LOVE BIRDS! HOW THROUGH A HEART ATTACK AND A STOKE THEY FOUND DEEPER LOVE HH residents Margaret and Merv Jamieson are love birds! Married in 1951 (68 years ago), they have always had a love for each other which has grown over the years, but this love grew to new heights when at 86 Margaret suffered a heart attack. Merv explains “Margaret had her heart attack at 4am one morning. She was in tremendous pain and soon became delirious not knowing what was going on. I quickly called the ambulance and she was hospitalized for a week, and then discharged. But Margaret was not the same person after this attack. She suffered from great depression and anxiety. Being a passenger in a car completely freaked her out. At home, she was crying a lot, and gave up the desire to cook and do chores around the house. She gave away all her cook books. I had to dig deep and call upon my inner character to care for her as a loving husband, and take over the running of the house, which I did. But you know what? My love for her grew more than ever.
heart attack, when I was 88, I had a stroke. Miraculously, Margaret found inner strength to look after me. “We were like two wounded soldiers caring for each other!” say’s Margaret. One day, my family had the idea of giving me something called “THE CALM COLOURING IN BOOK” which has pictures of flowers. Straight away I started to enjoy what I always loved when I was a school kid – colouring in! When I saw your article about flowers in the July / August edition of OUR HENDERSON HEIGHTS COMMUNITY NEWS I wanted to write to you to let you know how much it encouraged me and helped me. I have coloured in over 80 pictures of flowers now. Trying to keep inside the lines has been so therapeutic for me. It’s

helped me heal, so I can love my loving gorgeous 90 year old husband more and more! Julian, thank you for your paper. We so look forward to every issue. Keep up the great work!” HHCNews: Margaret and Merv, what advice would you give to readers about love? MARGARET AND MERV: Don’t let sickness and disaster destroy your love for your wife / husband / partner! Like a wave, catch it, hang on, dig deep, and watch what happens. It will take you to the shores of deeper love!”

In this issue of our paper, I am going to detail the three of the seven signs!
everyone else is doing. Even if you fail on the journey, persevere and you will certainly gain results in the long term!
Eighty percent of the success is in SHOWING UP! — Woody Allen
Sign 2: You procrastinate
Let’s face it, no one wants to be a failure in life. Everyone wants to be a success. The good news is that success is within everyone’s grasp! Yet, studies show that eighty percent of us fail to muster the courage to even show up. If we feed this habit and others, be sure of one thing — success is never going to come our way no matter how hard we strive and struggle for it. What are these seven signs?
Sign 1: You don’t take initiative to do things Can you recall the last time you put your hand up and took charge of things to do something new? If not, then congratulations you are part of the club to which the majority of ordinary people belong – the group who are not going to succeed in life. If you want to have a successful life, you need to have the courage to take initiative and take action. You cannot achieve success by doing what
Page 2
If you want to fail in life, forget about taking action. Rather, procrastinate. “I had planned to start my personal blog, but then I got too occupied with work at the office. I’ll do it from next week” and that next week never comes. This is just one example. There are countless other tell-tale signs you are a procrastinator.
short-term and break them down into actionable steps towards reaching them. Remember don’t just make goals, but strive to achieve them! In the next issue of OHHCNews, I will reveal the other four of the seven signs! Let’s encourage each other to succeed!
You cannot succeed in life or be a winner by sitting idle and waiting for things to happen. You have to work towards achieving goals. No one else will come and achieve your goals for you.
Sign 3: You don’t write your goals down When was the last time you wrote out your goals on paper? What are the list of accomplishments you want to achieve in your life? One year from now? Two years? Five years? If it’s been quite a while, then it’s high time you got serious about goal-setting. Every Friday evening, I write my goals — both long-term and

