Happy Holidays – we’re glad to see you! No matter how you arrive, there’s always a warm welcome waiting in Eureka Springs. You’ll find it easy to embrace the holiday spirit as events for the next two months tip toward the fun side of life. There are things to enjoy for kids of all ages – activities, contests, concerts, parties, dances and more – not to mention our big Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree parade of lights. The season is bright with brand new events, too – A Night of a Thousand Santas, the Bad Santa Selfie Contest and a Star Wars movie anticipation party complete with drone dance-offs and light saber battles. As usual there’s plenty to make the heart merry.

The New Year is born amid celebrations large and small all around town, and in January we get an early start on Mardi Gras! Until then, bright December days turn into magical nights with the glow of luminarias, Victorian carolers along the evening Christmas Tour of Homes, guided nighttime springs tours and much more. Add the sounds of Christmas from concerts in the auditorium and venues around town, and you can’t help but be nostalgic for simpler, more peaceful times. An event so popular and, well … paranormal that it’s now being held on two different weekends to give everyone a chance to participate. Come join one of the largest ghost hunts in the United States featuring hands-on, independent, nocturnal investigations of America’s most haunted hotels. With a long history of many uses, including a women’s college and a cancer hospital run by a reputed “mad doctor,” the historic 1886 Crescent Hotel harbors a lot of good opportunity for psychic activity. The structure also stood abandoned for some years, with the doors open and the wind blowing through – so who knows what entities may have taken up residence? There will also be an exploration of sister hotel, the 1905 Basin Park – which will be fully closed off and empty for paranormal investigation purposes. Serious science If you have investigation equipment, bring it and be prepared to stay up at night probing the most active areas of the hotel. All levels of experience are welcome. You’ll also have a chance to learn from the pros, mingle, make connections and share your stories and experiences beyond the veil with other explorers of the supernatural and unexplained. You’ll engage in bona fide investigation of spaces known to be the most active at the Crescent Hotel from midnight to dawn. On Saturday nights, ghost hunts will be orchestrated and led by Crescent hotel resident investigator, author of seven books about the supernatural and founder of ARPAST, the awesome Larry Flaxman. Snacks and beverages will be available in the small hours at both hotels and shuttles will run at certain hours. There is also a discounted rate for early-arriving ESP participants staying Jan. 11 – 14 at either hotel. +

The Snow Village and Train Display is back! Santa’s elves set up the largest tiny village in the United States right here to provide your family with holiday wonder. Come see the intricate detail of little shops lit up for the holidays and take a carefree tour through this sweet, snowy village any weekend through Wednesday, Dec. 23. Running through the countryside and town of more than 300 buildings set in 1930 to 1950’s small town America are three Lionel 0 scale trains, a Lionel 0 scale trolley, and a Polar Express train. Open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturdays, and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sundays, this mini-attraction will delight everyone with its lighted homes, diners, businesses and even an airport! On Christmas week the Village and Train Display will be open Monday, Dec. 21 through Wednesday, Dec. 23 from 5 – 7 p.m. You’ll find the Snow Train Village in the Gaskins Switch shopping mall on US 62E. Experience the Light This family-oriented drive-through light display is open on the Great Passion Play grounds every Monday through Saturday until January 2 from dark until 8:30 p.m. to celebrate the Light of the World. There are also special daily tours of the Holy Land, the Passion Play’s backstage and the Bible and art museums providing five hours of fun and education beginning at 10 a.m., including lunch at noon. Christmas Tour of Homes Dec. 5 Explore Christmas past and make memories in Christmas present Enjoy historic Victorian architecture decked out for the holidays on this self-guided tour. Holiday-attired docents will greet you at each stop, regale you with colorful history and answer your questions. Some stops offer refreshments and others feature choir and band music. You’ll have a Dickens of a time on the tour as Victorianattired carolers stroll the sidewalks creating the ambience that can only be found in a historic town at Christmastime. There are nine locations along Spring Street, Hillside Avenue and N. Main Street, including the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway station, a reminder of the time when visitors were first brought by rail to Eureka in 1883; the 1886 Roundhouse and the Brownstone Inn, built in 1895 – both of which have fascinated folks since early days with their many incarnations, including being the Ozarka Water Bottling Company headquarters. Collecting breweriana goes far beyond old beer cans. From road signs to coasters and key chains; if it contained beer, served beer, advertised beer or commemorated an event with beer, somebody wants it. And they just might find it at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center on January 10. Two chapters of the Brewery Collectibles Club of America, the Progress from Tulsa and the Ar-Can-Sas Brewery Collectibles Club get together every year to host what they call a show – but it’s more than a show – it’s more like a buy-sell-trade social, with the emphasis on trade. Eureka Fine Art Gallery, 2 Pine Street, features work by long-time Eureka Springs resident artists who have gained regional and national attention. The gallery is run entirely by the artists and offers a variety of fine two and three-dimensional works of art. Several of the gallery’s artists also teach art workshops at Eureka Springs School of the Arts, and many continue to win accolades and awards at regional and national art shows. Among the gallery’s artists are John Robert Willer, Ernie Killman, Charles Pearce, Denise Ryan, Larry Mansker, Barbara Robinson and Drew Gentle. Terry Russell is the featured guest artist for the month and showcases several works in his new series of ceramic sculptures. Night of a Thousand Santas, 7 – 10 p.m. Get your Ho-HoHo on in Downtown Eureka Springs. Meet at Basin Spring Park to get your Santa gear (or wear your own) and mosey along with latent Kris Kringles of all stripes to compete in Reindeer Games (beginning at 5 p.m.) at participating local pubs where you’ll make a gingerbread house or decorate Christmas cookies or string popcorn and engage in all manner of holiday tomfoolery. A $10 wristband admits Santas to all participating venues. At each stop there will be a Bad Santa photo booth where you can snap a selfie! Folks will be uploading their Bad Santa Selfies all night onto Instagram for prizes. Snap selfies at all six booths and be entered to win a trip back to Eureka Springs. Whoever gets the most likes by Dec. 15 will also win a stack of gift certificates to enjoy when they come back. Storefronts bustle with live holiday mannequins and womannequins throughout the shopping district. Christmas Forest Tree Lighting Ceremony, Crescent Hotel lawn, 6 p.m. The illumination of more than 30 trees will light up the top of Crescent Hill. That’s one reason many visitors start their stay with a trolley ride or van tour. City transportation runs all winter, weather permitting, on the following limited schedule: Trolleys Trolleys will run December through February from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. four days a week, Wednesday through Saturday, on these routes only: Red Route – Historic District & US 62W Blue Route – US 62E to Kettle Campground & N. It’s all the fun of an outdoor music festival in mid winter – but you can forget the scarves and mittens! Come “camp out” inside for the Ozark Mountain Music Festival at the Basin Park Hotel and fight off winter cold with some hot bands. You’re in for four days of fun with fellow music lovers, being up close to bands playing your favorite Bluegrass/ Newgrass/Americana/and Indie Folk sounds, and perhaps sitting in on a midnight jam or two. The 2016 headliners, Kansas City Bear Fighters, will be joined by Arkansauce, Friends of the Phamily, Mark Bilyeu (Big Smith) and Cindy Woolf – The Creek Rocks, Opal Agafia and the Sweet Nothings, and NWA International Blues Competition winner, Jimmy Garret.
