different text types.

P1 / Year 1 starters

Over the course of two weeks, students will practise a range of essential skills which will provide an important foundation to ease their transition into primary school. Over two weeks, students will develop their understanding of the following: up to 100 high frequency words capital letters and simple punctuation basic sentence structure speaking clearly during presentations vocabulary development through a range of medium including projects including artart projects. 5 days, options of 1-2 weeks

Primary Science

Everyday Science (STEM) Lower Primary (6-8 years) Upper Primary (9-11 years)

The inventions of the future will be created by the students of today through experimentation! Using hands-on activities, our scientists will gain an understanding of how the world works as we incorporate science and engineering elements of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) each week. Students will also explore the natural world and environment around them as they explore natural phenomena, such as earthquakes. Scientists will develop an understanding of a range of text types such as observations and reports as they write up experiments. Highlights include structural engineering challenges such as building towers and bridges, safely creating slime, building a ‘robotic-like’ hand, the importance of different ‘shapes’ and much more! 5 days, options of 1-2 weeks

Primary Reader's Theatre

(6-8 years)

This course is a great opportunity for your child to develop their English language proficiency. The carefully selected scripts give students essential practice in oral reading fluency and public speaking. The scripts also provide an opportunity for group interaction and student cooperation. Spanish through Art & Culture (7-11 years) * Only available at 2 sites (Week 2 at Renaissance College and Week 3 at Kowloon Junior School). Spanish is a vibrant language with a fascinating culture. This summer, we are excited to offer a brand new Spanish course, in which students are immersed in the Hispanic art and culture as they develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Each day, students will build their understanding of the language through a different component of the culture. From latino music to indigenous art, students will travel in time through all the richness of Hispanic music, customs, people and colours. An immersion into different activities and art projects that will enrich not only their communication skills but also their love for art and their knowledge of different art techniques. This course is delivered by Linda Valencia. Linda Valencia is a qualified teacher and Graphic Artist Designer and Communicator from Guatemala. She has lived around the world and has brought together her two main passions - art and teaching her culture and language. Linda has designed art classes and workshops for children in Central America, Africa, India and Hong Kong. In this workshop, she aims to introduce the Spanish language in a different and unique dimension, blending two subjects so that children can discover and explore the Spanish language and culture through art. 5 days, 1 week

Secondary Steps to Success

Prepare for the future with these practical courses. Each week we will take you through our Steps to Success which will provide a strong foundation for school, university and work settings.

Award-winning author K.T. Durham will be teaching students about creative writing. Kathryn has been working as a Speech and Language Therapist since 2005. She holds a Master's degree in Speech Pathology Studies and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology (Honours) with a minor in Linguistics from the University of Queensland. Kathryn has always loved books and writing, and in 2009 she completed a creative writing course through the University of Oxford. Students will: explore the world of fantasy fiction and beyond learn techniques to write authentically and creatively craft storytelling skills to produce a sample chapter in four fivedays daysthat thatwould wouldimpress impressany anybook bookpublisher. publisher 5 days, 1 week

Basic Essential English (9-13 years)

This course focuses on the basic fundamentals of the English language. The lessons will provide a firm foundation for understanding and being able to apply basic grammar rules which are essential for communicating effectively. Students will work on sentence structure and grammar to improve communication skills through a range of engaging writing and speaking activities. Everyday English for different life scenarios, in both formal and informal settings, will also be covered. This includes essential English for overseas travel and basic email English. 5 days, options of 1-2 weeks

(11 years +)

Each week, students will spend a day in the field, seeing how the skills and knowledge they have acquired are applied in the real, working world. This will enable students to gain first hand experience and a working knowledge of the target subject.