Anthony Robbins
Set and achieve your goals in 2019 and beyond with these strategies from Anthony Robbins!
you’d like to accomplish in this first year, and then build from there.
1. Remember: The pursuit matters just as much as the goal.
3. Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want.
Take, for example, that your goal is to make $100,000 for your new business in 2019. Instead of focusing on that dollar amount you hope to achieve, you should instead consider why you’re pursuing this goal and how the journey to achieve it will help you grow as a person. “The purpose of a goal is not to get it,” Robbins says. “The purpose of a goal is who you become in pursuit of it.” If you grow in the process of achieving your goal, then that is success.
2. Set a goal with the right scope in mind. People often give up on their New Year’s resolutions because they set goals that are too lofty. “Most people overestimate what they’re going to do in a year, and they underestimate what they can do in a decade or two or three or four,” Robbins says. Try to set a goal that you can reasonably achieve within one year. If it’s something that will be difficult to achieve in that timeframe, you might become overwhelmed and give up. If your goal is something that will take more than one year to achieve, try to set a benchmark for what

One major mistake people make when setting goals is focusing on what they don’t want, not what they do want. Instead of saying, “I don’t want to be fat, so I will lose 40 pounds”, reframe your goal to, “I want to be healthy and fit, so I will lose enough weight to be at a healthy BMI”. If you’re struggling to identify the core of your goal and what you truly want, Robbins offers this simple advice: Do something physical. “You’re going to get depressed if you drop your shoulders, drop your head, speak slowly and think about what you’re afraid of,” Robbins says. “But if I get you to go for a really intense run and we start to focus on what you want, you’re going to come up with what you want.” People often identify what they don’t want instead of what they do want because of fear. Try to reframe your mindset so you’re not being guided by fear, but rather facing it head on. “Most achievers are afraid of living a life falling short of who they are, what they stand for and what they want to give to their kids or their wife or the universe,” Robbins says. “Because of that, they’ll overcome their fears. You can turn fear on itself.” Next issue, I will share some more valuable insights into how to set goals! See you then…

LETTERS EDITOR Re: Family Dentist setting up in Henderson Heights I was so thrilled to see a new Dentist had established a business on Lake Panorama Drive. There is such a shortage of good dentists in the area, especially one that caters for different cultures. I’ll definitely be paying them a visit. So handy to my home! So thank you Dr Lisa and your team. Joanne, Lake Panorama Drive
Re: Connecting with nature Dear Julian, first of all, I wish to say thank you for your magazine. It is so nice to look forward to what is going on in our neck of the woods. When I saw your article about flowers, I wanted to tell you how colouring pictures of flowers helped me overcome the effects of a heart attack. So thank you for encouraging me! Margaret, Sturges Road.
Re: Anthony Robbins. I like that you are using Anthony Robbins in your magazine as I know he is one of the world’s leading motivational speakers and his stuff is
first class. It’s so practical and easy to understand. Thank you for sharing his writings with us. Much appreciated. Darren, shopkeeper, Westfield Mall, Henderson.

Re: Mega Mitre 10 Employee of the month Dear Julian, I regularly go to the café inside Mega Mitre 10 Lincoln Road, and when I go I always take time to read your paper. I particularly like the section ‘Employee of The Month’ as I show it to my grandchildren and read it to them in the hope that they might pick up the advice given. BENEFITS OF RAISED GARDEN BEDS If you want to grow the biggest, healthiest, fastest-growing veges, build yourself a raised vege garden. Because everything’s contained you can fill your raised garden bed up with all the very best soil, compost, mulch, and fertiliser. Raised garden beds offer a significant number of benefits when compared to a traditional in ground garden, not the least being the ability to reduce the number of weeds that will grow in your vegetable garden. The soil in raised garden beds is isolated from the soil of the surrounding gardens, and is less likely to be infested with weeds. Surrounding grasses from lawns will find raised garden beds more difficult to access. Like all garden beds, weeding will be required initially and will reduce over time. Raised garden beds can extend the planting season significantly as the soil will warm faster. When used in conjunction with close plant spacing your raised vegetable garden bed will create a microclimate which will contain moisture and further discourage weeds. Another useful
advantage of raised vegetable garden beds is that, since the gardener does not walk on the garden bed, the soil does not become compacted. The soil will remain light and loose allowing it to hold more air and permitting the roots of your vegetables to grow with less effort.

by the volunteer group ‘Friends of Waikumete’. They would like to see Waikumete Cemetery appreciated as a park of tranquillity and a space for reflection. The friends also organise public walks of the grounds and work with Council and cemetery management to enhance and educate the community on its history. As with any old cemetery, ghosts of the past are said to inhabit the area. Paranormal Investigator Marc Coppell has spent time there overnight hoping to catch the ghosts on camera. He made a great video of his experiences which can be found on Youtube at http://tiny.cc/sw45bz Waikumete Cemetery is New Zealand’s largest cemetery. It occupies a site of 108 hectares in the heart of Glen Eden. Established in 1886, over 70,000 souls have been laid to rest in its picturesque grounds. So many people are buried there, that in April it was announced there is only enough room for four more years of burials. In his excellent book, ‘City of
the Dead’, Matthew Gray claims Waikumete is “home to a mass grave filled with ...1128 Aucklanders who died in the influenza epidemic of 1918”. It is also home to a number of memorials commemorating The Erebus disaster of 1979, a tribute to the Jewish victims of the holocaust and a cenotaph reflecting on sacrifice made by ANZAC troops in the First World War. Notable West Aucklanders such as motor racing icon Bruce McLaren, Gym pioneer Don Oliver, and literary genius Maurice Shadbolt are spending their next chapter within its confines. Input into the restoration of grave and headstone restoration is undertaken

Since 1979, Waitemata and the Fukuoka-based club in Japan have been giving their junior grades the “opportunity of a lifetime” to travel to each other’s countries to play rugby and experience a new culture. This year Waitakere and Pakuranga RFC have combined with Waitemata RFC to take this trip to Japan, which also happens to be the year of the Rugby World Cup. Team members have been preparing and are ready to make new friends, catch up with old friends, experience a new culture and play rugby, including going to support our All Blacks while on tour. We have two boys that went over as junior rugby players for Waitemata in 2014. They have kept their friendships strong with their Japanese families. Poyer Reihana-Finau (Waitakere college) and Damian Henry (Kelston boys) have supported the juniors as cultural advisors. The NZ team coach, Terry Vaa, has been coaching our

Juniors since 2011 and this time will be returning to Fukuoka with Manager Karen Reihana-Finau. While in Japan, they will be renewing old friendships and planning to receive the Japanese Club when it comes to NZ in 2020. The Juniors aged 9-13 years, depart on the 12th September and will be billeted with the Kusagae families in Fukuoka for 8 days then travel to Tokyo to watch the All Blacks vs South Africa. This is our opportunity to thank all our sponsor’s, local businesses, families, and supporters for helping us see another dream come true for our young juniors. YOUNG INDIAN HAS BIG PLANS FOR HIS FUTURE IN NZ! Only 3 years ago, Raj Sakariya (now 20) left Gujarat in India to start a degree in IT at Waikato University. He flew through. While studying in Hamilton, he met top Indian Chef Manu Lal who now owns and runs West Auckland’s premiere Indian restaurant. Called Indian Flavours, and situated at 330 Great North Road, this eatery recently won an award on the international site MENU LOG as ‘The Best In The West’. This is quite an achievement and is based on customer feedback. Raj’s passion for food and hospitality started in India where his dad owned a successful Indian restaurant. Says Raj “Manu and I are now great friends. I have skills in bar tending and customer service, and he is a top chef. Together, we have become a successful team. My dream is to open what I call a “red carpet” restaurant in West Auckland with Manu. When people come to this restaurant, it would be like being transported supernaturally into an Indian restaurant in downtown Gujarat. Everything would be authentically Indian – the food, the music, staff costumes, the décor, the drinks… everything. No detail would be missed. My other great goal is to find a good Kiwi wife. I can cook for her and wait on her. If she marries me, I promise, she will be in heaven! Please pass the word around. ” Raj beams. It’s obvious he is not joking. OHHCNews: I have eaten at this restaurant many times. It’s seriously the best Indian food I have ever tasted. And ladies, Raj is a super nice guy. His good looks and winsome service skills are on display at Indian Flavours. You can phone Indian Flavours on 09 835 2030. Eat in or takeaway.
